focus business briefs news to use

The Henderson-Vance Downtown Development Commission was established in the late 1980s to spur economic development in historic Downtown Henderson. Realizing the need to preserve and restore its wonderful history, the City of Henderson sought designation as a North Carolina Main Street City and gained that status in 1986. Composing 16 square blocks and occupying approximately 46 acres, Henderson’s Central Business Historic District is a testimony to the city’s role as the largest town and seat of Vance County since 1881. This district was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987 and contains 128 structures, 97 of which are contributing structures. Architectural detailing gives the district a remarkable turn-of-the-century appearance.

The HVDDC has a number of incentive grant programs available to property and business owners for new business start-up, exterior building improvements and signage. These grant programs are administered by the Economic Vitality and Design Committees. Special Events such as the Harvest Moonlight Gala, Independence Day Celebration, and Small Business Saturday are coordinated throughout the year by the Promotions Committee. In addition, the organization sponsors other events held in Downtown Henderson.

The HVDDC is composed of a volunteer board of directors and one part-time staff member. As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the HVDDC is funded by annual contributions from our local City and County governments, grants and raised funds. For more information, contact the HVDDC at 252-820-9785 or [email protected].

The “Gateway to Employment” class offered through the Vance County Department of Social Services’ Work First program is now being held at Vance-Granville Community College. The class was formerly held at the Franklin Vance Opportunity Center.

Work First is a partnership between Vance County Department of Social Services, Henderson Vance Chamber of Commerce and Vance-Granville Community College. Vance County has one of the longest running programs with close to ten consecutive years of Job Search/Job Readiness classes. The class is designed to help participants become self-sufficient by teaching employability skills to the unem-ployed and the under-employed during the span of the three week course.

Skills included in the class are job seeking, soft skills, interviewing, resume preparation, mock interviews and appropriate attire for the interview. Participants also have the opportunity to complete the Work Keys Assessment (a national career readiness assessment). Sheri Moss, Social Worker II at Vance County Department of Social Services, teaches the class and is assisted by Vanessa Jones, Work First Coor-dinator at the Henderson Vance Chamber. The main goal of the class is to get participants professionally trained and career ready. If you are seeking individuals who are prepared for employment or just want information about the program, contact Vanessa Jones at [email protected], (252)438-8414 or Sheri Moss at (252)492-2061.

The Henderson-Vance Chamber of Commerce is again offering sponsorship opportunities through the 2016 Chamber Pinnacle Program. It offers member businesses the opportunity to make a one-time annual investment that will allow them maximum publicity and exposure throughout the year at Chamber events and programs. If your company is interested in

taking advantage of this opportunity, please contact President John Barnes and see what this program can do for you.

Henderson Wellness Hosts BAH On February 16, Henderson Wellness Center celebrated its 15th year in business with a Business After Hours event. To make it

official, they also held a ribbon cutting on February 21, which was held at the center’s office location on Dabney Drive. Family, friends, staff, business owners, and associates joined together to commemorate the growing practices’ success in treating and restoring a wide range of health and spinal conditions. Dr. Brandon Taylor opened the practice originally as “Taylor Chiropractic” in February of 2002, later incorporating medical and massage services through KaKeasha Richardson, P.A.C. and Holly Nix, L.M.B.T. The addition of providers proved to be key in the practice’s success. In a brief speech, Dr. Taylor said, “I want people to know that as a team we understand every patient’s complaint is specific to them, and those individual needs are better managed by independent or unified provider care. There are not any pre-requisites needed to see just one of us. Our goals would not be achievable without the helpful support of this community.” Guests spent time catching up with friends, making new business contacts, enjoying delicious food and beverages and winning some great prizes.

For more information or appointments, please contact Henderson Wellness Center at 252-430-8000 or check them out on the web at www.hendersonwellnesscenter.com.

Small Business To Be Recognized

Moore Wins Ambassador Award

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce along with the Franklin, Granville and Warren County Chambers and the Vance-Granville Community College Small Business Center will host the 2017 Small Business Luncheon in a collaborative effort again this year. The event will be held at Henderson Country Club on Wednesday, May 3. Duke Energy is this year’s presenting sponsor.

Every year since 1963, the President of the United States has issued a proclamation announcing National Small Business Week, which recognizes the critical contributions of America’s entrepreneurs and small business owners. The U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) website states, “We recognize that more than half of Americans either own or work for a small business, and they create about two out of every three new jobs in the U.S. each year”. As part of National Small Business Week, the SBA takes the opportunity to highlight the impact of outstanding entrepreneurs, small business owners, and others from all 50 states and U.S. territories. Of those small businesses and their owners the organization says, “Every day, they’re working to grow small businesses, create 21st century jobs, drive innovation, and increase America’s global competitiveness”.

This local annual spring luncheon is a part of the national effort to recognize the merits of small businesses within every community.

After lunch and a keynote address by Chris Brewer of Brewer Cycles, the event will conclude with the presentation of the Vance County Small Business of the Year. This will be the fifteenth consecutive year that the Chamber has presented this award.

Franklin, Granville and Warren County will also award Small Business of the Year honors for their counties.

Former recipients of the Vance County award include Vanco Outdoor Equipment, Quick Print, Satterwhite Point Marina, Dataforge, Johnson’s Block & Concrete Company, Inc., City Tire, Inc., Henderson Wellness Center, Franklin Brothers Nursery & Greenhouses, Inc., Ballet Arts, Interiors Downtown, Fogg’s Exxon, Vance Furniture, Gray’s Gourmet, The Peanut Roaster and Raemac Transportation.

The event is by invitation only and will include lunch and a keynote address. To make a nomination, contact the Chamber of Commerce at 438-8414 or [email protected].

The Henderson-Vance County Chamber of Commerce is now seeking nominations for the 2016 Small Business of the Year.
