Why didnt he ask Jesus for clarification? Why didnt Jesus call him back and ask for an explanation? Herein is the mystery of freedom. God never forces himself on us, but leaves us free to choose. The man in our Gospel is looking for a deeper relationship with God. Is he so attached to his possessions that he cant see his life without them? Through our Baptism we have already been brought into this awesome relationship. We are sons and daughters of God. The Gospels reveal how Jesus lived this relationship. He was constantly aware of the Fathers presence and addressed his prayer to the Father. Jesus was vigilant for the poor, the hungry, the sick, and the im- prisoned. And we know how the Father regards the Son: This is my be- loved son …” (Mt 17:5). Jesus is our example for everything. We dont have to forge our own way in life. If the Father asks me to trust, he has given me Jesus as my example. If he asks me to love others, he has given Jesus as my example. Our Lord, Jesus, looks on us with love. He has restored our relationship with the Father, making us children of God. As our brother, Jesus is the Way to the Father. Let us offer all we have and await all from Jesus. May we become faithful imitators of Him. May He bring us to perfection as the Father who is in heaven. Let Jesus live in you, so that you may live in Him. Then Jesus will not permit you to be separated from Him. He'll guard you to live eternally in the joy of His love. By ourselves we can do nothing, but with God we can do all things. “. . . I can do nothing, But with God .…”The man in today’s Gospel asks Jesus, “What must I do to inherit eternal life?” Yet when Jesus tells him to “sell what you have and give to the poor,” the man walks away sad, because “he had many possessions.” But why did he just walk away? St. Paul School of Evangelization begins third year of equipping missionaries

SEP 30, 2021

Weekly courses geared toward anyone who want to learn practical evangelization, not just street missionaries, leaders say WESTLAND — For almost a decade, St. Paul Street Evangelization has been out and about, preaching the word of God and the truths of the Catholic faith. Now, the organization is turning its street smarts into book smarts with the St. Paul School of Evangelization. The school isn’t about training people to join the St. Paul street team, but rather is focused on equipping evangelists with the knowledge and confidence to preach Christ in their daily lives. Adam Janke, chief operating officer of the Warren-based St. Paul Street Evangelization, said the school, which is set to begin Oct. 9 at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy Parish in Westland, came from interactions the street evangelization team had with those who wanted evangelization training. “We first started having online formation available for our evangelists, but we only did one-day workshops,” Janke told Detroit Catholic. “However, there is only so much you can do with a one-day workshop on any topic in the Catholic Church. We felt there was a need for a yearlong school of evangelization to help our students.” Mark Hornbacher instructs a St. Paul School of Evangelization course, going through Scripture and making connections between Jesus’ encounter with people in the Gospel and offering tips for how students can initiate conversations with others. (Photo courtesy of St. Paul Street Evangelization) Divided into four quarters, with a suggested donation of $200 per quarter, the St. Paul School of Evangelization is now in its third year of equipping lay evangelists who want to learn more about how to talk about their faith in an increasingly secular world. “Our students are disciples who have been hearing from (Detroit) Archbishop (Allen H.) Vigneron and other Catholic speakers and writers about the new evangelization, but are still unsure how to put that into practice in their everyday life,” Janke said. “They know we are out there, doing this work through street ministry, so they want to learn from us.” The St. Paul School of Evangelization aims to turn everyday Catholics into everyday evangelists. Students include those who work in parishes or apostolates, or simply those who want to share their faith with others. “All different kinds of people come to the course,” said Randy Husaynu, regional urban and senior missionary evangelist with St. Paul Street Evangelization and a teacher in the program. “These are people who want to share the Good News of Jesus Christ, but don’t know how. They’ve read this great pastoral letter, ‘Unleash the Gospel,’ and know they are called to be joyful missionary disciples.” The St. Paul School of Evangelization isn’t meant to lead people to become street evangelists, but instead is about helping “everyday Catholic” better understand their role and responsibility in evangelization. (Naomi Vrazo | Detroit Catholic) The St. Paul School works with hosts parishes — Holy Family in Novi and St. Mary of the Hills in Rochester Hills in the school’s first two years — to give students real-world experience serving the parish’s needs. By the end of the class, students feel comfortable talking about their faith to non-Catholics and inviting lapsed Catholic back to Mass, Husaynu said. cont. pg. 4

fm. pg. 3 “When someone comes into our class, by the end, there will be a lifechanging transformation within their souls; their core DNA will change,” Husaynu said. “They will become like a St. Peter, a St. Paul, where they will be evangelists without knowing it.” Students throughout the course are assigned “homework” in the form of weekly challenges, doing everything from evangelical charity to practicing telling others why they’re Catholic. Each class includes small group discussion, sharing tips and tricks for the next time an evangelization opportunity pops up and what it means to live with a missionary spirit. Bob Wilson, director of St. Paul Street Evangelization, talks with a fellow missionary on a street corner in downtown Detroit. Upon completing the eight-month course, students will feel more comfortable sharing their faith with others, relating the Gospel message to real-life scenarios and become more confident evangelists. (Naomi Vrazo | Detroit Catholic) “A lot of people go through the classes and feel more confident as a result,” Janke said. “They feel equipped by the Holy Spirit and filled spiritually so they can go out evangelizing. A lot of them look over their testimony reports and their group projects, realizing, ‘Oh wow, look how far I’m coming along, I’m having regular conversations about my faith in Jesus, about the Church and the sacraments.’” Classes are offered both in a virtual format and in person; in-person classes are held Saturdays from 6-8 p.m. starting Oct. 9 at St. Mary, Cause of Our Joy. The courses end June 1. To register, visit streetevangelization.com/parish-schools. “The greatest benefit of this program is saving souls,” Husaynu said. “You are out there, building bridges from the streets to the Church.”

Bishops Report 95 attacks on Catholic churches in US since May 2020

By Kate Olivera Denver Newsroom, Sep 13, 2021 There have been at least 95 reported incidents of vandalism of Catholic churches across the United States since May 2020, according to a report by the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops’ Committee for Religious Liberty. Incidents include arson, the destruction of statues, and the defacement of church buildings and gravestones with swastikas and anti-Catholic language. “Whether those who committed these acts were troubled individuals crying out for help or agents of hate seeking to intimidate, the attacks are signs of a society in need of healing,” Archbishop Thomas Wenski of Maimi, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Religious Liberty, and Archbishop Paul Coakley of Oklahoma City, chairman of the USCCB Committee on Domestic Justice and Human Development, wrote in a July 2020 statement. “In those incidents where human actions are clear, the motives still are not. As we strain to understand the destruction of these holy symbols of selfless love and devotion, we pray for any who have caused it, and we remain vigilant against more of it,” the bishops wrote. The latest incident included in the report took place Sept. 5. Vandals graffitied a door and two signs at a Catholic church in Louisville, Colo., about 20 miles northwest of Denver. Incidents occurred across 29 states. The report referenced 12 incidents in California since May 2020, including the defacement and removal of a statue of St. Junipero Serra in October 2020, and arson in July 2020 that destroyed parts of a cont. pg. 5

The report also cited 14 incidents in New York, including anti-Catholic and anti-police graffiti on the exterior of Saint Patrick’s Cathedral in January. In some cases, dioceses have requested increased security following vandalism. The Diocese of Brooklyn requested increased police presence in May, after two incidents of vandalism at church properties in three days. A statue depicting the Blessed Mother holding the infant Jesus was discovered vandalized outside the diocesan administrative offices, with Christ decapitated. A crucifix display outside a parish was also found toppled over, with an American flag outside the rectory burned. Both incidents were investigated as potential hate crimes. “We are definitely concerned that there is a pattern of hate crimes against Catholics,” said Msgr. Anthony Hernandez, the moderator of the curia for the diocese, in a statement following the attacks. “Our nation finds itself in an extraordinary hour of cultural conflict,” Archbishops Wenski and Coakley wrote. “The path forward must be through the compassion and understanding practiced and taught by Jesus and his Holy Mother. Let us contemplate, rather than destroy, images of these examples of God’s love. Following the example of Our Lord, we respond to confusion with understanding and to hatred with love.” Kate Olivera is executive producer of Catholic News Agency's podcasts: CNA Newsroom and CNA Editor's Desk.

Words on the Word October 10, 2021 – In the Heart

When news stories are par#cularly sad, terrible, even tragic, it can some#mes seem like the backstory is self-evident.

Consider, for example, the incidents of a few weeks ago in Iosco County, near Tawas City. According to a story in The Detroit News, a three-year-old child was found dead, and the young mother was charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse.

The woman, however, pleaded not guilty, and, at the #me of this wri#ng, a probable cause conference had been scheduled for the following week.

Most of the other details of the story need not be recounted here, other than the fact that the woman, when she was found by police walking along some railroad tracks, declined to discuss the baby’s death.

Immediately, of course, most commentators assumed the woman is guilty, that no mercy should be shown from the jus#ce system, and that this young mother is like others whose stories are oJen recounted on television and in the movies.

Specula#on on the facts behind the case, the mo#ves, the psychological states of everyone involved, and so forth, serve no real purpose. Presumably, law enforcement and the jus#ce system will get to the heart of the maLer.

It’s an important reminder though, that, in the end, God knows all these things, and he is the ul#mate judge, not only of the facts, but of what is in our hearts.

“Indeed the word of God is living and effec#ve,” St. Paul writes to the Hebrews in today’s second reading, “sharper than any two-edged sword, penetra#ng even between soul and spirit, joints and marrow, and able to discern reflec-#ons and thoughts of the heart.

“No creature is concealed from him, but everything is naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must render an account.” © 2021, Words on the Word
