The very first frame we shown, is this establishing shot of New York City. The colours in the scene are mainly browns and neutral colours showing the city in a negative dull light – which is very different to real life.

Isolation is immediately shown through this establishing shot of the city. The lack of people is shown through mise en scene – by the empty roads and streets of a busy city. Usually, Times Square is a hustling atmosphere, but here it is empty. Which raises concern with the audience that something is wrong.

Diegetic sound is used in this scene, of the car engines roar and the fast camera action compliments the context of the racing car through the trees. What I like about the camera work is that is very slick and straight and the shots before were very still – this has connotations with the empty lifeless of the city as very ‘still’. We are able to explore the setting and scene more without being distracted by the unusual camera techniques.

When the deer squeals we see a contrast between nature and technology, which emphasizes both sounds. We are shown a POV shot from the cars perspective, this allows us to put ourselves into the scene almost like we are driving the car. The fast past context of the car and running deer's contrast against the lifeless city and therefore heightens the tension.

Abandoned police cars and cars represent the lack of law in the city and also raises a question in the audiences mind.

Throughout the whole sequence the only dialogue used is between Will Smith and his companion. It displays his character to be very isolated similarly to the city – because he hasn’t got anyone else to talk to. The audience would see the communication between him and the dog as an act of loneliness which challenges society's ideas. Isolation proceeds to be a theme throughout the sequence till the very end.
