About Hyde Park Main Streets
Hyde Park Main Streets is a 501c3 nonprofit organization, and is one of 20
different Main Street programs in the City of Boston. Founded in 1995,
HPMS is run by a volunteer Board of Directors, and with Boston Main
Streets, is part of the largest Urban Main Street program in the country.
As part of a National Main Streets model, HPMS operates under four basic
principles which serve are our committees — economic restructuring,
promotion, design, and organization.
Hyde Park Main Streets strives to make Hyde Park a better place to live,
work, dine, and shop. HPMS works with new and established businesses
on design assistance, technical support, and better business practices such
as energy efficiency and sustainable operations. The organization also
supports the business district on a macro level, promoting Hyde Park to
the broader Boston community as an appealing and dynamic destination.

Emily Patrick, Executive Director
Emily joined Hyde Park Main
Streets in the summer of 2013,
and brought with her over six
years of non-profit business
and fundraising experience.
Emily works to plan communi-
ty events and programming, as
well as provide individualized
assistance plans to small busi-
ness owners. Under her direc-
tion, HPMS has seen the crea-
tion of the Hyde Park Banner
Project, increase in corporate
sponsors, and the launch of the
annual Trolley Tour. Emily
has also been a key contributor to the Main Street Coalition, a collaborative
of the 20 independent Main Street organizations within the City of Boston.
Emily resides in nearby West Roxbury.
Thien Simpson, Program Coordinator
Thien Simpson has worked with Hyde Park
Main Streets for nearly a decade. In her time
with the organization, Thien has established
a multitude of close relationships with busi-
nesses and residents of the community.
Thien works to recognize individual and cor-
porate gifts to the organization, as well as
design and create the bi-weekly e-newsletters
that are sent to over 2,000 members of the
greater Hyde Park community. Thien is also
an avid community volunteer, having sup-
ported the Hyde Park Arts Association, Ethos, Dance Academy, Boston
Trinity Academy, and others. Thien is a resident of Hyde Park, and lives
with her husband and two children.
2015 Overview
Hyde Park Main Streets has accomplished a lot in the past year as we cele-
brated our 20th anniversary and reached new milestones in fundraising.
Training Workshops and Networking Breakfasts
HPMS provided bi-monthly training and networking workshops for small
business owners throughout the year. Consultants were invited to speak on
topics that can help improve business practices. These trainings were com-
pletely free to attendees, and provided a great opportunity for managers to
network which each other and cross-collaborate. Topics included credit
management, customer loyalty programming, quickbooks, legal assistance,
and one-on-one small business assistance. We consider it an important part
of our mission to provide this type of free assistance to businesses in the
community.
20th Anniversary Celebration
2015 marked the 20th year of Hyde Park Main Streets. We celebrated at
Hyde Park’s Public Library and invited all current and former board mem-
bers, volunteers, and executive direc-
tors to a gathering. The event high-
lighted the many accomplishments
over the past 20 years, as well as the
hundreds of volunteer hours that have
been donated to our organization and
community by the tremendous individ-
uals who have served it.
Technical Assistance
HPMS partnered with many small businesses in the community in 2015 to
help them improve and grow. Our assistance ranged from marketing and
social media to new signage and storefront restoration, interior layout alter-
nations, and pricing analysis. Some of the businesses we assisted this year
includes Dress With Confidence, Salamanders Café, The Private Office
Barbershop, Tiffany’s Transformations, Adaptab, Rincon Caribeno, Baca-
ro, Maria’s Salon, Intriguing Hair, and Z&R Convenience Plus.
Fairmount Arts Collaborative
HPMS partnered with
Riverside Theatre Works
at the Roosevelt K-8
School to create the Fair-
mount Arts Collabora-
tive, a year of arts pro-
gramming in Hyde Park
that was awarded
$25,000 in funding from
The Boston Foundation.
The collaboration al-
lowed us to bring paint nights and art shows to local businesses, theatre clas-
ses and performances to students, and an overall emphasis on arts program-
ming in our neighborhood. The grant also contributed to the Jazz Festival and
the Anderson Tree Lighting, two Hyde Park signature events that were assist-
ed through this program.
Holiday Ornament
Every year for the past eight years, Hyde Park
Main Streets creates a holiday keepsake ornament
to commemorate a landmark of the community. In
the past it has been the George Wright Golf
Course, the Martini Hatch Shell, or French’s
Opera House. This year, we chose to highlight
Mayor Thomas M. Menino, a native of Hyde Park,
who served as the Mayor of Boston for over twen-
ty years, and who passed away in 2014.
Havana Nights
Our annual fundraiser in 2015 was our highest grossing fundraiser in our his-
tory, grossing over $29,000. We held the event in CF Technologies, a ware-
house space in Westinghouse Plaza. Over 200 people were in attendance, and
the evening included salsa dance instruction, live and silent auction, cigar bar,
vintage car displays, catered food from Rincon Caribeno, and signature mo-
jito cocktails. Thanks to everyone who assisted in making the evening so
memorable!
2015 Committee Overview
Design Committee
2015 was a big year for the De-
sign Committee. We had the
Hyde Park Mural commissioned
on the wall of the Vertullo Build-
ing on Fairmount Avenue. The
mural (photo on the last page)
features eight landmarks of the
Hyde Park community, and is a
great visual welcome to those to
drive over the Fairmount Avenue
bridge. We also partnered with the Roosevelt K-8 School on an anti-littering
campaign. After receiving feedback from a resident about trash being an
issue in their neighborhood, HPMS asked students to design artwork encour-
aging people in the community to pick up their trash. The winning piece is
featured prominently on a billboard in Cleary Square above Ron’s Ice
Cream.
Economic Restructuring Committee
The ER Committee also achieved a lot this past year. We worked with a
consultant, Peg Barringer from FinePoint Associates, on creating some mar-
keting pieces for our organization to use when recruiting new businesses to
Hyde Park. The two formal pieces include market data and spending power
of the neighborhood, plus the many features that make Hyde Park an attrac-
tive place to start a business.
We also created an event called Hyde Park Delivers that provided delivery
service for area restaurants on a specific day of the year. Restaurants in the
area that don’t have delivery service loose
a lot of potential business. HPMS worked
with local food establishments to deliver
take-out orders to people’s home. At the
end of the evening, over $400 had been
grossed by area restaurants that otherwise
would not have had the customers, and any
gratuity was donated to Hyde Park Main
Streets.
Promotions Committee
The Hyde Park Main Streets Promotions committee did a lot of the leg work
surrounding our vari-
ous events throughout
the year. In addition
to that, they created a
new initiative of wel-
coming kits to new
home owners in Hyde
Park. Semi-annually
the committee reviews
the list of homes sold in the area, and delivers welcome bags to the residents
featuring shopping guides, contact numbers of City and State officials, maps
of the local parks, and coupons for shopping in the district.
During the holiday season, the committee also arranged for a Hyde Park
Shopping Day, where a group of holiday shoppers visited retail shops in the
district and supported local businesses. Dozens of purchases were made,
and everyone had a fantastic day.
Organization Committee
Hyde Park Main Streets also continued its traditional events, including holi-
day wreath distribution to every business in the commercial district, and the
7th annual
Hyde Park
Jazz Festival
which took
place at the
Martini Shell
on Truman
Parkway.
We also host-
ed our sec-
ond annual Hyde Park Trolley Tour, where attendees boarded charted trol-
leys that stopped at various eateries throughout the district. It was a great
way to get people in the door of businesses they hadn’t visited before, as
well as raise some money for Main Streets programming. We’re always
excited to showcase the different ethnic cuisines and flavor profiles of the
restaurants that our neighborhood has to offer.

Coming in 2016
Wayfinding Signage
Hyde Park Main Streets will be installing Wayfinding Signage through-
out our commercial district in 2016. We’re hoping that the bright visual
will be helpful to residents and visitors alike in their search for parking
lots, Commuter Rail Stations, and neighborhood landmarks. We antici-
pate 20 new signs to be installed sometime in 2016.
Jazz Festival
We hope to promote a summer of music in Hyde Park at our local out-
door performance space, the Martini Hatch Shell on Truman Parkway.
This will be the 7th annual Hyde Park Jazz Festival, and we hope to
take the event to a next level this year. We will be branding it as an
event along the Fairmount Line, and we will offer shuttle service
from the commuter rail station to the Hatch Shell. We also hope to
expand the number of performers to include a full afternoon and
evening of music, so that families can enjoy a day of free Hyde Park
musical entertainment. Keep your eyes and ears out for a date this
summer.
Strategic Plan
Hyde Park Main Streets also plans to undergo a strategic planning
process so we can be sure that our long-term goals are in-line with
our mission.
Business Recruitment
Hyde Park Main Streets will be actively working to recruit new busi-
nesses to Hyde Park’s commercial district. Part of that endeavor means
having a firm understanding of our own marketplace and how we com-
pare to other shopping centers. Below are some results of a study we
conducted this past year about the foot traffic in our Primary Trade Ar-
ea (those that live in a 1 mile radius from our commercial district) and
our Secondary Trade Area (those that live within a 2 mile radius from
our commercial district).
These types of results will help inform brokers and perspective busi-
ness owners about the benefits of opening a store in our shopping dis-
trict, and how walkable our neighborhood is compared to other areas,
like Dedham’s Legacy Place and Westwood’s University Avenue.
Future Development
Hyde Park Main Streets will also be working closely will private devel-
opers and the City of Boston on new development projects that come
up in our commercial area, especially the one planned adjacent to the
Fairmount Line on Nott Street, and the one currently under construc-
tion at 15 Dana Avenue adjacent to the Hyde Park Commuter Rail
Line.
