hydroponics essay

Hydroponics: A way to solve world hunger? In this essay I will be talking about why hydroponics seems to be a good solution to world hunger in the future. There are many places in the world in which it is very difficult to grow crops. The reasons are evident: poor or worn-out soils, lacks of space, water deficit and so on. Rich countries can afford importing food but the problem is bigger in poor countries because they can’t. So, what can they do? A good solution appears to be hydroponics, or the growth of crops without the necessity of soil. On one hand some people say that it is unsustainable because it uses mineralized water, which is pollutant, but on the other hand last improvements in the field showed that with very few control systems environmental impact can be highly reduced. One example the application of closed cycles in which the water is recycled. Hydroponics is very suitable for any kind of crop and the growing period is highly shortened. For example lettuce can be grown in 1.5 months instead of 3.5 in regular crops. It helps to get a bigger quantity of food in the same time with lower costs. Furthermore, the necessity of water is lower than in regular crops, against every logical intuition. It makes possible to grow plants even in the dessert. In conclusion, despite it may be unsustainable if it is not well applied, hydroponics seems to be an advantageous way to get food in poor countries.
