In the effort of minimizing the environmental impact caused by shipping various regulations

have been recently adopted, or will soon be ratified. The most important evidence of those

approaching are the IMO MARPOL Annex VI focusing on SOx emissions, and the IMO Global

Ballast Water Convention. Several ship owners will therefore require safe and reliable installations

Special care have been taken to protect the environment from air pollution. IMO MARPOL NOx

regulation is the dominant guideline for marine industries.

The IMO NOx Tier II and III regulations took effect from 1 January 2016 requiring 80 percent

less NOx emissions compared with NOx Tier I. This amount of NOx reduction is generally not

achieved by the engine itself. Hence, a separate device is required to meet Tier II, III regulations

in this respect.

Certification of NoNOx SCR System:

SCR system and relevant certification procedure for marine application is defined by IMO.

According to resolution MEPC.198(62), SCR system is considered as an engine component.

Therefore, instead of separate certification of SCR system, IMO NOx verification in combination

with engine is required according to Scheme A and Scheme B.

NoNOx SCR system can be verified and receive IMO NOx Tier III certification at HHI-EMD test-bed

according to Scheme A.

Hi-GAS is an LNG fuel gas supply system for dual fuel engines based on high and low pressure

supply, which means it can effectively supply high pressure LNG to the ME-GI engine while also

As slow steaming has become more of a normal operating procedure, original design for high

speed container carriers could not operate their best performance. Combination of bulbous

bow retrofit and propeller re-design could improve vessel’s efficiency about 6~10 % according to

operating condition and our customers expressed their satisfaction with the results.

Bulbous Bow Retrofit:

To minimize wave making resistance at new operating profile, parameters of bulbous bow

shape such as length, height and width are designed many combinations and analyzed by CFD

(Computational Fluid Dynamics) for choosing best one.

The final design of bulbous bow will be tested at towing tank to verify improved performance.

Propeller Re-Design:

HMRI could improve ship performance by newly designed propeller at new operating profile. The

optimum propeller design is performed using CFD analysis and accumulated lots of experience.

Risk of cavitation erosion is also checked by CFD analysis in design process and verified by model

test at cavitation tunnel.

As HHI is one of the biggest propeller makers in the world, the re-designed propellers could be

manufactured and provided seamlessly with torsional vibration calculation, shaft alignment and

approval of Class.

Experienced engineers could be attended at the repair ship yard to supervise a process of a

propeller change and installation.

Hi-PSD® is one of the most effective devices used for ship fuel saving. It generates additional

thrust and compensate for propeller rotational energy losses with the pre-swirl flow in front of

the propeller. In addition, the in-homogeneous wake distribution on the propeller plane can

reduce the level of hull vibration as well as propeller cavitation. The sea trials and model tests

confirmed that Hi-PSD® can increase propulsion efficiency by 3-6 % depending on the ship type.

Propeller boss cap fin is a widely recognized energy saving device, developed about 20 years

ago, which consists of small fins attached to the propeller boss cap. This device reduces the

propeller hub vortex cavitation as well as increases the propulsive efficiency. The efficiency gain

has been reported to reach about 3-5 % at full scale, whereas 0.5-1.5 % at model scale*.

Hi-Fin® is a kind of propeller boss cap fin with end-plat. The end-plate enables a relatively small

area of the fin to generate the same performance as a conventional fin as found in winglet of

airplane, and as a result, the length of the boss cap is shortened to increase applicability.

The X-twisted leading edge combined with full spade rudder system provides many benefits

for high speed vessels in comparison with the conventional semi-spade rudder system. Typical

applications include containerships, LNG carriers, pure car carriers and naval vessels.

the ship hydrodynamic characteristic. The length and size of the bulb are determined after

optimization analysis in order to maximize the propulsion efficiency, considering propeller

Ship fuel saving

Hi-Rudder™T (Hyundai flow adapted rudder), a full spade rudder for twin propulsion vessels, is

designed to generate an additional thrust and simultaneously reduce low pressure peak through

extensive study on the flow characteristics behind the propeller at the location of the rudder,

hence maximizes propulsive efficiency as well as minimizes cavitation erosion.

Especially on twin propulsion vessels, flow behind the propeller is affected by the stern shape

and is much different from that on single propulsion vessels. As a result, when Hi-Rudder™T

is fully adapted to flow it gives a higher efficiency-gain for the twin propulsion vessels in

comparison to the conventional symmetry section rudder. (Patent pending)

A required power to propel a ship in sea is affected by its attitude. This means that fuel can be

saved by controlling trim even under the same amount of cargo loading.

HGS offers the optimal point in operations through numerical and/or experimental

optimization analysis on the trim, which can help in reducing fuel consumption by

1-5 % in comparison with non-optimized trim operations.

We secure higher accuracy for precise prediction on the performance of a ship using HiFoam™,

a CFD analysis tool developed by HHI based on OpenFOAM®.

Since the introduction of Alpha Lubricator system on MC/- engines, it has proven good operating

results in terms of reduction in cylinder oil consumption and gas emission, and uniform and

optimal cylinder liner wear down.

Benefits:

Substantial over-lubrication at low load generates deposits on the piston crown and rings

increasing the risk of damage to the cylinder liners. By adapting the new lubricator layout, the

Alpha Lubricator, a complete lubrication optimization at all engine loads is now possible.

Major components are Alpha Lubricator, Pump Station, Load Transmitter, Trigger System (shaft

encoder) and Backup Trigger System.

Turbocharger (T/C) cut-off is applicable for 2 Stroke Engine with 3 or 4 T/C.

The T/C cut-off system will improve the SFOC during low load operation.

Benefits:

Concept of T/C Cut-off

The T/C cut-off system consist of two valves, one mounted on the compressor outlet side

and one at the turbine inlet side of the T/C. During low load operation, a T/C may be cut-off

by closing the valves, which are operated manually and locked in the desired position. When

running with T/C cut-off special measure must be taken in order to protect the T/Cs from

overspeed. Consequently, a T/C overspeed slow down is activated.

The T/C speed must be monitored by the alarm system when high T/C speed alarm is released

and in case of high T/C a speed alarm is released. In addition, the speed of each T/C is monitored

by the alarm system and slow down function. The T/C cut-off system is introduced as an option

for new ships as well as retrofit purposes.

Slide fuel valve is designed to optimize combustion and to achieve a cleaner engine. Since its

introduction, this valve has been installed on all the latest versions of large bore engines, larger

than 80 bore. To meet future regulatory requirements we recommend the slide duel valve

retrofit for engines in service.

Most of the main engines were designed for high speed vessels. Due to circumstance engine’s

MCR is to changed at lower load points for higher efficiency with reduced SFOC (specific fuel oil

consumption).

• Specify the new operating and maximum speed of the vessel

• Investigate full engine de-rating potential

• Calculate torsional vibration

Maintenance on Pneumatic Control System:

The main engine remote control system consisting or electric devices, mechanical linkage devices

and pneumatic devices, ensures the safety of the vessel during voyage. To maintain the best

condition, we recommend carrying out periodic and scheduled maintenance in addition to daily

maintenance as any malfunction in the system can hinder your voyage.

Based on performance and experience, we offer total maintenance service and plan for each

vessel, including next scheduled maintenance. For owners who are interested in maintenance

service, please be assured that Hyundai Global Service will do its utmost to meet your every

requirement from quotation to total service.

Cylinder Liner Wear Measurement by VAK Tool:

HGS provides the service of Cylinder Liner Wear Measurement with VAK tool. Without

overhauling of cylinder cover, VAK can provide a quick and easy way of measuring cylinder liner

and correct worn-out data to ship.

Benefits:

VAK is designed for Cylinder Liner Wear Measurement. This tool consists of wear gauge, depth

gauge and note book. The notebook connects to the gauge by Bluetooth. Wear gauge is

positioned on piston top land and measures the cylinder liner inside during engine turning and

transits the measuring data to notebook. Depth gauge is placed under the piston and transits

the position data of wear gauge to notebook.

The measuring time of one cylinder is estimated at about 1.5 hour. Firstly, the gauges are

placed and installed on cylinder liner and piston top side, the vessel information is input into the

notebook and the indicator cock on the cylinder cover is opened to insert the communication

cable. Secondly, the wear of cylinder liner is measured by turning the engine. The data measured

from wear gauge and depth gauge is displayed and recorded on the notebook.

Finally, the installed gauges is dismantled.

2-Stroke Engine

HGS will provide correct measuring data to ship owner which is helpful for evaluating the cylinder liner behavior and making appropriate maintenance plans for the ship owner

Hyundai thrusters should be periodically inspected and maintained to ensure high performance

and safe operation as per the maker’s recommendation and HGS is ready to offer the overhaul

maintenance on behalf of the client.

The overhaul maintenance puts emphasis on replacement of O.D Box (NF type) and EAL seals

applicable to bio oil. HGS has developed a new 3rd oil distributor from existing rotary seal type

to non-seal & floating type for improved pitch control performance & long life time and we have

finished the design of sealing for EAL oil in order to keep pace with the USA VGP2013.

HGS is now ready and will provide with EAL-sealing and new O.D Box for the best performance

at the vessel’s dry docking and we will do our utmost to meet with all of customer’s requirement

through regular overhaul maintenance.

In order to maintain the best condition and well-balanced performance, Hyundai Global Service

carries out periodic and scheduled maintenance on behalf of the client as per our regular

maintenance plan.

Benefits:

About every three years, depending upon the nature of the service, the unit should be

dismantled and thoroughly cleaned, inspected and all parts should be examined for wear.

In this way, the cause of excessive wear can be found and corrected before any damage occurs.

Based on performance and experience, we can offer total maintenance service as per regular

HGS provides preventive maintenance services for generators, motors and the related

instruments. We have accumulated many experiences of rotating machinery maintenance for

over 40 years.

Benefits:

HGS serves to extend the life cycle of the machine. Soundness of the rotating machine can be

achieved by overhaul maintenance. We perform visual check wire termination and winding, dry

cleaning (use vacuum and dry clothes), winding resistance check, measurement of insulation

resistance, bearing overhaul inspection, isolation test of stator and rotor, insulation diagnostic

test and special test upon customer’s request. For the generator, additional function test of

excitation system is included.

Hyundai Global Service offers a regular check-up the whole power system covering power

management system, protection of generators and feeders and power distribution system, and

propose customized solution like a replacement of the potentially defective device and a partial

modification depends on the conditions. The service shall be served by well qualified engineer

who has accumulated many experiences of ship’s power system for over 40 years.

Benefits:

HGS serves to extend the life cycle of the power system. In order to maintain the initially

designed performance and minimize operating cost, it is recommended to carry out a regular

basis preventive check-up for the whole power system. In accordance with the inspection results,

replacement of potentially defective products or partial modification could be required.

While the service is provided, the resetting for protection relay or the correction of parameter

for power management system can be adjusted by the engineer.
