How did hydrogen fuel start?
In 2003 the Bush Administration released a statement saying that hydrogen fuel cells is the gasoline of the future
Hydrogen fuel would no longer make the United States rely on foreign oil and would cut ties with the middle east
The Department of Energy spent 1.2 billon dollars on the “Hydrogen Program” which was derived from Bush’s Hydrogen Fuel Initiative

Hydrogen Timeline In 1893 Sir William Robert Grove mixed hydrogen
and oxygen to produce electricity and water, it was inefficient and produced very little energy
In 1889 Ludwig Mond and Charles Langer coined the term, “fuel cell” and tried to build it with air and industrial coal fuel
In the 1920’s Fuel Cell Research in Germany helped paved the way for future cell research
An engineer by the name of Francis T. Bacon began his research for the fuel cell in the 1930’s this proved to be useful in the development of future research
In October of 1959 Harry Karl Ihrig powered the first vehicle with a fuel cell

Hydrogen Timeline (cont.) During the early 1960’s General Electronics produced
the first electrical power powered by fuel cells on NASA’S Gemini and Apollo space capsules
NASA decided that it was too bulky and dangerous for their space shuttles
The first bus was powered by a fuel cell was completed in 1993
The United States passed the Hydrogen Future Act in 1996
In 1998 Iceland transformed its economy into a hydrogen fuel cell based one
In 1999 in Germany released the first hydrogen-based fuel station

The Goals of Hydrogen Fuel and Why it is important
The Goal of Hydrogen Fuel is to reduce petroleum use, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and reduce air pollution
Promote the use of new technology and research on the development of hydrogen fuel
Why is it important? We have only one earth with how much carbon dioxide we put into the air we are ruining it. Why not spent money and time on preserving the earth by means of producing clean and efficient energy for humanity.

Complications with Hydrogen Fuel
Limited Knowledge of the subject
It’s very expensive to fund for research
America spent 1.2 billion dollars on research for hydrogen fuel
However America also spent 1.8 billion on promoting healthy marriage (a.k.a. banning gay marriage)
America also spends 3 billion each month on the Iraq War
Seems like America really seems concerned with promoting hydrogen fuel right?
People aren’t all that ‘hyped’ up about hydrogen fuel
Research companies aren’t really ready to commit their time and money
Hydrogen is really explosive and you can’t get one by itself without it being dangerous and stable
Trying to harness power from hydrogen seems nearly impossible
A professor at Stanford University was quoted saying, “the advantage of hydrogen, if you have to burn carbon fuels (coal, oil, or gas) to manufacture it, would be negligible
![Page 7: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
Fuel Cells would not only affect the United States, but would
affect the entire world This would help the ecosystem dramatically
by giving off less CO2 emissions Fuel cells have the potential to very quickly
double the efficiency of cars while significantly reducing air pollution.
We need a lot of money but researchers are saying if the world is willing to commit to a cleaner energy source by 2020 the world could be seeing a dramatic transition from fossil fuel to hydrogen fuel and a more effective and cleaner energy source
![Page 8: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
Hydrogen is the breakthrough we need
Many technological advances has already been made to make hydrogen the main source of energy
Fossil Fuel is becoming scarce The price of oil would decrease
dramatically If we don’t find a solution for a cleaner
earth we will be tangled up in our own mess
![Page 9: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/9.jpg)
How does hydrogen cells work?
Chemical reactions create energy, so the hydrogen cell is able to create direct electric energy from the breakdown of atoms inside the cell.

Hydrogen Cells in Vehicles Many companies have started to
produce hydrogen fuel cars. Honda, BMW and Chevrolet have their
own hydrogen fuel cell prototype car. California Governor Arnold
Schwarzenegger is pushing to have 200 hydrogen filling stations built by 2010.
Our dependence on oil and oil prices will go down.
![Page 11: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/11.jpg)
Hydrogen Cars VS. Electric Cars
Electric cars are known as total zero emission vehicles, but they need electricity to run.
Electric cars will cause a greater demand on electricity which will make electricity prices go up.
These batteries are not reliable since they need a couple of hours to recharge.
![Page 12: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
Hydrogen Is The Cleanest Energy
To generate electricity some electric companies pollute the environment more as electricity demand grows; electric cars will raise the demand.
Hydrogen cars not only run on water but they purify it and send it back to the environment.

Hydrogen Fuel Vehicles September 12, 2006 BMW announced their first car that runs on water. BMW is putting it on mass production until 2010.
![Page 14: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/14.jpg)
Hydrogen Cell BMW This car can run on water and/or gasoline, the driver chooses
which one he wants to use just by pushing a button. The BMW has 260 BHP and it is able to go 62.1 miles per
gallon of water.
![Page 15: Hydrogen fuel cells](https://reader037.vdocuments.us/reader037/viewer/2022083110/58f25e141a28abfd048b45b3/html5/thumbnails/15.jpg)
Hydrogen Cell BMW The BMW is a zero harmful emission car. Water or hydrogen goes inside the fuel
tank and water vapor comes out the tail pipe.
The water is recycled and purified in the process.
The price is said to be a little higher than the gasoline version of this car but the car provides better and cleaner energy than any other alternate fuel.

Hydrogen powered tractor Usually tractors use diesel fuel which is highly
pollutant. New Holland built a tractor that runs on
hydrogen and it is expected to be mass produced until 2010.
