U-rings are among the most important seals used in hydraulics and pneumatics. Their main function is to seal the cylinder on the piston or piston rod. Whether in an unpressurised state or under pressure, they prevent the medium escaping from the cylinder, thus ensuring the cylinder function.

The characteristics which distinguish U-rings are on the one hand the geometry of the diameter - here a distinction is always made between symmetric and asymmetric designs -but also in the shape and final processing of the sealing lips.

Symmetrical U-rings can be used as piston seals as well as piston rod seals. Asymmetrical U-rings are designed only as piston or piston rod seals. They are optimally adapted to the applications.

The function that all U-rings have in common is diameter energising. The oversized lips allow them to be pressed on to the surrounding sealing surface when built-in, creating linear force around the circumference: in the seal groove and on the dynamic side of the seal, the piston rod and/or the running surface of the cylinder.

The U-ring’s sealing function is guaranteed even in this unpressurized state. The hydraulic liquid is held back at the sealing site which enables a further increase in pressure. This pressure build-up results in the hydraulic contact pressure of the medium against the seal lips overriding the energising factor. The movement of the dynamic side completes the sealing mechanism. The higher the liquid pressure, the more intensive the contact pressure of the seal on the surrounding surfaces and the greater the sealing function.

Materials, design and placing sequence must be adapted to the varying requirements. Whether a U-ring should be made of pure elastomer or whether it should have a support ring, if necessary integrated in a fabric back, depends on the design of the particular cylinder in question.

Different U-ring geometries and materials should be chosen for heavy-duty applications with high safety aspects and little movement, e.g. in derrick cylinders for cranes or hydraulic cylinders in barrages, than those required for working cylinders of earth-moving machinery where the focus is on high resistance to wear. Totally different designs and materials to those used in hydraulics are on the other hand required for pneumatic cylinders.

The requirements of the task and the possibilities of the U-ring must be carefully balanced as these have a decisive influence on the selection of the seal and the resulting operating safety of the system.

acrylonitrile-butadiene caoutchouc — nBr

NBR is the most commonly used material in all areas of seal technology due to its good physical and mechanical characteristics and its excellent processing abilities. For U-rings it is used in hardnesses between 75 and 90 Shore A and for O-rings as energising elements it is generally used in 70 Shore A.

This elastomer has the rigidity, hardness and abrasion resistance necessary for U-rings.

NBR is resistant to most oils and mineral oil based fats used in hydraulics and also to their emulsions with water.

NBR materials have only moderate resistance against weathering and ozone influences if they are not specially developed for these applications. However, the standard resistance is sufficient for most applications of U-rings and their energising elements made of NBR as with typical applications in hydraulics, the elastomer surfaces are moistened with oil or fat. These media form a stable surface protective layer and minimise the intensity of ozone influence.

Generally, the standard NBR90 quality which is used for most U-rings can be applied at temperatures from -30° C to +100° C. The temperature application limits for NBR 70 O-rings as energising elements in U-rings is also from -30° C to +100° C but under special circumstances for both parts a temperature as low as -40° C is still acceptable.

NBR is processed in moulding tools in various compression and vulcanising processes to form U-rings or O-rings.

Fabric materialsFabric materials are textiles or non-specific fibrous materials which are impregnated with elastomer materials.

With textiles that have a woven structure, a distinction is made according to the thickness or weight per surface area, known as grammage. Another distinguishing characteristic is the basic material these textiles are made of, e.g. cotton or synthetic fibre. Cotton textile impregnated with NBR is most frequently used for the production of standard U-rings. Apart from the standard materials, there is a whole range of other textiles available and almost all elastomers for impregnation.

Impregnated fabric materials have numerous advantages over pure elastomers. The most important are, compressive creep resistance, extrusion safety, dimensional stability and low friction and wear behaviour. They also show little inclination to swelling in hydraulic media and are well-suited to applications at low temperatures.

In a two-stage process, the fabric materials are preprocessed into slugs and then vulcanised into seals in a compression moulding die with heat application. A multi-component seal can be produced out of pure elastomer which is moulded on.

PolyurethanePolyurethane is one of the group of elastic thermoplastic materials which have been established in seal technology for many years due to their physical characteristics and efficient processing features. Polyurethan at a hardness range of between 65 and 98 Shore A is used.

Among the most important material characteristics are its great tensile strength, good wear resistance, good flexibility at a temperature range from -40° C to +100° C and also good ageing stability against ozone. The mineral oil based oils and fats used in hydraulics have a minimal influence on the physical properties of Polyurethane.

Materials

Polyurethane TPu92TPU92, with very few exceptions, in the polyurethane used for U-rings. The characteristics of this type of material unite the appropriate rigidity, hardness and in particular, abrasion resistance necessary for U-rings. The injection moulding process applied in most cases requires complex machinery and moulding tools and for this reason is most appropriate for large-scale production.

Polytetrafluorethylene (PTFE)PTFE has numerous positive characteristics which have become indispensable in seal technology. In particular, we would like to emphasise the characteristics which are essential for its application as U-ring material:

PTFE is distinguished by exceptional rigidity and very good gliding characteristics. Due to its extremely low surface energy, it has a very low coefficient of friction (values of under 0.02 are known) and exceptional non-bonding, non-wettable contact surfaces. In addition, its extreme hydrophobia must be mentioned: PTFE is absolutely water-repellent.

It is resistant to almost all chemicals and remains stable within an extremely wide temperature range. Apart from this, it is immune to attack by oxygen, ozone or ultra-violet rays and is therefore completely resistant to weathering.

PTFE does not contain any extractable media which could drift off and adversely affect adjacent materials. It is therefore physiologically completely harmless in contact with foodstuffs and also particularly well-suited for applications in the pharmaceutical and medicinal fields.

Combined with different compounds, PTFE has proved to be excellent material for U-rings. In particular, PTFE/carbon with a 15% - 25% proportion of carbon improves the wear resistance of the material which already has excellent gliding characteristics. The pressure hardness is also increased by this additive.

PTFE alone is only slightly elastic. For this reason the activation of U-rings is compensated with elastic energising elements in the form of stainless steel springs.

Polyoxymethylene POMPolyoxymethylene is a thermoplastic material and is distinguished by its particularly high pressure load bearing ability, rigidity and hardness.

Apart from its application as a pure material, POM can be compounded with extenders to further improve the compressive creep resistance and wear resistance which results in a longer service life. Due to POM’s low water absorption it is not subjected to any volume change which is not always the case with thermoplastics.

Due to its excellent characteristics under extreme loads, POM is often processed as a seal accompanying element, e.g. as a support ring or a piston guiding element with an angular design.

With a temperature range from -40°C to +100° C, POM can be used in almost all standard seal application areas.

Polyoxymethylene is processed by injection moulding in most cases. The slugs can also be processed in a chip removal process.

FKM fluorcaoutchoucThe FKM elastomer is distinguished by its excellent chemical and temperature resistance (from -20° C to +200° C). It therefore plays an important part as a U-ring material outside the standard.

Due to the above characteristics it is essential to use FKM when extremely high temperatures occur in the surrounding of the hydraulic cylinder and highly flammable type D liquids have to be used.

FKM is generally used in 90 Shore A and can also be processed in combination with metal.

Although the materials used in our U-rings are particularly effective and robust, special care is still required during installation in order to avoid mechanical damage especially to the sealing lip. This would inevitably lead to leakage. Furthermore, the U-rings should be checked prior to installation for damage or ageing that could have occurred during transportation or storage. To ensure safe installation, the following precautions should be taken:

1. Installation of the seal must take place with the prestressed side facing the direction of pressure. Particular care must be taken with compact U-rings as the prestressed side is not always easily recognisable.

2. Lead-in chamfers on the cylinder and on the piston rod are essential. The recommended lengths and angles are given in the installation dimensions for the various U-rings in this catalogue.

3. Sharp edges must be deburred and radii and chamfers applied in accordance with the installation guidelines.

4. Dust, dirt, metal chips and any other foreign particles must be carefully removed.

5. Tips of screws and grooves for guide elements, etc. should be covered using an installation cone, as the seal must not be pushed over gaps, drillings or rough surfaces.

6. Cylinders, rods, seals and installation tools must be greased or oiled before installation, giving consideration to compatibility with the medium.

7. Materials are made smoother and expand a great deal more easily for installation if they are heated in oil or hot water at approx. 80°C, giving consideration to the resistance.

8. Any tools used for installation, e.g. cones and mandrels for expansion, should be made of soft material (e.g. POM) and not have any sharp edges.

The function and service life of a hydraulic or pneumatic cylinder depend to a great extent on the sealing elements used. During operation, these are subject to various stresses and must therefore be adapted to the different requirements in terms of material, structure and arrangement. The key criteria are media compatibility and temperature resistance, pressure, friction, wear resistance, stroke speed and frequency as well as service life. Seals, grooves and wipers should already be selected in the construction phase of the cylinder so that the finish of the metal surfaces and the design and dimensions of the grooves can be carefully manufactured in accordance with the installation housing guidelines.

Rounded corners in the groove base (1) ensure the correct position of the U-ring and rounded flanks of the groove’s edges (2) minimise the risk of the seal moving into the metal gap. The suitable surface finish of the groove base (3) and the groove flanks (4), adherence to the tolerances for the

groove width (5), the lead-in chamfer (6) and the dimensions of the seal gap on the side opposite the pressure (7), as well as the surface finish of the opposed surface (8), play a major role in ensuring the optimal service life of the seals.

U-rings can generally be installed in cut housing grooves. However, wider profiles and particularly small inner diameters require an axial opening to the housing. The fit must be taken into consideration accordingly, which requires special experience. Should you require advice, please contact our technical department.

Sufficient guiding for the pistons and the piston rods must be ensured, as seals can never perform guiding tasks.

Wipers ensure that no foreign particles enter the medium system of a cylinder that could destroy the seals. In order to retain a clean system and to protect the environment against oil pollution, no hydraulic cylinder should be used without a wiper.

in the form of a U-ring which can be used as a

piston and piston rod seal due to its symmetrical

sealing lips. Its sealing function is very effective

due to the sealing lips being provided with

radial self energising which is activated by the

25 mm and a thinner profile can always be

installed in cut housing. With an inner diameter

of less than 25 mm, we recommend axially

accessible housing. To push the piston body

and seal into the cylinder pipe or over the

piston rod without damaging it, a lead-in

chamfer C acc. to the following table is

required:

If the housing is provided with a metallic

fitting on the side opposite the pressure, the

service life of the seal is lengthened. Within the

operating parameters given above, depending

on the pressure, a metallic wedge can be fitted

between the cylinder pipe and piston acc. to

the following table:

FunctionThe HRS MA24 is a single function piston rod seal

in the form of a U-ring. Due to its asymmetrical

sealing lips with a slightly indented outer lip

edge, the pressure is guided outwards to

FunctionThe HPRS MA36 is a single function piston rod

seal in the form of a compact U-ring which, due

to its symmetrical seal lips, can be applied as a

piston and piston rod seal. Its sealing function

is very effective as the seal lips are provided

with radial self-energising which is activated

by the system pressure. Its compact design

and the excellent material characteristics of

polyurethane guarantee effective sealing on

the one hand at low as well as high pressure

for extreme loads is provided by the synergy

between the geometric of this seal and the

Wipers are essential elements of hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders. Their function is to remove any dirt collected on the extending piston rod so that no foreign particles can enter the cylinder or the system. The pressure medium would otherwise be polluted which would lead to destruction of the seal and to the moving surfaces and all other parts being damaged.

Materials, design and arrangement must be matched to the most diverse requirements. Whether a wiper consists of pure Elastomer or requires a steel cage around its outer diameter which can either be open or covered by the elastomer, or whether a double wiper is necessary, is dependent on the sealing concept, the rod speed, the stroke frequency and many other factors.

The wipers to be selected for large cylinders used in very heavy mobile applications with a high dirt load have quite different geometrics and materials to the ones for small hydraulic cylinders for internal areas where they only have light loads to move. Wipers in pneumatic cylinders again require different materials and designs.

The careful balancing of the necessities of the task and the wiper’s possibilities has an important effect on selection and this in turn on the function and operating security of the system.

nBr acrylnitrile-butadiene rubberNBR is the most commonly used material in all areas of seal technology due to its good physical and mechanical characteristics and its exceptional processing abilities. It is used at hardnesses between 40 and 90 Shore A.

nBr for wipersWith few exceptions, NBR90 is used for wipers. This type of elastomer combines the characteristics required for wipers; rigidity, hardness and abrasion resistance.

NBR is resistant to most hydraulic media and other mineral oil based lubricants and also to their emulsions with water.

However, NBR materials have only moderate resistance against weathering and ozone influences if they are not specially developed for these applications. Standard resistance of the elastomer is generally sufficient as with typical application in hydraulics the surfaces are moistened with oil or fat. These media form a stable surface protective layer and minimize the intensity of ozone influence.

In general, the NBR90 standard compound can be applied at temperatures from -30°C to + 100°C. With wipers, below-zero temperatures as low as -40°C are still acceptable.

NBR is processed into wipers using moulding tools and stabilized in different processes and depending of its type vulcanised to metal cages. For this purpose, the metal is pretreated and firmly bonded with the elastomer in a tried and tested process to form a single unit.

nBr for O-ringsNBR O-rings in a hardness of 70 Shore A are used as energizing elements in two part wiper types. This standard quality is best suited for this purpose and is one of the most commonly used in the seal market.

It has the advantage of tremendous applicability. However, the composite wipers are subject to the usual constraints of the chemical resistance and temperature limits of NBR. The temperature range for NBR 70 material is -30°C to +100°C.

PolyurethanePolyurethane is one of the group of elastic thermoplastic materials which have established themselves in seal technology since many years due to their physical characteristics and efficient processing features. A hardness range of between 65 and 98 Shore A is used.

Among the most important material characteristics are its very high tensile strength, good wear resistance, good flexibility at a temperature range from -40°C to +100°C, but also good weathering resistance against ozone. The oils and lubricants used in hydraulics have a minimal influence on the physical values of polyurethane.

Polyurethane TPu92TPU92, with very few exceptions, is the polyurethane used for wipers. The characteristics of this type of material unite the appropriate stiffness, hardness and, in particular, abrasion resistance necessary for wipers. The injection moulding process applied in most cases for production requires complex machinery and moulding tools and for this reason is most appropriate for large scale production.

Polyurethane wipers are also often bonded with metal. In a tried and tested process, the pre-processed metal parts are firmly bonded with the polyurethane to form a single unit.

Polyurethane TPu98This quality of polyurethane is only applied for wipers manufactured in a laithed process. On the one hand, its exceptional hardness simplifies the processing and, on the other hand, gives the wipers such high durability that they are extremely well-suited to use with strongly adherent dirt on rods as well as frost and ice.

Materials

PolyamidePolyamide is a thermoplastic material and is distinguished by its particularly high wear resistance, rigidity, hardness and good gliding characteristics. In addition, it has good resistance to most hydraulic media and other mineral oil based lubricants.

As wiper material, polyamide can either be used pure or can be compounded with different fillers for special applications. The wipers made of this material are normally produced by injection moulding and offer a real alternative to the most varied metal wipers. The high wear resistance of these wipers provides them with a particularly long service life and they are highly suitable for heavy duty applications, including use at low temperatures with ice formation.

Should particular geometrics be required, the polyamide wipers can also be produced in a laithed process.

Wipers made of polyamide are generally recommended for use at a temperature range of between -40°C and +100°C.

Polytetraflourethylene (PTFE)The PTFE material has numerous positive characteristics which have become indispensable in seal technology and are ingeniously concentrated in one single material. In particular, we would like to point out the characteristics which are essential for its application as wiper material:

PTFE is distinguished by exceptional stiffness and very good gliding characteristics. Due to its extremely low surface energy, it has a very low coefficient of friction (values of under 0.02 are known) and exceptional non-bonding, non-wettable contact surfaces. In addition, its extreme hydrophobia must be mentioned; PTFE is totally water-repellent.

Apart from this, it is immune to attack by oxygen, ozone or ultra-violet rays and is therefore absolutely resistant to weathering.

PTFE does not contain any extractable media which could drift off and adversely affect adjacent materials. It is therefore physiologically completely harmless in contact with foodstuffs and also particularly well-suited for applications in the pharmaceutical and medicinal fields.

PTFE with different compounds has proved to be excellent material for wipers. In particular, PTFE/bronze with a 40% bronze content; the wear resistance of the material, which already has excellent gliding characteristics, is improved. In addition, this reduces deformation under pressure.

PTFE material is not very elastic on its own. For this reason, the activity of wipers is compensated with an elastic energizing element. Standard O-rings made of elastomer NBR 70 are used for this application. Naturally, O-rings made of other elastomers are available for non-standard applications.

PTFE is characterised by its almost universal chemical resistance and ability to remain stable within a very wide temperature range. Its application with hydraulic oils and mineral oil based lubricants and their water emulsions as well as application temperature limits are, however, restricted by the combination of elastomer components in the wipers.

FKM fluorelastomerThe FKM rubber is distinguished by its excellent chemical and temperature resistance (from -20°C to +200°C). It therefore plays an important part as a wiper material outside the standard.

Due to the above characteristics it is essential to use FKM when extremely high temperatures occur in the hydraulic cylinder and highly flammable type D liquids have to be used.

FKM is generally used in 90 Shore A and can also be processed in combination with metal.

Notwithstanding the strength of the material, particular care is required with the installation of wipers to prevent damage which would lead to inefficiency of the wipers before initial operation.

■ When using double wipers, depending on the subsequent seal arrangement, a leakage hole may be necessary, through which the retained oil is returned to the system.

■ It is imperative to have lead-in chamfers in the installation area with different wipers. You will find the recommended lengths and angles in the installation dimension information for each wiper.

■ Sharp edges must be deburred and radii and chamfering provided according to the installation dimension information. Tips of screws and sharp edges must be covered.

■ Dust, dirt, chips and other foreign particles must be carefully removed.

■ Installation areas and wipers must be greased or oiled before installation, giving consideration to compatibility with the medium.

■ Any tools used for installation, e.g. mandrels, should be made of soft material and not have any sharp edges.

FunctionThe HPS K30 is a double acting piston seal.

Its design provides an exceptionally good

sealing function with high loads and very good

static tightness. Various ranges are available.

Whereas the standard series covers general

demands, the heavy duty series

provides for extreme conditions with abrupt

loading, high pressure and changing pressures.

The light duty series does not require much

housing space and is used when only a small

space is available. The thickness of the seal

section in the various series is adaptable to

requirement. The cross section of the elastomer

O-ring is changed correspondingly.

Independent of the size of the gap, it is

necessary to centre the piston using suitable

guidings and taking up the radial power load.

HrS S30

is a two-piece rod seal consisting of a dynamic

sealing ring and a static O-ring.




FunctionThe HRS S30 is a double acting rod seal.

It is preferably used for short strokes of high

frequency and under high pressu¬re loads. To

counteract the minimal permeability which

occasionally occurs under extreme pressure

conditions, it is advisable to use, in succession, a

combination of HRS S30 as the primary and

HRS S31 as a secondary seal. Various ranges

are available. Whereas the standard series

covers general demands, the heavy duty

series provides for extreme conditions with

abrupt loading, high pressure and changing

pressures. The light duty series does not require

much housing space and is used when only a

small space is available. The thickness of the

seal section in the various series is adaptable

to require¬ment. The cross section of the

elastomer O-ring is changed correspondingly. It

is advisable to install a double wiper ring so that

the remaining oil film is removed from the rod

and returned to the system. Independent of the

size of the gap, it is necessary to centre the rod

using suitable guidings and taking up the radial

power load.

HrS S31

is a two-piece rod seal consisting of a dynamic

FunctionThe HRS S31 is a single acting rod seal. It is

particularly suitable for extreme loads and is

usually doubled. The special shape of its sealing

lip guarantees sufficient lubricating of the

gap on the one hand and prevents disruptive

intermediate pressure from building up on the

other. Various ranges are available. Whereas

the standard series covers general demands,

the heavy duty series provides for extreme

conditions with abrupt loading, high pressure

and changing pressures. The light duty series

does not require much housing space and

is used when only a small space is available.

The thickness of the seal section in the various

Modern hydraulic and pneumatic systems are now substantially smaller in their design and also markedly more efficient. This advancement can, in essence, be attributed to the highly¬developed seal technology.

Hubata Seals’s PTFE piston and rod seals fulfil all demands. Their compact construction is suitable not only for standard but also for specific seal housings. They continue to gain in market importance due to their special advantages - space-saving construc¬tion, long life as well as good physical, chemical and mechanical properties . PTFE’s material mix recipe and our special processing guarantee outstanding quality which cannot be achieved with conventionally produced PTFE materials.

elastomer ring energized An assembled seal contains two components: one dynamic sealing ring made of PTFE compound as the primary seal and a static elastomer O-ring as the secondary seal. The func¬tion is based on an approved system whereby the installation actuated O-ring statically seals in the groove bed and presses the dynamic sealing PTFE ring on to the counter surface. The energized O-ring offers even during the unpressurized state a certain preload so to allow the pressure to be build up in working condition.

The pressure of the medium to be sealed on the O-ring results in perfectly spread sealing surface pressure provided by the radially positioned contact pressure on the PTFE ring. In this manner, the total sealing strength is always as great as is necessary for the pressure required.

The structural shapes of Hubata Seals’s Sand K series, the PTFE compounds and types of elastomer are diverse and variable. However, their applications and surrounding conditions have certain limitations due to their combination with elastomer O-rings.

Spring energized With applications where elastomer loses its effectiveness, for example at very high or very low temperatures, incompatibility with the medium, etc., spring energized PTFE seals, e.g. those in the Hubata Seals MA series, are better suited. The functional principle is similar to that described above. The mechanical preload and durable elasticity are achieved by a metal spring integrated in the lip seal.

The material of the metal spring is determined by the medium used and the structural shape by the spring force required. Standard equipment for Hubata Seals’s PTFE seals are springs made of non-corrosive, acid-resistant steel no. 1.4310. When even higher medium stability is demanded, highly alloyed ELGILOY® stainless steel is used.

There are two kinds of spring to choose from. Springs with a V shape have a slightly increasing spring characteristic with great deformation capacity and are used most frequently. Springs with an H shape command rapidly increasing spring force within a small deformation area.

Spring energized PTFE seals are more efficient than those supported by elastomer rings and thereby complete the broad range of applications covered by Hubata Seals’s PTFE seals to maximum effect.

Although PTFE is a highly efficient and robust seal material, it is still necessary to be particularly careful when installing a PTFE seal to prevent damaging the sealing lip which would result in leakage even before being put into service. The following instructions should be followed for safe installation:

■ Installation of the seal must take place with the preloaded side facing the direction of pressure. Particular care must be taken with compact seals as the preloaded side is possibly not easy to recognize.

■ It is imperative to have lead-in chamfers on the cylinder and on the rod. You will find the recommended lengths and angles in the installation dimension information for the different seals.

■ Sharp edges must be deburred and radii and chamfering must be done according to the installation dimension information.

■ Tips of screws, grooves for guide rings, etc. should be covered because the seal should not be pushed over gaps, drillings or rough surfaces.

■ Dust, dirt, chips and other foreign particles must be carefully removed.

■ Cylinders, rods and seals must be greased or oiled before installation, giving consideration to compatibility with the medium.

■ A PTFE seal expands and reverts to its original shape a great deal more easily if it is heated in oil or hot water (approx. 80°–120°).

■ Any tools used for installation, e.g. cones and mandrels for expansion or calibration, should be made of soft material and not have any sharp edges.

Seals play a very decisive role in the functioning of hydraulic or pneumatic cylinders; they are the weakest link and subjected to attacks of a varied nature. Selection of the appropriate seal is determined with regard to imper¬viousness, media compatability and temperature resistance, friction, wear resistance, stroke frequency as well as service life. For this reason, great care should be taken when determining the metal slide face, the metal gap on the side opposite the pressure, the groove, the piston and rod guide as well as the wiper. To ensure trouble-free operation, the measurements given for the size and type of seal, angle and curves should be adhered to.

Rounded corners in the groove bed (1) ensure that the O-ring lies correctly and rounded flanks of the groove’s edges (2) minimize the risk of the seal moving into the metal gap. Suitable surface finishes of the groove bed (3) as well as the groove flanks (4), adherance to the tolerances for the groove width (5), the lead-in chamfers (6) and the size of the seal gap (7), as well as the surface finish of the opposed surface (8), all have a decisive influence on the service life of the seal.

Provision must also always be made for sufficient guiding of the piston and rod. The fit of the guiding rings also has a decisive influence on the functional safety of seals. They should, therefore, be placed close to the guide ring.

Wipers prevent any foreign particles, which could destroy the seals, from getting into the medium system of a hydraulic cylinder. Additionally, when using double wipers, the oil film left by the seal is retained and led back into the closed system when the rod descends again. To keep the plant clean and protect the environment against oil pollution, no hydraulic cylinder should be used without a wiper or, better still, a double wiper.
