The Spanish Wine Collection is a group of several family-run wineries from any corner of Spain, that have gathered together in order to be stronger.

I am not an agent nor a broker: I am the wineries. We just work as if we were a consortium.

Our domains are small-medium gem wineries that are very reputed in Spain but have no presence (or just a little) on the foreign markets. They are representative of the most remarkable indigenous

grape varieties or appellations of the Spanish wine scene. All our wineries are different but have common denominators: indigenous grape varieties, altitude wines, a winemaking which is respectful with the environment, quality and limited handcrafted wines that have a story to tell.

This is a brief summary of the wineries of the group (all of them have very good accolades from James Suckling, Gilbert & Gaillard or Decanter):

Bodegas Marañones, D.O.P. Vinos de MadridSierra de Gredos area (the new Priorat). Outstanding and elegant wines made by the winemaker Fernando García, the co-founder of Comando G (another great winery in Spain). Sublime wines made mainly with Garnacha or Albillo, in the purest way. 90 to 95 points by Robert Parker.

Finca San Blas, D.O.P. Utiel-RequenaA different and elegant way to understand Spanish winemaking. Mainly indigenous varieties as Bobal, Tempranillo or Merseguera for example, among others. The result are very complex and subtle wines. The winemaker is a teacher of oenology at the University of Valencia, a restless and inquisitive mind who is always innovating. One of the wines of the range has even received the Platinum Best in Show in the Decanter World Wine Awards.

Finca Collado, D.O.P. AlicanteIn the Monastrell growing region, the winery makes handcrafted and elegant wines which are flavorful and very aromatic, in a delicate way. The young and modern team is focusing on rescuing old vineyards and forgotten varieties, as Merseguera or Forcallat. A Mediterranean style, full of soul and heart. The packaging is as poetic as the wines. Fresh and chameleon-like range, as the style can vary and surprise in a positive way from one wine to another. 93 points Peñin for one of the most reputed Monastrell wines of Spain.

Vinomaniac, D.O.P. Utiel-Requena and DOP AlicanteThis is our own trade mark we make in different wineries and appellations. A young, fresh and funny project (but elegant and trendy). Vinomaniac, the character on the labels, is positively obsessed by the world of wine, introducing a fresh design in the premium category. More than 90 points by James Suckling and only Gold Medals at Gilbert & Gaillard international contests.

Gómez & Rial, D.O.P. Rias BaixasA pure expression of the Albariño grape made with elegance in a traditional way by the grandson of the founders, close to Santiago de Compostela. Concentration and delicacy in less than twenty thousands bottles.

Pasiego, D.O.P. Utiel-RequenaConcentrated, flavored and elegant altitude wines. A small winery, at a human scale, that lead the personal advise of Richard Smart to make fine wines, mainly from Bobal (he was one of the first to believe in the potential of this grape and to bottle an elegant Bobal, which is very complicated as it is a capricious and wildy grape).

Celler Bernaví, D.O.P. Terra AltaGarnacha and other local grapes are the heart of this project in the highlands of Catalonia. The result of the fusion of Italian and Spanish grape varieties and winemaking are wines that interpret the Catalan terroir in an elegant and not rustic way, in the finest Tuscany style. 93 points James Suckling.

Bodega Marañones is the epitome of natural elegance, without artifice. A microclimate within the D.O. Wines of Madrid, a large number of old vineyards of indigenous varieties (mainly Grenache and Albillo Real) and a visionary and talented winemaker who knows how to interpret them (Fernando García Alonso, co-founder of Comando G) are the quintessence of this winery that strives to rescue vineyards and varieties in total communion with the environment to produce fresh, delicate and elegant wines. Altitude wines with its own identity and singularity.

Location: the vineyards of Bodega Marañones are located in San Martin de Valdeiglesias, one of the three sub-areas of the Denomination of Origin Wines of Madrid, at 70 km West of the capital. It borders Avila and Toledo, at the foot of the confluence of the Sierra de Guadarrama with the Sierra de Gredos, crossed by the river Alberche.

Sierra de Gredos is a clear example that we can distinguish several terroirs in the same denomination of origin, depending on the microclimate. This privileged enclave meets very particular and conducive characteristics to make outstanding wines: altitude, dry Mediterranean climate with wide thermal fluctuations between night and day and granitic soils.

Summers are hot and winters are long and cold but tempered, as this area is protected against North winds (allowing vineyards to be less susceptible to be attacked by fungal diseases such as mildew and oidium).

The estate: 20 hectares shared between unirrigated old bush vines (between 30 and 70 years old) of local varieties (mainly Grenache and Albillo) and Mediterranean forest, at an altitude of between 650 and 850 meters above sea level.

The acidic soils of the vineyards (pH 5.5 to 7), with high levels of silica and low levels of organic matter, proceed from the mechanical weathering of the granitic rock. Soils are mainly made up of sand or silt.

These granite soils provide a high level of natural acidity to the grapes as well as a great mineral expression.

Method and philosophy: absolute care of the grapes as the main element of the whole process, communion with the environment with the least impact as possible and a minimum intervention in the winemaking process.

Bodega Marañones uses organic farming methods, which is the best way to express the terroir and minerality of the wines and keeps a healthy environment. Each plot is vinified separately and manually, in order to express the purity and characteristics of each soil and vintage. The principles of biodynamic which are applied on the vineyards and during the winemaking process contribute to produce well-balanced wines between freshness, acidity and tannins, that are authentic, elegant, with a strong personality.

The personality of the owners and the winemaker of Bodega Marañones also strongly influences the result: they have clearly defined ideas, they are warm and welcoming and still stay really humble even being so bright. The only feelings they can awake among people who approach them are interest and appreciation.

Respect applied to both nature and people who work with them is reflected in each of their wines.

Winemaking takes place in foudres and wooden vats made of organic oak of the highest quality (French brand Grenier). To age the wines, they use larger French oak barrels between 500 and 700 liters in order to avoid an excessive presence of wood.

The result: elegant wines that are the subtle blend of the different nuances derived from the characteristics of the soil, the climate, the vineyards, the manufacturing process and the way of being and of realizing of the entire team of Bodega Marañones.

These granite soils provide a high level of natural acidity to the grapes as well as a great mineral

expression

The Zahonero family has a very close connection with Nature and a very special relationship with wine. In Finca San Blas, their vast estate of 585 hectares in Requena, mostly lush forests, they grow a wide variety of grapes vines, such as Bobal, Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Merseguera, Xarello and Chenin Blanc, selecting only the best grapes in search of terroir wines with character but extremely elegant.

The domain: a unique natural area located 2 km Southwest of Requena (about 80 km West of Valencia in the highlands) where the family grows olives, almonds, cereals and vines along with the local flora composed of pines, junipers, aromatics herbs such as rosemary and saffron. The result is a land that is impregnated with all kind of flavors and that gratefully conveys its personnality and character into the wines.

Once we climb to the highest point of Finca San Blas, the show is unsurpassed. Our eyes are recreated before a colourful kaleidoscope: different tones and shades of green, brown, yellow and ochre which make up this amazing puzzle.

The vineyards: with an average altitude of 700 m above sea level, the vine is the major crop on the domain with 83 ha. It grows in its valleys and its gentle slopes, surrounded by this nature that protects it from the typical strong winds of the mountain climates.

The climate of Utiel-Requena is Mediterranean with continental features, with long and cold winters and dry, warm and short summers, as well as a marked thermal amplitude between day and night (sometimes up to 30 ° C), very conducive to a slow and proper maturation of the grapes. These weather conditions also protect the vine from diseases, this being less prone to attacks of plagues.

The trellis system to 2800-3500 vines per hectare favors a high leaf surface, which decisively determines the optimal ripening of the grapes.

The winery: as in the most traditional style of the classic French château moved to our culture, the winery is located in the center of the estate. That way, craft character of the wines is preserved and wine making becomes something natural, organic, as the winery is the core that harmonizes and balances: after the manual harvest in small crates of 10 kg, grapes are meticulously chosen at the selection table before falling into the vats by natural gravity. The natural slope of the winery removes the need for unnecessary and harmful use of pumps.

Winemaker: there is a strong link, beyond the professional one, between the Zahonero family and his winemaker. Nicolas Sanchez, a specialist of the Bobal grape variety, is Professor of Viticulture at the School of Viticulture and Enology of Requena and the Polytechnic University of Valencia. Together they have set challenges and innovated where no cellar had dared before, planting new varieties unknown in the area, implementing processing methods ever used in the region (such as not submerging the cap) or importing the techniques of Tokaj for their latest creation, a sweet botrytized white wine.

The wines: terroir wines with a strong character but yet extremely silky and elegant, which are the result of their environment, being heir to a unique natural wealth, which expresses the personality of an estate that is much more than vineyards.

In the inland of the province of Alicante, in the heart of the Monastrell growing wine region, Finca Collado combines in its restored winery dating from the 19th Century a marked traditional character in the production of its wines, with the inimitable personality that prints to them the winemaker Joan Guia.

In total harmony with its surroundings, this family winery produces limited production of their handcrafted wines, searching for the identity of each parcel of their 12 ha of old vineyards of Monastrell, Garnacha, Forcallat, Merseguera, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Moscatel, Merlot and Bobal in a very unique terroir that transmits minerality, complexity and elegance to the wines.

Location: Finca Collado is located in Salinas, in the highlands of Alicante, in the region of Alto Vinalopó, at 40 km from the Mediterranean Sea.

The winery is located in the spot named “El Collado”, that gives its name to the winery (Collado means the top of the slope of the valley), with a gentle slope between 500 and 600 meters.

Finca Collado sits in a particular geographical unit, a closed valley without sea access, the bottom of which was occupied until 1950 by some ancient salt mines. The terroir of this area adds exceptional ecological values with a millennial tradition in winemaking in this place.

The domain: Finca Collado owns some 100 hectares of land which were acquired more than 30 years ago by the Castelló family. Only 12 ha are dedicated to vine-growing, meanwhile 70 ha are occupied with various crops (especially almonds and olives trees) and an interesting fauna composed, among others, by the eagle owl or the golden eagle.

The vineyards: Finca Collado soils are well suited to agricultural activity, with good drainage and good water retention, with complex mineral elements that allow producing wines with character and specific nuances of this environment. Thus, every grape varieties were planted depending on the different mineral subsoil as the terroir is also very diverse with different types of soil: calcareous soil gives finesse to the Chardonnay and Monastrell, while iron gives color to Merlot wines, and Garnacha has to deepen its roots in sandy bottom for obtaining water and nutrients.

The Mediterranean climate with continental features fully favors the cultivation of the vines, with many hours of sun in summer and a wide thermal amplitude between day and night which makes possible the slow and proper ripening of the grapes. During the winter, the northwest winds and summer breezes of the Mediterranean Sea which is at 40 km from there, avoid the ambient humidity, cool the grapes and make that very few treatments are needed to produce healthy vines.

The results are single vineyard wines of a particular delicacy and expressiveness, made with care, method and passion in a house-winery that catch any heart visitor forever, due to the exceptional hospitality and welcome of the people who make Finca Collado possible (the same people who can’t hide how much they love their work). It is said that the great Spanish writer Azorín liked walking around Finca Collado to seek inspiration, and he captured the beauty and uniqueness of this winery with soul and its surroundings in a few of his writings.

Vinomaniac is our own brand we make in different Spanish appellations. Handcrafted wines, running away from those industrial and artificial ones with no personality, that are too standardized and with too much wood. As in everything, the key is in a good balance: we make artisanal wines on a small-scale basis, which are intense but light, complex but easy to drink and to understand.

All our domains are sized on a human scale and we make wines in the most natural way possible, respecting also the environment. The result are terroir wines, with character but extremely elegant that are pleasant to everyone.

Altitude wines: the high altitude (from 600 to 900 meters above sea level) and the Mediterranean climate with very pronounced continental features (with long, cold winters and short, hot summers) as well as the wide temperature range, contribute to give to the grapes a good acidity and aromas, during a slow and harmonious ripening. The particular microclimate prevents moisture, refreshes the grape vines and makes that very few treatments are needed on the grapes to be healthy.

The soils and the grapes: the loamy, calcareous or clay soils with complex mineral elements, allow us to produce wines with character and specific nuances of each environment. Only the best grapes from

low yields are selected, which guarantees highly expressive wines. We favor the indigenous grape varieties such as Bobal or Monastrell, but also use foreign grapes like Merlot or Sauvignon Blanc if they bring even more refinement to the set. We harvest manually and by night or very early in the morning, so the grapes reach the winery fresh and intact.

Sustainability: we care for the grapes and we care for the environment. The microclimate of each domain protects the vines from the diseases, allowing us to make a minimum of treatments to the fields and to the grapes. All our actions respect Nature in our daily concern to take care of the earth and to transmit to future generations a healthy environment. We act that way not to follow a trend, but by pure conviction that it is the right thing to do.

Winemaking techniques and aging: we disregard aggressive treatments of clarification, stabilization or filtration to preserve all the qualities of the wines. We also take advantage of natural gravity as often as possible to fill the vats, doing without the harmful use of pumps. For the aging, we use wooden vats or large barrels (preferably French oak) in order not to provide excessive wood to the wines, in our constant search for wines which have a perfect balance between fruit and wood.

Vinomaniac is a touching character who lives with passion his love for wine, tasting, experimenting, comparing, but above all, enjoying it. He drinks in moderation but with all senses on alert to savor every sip of a good wine (with the bad one you should’t waste your time).

All our wines and vintages have been awarded with a Gold Medal in the respected wine contests organized by Gilbert & Gaillard and obtained more than 90 points when tasted by the prestigious Northamerican wine critic James Suckling.

Fernando Bermúdez takes charge almost alone of all the tasks and responsibilities of the family-run winery that has the last name of his ancestors, Gómez y Rial: he’s at the same time a committed vintner, a tireless winemaker and an affable salesperson. Like all those who are driven by a passion, his life took a turn nearly 20 years ago when he decided to follow and hold the wine tradition that began the grandparents of the family.

This artisan seeks to reflect in each of his wines the pureness and the varietal expression of the indigenous grape Albariño. The care given to the vineyards, the microclimate of the area and a careful winemaking allow for obtaining Atlantic wines which are extremely aromatic and elegant at the same time.

Location: the winery is located inside the Ulla Valley, at 10 km from Santiago de Compostela (Galicia). Ribeira do Ulla is one of the five sub-areas of the Rias Baixas appellation. The vineyards stretch along the Ulla river (one of the mouths of the Atlantic Ocean), on both sides of it, where plains coexist with mountain areas.

The characteristic microclimate of this valley makes it an ideal place for agriculture: grasslands, orchards, vineyards and beautiful gardens of camellias, to name a few. For its unique beauty, the area is known

as the “orchard and garden of Compostela”. The important cultural, gastronomic, architectural, ethnographic and natural heritage around the winery is impressive, as evidenced by the Cape Finisterre or the city of Santiago de Compostela, whose historic center has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO.

The vineyards: the 4 hectares of vineyards of the winery Gómez & Rial grow under a mild climate in winter and warm in summer, with abundant rains that keep a permanent greenery and the necessary sunshine hours for the grapes to fully and correctly develop.

Soils are sandy, shallow and slightly acidic. The vineyards, located on the slopes of the granitic mountains of Ulla Valley, are supported by granite stakes called “bower vine”, that uplift grapes for a better maturation and the taming of the vigor of the plant.

The vines are trellised in the single cordon training system. Daily care in the vineyards ensures the origin and quality of the wines from Gómez & Rial.

Method and philosophy: the handcrafted processes are eco-friendly, with the aim of caring for the grapes and the environment. Throughout the growing season, the vineyards are worked to produce fewer quantity but higher quality grapes. The grapes are selected in the vineyards at the exact moment of perfect balance between sugar and acid content, which ensures the excellent quality of the final product. The harvest is all done by hand in small crates so that the grapes reach the winery in an optimum condition. The soft methods which are employed in the winemaking process permit to preserve the natural qualities of the wine.

Sustainable viticulture is embraced, not using any herbicides at all.

The wines: a limited and qualitative production of modern style Albariño, easy to drink, with many hints and personality. The varietal expression of the Albariño grape is very well defined, with distinguished floral and intense fruity aromas, as well as a fine and prolonged aftertaste and a marked Atlantic character.

Talking to the owner of Pasiego, José Luis Salón, reconciles anyone with humanity. A sweet way of looking, a genuine smile, an harmonic modulation accompanying a soft voice that convey to the listener confidence and curiosity for his wines: a good man can not make bad wines.

Since the 90s, he is leading the project of handcrafted wines of the entire family in the altitude of the DOP Utiel-Requena (900 m), having been one of the first to convert the capricious grape variety Bobal, so difficult to tame, in great wines. A lot of faith, a good dose of imagination and tireless work were needed to implement the dream machine and get a very elegant way to express the intensity and power of Bobal. Nowadays, he has surrounded himself with experts such as Richard Smart (one of the leading experts in viticulture in the world) and Mario Malafosse (disciple of Michel Rolland) in his constant pursuit of sublimation, but on a human scale.

Vineyards: the grapes come from the 15 hectares of vineyards of the family in Sinarcas, the last village of Valencia before Cuenca (West of Valencia, 100 km inland). This small town is the second highest of the DOP Utiel-Requena, at 900 m above sea level. The clay-calcareous soils, the altitude and the cold weather of Sinarcas (with long and cold winters that can reach 20ºC below zero and short, hot summers) as well as a wide day-night thermal amplitude, bring great acidity and aromas to the grapes. The orientation and the slight slope North-South as well as the use of the trellis system allow a perfect insolation that guarantees an optimum ripening.

In spots like “La Blasca” and “La Suertes”, Bodegas Pasiego grows indigenous varieties such as Bobal but also Tempranillo, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Chardonnay and Sauvignon Blanc.

Method and philosophy: from the belief that quality wines are made in the vineyards, the aim of Bodegas Pasiego is to make the most of the soil’s ressources, so that a daily check is carried out in the field.

José Luis focuses on obtaining low yields, carrying out plantations with high densities, weak rootstocks and clones and alternating practices as no-till and no fertilizing the parcels, in order the vines have the minimum vigor as possible.

Afterwards, just before the veraison, a cluster thinning is done, leaving each vine perfectly drawn with the right production and distributed along the cord, providing maximum aeration.

This practice, along with the pre-harvest leafless (which provides more sunshine to the cluster) and the exceptional microclimate of Sinarcas, allow a minimum of treatments to the field and grapes, permitting to Bodegas Pasiego to develop eco-friendly practices, not overlooking to be certified, but by pure conviction that it is the right attitude towards the environment.

Harvest by hand in small crates of 15 kg or mechanically and by night for certain varieties, fermentation in small stainless steel tanks of 3000 and 4500 liters, pre-fermentative cold macerations, controlled temperature, long macerations and 30 oak barrels in an air-conditioned basement complete the artisanal process of this winery with soul that gives us every year the gift of between 12000 and 18000 bottles.

Nature and sustainability are the cornerstone of the philosophy of Bodegas Pasiego. The wines are not submitted to aggressive treatments of clarification, stabilization or filtration to preserve its natural qualities. Corks come from sustainable cork oak forests of the Sierra de Espadán in Castellón. All the interventions of Bodegas Pasiego are respectful with nature in their daily concern to respect the earth and transmit to future generations a healthy environment, in order to, among other things, transmit to them the legacy of such a personal winery.

Celler Bernaví is born from the concerns of three young and passionate technicians who were found of everything related with vineyards and wines: the brothers Marco and Gino Bernava and the wife of the first one, Ruth Fullat Sisteré. They were so fascinated by the grape growing and wine production potential of the region of Terra Alta in Tarragona (near Montsant and Priorat) that they decided to start their own Italo-Catalan wine project. They bet on a clearly personal and family approach, recovering indigenous grapes like Garnacha blanca, Garnacha tinta, Moscatel, Samsó (also called Cariñena) and Morenillo, and planting foreign varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Montepulciano. The result of the union between Italian and Catalan grape varieties and wine-making traditions are unique wines, an interpretation of the Catalan terroir from Terra Alta with elegance in the pure style of the Italian Tuscany: a fine varietal expression, rich in nuances, enriched by the personal touch of these incredible bosom friends.

The domain and the vineyards: Domain Mas Vernet, with a history dating back to 1694, is located North of Vilalba dels Arcs, along the Camino de Berrús that leads to the valley of the Ebro river. It is at 500 meters above sea level, in a prelittoral area where the Mediterranean climate is enriched with the

nuances of the characteristic Continental climate of inland Spain: here the wide temperature variations between day and night during the summer, abundant sunshine and low rainfall favors optimal maturation of the grapes.

The cultivation is carried out in quaternary chalky and loamy terraces. There, soils are very deep and generous and rich in lime and gypsum which is the perfect home for the vines that are working sometimes in both extreme as fascinating conditions.

Part of the vineyards of Celler Bernaví is 85 years old and is goblet pruned, the other part being young vines planted in espalier, with an optimal orientation to take advantage of sunlight and winds.

Method and philosophy: the climate of the area also allows a vine growing which is extremely respectful for the environment. The viticulture which is practiced by Bernaví is respectful of natural balances, with covering vegetation for organic inputs to the soil, low density planting patterns, integrated vine diseases management and strictly controlled balance between canopy and production in every vine. In this corner of Catalonia, Bernaví has decided to seek synergies between climate, soil, grape varieties and agronomic and oenological techniques to maximize the expression of each variety and characterize the quality of its productions to be true “terroir wines”.

The grapes are selected at veraison and manually harvested by night in small boxes of 15-20 kg at their best moment of maturity.

In the cellar, French and Slavonian oak vats of 3,000 liters are used to respect all primary characteristics of the wines, as well as the harmonization of color and tannins and the integration of the aromas.

The bottling process also respects the natural qualities of the wine, as could not be otherwise in a coherent project that seeks harmony and authenticity.
