BOOK DESIGN AWARDS

AUSTRALIAN BOOK PUBLISHERS ASSOCIATION

JUDGES' REPORT

Faced with a bewildering array of books from the practical to the expensively decorative,

choices for awards initially appeared to be very difficult. In practice, while the overall

standard of design was competent, the number of outstanding book designs was relatively

small.

the

Though not directly relevant to the design awards, the overall standard of book production

was excellent. This standard was not matched by the generally low standard of line illustrations

in many of the paperbacks for educational use.

At the higher-priced end of the market, heavily illustrated books tended to adopt very safe,

standard solutions to design problems. On the other hand, the non-illustrated books often

seemed to be straining to find typographical solutions which were unusual, and therefore

tended to be over-designed and distractingly tricksy. However, these solutions were better than

much of the typography which was frankly dull. The happy medium of stylish design which

serves the purpose of the book without being obtrusive was rarely achieved.

The winners and the commended books should be seen in this context as fine examples of

design which stood out and demanded to receive credit. The designers' comments on the

problems which they faced with the book serve in many cases to point up their achievements.

The awards judging is gruelling, but it is also an enjoyable way of surveying the state of

book design and production across the country.

Shelly Gare Robert Klinkhamer Robert Pierce Jan Schmoeger Brian Seddon

COMMITTEE REPORT

This year the judging took place in Melbourne, as indeed it will in 1988. The judges settled

to their task with enthusiasm and vigour.

Our thanks to Shelley Gare, Associate Editor, The Herald, Robert Klinkhamer, Robert

Pierce and Jan Schmoeger, all freelance designers, and Brian Seddon, Senior Lecturer,

Department of Graphic Design in the Chisholm Institute of Technology.

Appreciation for their continued generosity is also extended to the donors of the awards:

Joyce Nicholson; Kevin Weldon and Weldon Hardie; News Limited and 'The Aust~alian'

newspaper; the McPherson Group; Griffin Press, Ashton Scholastic; Reader's Digest Services;

Penguin Books Australia and DW Thorpe.

Our gratitude to those who freely donated their services in the typesetting and printing of

this catalogue: Jim Shepherd of Midland Typesetters (Maryborough) and Henry Rosenbloom of

Globe Press (Melbourne). Our appreciation also goes to Longman Cheshire for allowing us to borrow their boardroom

for the judging, and to Megan Murray of the ABPA whose administration was infallible.

POINT TO POINT -THE ART OF TIM STORRIER

Designed by Deborah Brash/Brash Design

RRP:

Point to Point-The Art of Tim Starrier Linda van N unen Deborah Brash/Brash Design Craftsman House Setila Type, Sydney Kyodo Shing Loong Printing Industries, Singapore $69.95

D esigner's Comments: After the initial perusal of manuscript, plates and miscellaneous artwork supplied for this project I was definite about one aspect only: POINT TO POINT had the potential to be one of the most visually exciting and comprehensive books available on a contemporary artist. The text and visual material were compelling, so to reflect in the design the high quality of both the author's and the artist's contribution was a challenge in itself

Initially the sheer volume and variety of the supplied artwork was overwhelming; literally hundreds of plate transparencies of varying quality and an equal amount of often undated or labelled photos, sketches and memorabilia spanning Starrier's life for 'possible inclusion'. Not only is Starrier prolific in his output, but also in his choice of medium, su/?iect and style. Clearly, the design challenge lay in the successful integration of such a vast kaleidoscope of rich and diverse imagery, while maintaining a balanced, relevant and harmonious flow throughout. A strong sense of discipline over design and layout was necessary to co-ordinate all elements without foifeiting the boldness, vitality and impact of the imagery. I also wanted to avoid the obvious cliche of many books of this nature where pages of bald text are followed by the plates.

ThrMJghout the duration of my involvement with POINT TO POINT, my o/?iective was always clear: to try and produce a visually powerful and exciting desigtJ and layout indicative of the uniqueness of Starrier the artist, and simultaneously conveying the essence of the man.

Judges' Comm ents: The designer has stated the difficulties with this kind of book extremely well. The end result is youthful and energetic without falling into cliche or design stereotype. The very pleasing use of grey stencils and a sans serif face shows a stylish and individualistic approach.

D esig ners' Comm ents: We wanted to portray Tony Bilson's approach to food: fresh and modern, yet firmly based on classical French cuisine; using the best Australian ingredients.

We also wanted to convey Tony Bilson's attitude to his restaurants-places that attract people from the arts, the theatre, the media . . .

J udges' Comments: A very contemporary and appealing design which works as a unity, especially with a sympathy between the front and back cover which is fairly rare. Executed with a sense of humour.

The need to avoid cliched or sentimental handling of the 'Man and Woman' theme was a big concern for me so I chose to use very simple and angular shapes. The main problem with the page design was to ensure that the poems just didn't float on the page.

Judges' Comments: An outstanding design package consistently carried through and all elements- the packaging, jackets, illustrations, text pages and typography-support the main design concept. The serenity of the design reflects the contents of the book. The colour

printing is appropriate but not overdone and harmonious with the whole package.

Designer's Comments: The most important element in any picture is the ce,Jtral character. To produce a successful book, this character must be fully resolved in the mind of the illustrator and in preliminary sketches before attempting finished artwork. I rarely encounter any problems with regard to composition or layout. Ideas for these usually come when I firs t read the ma1mscript as I find that this is the time when my mind is most open and the imagination most vivid. I always make notes of my first ideas accompanied by thumb nail sketches giving a rough indication of type placement and composition of illustration. With ideas on paper, I concentrate on resolving the character and looking at how it can be applied to my ideas.

A great deal of research had been dor1e beforehand so chat I was given a very full brief and had a clear impression of the mood and of che people who would be reading the book. It has been a very enjoyable col/aboratior1.

Designer's Comments: The main problem was presenting a large amount of informatiot! on the maps in a clear, concise way. Also the use of only one colour added to the problem of differentiating information. There were three authors so there were virtually three different manuscripts and visual presentations of the maps. The problem was to unify the style of the maps from the authors' presentations.

Judges' Comments: Splendid cover and well-ordered and clean layout on the inside.

Designer's Comments: My brief was to design an elegant book of clean lines with strong photographic images and supporting texts. The design problems included balance of the double-page spreads, variation in heading width and text depth, placement of captions and running heads, arrangement of photographs and their relationship with the text and to each other, and the treatment of the preliminary pages. Therefore, the design had to be flexible enough to incorporate all these combinations in a unified way while maintaining a crisp, graceful effect. Type style and size were chosen to complement the lightness of the text pages so as not to be too imposing for the reader, and to balance the photography. The authorphotographer had expressed a strong direction that images were not to be cropped, if possible.

Designer's Comments: This is the third volume in a series of anthologies. The previous two were verse and adulc shore stories. I had to keep to the same basic format of typography and grid, while making it look more appealing and accessible to children from eight onwards. The titles and author's names in the side margins made it easy co find your way around this anthology.

I used a thick grey line to differentiate between illustrations chat related to text and illustrations that were included without text. We couldn't commission any new illustrations so I was very pleased to find the preliminary and endpaper illustrations in old children's books.
