SERVICE OF REMEMBRANCEJune 10, 2018 | 4:00 pm

(Family members and guests are welcomed and seated by hosts before the service begins.)

GATHERING Great is Thy Faithfulness Praise Band SCRIPTURE Psalm 23 (NKJV)

The Lord is my shepherd;I shall not want.He makes me to lie down in green pastures; He leads me beside the still waters. He restores my soul;He leads me in the paths of righteousnessFor His name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,I will fear no evil; For you are with me;Your rod and your staff, they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; You anoint my head with oil;My cup runs over.Surely goodness and mercy shall follow meAll the days of my life; And I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever.

GREETING (Please rise in body or in spirit.)Leader: Friends, we have gathered here to praise God and to witness to our faith as we celebrate the lives of those we have lost this year. We come together in our grief, acknowledging our loss. MayGodgrantusgrace, thatinpainwemayfindcomfort, in sorrow hope, in death resurrection.

PRAYER (Please be seated.) pp. 142-143 (UMC Book of Worship)Leader: O God, who gave us birth, you are ever more ready to hear than we are to pray. You know our needs before we ask, and our ignorance in asking. Give to us now your grace, that as we shrink before the mystery of death, we may see the light of eternity. Speak to us once more your solemn message of life and of death. Help us to live as those who are prepared to die. And when our days here are accomplished, enable us to die as those who go forth to live, so that living or dying, our life may be in you, and that nothing in life or in death will be able to separate us from your great love in Christ Jesus our Lord. All: Amen.

ANTHEM Shepherd Me, O God By: Marty Haugen (Conference Choir under the direction of Rev. Dr. Jacqueline K. Thompson)

LITANY PRAYER I Was There to Hear Your Borning Cry* Psalm 90:1-17 (CEB)ALL: I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.Leader: Lord, you have been our help, generation after generation. All: Before the mountains were born, before you birthed the earth and the inhabited world— from forever in the past to forever in the future, you are God.Leader: You return people to dust, saying, “Go back, humans,”

All: Because in your perspective a thousand years are like yesterday past, like a short period during the night watch.Leader: You sweep humans away like a dream, like grass that is renewed in the morning. All: True, in the morning it thrives, renewed, but come evening it withers, all dried up. Leader: I was there when you were but a child, with a faith to suit you well; In a blaze of light you wandered off tofindwheredemonsdwell. Yes, we are wasting away because of your wrath; we are paralyzed with fear on account of your rage. All: You have put our sins right in front of you, set our hidden faults in the light from your face.Leader: Yes, all our days slip away because of your fury; wefinishupouryearswithawhimper. All: We live at best to be seventy years old, maybe eighty, if we’re strong.Leader: But their duration brings hard work and troubleAll: Because they go by so quickly. Andthenweflyoff.Leader: Who can comprehend the power of your anger? The honor that is due you corresponds to your wrath. All: So teach us to number our days so we can have a wise heart. Leader: When you heard the wonder of the Word I was there to cheer you on; You were raised to praise the living Lord, to whom you now belong. Ifyoufindsomeonetoshareyourtime and you join your hearts as one, I’ll be there to make your verses rhyme from dusk ‘till rising sun. Come back to us, Lord! Please, quick! Have some compassion for your servants! All: Fill us full every morning with your faithful love so we can rejoice and celebrate our whole life long.Leader: In the middle ages of your life, not too old, no longer young, I’ll be there to guide you through the night, complete what I’ve begun. Makeushappyforthesameamountoftimethatyouafflictedus— for the same number of years that we saw only trouble. All: Let your acts be seen by your servants; let your glory be seen by their children.Leader: Let the kindness of the Lord our God be over us. Make the work of our hands last. All: Make the work of our hands last! Leader: When the evening gently closes in,

and you shut your weary eyes, I’ll be there as I have always been with just one more surprise. I was there to hear your borning cry, I’ll be there when you are old. I rejoiced the day you were baptized, to see your life unfold.

SCRIPTURES Lamentations 3:19-24 (NRSV)Remembermyafflictionandroaming,The wormwood and the gall.My soul still remembersAnd sinks within me.This I recall to my mind,Therefore I have hope.Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,Because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning;Great is your faithfulness.“The Lord is my portion,” says my soul,“Therefore I hope in him!” John 6:32-40 (NRSV)Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is the one who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” Then they said to him, “Lord, give us this bread always.” And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to me shall never hunger, and he who believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and the one who comes to me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of the one who sent me. This is the will of the Father who sent me, that of all he has given me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of the one who sent me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

ANTHEM Hymn of Promise By: Natalie Sleeth Arranged By: John Ferguson

(Conference Choir under the direction of Rev. Dr. Jacqueline K. Thompson)

PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING (In unison.) pp. 150-151 (UMC Book of Worship)God of love, we thank you for all with which you have blessed us even to this day:for the gift of joy in days of health and strength and for the gifts of your abiding presence and promise in days of pain and grief. We praise you for home and friends, and for our baptism and place in your Church with all who have faithfully lived and died.Above all else we thank you for Jesus, who knew our griefs, who died our death and rose for our sake, and who lives and prays for us.And as Jesus taught us, so now we pray:

LORD’S PRAYER (In unison.)Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name.Thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven.Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses,as we forgive those who trespass against us.And lead us not into temptationbut deliver us from evil:for thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen.

HYMN (Please rise and sing in unison.) Sing with All the Saints of Glory #702 (UMH) Sing with all the saints in glory, sing the resurrection song! Death and sorrow, earth’s dark story, to the former days belong.

All around the clouds are breaking, soon the storms of time shall cease; in God’s likeness we, awaking, know the everlasting peace.

O what glory, far exceeding all that eye has yet perceived! Holiest hearts, for ages pleading, never that full joy conceived. God has promised, Christ prepares it, there on high our welcome waits. Every humble spirit shares it; Christ has passed th’eternal gates.

Life eternal! heaven rejoices: Jesus lives, who once was dead. Join we now the deathless voices; child of God, lift up your head! Patriarchs from the distant ages, saints all longing for their heaven, prophets, psalmists, seers, and sages, all await the glory given.

Life eternal! O what wonders crowd on faith; what joy unknown, when, amidst earth’s closing thunders, saints shall stand before the throne! O to enter that bright portal, seethatglowingfirmament;know, with thee, O God Immortal, “Jesus Christ whom thou has sent!”

DISMISSAL WITH BLESSING p. 151 (UMC Book of Worship) Leader: Now may our Creator God from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named, according to the riches of God’s glory, grant you to be strengthened with might through God’s Spirit in your inner being, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the breadth and length and height and depth, and to know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge, thatyoumaybefilledwithallthefullnessofGod.

All: Amen.
