The Barefoot Babe is a very safe and stable yacht. With it’s wide beam, heavy displacement, and high freeboard the ride is confortable in most all seas. There is plenty of room on the aft deck, cabin top, and cabin top to walk, sit or lounge around.

Publishers note:

April already!?! How did this happen…. Life at Hy has been full of many late nights of hard work and continuous research. We had our first official fashion show, March 5th, and it went very well thanks to all those involved. The fashion show featured all of the designers we previously showcased in the magazine as well as an additional guest designer; Tony Rio. The event was a tremendous success! It was exciting to see what I’ve envisioned come to life before my eyes.

This months designer is Jeremy Phillips, with his line Cross, and guest designer Natalie Harris.

Throughout my life I used to think that when you have passion and work hard you will reap the rewards instantly (by instantly I mean within a few years) Although, recently I have found that perusing passion is something that pays off throughout the course of a lifetime.

That being said Hy is still in baby phase of that lifetime, its coming on a year now from the first ever issue of Hy!

I hope that all our readers enjoy this issue and all it has to offer for the Houston Youth, our aim is to continue to improve so all of your comments an suggestions constantly help. Thank you to all our readers who have followed Hy, and who supported the designers by attending our fashion show. With all the hype the show brought, we will be sure to do another event soon... Until then, enjoy the issue and everything Hy has to offer!

Is an 82in 3D DLP considered excessive?

What kind of clock is this thing?!

For those of you who didn’t know, yes there were tablets before the all new ipad. But in this batch they’re all new, exept for the Archos 9 which has been out for a little while now. Ok so lets begin with flash support, they all support it except for the iphone OS based ipad. Ouch! no flash support for the ipad? That’s not a good start. -1 Now for Multitasking and running multiple programs. They all do except for the ipad and Joo Joo. -2 for ipad and -1 for Joo Joo. Storage: ranges from 16 to 64 Gb except for the... 4Gb Joo Joo? Instant Fail, we need more storage than that. Wi-

First of all let’s categorize the important things. If you have the mindset of a fashionista or fashionisto of style and bargaining, you would know better than most that it’s hard to simply let things go of certain pieces( even if they are out of season) or try and buy new pieces for a well orchestrated wardrobe. But again , I have stated that you have got to feel comfortable in whatever it is you buy , sell, get rid of. Looking in your closet for what you think you may want to keep, get rid of or what you may think you need is a daunting task. Wow, just thinking about is overwhelming for me! This is what you can do. You’ve got to create a system or inventory of things you have to keep, what you should get rid of and things you possibly want to purchase and add to your wardrobe. For me, what works best when making the choices, I just totally empty my closet in the living room floor and start separating in piles! (I find doing it every other month keeps the cluster down!) Maybe you have a less drastic measure to clean your closet; its whatever works for you! How to separate the clothes you ask. Well, I personally use the pile system ( which is as follows): Pile 1: Keeps- whatever garments you can’t live without or just are perfect for the appropriate season. Pile 2: Let goes- anything you’ve outgrown , gotten over or really just don’t need anymore; just get it out of your closet space! And Pile 3: recyclables and sell pieces- Whatever else can be reused or sold. ( Old and loose garments can be strap pieces for newly made garments; hints for all the designers, etc.) I will also let you in on places that are perfect for selling your clothes that you don’t need, for a little extra cash! Or if your the charitable type, you can simply drop off your unwanted clothes to the nearest donation centers , locations throughout most of Greater Houston. What are the desirable styles, trends and pieces ideal for Spring/ Summer season 2010? Here is a list of the top trends and styles I have seen demand the Spring/Summer 2010 season; from the catwalks to sidewalks of Fashion-forward metropolitans: ( These are pieces and accessories that are recommended to be kept (if you already own) or purchased for your wardrobe.)

Tops & Outerwear : Soft neutrals blousesRacer-back tank topsBold floral blouses Polo tee shirtsNautical striped tee shirts/tanksUtility shirtsMilitary trench jacketsMilitary/ razor -tailored blazers

Bottoms & Pants:Short pleated burmuda shortsCut denim jeans/ boyfriend cut jeansDestroyed , reconstructed denim jeansWide-legged linen trousersCargo/utility pants( big this season!)Structured military inspired trousers

Dresses & skirts:Asymmetrical mini-dressesTribal printed- inspired sheathes and A-line cut dresses( big this season!)Cut-out body con dressesShort skirtsGathered tulip cut skirtsLeather skirts/mini-dressesRaw edged denim short skirtsOne-sie dresses/ rompers & feminine structured jump-suitsUltra feminine frocks

Accessories/ Shoes & Jewelry:Wooden, medal or glass bangles and baubles/ tribal costume beadsBraided leather, straw or miscellaneous material hobo/ satchel bagTechno-colored leather bags

Primal printed hobo bagsTribal beaded hobo/ saddle bagsNautical inspired carry -allsBraided leather wedges/plat formed pumps Structural plat formed pumpsGladiator sandals( big this season!)Designer clogsMilitary zapados bootsBraided micro- leather belts

Now that you have a feel what is big for the Spring/ Summer 2010 season, we can see

what pieces and accessories that should or should no longer apply to your wardrobe this season.

For other trends and styles that I have not mentioned, doesn’t necessarily mean their worth getting rid of. These are just pieces that

are not in season and don’t need to take up any more valuable space on your closet. ( The decisions are yours of how you want to deal with the extra clothes and accessories in your closet. Word to the wise; If there is any money to be made for pieces you‘re not into anymore, that are in good condition- sell them by all means-We all could use more money!? )

Once you have made your piles, or followed whatever system you find most effective, One can now decide on how to mix & match, group or layer pieces to make the perfect outfits and statements for Spring. Now that you have a clear closet space, you can now organize the closet in a manner that gives you direct access to certain pieces and space for newer pieces. For all other garments as I stated earlier, that you no longer need, have outgrown or just gotten over, You can either get rid of them or try and sell them. ( If you don’t want to go through trying to sell clothes or specific pieces, my suggestion would be to simply donate these clothes; Someone less fortunate would greatly benefit from them!) I have been a retail/ fashion assistant and personal shopper over the years and here a few tips I have given to clients that are helpful when their preparing to sell clothes:

Make sure the clothes are cleaned and are in a wearable condition( good in both

structural and hygienic condition. Used undergarments and swim suits will

most likely never sell.)Any tags that are attached to clothes,

either keep them on or cut them off from the stem; never them rip off, It can leave holes!( that

takes away from their value.)For designer bags, shoes and accessories that do not have their original casings, place them in a

plastic shoe boxes or plastic zip-lock bags( It keeps the condition up longer.)

For your more expensive or designer pieces that you want to possibly sell, but aren‘t

sure of esthetic value , make sure you have a good understanding of how much you are willing to let them go for or any other possibilities you have of getting the best deal or their sells. ( You can even have pieces appraised for their value I.e. Louis Vuitton

always want to appraise authentic original pieces in hopes of purchasing them back form you!) I would

look online of gilding/ consignment shops that specialize in appraisal and purchasing of designer garments and pieces( E-bay doesn’t hut either!)For recycling unwanted pieces , you can either store in at back of your closet or find trendy ways to add tem to a specific outfit or make them

again desirable!( I.e an old denim jacket could make the perfect transition to a trendy cropped/

reconstructed vest, that will last a few than one consecutive season! The same goes for denim jeans!)

Well the task of cleaning your closet wasn’t all that bad, was it? It can be fun to find pieces you never thought you would wear again or thought you had lost ( Happens to me all the time!)Making room for the new is always an exciting feeling. Knowing what is needed and how to discard or store the rest puts you at ease. Like I said the Spring/ Summer 2010 season is a promising one with so many exciting styles , colours and trends to choose from; you’re going to need all the extra room in your closet as

possible!

*April and March transcends into the Summer moths- that means swim suits galore! Catch the

next issue of Adrian’s Advice on how to find the ideal swimsuit for your body type! Adrian- Fashion Director Hy Magazine- I’m out!

Well it‘s March and the Spring/ Summer seasons are in full effect and its that time for that tedious task. You know what it is!? It even has it in the name; you guessed it-‘Spring Cleaning’! But this doesn’t have to be a daunting task at all! Spring/Summer 2010 is a promising season for creating a lasting wardrobe. But first you have to get rid of a few things . Your closet is looking a little cramped. What do you get rid of? What all do you keep and purchase? Can anything be recycled or sold from the previous seasons? I’m here to give you hints on what to keep, what great pieces to purchase and what to get rid of or possibly recycle for the Spring and Summer seasons.

POWER!OF HOUSTON

POLITICAL POWER

“I love that power” Interview with Mayor Annise Parker

“I met Houstonians from all works of life, Fathers worried about finding a job. I met mothers worried about crime. I met young men and women con-cerned about the chance for a good education. I met families worried about tax’s, homeowners worried about changes in their neighborhoods wanting to protect the neighborhoods they love. Hear me…… the city is on your side!”On December 12, 2009, Parker made history when she was elected mayor of America’s fourth largest city. When she assumed office on January 2, 2010, Houston became the largest U.S. city to ever have an openly gay individual serve as mayor. After the election, Parker declared that the top priorities of her administration will be improving transportation, balancing the city’s budget, and selecting a new police chief. Hy wanted to hear what newly elected Mayor Parker had to say about the youth of Houston.

Hy: Why do you think you won the election?

AP: Because I was the best-qualified candidate for the position and I will make a difference.

Hy: As the newly elected mayor, How will you improve everyday life for young Houstonians in this tough economy?

AP: Texas has always been a place where we value independence. Houstons everyday life, will be improved greatly as I begin my work as mayor. I believe that when we look at the daily problems our city faces we will begin to help all ages of Houstonians.

Hy: What will you do to increase jobs in Houston so that college graduates don’t have trouble finding work?

AP: What do you see as the biggest challenge facing this generation of Hous-tonians?Everyone is concerned about jobs more then anything else, we are one of Americas largest cities, we are incredible diverse and we influence a large area of people.

Hy: So far, Houston, just like everyone else has suffered due to the ECONMY. What do you believe Houston needs to do to make sure we get hit as hard as Ny and some of the other Major city and states?

AP: We never experienced a housing bubble in Texas, at least not like many of the other states did. I believe this has helped us in maintaining our stabil-ity through these tough times, and will continue to help us a a city and a state.

Hy: Who do you want to win the election for Governor of Texas and why?

AP: I can say that I believe it is time for a change in Texas, Im ready to make the change happen in Houston, now Texans need to be ready for the change to happen state wide.

Hy: Do you see yourself expanding your horizons in politics, taking your political power even further?

AP: I believe the Mayor carries allot of power, and I love that power. I would have to say that I don’t know about going further in politics, anything is possible. I know that I have a job to do as Mayor an I will be concentrating on that for the current moment, I will put all of my time an effort into what I have before, the job of Mayor of Houston!

HY: What was the Pre- college version of Matress Mac? JM: I grew up in Dallas went to high school there. my ambition all throughout my high school career was to be a college football player and I was a University of North Texas. I did play at the University of North Texas, 1969 and 1970. I must admit I was a great football player at University of Texas but I only had two problems. number one I was to small number two I was to slow and position I played was called the bench.. Figured I would never make it there finished my last year at University of North Texas, took a couple of business classes. I always wanted to be an entrepreneur when I grew up because my father always was and still is. HY: What is that Key? JM: You have to have persistence mental tenacity to never give up. HY: How did you start Gallery Furniture? JM: 1981 came to Houston. Started 5k two employees my wife an myself 20hrs a day 7days a week. good location and made a profit from day one necessity was certainly the mother convention.

HY: Advertising is a great part of your business why? JM: Advertising an marketing is every ones job, if your not out there marketing and advertising your product who will? We see it as an investment an not as an expense.I have done over 6thousand radio and television in my career, I can spit them out! HY: You say your father was an entrepreneur, what kind of business was he involved in? JM: My dad works with me now, hes out there with me at 80years old great for him, great for me. He was in the insurance business very successful and wasn’t successful at times. He gave me great inspiration to be an entrepreneur, to follow my own dreams and never give up and i think that’s key for any entrepreneur. HY: What advise would you give to someone who wants to start a company? JM: Find something you really enjoy, If your in it for the money it wont work. Everyone has to be on the team, you have to surround yourself with supportive people. You have to be able to “burn the bridges and stay there to fight.”

BUSINESS POWERRELIGIOUS POWER

Joel Osteen

Jim “Mattress Mack” McIngvale is a Houston icon. He also is the founder and owner of Gallery Furniture, one of the largest retail stores in America, a single location with average sales of $150 million a year! Mack joins HY to talk about his career playing “bench” at the University of Texas, selling furniture in Dallas and how he started Gallery Furniture with $5000 and 2 employees.

Jim McIngvale

“God has created you to be a victor, not a victim. Jumpstart your day by celebrating the very best that God has for you! These daily inspirations will help you grow in your relationship with the Lord and equip you to be everything God intends you to be.”Even Religious figures use modern day technology to transport their messages; the quote above was taken from joelosteen.com under his daily inspirational message, it is surprising to see that an individual can sign up for daily inspirational messages emailed to you every morning. Pastor Osteen is considered a modern day religious figure with a message that reaches an astronomical amount of viewers (and donations). Every Sunday Pastor Osteen stands in-front of thousands of viewers to preach at Lakewood Chruch. Today, Lakewood Church services, led by Pastor Joel Osteen, are seen in over 100 nations around the world. Joel Osteen’s first book, Your Best Life Now: 7 Steps to Living at Your Full Potential, was released in October 2004. In December 2006, he was named one of the year’s “Ten Most Fascinating People” by Barbara Walters.

Hy: Many other prominent religious figures in society say that the bible say if how we will go to hell and how we can go to heaven, you don’t believe in this, why?

JO: I can’t judge somebody’s heart; only god can look at somebody’s hart. I believe in my way. I’m going to let god be the judge of that, I’m going to let god be the judge of who goes to heave and hell.

How does it feel to be one of the most influential religious figures in the world?

JO: I believe that God has put seeds of greatness inside each person!

Hy: How do you a make it through the daily struggles?

JO: You can’t accomplish anything if your down an defeated. You have to bring your family together its not about the materialism, its what gods given us, our families and relationships. Materialism is not going to keep you happy and when you lose it you are going to have to look up an say… “well I have my heath, I have my family, something else”

Hy: We are in a tough economic time, what do you think we need?

JO: Hope

Hy: Why do we need hope?

JO: People are hungry for hope these days, its our time in our nation that we need hope more then ever. Faith will give you the strength to make it through, faith is going to help you to get up each day an say “you know what I lost my job, my plant closed but I’m going to press forward and look for a new opportunity” I believe when we do what we can, then god will do what we cant. But we cant sit back with a victim mentality an say “oh man life is a bummer” that just draws more negativity, we have to get up each day and say…. “WE GOING TO MAKE IT THROUGH!”

Glass recycling is both simple and beneficial. Let’s start with the ben-efits of glass recycling:

Glass recycling is good for the environment A glass bottle that is sent to a landfill can take up to a million years to break down. By contrast, it takes as little as 30 days for a recycled glass bottle to leave your kitchen recycling bin and appear on a store shelf as a new glass container.

Glass recycling is sustainable.Glass containers are 100-percent recyclable, which means they can be recycled repeatedly, again and again, with no loss of purity or quality in the glass.

Glass recycling is efficientRecovered glass from glass recycling is the primary ingredient in all new glass containers. A typical glass container is made of as much as 70 percent recycled glass. According to industry estimates, 80 percent of all recycled glass eventually ends up as new glass containers.

Glass recycling conserves natural resourcesEvery ton of glass that is recycled saves more than a ton of the raw materials needed to create new glass, including: 1,300

pounds of sand; 410 pounds of soda ash; and 380 pounds of limestone.

Glass recycling saves energyMaking new glass means heating sand and other substances to a temperature of 2,600 degrees Fahren-heit, which requires a lot of energy and creates a lot of industrial pollution. One of the first steps in glass recycling is to crush the glass and create a product called “cullet.” Making recycled glass products from cullet consumes 40 percent less energy than making new glass from raw materials, because cullet melts at a much lower temperature.

Recycled glass is usefulBecause glass is made from natural materials such as sand and limestone, it glass containers have a low rate of chemical interaction with their contents. As a result, glass can be safely reused. Besides serving as the pri-mary ingredient in new glass containers, recycled glass also has many other commercial uses—from creating decorative tiles and landscaping material to rebuilding eroded beaches.

Glass recycling is also simpleas I pointed out at the beginning of this article. It’s simple because glass is one of the easiest materials to

recycle. For one thing, glass is accepted by almost all curbside recycling programs and municipal recycling centers. About all most people have to do to recycle glass bottles and jars is to carry their recycling bin to the curb, or maybe drop off their empty glass containers at a nearby collec-tion point. If you need an extra incentive to recycle glass, how about this: Several U.S. states offer cash refunds for most glass bottles, so in some areas glass recycling can actu-ally put a little extra money in your pocket.

With the scent of spring in the air and the sense of bigger and better things to arrive, Spring heralds a time of awakening and new things to come. Spring means the end of the long, cold winter and the start of a new season of love, laughter and the great out-doors. However, like most good things, Spring has a price tag. It carries with it a cost that many of us are loath to pay and would much rather prefer winter stay a little longer. The price? Daylight Savings Time. That’s right, that pesky change of the clock one hour forward to add more hour of daylight to our already hectic days. It signifies the loss of sleep, the longer

workday (or so we perceive) and the knowledge that every business out there has 60 more minutes to operate and coax us out of our hard earned dollars. The energy and electricity companies can recline on their earnings of the winter and look forward to the earnings of the Spring and Summer with increased appliance usage. (Or can they?) After all, DST was created with the hope that the loss of an hour of light during winter and the gain of one during the day would decrease power consumption and save some money. People just don’t like the hassle of changing the time every 7 months. So, what are the facts about

Congress enacted the first Daylight Savings Time law in 1918

DST occurs at a uniform 1:59 a.m. to 1:00 a.m. in the winter and to 3:00 a.m. in the Spring, across the U.S. to minimize any states from enacting their own DST schedule.

Getting people to agree and accept DST was more difficult than it appeared to be. Most people loathed the disruption.

DST saves about .5% or 1% of total power consump-tion.

Not everyone benefits from DST, farmers and anyone else who goes to work in the dark early-morning hours gain nothing.

The U.S. was not the first country to embrace DST. Ger-many and Austria took the lead in 1916.

DST was not always uniform and enacted by the federal government. In fact, the law was repealed in 1919 and any state that chose to follow DST could at their own discre-tion and choice of time.

DST was not the first uniform standard of time imposed upon people, Standardized time was.

DST DOESN’T save as much power consumption as origi-nally thought.

DST wasn’t created with the people in mind, it was created to establish a standardized timing for the transportation sector and the publishing of their schedules.

The American Heist‘and not the kind that brought down the economy‘

By: Mike Damante

Strip away all the glitz and glamour and rock’n’ roll isn’t always spacious tour buses and radio relevancy. Countless bands strive for the success, adoration and all the rewards that come with “making it”.” In today’s industry, bands are signed off how many Myspace friends they have, replacing work ethic and talent for hair styles and fashion trends.

Enter Houston’s The American Heist; a band who prefers to do things the old-fashioned way. Formed in 2008 under its old moniker, Born Anchor, the punk-soul quartet has quickly established The American Heist as a working-class band and has opened for touring acts such as Street Dogs, Fake Problems and even hosted a show headlined by Dead To Me at guitarist/ lead singer Tim Blackout’s own house. The American Heist has played shows as diverse as the popular nightclub, Rocbar, and kicked off the Houston Roller Derby’s 2010 season opener.

Blackout, a veteran musician of the local music scene, started the band with bassist/ harmonica player Evan Camp after feeling a need to return to playing music again. The decision was made after one night of driving around listening to the punk music they both grew up on. The no frills approach to starting a band was nothing glamorous and they had little direction on where to start. Like most bands, whether it is a young high school band or a coffee house indie act, The American Heist started playing songs in a bedroom.

The band’s first show was at the then new Houston House of Blues, a battle of the bands contest that the band was triumphant in securing the night’s grand prize – the coveted opening slot to play with rockabilly legend, Reverend Horton Heat.

“That was pretty incredible,” said drummer Carl Chambless said. “We ended up with a 15 minute set and when they announced the finalists we had no expectations to win. We played three songs that we’ve only been practicing for two months. I think winning that contest got the ball rolling really well for us last year.”

While beating out a variety of local acts to win the contest was a victory in itself, the chance to open for Reverend Horton Heat was just as sweet.

“It was way cool, kind of surreal at points to get a call saying that we are opening for Reverend,” said Blackout.

The local punk-rock scene has evolved from the days of 30 Foot Fall rocking Fitzgeralds and FenixTX relocating to San Diego for a brief stint as MTV’s pop-punk flavor-of-the-month. While you can find a slew of Rancid rip-off bands throughout any state, Houston’s new school of acts have taken a page from the East Bay sounds of California and added an East Coast mentality sprinkled with hints of Bruce Springsteen. Jean jackets with American flag patches have become just as common at punk clubs as leather jackets with studs on them.

“We are starting to miss and become nostalgic for things Americana”, said rhythm guitarist LJ Sanford. “I

think artists like Springsteen, John Cougar Mellencamp, Jackson Browne are as popular now as they ever been because of a longing for a lost America or adolescence. “

All four members have blue-collar day jobs, and use that money to fund the band’s EPs and upcoming debut album.

“You get the weekend warriors who want to be crust punks on the weekends, but this is who we are,” said Chambless. “We all work 40 hours a week, and it is tiring. With me and Tim getting married last year it is now balancing a fulltime job, a band and a marriage. It does take its toll, but we have extremely understanding wives that let us stay out until three in the morning.”

With the hard work all four put in towards their everyday routines, they use that mentality for the band’s live show and towards a yeoman’s effort in putting out a debut album. The American Heist just completed mixing and recording its first official full length that the band plans to release independently this summer.

“We all work 50-60 hours a week, and then put in 12 hour days in the studio. It is way rewarding to see how much we’ve progressed as a band from a year ago,” said Blackout.

Not bad for a band full of everyday joes.

PATRICK MEDRANO

If I had anything to say about myself and my art, I guess it would be this. There are four happenings in my lifetime that are thought about most often. The further I get away from these memories it becomes more apparent why I hold them so dear. #1 : At whatever age it happened, I spent a lot of time with my grandmother. She would take me to the local grocery store to ask for cardboard boxes and butcher paper. She would always have a ton of tape and mark-ers in the activity closet. So…I would spend hours and if the weather provided, sometimes days building space ships and strange houses in the huge backyard. I remember by the end of the day the yard would be covered by odd structures made of cardboard and tape. I don’t remember much else accept that they were huge and well taped together. I think about that sometimes when I am building something bigger than myself and it is always comfortably familiar. #2 : I grew up across the street from a catholic church called Our Lady of Victory. I have a lot of memories going into that church when no one was there and praying. While I would pray my eyes would often wonder admiring the sculptures of Jesus on the cross and his mother Mary. In Our Lady of Victory, all the art was profound. The wood pews had beautiful dark grains and the organ pipes were massive. The stained glass murals were dark red and detailed. As the years went on, I would go there like a second home and had fallen in love with being surrounded by meaningful art. I admire how the dead

silence gave way to the constant flow of clear thoughts and prayer. #3 : My grandmother was a art and activities director in a retirement home called Manor West for as long as I have known her. As I got

older I would go to work with her…you know, playing games and painting with the old folks. I remember being surrounded by elderly people desperately seeking an open ear. I recall a lot of those stories made me secretly cry. Hundreds of stories about life in a different time, all about people of different race, minds and backgrounds, all of them first hand. I went there long enough to see my favorites pass on and until I was old enough to be sad-dened by the true meaning of retirement home. #4 : A few years after that happening happened, my favorite happening….happened. I used to go on top of the roof of my room whenever I was in bad spirits. I remember one

particular time I had gone out and I was furious about a conversa-tion I had with my father and I instinctively began to pray. So with all the conviction of an innocent child I told God if I wasn’t put on this earth to do say or create something meaningful or at least moving….then I had no business being on it. As I began to lay down on top of the roof I looked up at the giant dark sky and every cloud is what’s now planted in my memory as a perfect image of random souls. One after another, each different from the next. Each extremely apparent. I remember it being too much and running back inside. Now… rather you believe that God was personally answering my demanding ques-tion or that I was simply seeing things in the clouds, either way….I was respectful that my mind was creative enough to make out those faces.

KATY ANDERSON

My mother raised her children in Lovelady, Tx which is two hours Northeast of Houston. We lived in a two story house built soon after I was born upon the same land that my mother was raised. There were few neighbors and none of them had children to play with so I spent lots of time hanging out with my Granny Nell who also lived with us. She taught me the basics of tap dancing and enjoyed entrancing me with embellished stories of her childhood. The rest of my time was spent alongside my mother. She is a hob-byist and crafting connoisseur with talents that have proven to be limitless. There were always projects going. Painting and sewing, ceramics and baking…the boredom of a crawling hot summer in the sticks was escaped by getting lost in projects that spanned weeks and months. It was at a very early age that my mother introduced me to a photography as a result of a devastating fire which destroyed our home in 1984. We lost two generations pictures and family history. All the things my grandmother held onto throughout her life and all the things my mother had saved were now gone. From that point on my mother’s Minolta went with us everywhere.

I began creating my images in high school and went on to study Photography at Sam Houston State University and moved to Hous-ton in 1999. I worked at a photo lab for a year or so then started working as an assistant to a busy corporate photographer. I quickly discovered that environment was not the one for me and I moved on while trying to figure out what to do next. My answer soon found me in the form of a beautiful artist, sculptor and painter, Patrick Medrano...my life changed for ever.

Before our meeting in 2002, I had not considered myself an “artist”. My images were instead a unique moment in time captured so that

I would not have to rely on my memory alone to tell the story. The thought of selling them or even showing them to the public as art was something that terrified me. My life with Patrick changed that and I began to see that documenting the history of the world in which I live is not only a way to connect with it, but also a powerful way to create a voice for myself.

In 2008, Patrick and I embarked on our biggest col-laboration. We created The Fodice Foundation, a non-profit aimed at using ART to save HISTORY. Our mission is to restore a historic school building in East Texas that will then serve as a full scale arts facility by way of a year round artist residency program. I encour-age you to please visit www.fodicefoundation.org for more information or to find out how you may become involved.

ARTIST STATEMENT :

Writing a decent one is hard. The task at hand always brings to mind a famous Lewis Hine quote “If I could say it in words, I would not need to photograph.” Sometimes I have no idea why I photograph the things I do, there is an instinct that drives me to create photographs and I follow that where ever it leads me. What I can tell you is that of the photo-graphs I have created, my most cherished have been of children. I have studied and experimented with all photographic mediums and techniques and found that the primitive nature of Large format photography (4x5 Film) to be the most appealing and satisfying. Devoid of new technology, ignored by computerized takeover, it remains as it was over 100 years ago. That is a very comforting and beautiful thing to me.

‘’The Little things we leave behind’’ is the tittle of Katy Anderson’s and Patrick Medrano’s latest body of works . This exhibit features the individual as well as collaborative pieces of Anderson’s

photography and Medrano’s paintings/sculptors. In 2008 the couple used there art to save a historic African American school from being lost to neglect and environment. After creating The Fodice Foundation a arts residence programed within the

school , Katy and Patrick are even more infatuated with the birth and death of man made structures , especially the history of the people that built them. ‘’The little things we leave behind’’ is about the questions we all ask when we see homes, buildings and schools on the verge of losing there battle with mother nature - Who were the people , when was it built and how could they leave it behind?

Chef Mark Cox began his career in the food industry at 12 years old as the popcorn boy in his local park. He moved through part time jobs during high school and made it from popcorn boy to Senior Line Chef by the end of high school. In Mark’s words, he’s “been full-time kitchen since 1972” After being formally trained, he landed very prestigious chef positions.

Finally he decided to open Mark’s American Cusine. The building went through many different owners, names, and businesses before becoming Mark’s. The archetecture and the energy in the building is absolutly amazing. Having formally been a church, the arched ceiling, wood work, and loft dinning area are just stunning. The incredible décor makes eating at Mark’s all the more exciting. You can wait in the bar under the wine loft, in the main dinning room, or in the dinning loft looking out over the dinning room. If a romantic

date is what you are looking to take your date, Mark’s is the place to go. Never been to Mark’s, and feeling a little warry about fancy food?? Not to worry, Mark’s creative delicious dishes all have ingrediants you can recognize and the food literally melts in your mouth it is so good. All of Mark’s dishes are made fresh and menus are put toghether based on what items are freshist and avalible. With dishes such as Lobster and Quail, Costal Crab, French Toast and Pork, you just simply cant go wrong. Everything Mark puts together is absolulty devine and will not disappoint you.

My favorite part of the meal, not unlike most girls, is the dessert. Mark’s pastery chefs are just as creative as he is when it comes to their desserts. With delicious creations such as caramel mouse with banana and rasbery, passion fruit tarts, and cherry crustata, you wont even know what hit your mouth. The tart fruity flavors mixed with the sweet coconuts and burbon sauces, its like a taste explosion in your mouth.

1. Yes, summer just around the corner, and in Texas we are already putting on those swim suits. So whether you are within reach of your bikini body, or would like to gather your ammo and fine tune for next year, here are some safe, all-natural diet tips, taken from the new book The Bikini Diet by Maggie Greenwood-Robin-son, PH. D.

2. “The Bikini Diet” Tips

3. Don’t drink fruit juices or juice-based products while “dieting”. Get your nutrition from calories you chew rather then swallow.

4. Shoot for 25 to 35 gm of fiber per day.5. If you get hungry, eat a few ounces of protein to tide you over until your next meal.6. Eat at least two servings of fish per week to get healthy fats.7. Spice up your food with red pepper, which boosts metabolism.8. Drizzle sugar-free syrup over cooked carrots for a sweet treat.9. Drink green tea liberally - it helps burn fat.10. Try no to let yourself get bored, stressed out or depressed, if possible. Try yoga, meditation, and herbs such

as kava and ginseng for stress. Regular exercise, journaling and supplements such as fish, St. Johns wort and 5-HTP can help alleviate depression.

11. Outwait your food cravings. They generally last no longer then 10 minutes.12. Distract yourself with a nonfood related activity, such as exercising, reading, pursuing a favorite hobby, lis-

tening to music, writing letters, surfing the internet (like you are now) or soaking in a hot bath.13. Make a list of 25 things to do rather then eat, and keep it handy for times when you feel tempted to eat

(when you shouldn’t).14. Freeze strawberries and other berries. They take longer to eat and provide a candy-like treat.

Financial Advice

You’ve charged it up -- now it’s pay-down time.If you’re up to your eyeballs in credit card and other debt, paying the minimums and little else, it’s time to get seri-ous. The best way to get rid of debt, experts agree, is to attack the balance with the highest annual percentage rate first. When that one is paid off, move onto the debt with the next-highest interest rate. But always attack that high-interest debt first. On that debt, you want to “double, triple, quadruple minimum pay-ments,” says Howard S. Dvorkin, president and founder of Consolidated Credit Counseling Services in Fort Lauder-dale, Fla. “When you’re done with that one, move on to the next one.”Linda Sherry, editorial director with Consumer Action, a consumer advocacy group in San Francisco, agrees: Size up bills by interest rates rather than the amount of the balance.“The amount you owe doesn’t really matter when you’re paying an enormous amount of interest,” Sherry said. “Try to pay the highest interest rate ones first. Muster all the funds available and get the debt out of your life.”An alternative plan -- littlest first What about knocking off some low-balance bills first and eliminating a bill or two from that thick monthly pile? Take the money that had been set aside to pay those bills and apply it to the balance with the highest interest rate. “Muster all the funds available and get the debt out of your life,” Rhode says. Stick to your plan The key to an effective pay-down plan is sticking with it. Don’t let up on the monthly payments as the credit cards’ minimum payments inch down and as bills get paid off.“Once you establish a payment plan with a credit card bill, stick with the payments until it’s gone and then roll it into another credit card and keep going,” says Christine Jones, a counselor with American Credit Counseling Service in Melbourne, Fla. Unfortunately, many people quit before they get started.“The problem I see is that people make mental promises to themselves that they can’t keep,” says the DCA’s Rhode. “They say they will pay $100 a month but it’s too big a stretch. They can’t do it and then they forget about it.”Think before you act To avoid falling into that trap, take a hard look at your finances and determine how much you can realistically af-

ford to pay each month. Rhode suggests that people track their spending every day for a month to get a firm handle on where their money is actually going.“People will save 20 percent just writing down where their money goes,” he says. “Because they will start cutting back.”After tracking their spending, people can better decide how much they can afford to pay toward credit card debt. Experts point out that just $50 more a month can make a big difference. If logging expenses for a month doesn’t turn up additional money try these tips for saving $50 a month from Con-sumer Credit Counseling Service:

· Brown bag 10 lunches per month.· Have movies and popcorn at home instead of

going out.· Use coupons for groceries and buy store brands.· Make pizza at home instead of ordering out.· Buy in bulk and freeze dinner entrees.· Give handmade cards and gifts.· Shop at consignment, thrift and discount stores.

Pay more than the minimum Once you start paying more than the minimum, the debts start to disappear. Paying just the $60 minimum payment on a $3,000 credit card balance would take eight years to pay off and cost a person a whopping $2,780 in interest. By paying an additional $50 a month, the debt would be paid off in three years and they would be spared $1,800 in interest charges. Use Bankrate.com’s credit card minimum payment calculator to see how increasing your payments will cut your time in debt.It is also important to keep in mind that debt is not always bad.“Having a certain amount of credit balance is not negative,” Consumer Action’s Sherry says. “Some debt is necessary to reach goals.”But most experts recommend that debt payments includ-ing car payments and credit cards eat up no more than 10 to 15 percent of income. More could spell trouble.“If you can only afford the minimum payments each month, you’re on the edge. If you have to hope and pray that your deposit gets to the bank to cover your checks. And especially if you’re using the cash advance on a credit card to pay other cards or for routine living expenses,” Rhode said. “They’re spending money they don’t have.”

QUIET as it’s kept, there’s plenty of scholarship money out there--approximately $64 billion in grants, fellowships and federal funding--just waiting for the few, the swift and the determined to stake their claims. In 1999, top Black high school students (July EBONY) received tens of thousands of dollars in scholarship aid, and you can do it too, if you follow these 10 hot tips.

[1.] Be positive. The No. 1 mistake many students make is believing they can’t afford college, say’s financial aid expert

“Parents and students shouldn’t take the position that there isn’t enough money out there and that they don’t qualify for scholarships,” Beckham says. “You can go to college and there is money for almost everybody--you’ve just got to find the right combination of your abilities, what the school offers and your financial needs.”[2.] Start early.Students should start looking for scholarships by the time they reach their sophomore year in high school, according to Dr. David L. Beckley, president of Rust College and chair of the UNCF presidents of member institutions.“By the sophomore year, parents and students ought to start looking for colleges and exploring the financial aid programs that the colleges have,” Dr. Beckley advises. “And they should begin writing these sources for scholarship and financial aid information.”Nearly half of all college students miss out on scholarship sources available in their own community, according to Marianne Ragins, president of the Virginia-based Scholarship Workshop, and recipient of $415,000 in scholarship funding.“You should start in your own backyard because the local-level scholarships aren’t as competitive as the national-level ones, due to the smaller pool of

applicants,” Ragins says. The best places to look for local scholarship sponsors are community churches, local-area businesses, professional organizations, hospitals, sororities and fraternities, the parents’ workplace, and other organizations that provide scholarships that are related to your extracurricular activities. In most cases, a listing of these organizations can be found at your local library.[3.] Make it a family affair. It’s no surprise that parents need to get their finances in order long before junior heads off to school. Most importantly, parents need to understand the importance of their expected family contribution, or EFC, a formula based on assets and income which can affect the amount of scholarship funding for their children. “The EFC is a key formula that many parents don’t understand and [the cost of college] really doesn’t matter because it all boils down to your EFC,” Beckham explains. Parents should attend scholarship workshops with their children to gain a better understanding of the financial aid process.[4.] Get a head start. There are two vital tips for getting ahead in the scholarship race. First, students can become eligible for federal grants and work-study money by applying for the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FASFA), which is a funding requirement for many colleges and universities. To receive your FASFA, contact the U.S. Department of Education, at 1-800-4 FED AID, or log on to the Web site at www.ed.gov.Second, taking the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test (PSAT) during the junior year of high school will qualify students for a bulk of the national scholarships that require a PSAT score.[5.] Get out of the classroom. For many scholarship committees, a well-rounded student who gives back to the community is just as impressive as an all-A scholar. Says Ragins: “Your activities outside the classroom are actually more important than high grades and SAT scores [because] the scholarship organizations want to know how you will impact a community or a college once you get there.” As for C students who are continuously nudged out of the scholarship competition, this may be the loophole you’ve been hoping for. “If “C” students have been involved [in volunteerism] and have extracurricular activities to their credit, they still have a very good chance [of winning scholarships] because they have the opportunity to show their good qualities,” Ragins adds.

On March 22, 2010, our government, against the will of the majority of Americans, passed the National Health Care bill. This bill is about the most detrimental thing that could have happened to this country for several reasons. In it’s passing, President Obama has radically changed the direction of our country and it will only get worse from here. Obama has succeeded in beginning to give government ultimate power over it’s people, more control of the economic direction of the country, and has insured the ultimate bankruptcy of the United States. Every point noted has succeeded and was deliberate. They now have more forced intrusion into our lives, and have begun the transition into making us all servants of the government. It sounds radical and harsh, but all bankrupt societies and governments started this way.

When Obama was a child, his father and mother both were Marxists. He grew up around this political ideology. All of his schooling, professors, family and friends, were all of communist, socialist and Marxist mindsets. Obama with his vast 9 month political career as a senator, fooled the American public and got elected president. All of his Czars, cabinet members, and anyone politically close to him are all of the same political backgrounds. These things are not hard to find out, and the picture is clear.

This bill that was passed, was done against the majority opinion of the country. The heads of the senate and house have chosen to ignore the will of the people they govern and passed this bill by any means necessary. The unethical and unlawful ways the bill got passed shows that the American people have been too complacent for far too long. These politicians only want the power, and now they just gained more of it. The side deals, the bribery, the strong arming, are all devices the private sector would be jailed for, and it’s all done with your money. Promises made cost money, again, your money. This bill could be in many ways unconstitutional, and we will have to see how that plays out in the court systems over the years to come. At least 13 states have already filed suit against the federal government to not accept this forced national health care, and more will follow.

Look at what has happened in a little over a years time. The government is now in the auto industry, the banking industry, and now owns fully the health care industry. They have helped themselves to a very large part of our economy with these intrusions. Also within the health care bill is something unrelated, yet gives government even more control, and that is the student loan programs. The government, within the health care bill, now controls the student loan program within the Department of Education.

I ask again, when has the government run anything right? They fixed the numbers to make health care look feasible but it is not. The weight of this new entitlement will, and I said will, bankrupt this country. There were many other ways to take care of the uninsured, but the government wanted all of the control and the money. Several years ago politicians were talking about abolishing the income tax in favor of a consumption tax or national sales tax. Back then I knew it would never happen because why would the government get rid of one tax over another when they can have both? That is what is about to happen. Not only will all income taxes rise, but very soon you will pay a national sales tax on everything you buy. Even then, this government can not contain the costs of this bill and it will be the economic fall of us all.

The IRS has been expanded under this bill to oversee compliance of the system. If you don’t have health insurance and choose not to buy the governments health care policy, they will fine you every single year until you do. The IRS will levy and seize for health care premiums or fines the same way they do for taxes. This is a forced action by the government with repercussions if you do not comply. And just wait to see the type of care you get. We will all suffer under this bill, period, but that is what social justice is all about.

Our current government is failing all of us and it only gets worse from here. Our representatives far from resemble patriots of the past, they are now socialists and Marxists that have gained power and are attempting to transform this country. They no longer listen nor do they care what we think. It’s not compassion or humility that drives them, it’s the power, it’s the control, and it’s the money. Their arrogance is pathetic and sad, and they underestimate the resentment and determination to take it all back that will follow.

Cricket in North Americaby Arjun Wadwa

Cricket is only popular in a few countries. Although there are over a billion fans of cricket, there are some areas of the world where cricket is not popular. One of those areas is North America. There is barely any international cricket in North America Most people in North America don’t play cricket and are not aware of it. This is due to the amount of time required to play cricket, the origins of cricket, and the lack of exposure through media.

In North America, football, baseball and basketball are some of the most popular games. There is a common element involved in all these games. The common element is that all these games last a few hours only. Cricket game can last up to 5 days! Since North Americans believe in a working life style and already have shorter games running on television, no one really has the time to watch cricket. One day International cricket games can also last for over 6 hours. This is a lot of time for a game. When there are shorter alternatives available, then most people would pick those alternatives. That is why Americans prefer watching baseball, basketball and football because these games come to an end within a few hours.Secondly, history of cricket suggests that it was invented in England.

India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, and many other countries were British colonies. These countries play cricket today. North American country was under British control, but there were other groups of people such as the French, Aboriginals, etc. This is why English culture of playing games was followed by India more quickly than Canada.

There is also a lack of exposure to cricket. Once a country adopts their sports, it is nearly impossible to change that trend. The media focuses on North American games only, and there is barely any exposure given to cricket. Most schools in North America don’t have cricket teams, and they also teach their students to play North American sports and games.

This way the North American generations never get exposure to Cricket. They continue to play hocky, basketball and football. When a country doesn’t play a certain type of sport, then there is no demand for the equipment. As a result, there are very few places in North America, which provide cricket equipment. The equipment is mostly expensive as well, and most people end up playing North American games.

In conclusion, lack of exposure, lack of interest, amount of time taken to play and watch cricket are some of the reasons why cricket is not a famous sport in North America.

1800’sApril 6th – 1862: The Battle of Shiloh, also known as the Battle of Pittsburg Landing, was a major battle in the Western Theater of the American Civil War, fought April 6–7, 1862, in southwestern Tennessee. Confederate forces under Generals Albert Sidney Johnston and P.G.T. Beauregard launched a surprise attack against the Union Army of Maj. Gen. Ulysses S. Grant. The Confederates achieved considerable success on the first day but were ultimately defeated on the second day.

April 9th – 1865: Despite heavy casualties, Grant pressed south, fighting at Spotsylvania C.H. and Cold Harbor. Unable to get through Lee’s army to Richmond, Grant attempted to cut the city off by taking Petersburg. Lee arrived first and a siege began. On April 2/3, 1865, Lee was forced to evacuate the city and retreat west, allowing Grant to take Richmond. On April 9, Lee surrendered to Grant at Appomattox Court House.

The mission launched on April 11, 1970 at 13:13 CST. Two days later, en route to the Moon, a fault in the electrical system of one of the Service Module’s oxygen tanks produced an explosion which caused a loss of electrical power and failure of both oxygen tanks
