  • Allies Turn the Tide

    • In 1942, German bombers were dominating in Europe, Japan gaining land in Pacific

    • Due to efforts on the Homefront and military victories, tide will soon turn.

  • Total War• Allies, just like the Axis

    powers, committed to Total war

    1. Governments redirect any/all resources

    2. Individual rights were limited (internment)

    3. Women help win the war (Rosie the Riveter)

  • Progress on Three Fronts

    Pacific Theater W European Theater E European Theater

    • Setback at the Battle of Coral Sea (first naval battle with aircraft carriers)

    • Huge turning point at the Battle of Midway (US wins) and Japan cannot launch any offenses

    • Allies (Eisenhower led) defeat Rommel in N Africa

    • Allies invade Italy from the South, remove Mussolini as dictator

    • German advances in Soviet Union halted at Leningrad.

    • Hitler tries to move south on Stalingrad, where a bloody long battle occurs.

    • Soviets defeat Nazis at Stalingrad and begin to push the Germans back to Germany in 1944.

  • Big Three

    • All mistrusted one another but compromised to work together against Hitler.

  • Invasion of France

    • By 1944, Allies ready to open another front and invade France

    1. Allied bombes relentlessly hit German posts

    2. D-Day (June 6, 1944) land invasion of France on the beaches of Normandy

    3. Patton’s tanks press on to Paris and liberate France, Germans flee

  • Advancing on Germany

    • Germany mounts a last ditch major offensive (Battle of the Bulge) which delays the Allied advance

    • Allies bombing Germany round the clock (Dresden, Hamburg destroyed)

    • Meanwhile the Soviets are advancing from the East

    • By 1945, defeat of Germany seemed inevitable

  • Yalta Conference

    • Big Three meet in Yalta, Soviet Union to plan the final stages

    • Stalin wanted control of E Europe, FDR and Churchill wanted self-determination

    • Plan to divide Germany into 4 zones (French, US, British and Soviet)

    • Plan to attack Japan next (Soviets to help)
