332 PSUCttE. [March--April 89o,
shown was when the antennae were ex-
tended as if alert. Then my presencenear at hand or my passing would berecognized by a rocking or bowing mo-tion of all the wings in common, pro-duced, apparently, by the action of themiddle legs in lowering and raising thebody upon the pivot formed by the in-sertion of the hind legs; the tips of thewings moved slowly forward and back-ward, the forward motion more abruptthan the backward, over an arc of notmore than a quarter of a centimetre themotion was accompanied by no percep-tible sound. On the 5th, a bright, warm day, the
butterfly had turned back to the win-dow at about noon, and my appearanceled to some fluttering against the pane.As I remained motionless, it gainedheart, walked about the broad ledge be-neath the window with open wings andantennae spread at right angles, withevery few steps depressing them likestiff sticks till they touched the ground, beating time, as it were, with its march, and, finally, took up its position on theledge, and turning its back to the sun, expanded its wings fully, even depres-ing them so that the tips touched thesurface of rest; the antennae retainedthe alert position of the day before.
Wishing to see what would happen Imoved Dora my position directly oppo-site the window, my head about threefeet away, toward the butterfly, but as
slowly as possible. No effect was pro-duced until my eyes were within a footof the butterfly facing me, when itswings shut with a snap and then beganto vibrate; the tips of the wings ap-peared to have a lateral vibration of nottnore, probably considerably less, thana couple of millimetres, while the an-
tennae vibrated forward and backwardas much as laterally, and not over amillimetre. I could perceive no soundwhatever. I slowly turned my head tobring my ear opposite, but could stilldetect nothing. On endeavoring to
bring my ear still nearer by the quietestpossible approach, the butterfly flewagain to the window and fluttered about.Subsequently, I got within six inchesand could then distinctly hear a rustlelike the flapping of the wings of an in-sect against a window pane at a dis-
tance, and could see that there was notthe slightest motion of the fore wing onthe hind. It afterwards partook so
greedily of some half-rotten apple of-fered it that it pernaitted me to hustleit about with my finger without ap-parent fright.
