Page 2: Hypothesis

LaunchCarefully inspect the below photograph, then:1. Write down 1-2 questions you may have about the photograph.2. Pick one question from #1 and answer it with your best guess.

Page 3: Hypothesis

Look at the image below. Write down what it is, AND

how you know.

Are you sure? Look closer…

Scientific

Questions

&

Hypotheses!

Page 6: Hypothesis

What are SCIENTIFIC questions? They are ANSWERABLE!

Questions that can be answered by performing an experiment or a test.

Page 7: Hypothesis

Consider this SCENARIO…You have 2 bicycles. One of

them is kept in your room, but there is not more space for the other, so you leave it outside, even when it rains or snows. You notice that the bike inside is just fine and doesn’t show signs of rusting, but the one outside has rusted in many places.

Page 8: Hypothesis

GOOD SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS1. Do metals rust faster when

exposed to water than when they are not?

2. Does sunlight make metals rust faster?

3. Does being around plants like grass and trees make a metal rust faster?

Page 9: Hypothesis

BAD SCIENTIFIC QUESTIONS

1.Why is rust the color brown?

2.Where does rust come from?

3.Why is there rust?

Page 10: Hypothesis

What is a HYPOTHESIS?

An educated guess.

A LOGICAL (making sense) answer to a scientific question.

A TESTABLE prediction that can be proven wrong with an experiment/test (DOESN’T need to be correct, just LOGICAL)

Page 11: Hypothesis

HYPOTHESES DO NOT NEED TO…

BE “IF… THEN…” STATEMENTS!

I repeat: Being an “if… then…” statement DOES NOT automatically make it a hypothesis.

Hypotheses can be written in “if… then…” form and in other ways!

Page 12: Hypothesis

HYPOTHESES ARE

Supported with evidence!

Page 13: Hypothesis

GOOD HYPOTHESES Question 1: Do metals rust faster when exposed

to water than when they are not? Hypothesis 1: When water is around, metals

will rust faster since I’ve witnessed rusted water pipes.

Question 2: Does sunlight make metals rust faster? Hypothesis 2: If metals are exposed to

sunlight, then they will rust faster since sunlight ruins other things (for example, sunlight fades colors quicker).

Question 3: Does being around plants like grass and trees make a metal rust faster? Hypothesis 3: Plants make metals rust faster

because my metal fence is constantly surrounded by plants and it is rusting.

Page 14: Hypothesis

BAD HYPOTHESES

Bikes will rust.

Rust will be brown.

Rust comes from the air.

Bikes will rust faster when they are not locked to something.

Page 15: Hypothesis

PRODUCT (Scientific Q’s): Scenario: Davon and Cheryl are married. They both

have their own cars; Davon drives the SAME TYPE of care Cheryl drives: both cars are Toyota Corollas. Davon usually drives 20 miles per hour faster than Cheryl does. Cheryl needs to refill her car with gas every 2 weeks, but Davon needs to do so every week.

1) Based on the scenario, select which of the following COULD be a possible scientific question A) Why do Davon and Cheryl drive Corollas? B) Why does Davon need to fill his tank more often than

Cheryl does? C) Who drives their car longer, Davon or Chery? And, how

much longer does one drive compared to the other? D) Does driving a car faster make it waste more gas?

2) Based on the scenario, select the best hypothesis from the list that could be an answer to a scientific question from above. A) Gas is wasted faster when a man drives a car than when

a woman does. B) Corollas waste less gas than other cars on the market. C) When you drive at higher speeds, you burn off more gas. D) When you drive at lower speeds, you burn off less gas.
