program, Bonnell opted to transfer toWashington.

Paus, Stanback and Bonnell give theHuskies a variety of opportunities at quarterback.Paus is more of a classic pocket passer whohas the athletic ability to run some option.Stanback is a gifted athlete who has worked toimprove his throwing mechanics. Bonnell hasgood quickness to run the option and is a solidpasser.

Gilbertson listed Paus as the top quarterbackentering spring dril ls and declared thecompetition for the starting position would notbe decided until the team’s fall practice period.

Running Back

Unlike the quarterback position, the Huskiesreturn a number of veterans at the tailback andfullback positions. Sophomores Kenny Jamesand Shelton Sampson figure to get the majorityof the carries. James averaged 4.3 yards percarry while rushing for 530 yards and two scoreslast season. He cracked the 100-yard mark forthe first time when he rushed for 104 yards on18 carries against Oregon. James gives theHuskies a solid between-the-tackles runner whocan also take the ball outside.

Sampson garnered just 60 carries in 2003but led the team with eight touchdowns. Heaveraged 4.6 yards per rush, gaining a total of274 yards during the season. A former statesprint champion, he was especially effective atrunning the option and taking the ball outside.

Junior Chris Singleton, will return in the fall

2004 Husky Spring OutlookAfter posting a disappointing 6-6 record in

2003, the Washington football team will rely on13 returning starters and 49 lettermen to get theHusky program back on the winning track. Thetask will be difficult with the loss of several keyplayers, including the all-time passer-receivercombination; the team’s top overall tackler andthe defense’s sack leader.

Washington’s offense will be built around sixreturning starters. For the first time since the2000 season, a quarterback besides CodyPickett will direct the team. Who that will be willnot be determined until the fall. The team has asolid crop of young receivers and running backsto fuel a new offense. The challenge will be tosolidify an offensive line that is small in numbersand been wracked by injuries.

The Husky defense also returns six starters, including all four players who made up thesecondary last season. A relativelyinexperienced defensive front will be asked totry and do a better job of stopping the rush andputting more pressure on opposingquarterbacks. Linebacker is another position witha host of young players looking to make animpact on the team.

Washington will face an ambitious schedulein 2004. After opening with home dates againstFresno State and UCLA, the Huskies hit the roadfor Notre Dame and Stanford. The second halfof the schedule includes road games at USC,Oregon and Washington State. With a youngsquad featuring inexperience at quarterback, itwill be important for the Huskies to start theseason on a successful note.

Quarterback

A trio of contenders, including junior CaseyPaus, sophomore Isaiah Stanback and redshirtfreshman Carl Bonnell, will attempt to fill the voidat quarterback created by the departure of CodyPickett. A three-year starter, Pickett finished hiscareer as Washington’s all-time leading passerwith 9,946 yards. Pickett’s run at the Huskyrecord book left little playing time for his backups.

Paus has a slight advantage in gameexperience. As a sophomore he appeared in sixgames, completing 10 of 23 passes for 151 yardsand two scores. He compiled most of thosestatistics in Washington’s 42-10 victory againstOregon. Pressed into action when Pickettsustained a first-half concussion, Paus lookedlike a long-time veteran in guiding Washingtonto the victory.

Stanback spent the majority of his redshirtfreshman year playing receiver while alsopracticing with the quarterbacks. Gilbertson

deemed that Stanback’s skills were too great tosimply have him stand on the sideline and chartplays. Stanback played in 11 games, earning hisfirst letter, and caught 10 passes for 143 yards. He completed both of his pass attempts whenplaying quarterback.

Bonnell sat out the 2003 season aftertransferring from Washington State. As a prepsignalcaller, he guided Kentwood (Wash.) HighSchool to back-to-back state 4-A statechampionships. He grayshirted the 2002 seasonat Washington State and never enrolled as a full-time student. When Mike Price left the Cougar

after missing the 2003 season due to a brokenfoot. The biggest of the tailbacks, he rushed for224 during his sophomore season. Louis Rankin, who will be a redshirt freshman, also impressedthe coaches during spring drills with his hard-charging style.

Fullback should be one of Washington’s bestpositions. Senior Zach Tuiasosopo is a triplethreat as a rusher, blocker and pass catcher. Hehad 29 carries for 87 yards last season whilealso catching 11 passes for 132 yards. JamesSims switch from safety to fullback givesWashington another gifted athlete in thebackfield. While a bit undersized for the position,he has tremendous speed and is a solid passcatcher. He was one of several playersGilbertson cited after spring drills as a standoutplayer. Walkons Dan Foafoa and Matt Coombsgive the Huskies great depth at the position.

Wide Receiver

Washington returns senior flanker CharlesFrederick and a number of talentedunderclassmen to help offset the loss of ReggieWilliams, a first-round selection in the 2004 NFLDraft. Williams left Washington after threeseasons as the most productive receiver inschool history and one of the best pass catchersin the history of the Pac-10. Williams had 238receptions during his career, including 89 lastseason.

Somewhat overshadowed by Williams,Frederick has quietly developed into a veryreliable receiver. He enters his senior seasonwith 104 career receptions to rank seventh onWashington’s all-time list. Last year Frederickwas second on the team with 59 catches for 831yards and five scores. He per-catch

average of 14.1 yards was actually better thatWilliams’ mark of 12.5. He had the longest catchof the year, an 87-yard effort that ranks as thesecond longest reception in school history.

Frederick’s speed, quickly and shifty broken field moves commands respect from defenders.Last year against Oregon State he broke HughMcElhenny’s 53-year-old school record with 371all-purpose yards against the Beavers. He wasvoted a first-team all-Pac-10 selection in 2003as a special teams player.

Redshirt freshman Charles Smith enters fallas Frederick’s backup at flanker. While he didnot play last year, he was impressive enough inspring drills to be earn the team’s most improvedreceiver award from the coaching staff.

At split end, sophomores Corey Williams andQuintin Daniels have the task of trying to replaceReggie Williams’ productivity. Last year the twocombined to catch nine passes for 83 yards andtwo scores as true freshmen. Corey Williamsetched his way into Husky history thanks to hisdramatic 21-yard game-winning touchdowncatch to beat Washington State in the Apple Cup.

Sonny Shackelford and Bobby Whithornewere two other true freshmen who saw playingtime last season. Shackelford led all of thenewcomers with seven catches for 92 yards.Whithorne played early in the year before aninjury forced him to redshirt the season. Thosetwo, along with redshirt freshman Anthony Russowill fill the slotback role.

Sophomore Jordan Slye, who started threetimes as a redshirt freshman, also returns aftermaking four catches last year. Redshirt freshmanCraig Chambers, a highly touted prep prospect,

will see his first playing time this season. Amongthe walkons at the position, senior ClaytonRamsey has earned one letter in limited playingtime.

Tight End

Washington’s reputation for producing top-flight tight ends is almostunsurpassed in college football. While there isno marquee player at the position, a handful ofveterans gives the Huskies one of the deepesttight groups in the nation.

Back from a back injury that sidelined himfor most of the 2003 season and spring ball, JoeToledo is the only two-time letterwinner amongthe returnees. At 6-6 and 285 pounds, he is aneffective blocker who is also a solid route runnerwith good hands. Toledo only has eightreceptions during his career, but figures to be akey weapon for the Huskies if he can stayhealthy.

With Toledo out of the lineup last year juniorcollege transfer Jon Lyon and redshirt freshmanBen Bandel earned their first letters and provedto be solid offensive contributors. Lyon finishedthird on the team with 17 receptions, averaginga hefty 13.6 yards per catch. Bandel caught 11passes for 82 yards.

Sophomores Dash Crutchley and JasonBenn add even more depth to the position. Bennearned a letter last year for his play on specialteams as a deep snapper while Crutchley willbe looking for his first playing time. During springdrills Robert Lewis moved to tight end fromlinebacker. He redshirted the 2003 season.

Offensive Line

The Huskies return three starters from lastyear’s offensive line. Due to a shortage ofplayers, several veterans from the defensive lineswitch sides during spring drills to give theHuskies more options on the line. The Huskiesmust replace tackle Nick Newton and centerTodd Bachert, who both started all 12 gameslast season. Also gone is guard Dan Dicks. Hiscareer ended prematurely due to chronic kneeproblems.

Headlining that group is senior left tackleKhalif Barnes. At 6-5, 310, Barnes is not onlygifted physically, he brings good speed to theposition. Barnes will be a rare four-year starteron the offensive line at Washington. He entersthe 2004 season with 37 career starts. Redshirtfreshman Chad Macklin enters fall camp asBarnes’ backup.

Senior Ryan Brooks, a three-timeletterwinner, should man the right side tacklespot. A pair of defensive linemen who moved tothe offense during spring drills, Graham Laseeand Tui Alailefaleula, will make their debuts asblockers this fall.

Also back on the offensive line are guardsTusi Sa’au and Clay Walker. Both players startedsix games last year. Sa’au was knocked out ofthe lineup due to a back injury but is expectedback for the fall. Walker can play both centerand guard. Rob Meadow, who moved into astarting role early in 2003 before suffering aseason-ending knee injury, will bolsters theguard position. Sophomore Stanley Danielsshifted from the defensive line and should pressfor substantial playing time. Sophomore JuanGarcia and redshirt freshman Erik Berglund

should also see their first playing time this year.Garcia, who can also play center, suffered abroken leg late in spring drills.

Junior Brad Vanneman, who started twicelast year, will be the center working withWashington’s inexperienced quarterbacks. Asolid run blocker, he has lettered the past twoseasons. While Walker or Garcia can backupVanneman, walkon Brandon Leyritz is also areturning letterwinner at the position.

Defensive Line

Washington’s defensive line returns just sixletterwinners and features just one senior. Thenumbers are somewhat skewed becauseseveral veterans relocated to the offensive lineduring the spring. Senior Manase Hopoi, a two-year starter, anchors the line from his defensiveend position. He managed 10.5 tackles for lossand four sacks last season. Expected to backupHopoi is junior college transfer Mike Mapu whoredshirted the 2003 season. Junior Ty Eriks ison the opposite side of the line. He switched tothe position from fullback last year and workedhis way into the starting lineup. SophomoreBrandon Ala was also a part-time starter at endlast year.

The interior of the defensive line featuressophomore Donny Mateaki. He started four ofthe final six games in 2003. Redshirt freshmanRedshirt freshman Casey Tyler will be acontender to start at the other tackle position.Sophomore Dan Milsten, who had his spring cutshort due to a knee injury, will battle with redshirtfreshman Jordan Reffett and Wilson Afoa forplaying time. Junior Andy Heater, who moved tothe line from tight end, should also see playingtime after recovering from a knee injury hesustained during spring drills.

Linebacker

Senior Tim Galloway, junior Joe Lobendahnand sophomore Scott White are the threeveteran linebackers who will anchor the middleof the Husky defense. Junior Evan Benjamin, aconverted safety, moves into the outsidelinebacker spot and gives the Huskies a greatcoverage player against pass-oriented teams.

Galloway shares the title as the team’sreturning tackler. A three-time letterwinner, hewas second on the team last season with 84stops. Lobendahn entered the 2003 season asa starter at inside linebacker but a knee injuryearly in the campaign forced him to the sideline.Lobendahn, like Galloway, is a solid and reliabletackler. White played in all 12 games andnotched 24 tackles. Durell Moss and Kyle Trew,a pair of redshirt freshmen, are likely reservesto the returning veterans.

Benjamin was impressive in making themove from safety to linebacker. He breaks greatspeed to the position and was one of the team’stop tacklers last year with 71 stops. The coachesselected him the most improved linebackerduring the spring. Tahj Bomar, one of nine truefreshmen to play last year, is his likely backupentering fall camp.

Defensive Backfield

Washington’s secondary includes nineletterwinner, highlighted by returning startersDerrick Johnson and Jimmy Newell. Johnsonhas started 27 games at cornerback and was asecond-team All-Pac-10 selection in 2003. Heenters his senior season with 11 careerinterceptions to rank sixth on Washington’s

career list. Last season he led the team withseven pass defenses. Senior Sam Cunninghamalso returns as a starter at cornerback. That duois backed up by sophomores Matt Fountaine andDre Simpson. Both of those players earnedletters last season. Josh Okoebor, a juniorcollege transfer and redshirt freshman Cody Ellisare also available.

Newell will direct the defense from freesafety. Last season Newell was finally able toremain healthy for an entire season and hefinished tied for second on the team with 84tackles and three interceptions. Junior collegetransfer Dashon Goldson, who missed the springwhile recovering from shoulder surgery, shouldprovide solid depth at the position along with KimTaylor a sophomore letterwinner.

Sophomore C.J. Wallace emerged fromspring drills as the probable starter at strongsafety. He played in 11 games last season andwas the team’s most improved defensive backduring the spring. Chris Hemphill, a 6-6 redshirtfreshman, provides Washington an unusually tallplayer at the position. He is another young playerwho show a lot of promise during spring ball.

Special Teams

Junior walkon Evan Knudson, who handledthe field goal and PAT conversion duties in 2003,returns as the incumbent at place kicker. Hemade 10 of 17 field goal attempts and led theteam in scoring with 63 points. Redshirt

freshman Michael Braunstein will battle Knudsonfor the starting spot.

Sophomore Sean Douglas, who wasWashington’s kickoff specialist last season, willtake over the vacated role of punter. Gifted witha strong leg, Douglas just needs to improve hisconsistency. Knudson is capable of also helpingwith the punting duties.

Frederick gives Washington’s the Pac-10stop punt return specialist. Last year he toppedthe conference with 11.7 yards per return on 29attempts. He was second on the team in kickoffreturns with 11. Several other players, includingDerrick Johnson, have proven themselves to besolid kick returners. Galloway and Jason Bennreturn as the special teams snappers. Mapu canalso help out on special teams in that capacity.

Head Coach Keith GilbertsonA well-respected coach in the Pacific Northwest for more

than 20 years, A long-time assistant coach at Washington,Keith Gilbertson was named the Huskies’ head coach justweeks before the start of the 2003 season. During his inauguralseason as the program’s head coach, he directed Washingtonto a 6-6 record, highlighted by the team’s sixth consecutivevictory against cross-state rival Washington State in the AppleCup.

Gilbertson knew he was inheriting a challenging role when heagreed to guide the program through a difficult time. Hereplaced Rick Neuheisel, who took Washington to four con-secutive bowl appearances. Neuheisel had his contract termi-nated after compiling a 33-16 record.

Gilbertson accepted the position because of his passion forHusky football. That relationship started when he was a childgrowing up in nearby Everett. He would often attend Huskygames, buying a one dollar ticket to sit in the inexpensiveendzone seats.

When presented the opportunity to join Don James UW staffin 1976 as a graduate assistant, he jumped at the chance.Since that time he has coached in the professional ranks, directed two other college programs and made several stopsback with the Huskies.

The 2004 season will be the 10th year of coaching atWashington for Gilbertson. He is currently in his third term ofservice with the Husky program. He was a graduate assistantcoach in 1976, an assistant coach from 1989-91 and againfrom 1999-2002.

Gilbertson is the 24th head coach in the program’s history. When he accepted the job at age 55, he became the oldestindividual to be named Washington’s head coach.

Gilbertson’s previous head coaching experience includesstints at Idaho (1986-88) and California (1992-95). He has acombined record of 48-35 at those two schools over sevenseasons. His overall record as a head coach now stands at 54-41.

Gilbertson had been the Huskies’ offensive coordinator from2000-2002. He was also a graduate assistant coach at the UWin 1976, as offensive line coach in 1998-90 and as the offensivecoordinator in the national championship season of 1991. In1999, he returned to Washington as assistant head coach andtight ends coach before being named offensive coordinatorprior to the 2000 season.

In his two terms as the UW’s offensive coordinator, Gilbertsonbuilt a reputation for varied and potent offenses. Gilbertson wasinstrumental in developing Washington’s offense into one ofthe most explosive in the nation between 1989 and 1991. Hewas the Huskies’ offensive line coach his first two seasons andtook over as the offensive coordinator in 1991 when Washing-ton won the national championship. The 1991 Washington

team led the Pac-10 intotal offense, rushing of-fense and scoring offense, relying on a balanced at-tack

In 2002, that offensewas the most potent pass-ing attack ever seen notonly at Washington, but inthe Pac-10. Junior quar-terback Cody Pickettsmashed the Pac-10record for single-seasonpassing yardage andcompletions while the UWthrew for 4,501 yards as ateam, breaking the old Pac-10 record by 712 yards.

In 2001, with a sophomore Pickett taking over the signalcalling, the Husky offense was second in the Pac-10 in passing, averaging 279.5 yards per game. A year earlier, behind seniorquarterback Marques Tuiasosopo, UW’s option-oriented rush-ing attack led the Pac-10 and was 16th nationally. The Huskies’ability to come from behind in the fourth quarter helped UW tothe Pac-10 title and the 2001 Rose Bowl Championship.

Gilbertson began his coaching career as a graduate assis-tant at Idaho State (1971-74) and earned a degree in educationfrom Western Washington, where he was a grad assistant in1975.

After serving the 1976 season as a grad assistant at Wash-ington for Don James, he was the offensive coordinator at UtahState from 1977 to 1981. In 1982 he joined Dennis Erickson’sstaff at Idaho for one season as the offensive coordinator. TheVandals recorded an 8-3 regular-season record and advancedto the quarterfinals of the NCAA I-AA playoffs.

For three seasons, from 1983-85, he coached in the USFL forthe Los Angeles Express. He returned to Idaho in 1985 as theoffensive coordinator and helped the Vandals to a 9-2 regular-season record and another trip to the NCAA playoffs. Thefollowing season he took over as Idaho’s head coach whenErickson was named head coach at Washington State.

Gilbertson led the Vandals to an 11-2 record in 1988, the bestmark in school history. That year Idaho advanced to the NCAADivision I-AA semifinals and he was named the Big SkyConference coach of the year. His 1987 and 1988 teams bothwon the Big Sky championships. His .757 career winningpercentage is still the highest in Idaho history.

His three Vandal teams produced a combined record of 28-9 and advanced to the I-AA playoffs all three seasons. Whenhe left Idaho his winning percentage (.757) ranked as thesecond best mark in the history of the Big Sky Conference. His

Gilbertson was also the last Calcoach to pin a loss on arch rival Stanford until 2002.

Following his head coaching tenure at California, Gilbertsonworked as an assistant coach for the Seattle Seahawks onErickson’s staff for three seasons. In 1996 he served as adefensive specialist and took over as the tight ends coach forthe 1997 and 1998 seasons.

THE COACH: New Husky head coach Keith Gilbertson hit the groundrunning, as his first official day as the Washington coach was only a monthand a day before opening the 2003 season against defending nationalchampion Ohio State. However, Gilbertson had the advantage of havingserved as an assistant coach at the UW for the previous four seasons, histhird stint as a Dawg assistant. Gilbertson, a native of Snohomish, Wash.,north of Seattle, served as a graduate assistant at the UW under DonJames in 1976, James’ second season. In 1989, Gilbertson left his headcoaching job at Idaho to join the Washington staff, first as offensive linecoach before taking over as offensive coordinator in 1991, when the Hus-kies won the national championship and led the Pac-10 in rushing offense, total offense and scoring offense. In 1992, Gilbertson took his second headcoaching position, traveling down to the coast to California. His four-yearstint at Berkeley was highlighted by the 1993 team that posted a 9-4 recordand defeated Iowa, 37-3, in the Alamo Bowl. That win stands as California’slast bowl victory. Until last season, Gilbertson was the last Cal coach tonotch a win over rival Stanford. Gilbertson, a 1966 graduate of SnohomishHigh School, played football at the University of Hawaii and graduatedfrom Central Washington in 1971. His coaching career includes two pro-fessional stints, first as an assistant for the L.A. Express in the USFL (1983-85) and then for the Seattle Seahawks (1996-98). In his eight seasons asa head coach, Gilbertson has posted a career record of 54-43 while going34-29 in conference games.

PAC-10 DOUBLE DIP: Keith Gilbertson is the first coach in Husky historyto come to Washington after having been head man at another Pac-10school. In fact, it’s relatively rare for a coach to have served in that capac-ity at more than one Pac-10 institution. Recently, Bruce Snyder (Californiaand Arizona State), Dennis Erickson (Washington State at Oregon State)and Larry Smith (Arizona and USC) have done it. Earlier examples includeTommy Prothro (Oregon State at UCLA) and Washington’s own Leonard“Stub” Allison, who coached one season at the UW (1920) before eventu-ally spending 10 seasons as Cal head coach (1935-44).

CONTINUITY OF COACHING: Despite the coaching change over thesummer, it’s still fair to say that Washington has had more continuity in itshead coaches than any Pac-10 school over the past five decades or so.Going back to 1957, Washington has had only five head football coaches:Jim Owens (1957-75), Don James (1976-92), Jim Lambright (1993-99),Rick Neuheisel (1999-2002) and Keith Gilbertson (2003). In that time, thenine other Pac-10 schools have had an average of about eight coacheseach, a total of 76 (counting some of them – Bill Walsh, John Robinson, etc. – more than once). Oregon has had the next fewest with only six headcoaches over that span. Arizona State, California, USC and WashingtonState have had eight each. Oregon State and UCLA have had nine headcoaches each since ‘57, Arizona has had 10 (including this season’schange), and Stanford, 11.

Final 2002 Husky Football NotesSPREADING IT AROUND: Washington had a remarkable 18 playersrecord a pass reception during the 2003 season. A scan of the recordsindicates that the UW has never had as many as 18 receivers make acatch in a single season (records go back to 1972; before that only leadersare listed in final stats). Washington has used 16 receivers in two some-what recent seasons: 1992 and 2001, when the 16 receivers includedOmare Lowe (on a shovel pass on a fake punt) and quarterback CodyPickett (thrown to himself on a batted pass). Of the 18 Huskies to catch apass this year, 12 were making their first career reception: Kenny James,Quintin Daniels, Shelton Sampson, Ben Bandel, Adam Seery, Ty Eriks,Corey Williams, Isaiah Stanback, Sonny Shackelford, Clayton Ramsey,Jordan Slye and Jon Lyon. The Oregon State game earlier this year wastruly an anomoly as the Huskies completed passes to only four receivers.

RANKED-WINS STREAK: With a win at No. 22 Oregon State this sea-son, the Huskies extended a streak that has now lasted 16 years. Includ-ing 2003, the Huskies have beaten at least one team ranked in the Associ-ated Press poll in each of the last 16 seasons. In fact, Washington hasdefeated an AP-ranked team in 26 of its last 27 seasons prior to 2002. Theonly break in the streak came in 1988 when the Huskies played only twogames against nationally-ranked foes — UCLA (No. 2) and USC (No. 3),losing both of those games.

.500 OR BETTER SEASONS: A win in the Apple Cup gave the Huskies achance to keep one of their most vaunted streaks alive. While a possiblebowl game would still determine this season’s success, last year, the Hus-kies had their 26th consecutive season with a .500 or better record. Wash-ington finished the last year 7-6. The last time that UW finished below .500was 1976, when the Dawgs went 5-6. Since then, the Huskies are 220-93-3 (.701) overall. The Huskies’ 26-season streak of non-losing seasons isthe 14th longest in NCAA history and the fourth longest current streak(BYU’s 27-season streak was snapped last year). Nebraska, Michigan andFlorida State have already gained the requisite wins to ensure a .500-or-better season in 2003. Here are the longest current streaks:

42 seasons Nebraska 1962-200336 seasons Michigan 1968-200327 seasons Florida State 1977-200326 seasons Washington 1977-2002

THE SHUTOUT STREAK: Washington’s Apple Cup win marked the 265thconsecutive game in which Washington has not been shut out. That’s thebest streak among Pac-10 schools. BYU had its NCAA-record streaksnapped at 361 games last week, meaning that Texas has the longestcurrent streak with 276 games. The last opponent to hold the Huskiesscoreless was UCLA (31-0) on Nov. 7, 1981. Washington has played 176Pac-10 Conference games since then without a shutout — the secondbest current streak among Pac-10 schools.

STREAKING IN THE PAC-10: While Washington’s string of 26 straightnon-losing seasons is easily the best in the Pac-10, their stretch of .500-or-better marks in Pac-10 play is even more dominant compared to therest of the league. The Huskies last finished under .500 in Pac-10 play in1988 (3-5), a streak of 15 straight non-losing league seasons. By contrast, every other team in the Pac-10 has had a losing league season at leastonce in the last four seasons (2000-2003). Only WSU, USC and UCLAhave three-year streaks currently running.

DECADE AFTER DECADE: Washington has won a conference title anda trip to the Rose Bowl in each of the last nine decades, dating back to the1920s when Washington won the berth in 1923 and 1925. In the 1930s,the Dawgs won the '36 title. In the '40s, Washington earned the trip in 1943and then barely slipped in under the wire in the 1950s, winning the 1959crown. The Huskies won two Rose Bowl berths in the 1960s -- 1960 and1963 -- and one in the 1970s (1977). Titles in 1980 and 1982 did it for thatdecade and three straight trips to Pasadena to begin the 1990s coveredthat 10-year span. Now in the 2000s, UW has become the first and onlyteam to earn Rose Bowl berths in nine straight decades. USC has thechance, over the next six years, to equal the Huskies if it gets a Rose Bowlberth sometime this decade.

WINNING THE CLOSE ONES: In 61 Husky games dating back to the startof the 1999 season, the winning margin (for either side) has been sevenpoints or fewer 24 times. In those 24 games decided by a touchdown or less,Washington is 16-8 and had won 10 straight before falling to Texas, 47-43in the 2001 Holiday Bowl. Washington had lost three straight such games(Texas, Michigan, Cal) before last season’s four-point win over Arizona onOct. 12, 2002.

FINISHING FIRST OR SECOND: Despite a fifth or sixth-place finish inthe Pac-10 in 2003, Washington has finished either first or second in theconference (including ties) in 18 of the last 27 seasons, dating back to afourth-place finish in 1976. Over that span, Washington has won thechampionship (outright or shared) eight times – 1977, 1980, 1981, 1990,1991, 1992, 1995 and 2000 – while finishing second 10 other times.

THE RED ZONE: While Washington’s red-zone struggles – both offen-sively and defensively – were well documented early in the season, therecent improvement had been heartening prior to the loss at Cal. Aftergoing 11-for-14 over three games, the UW was only 1-for-3 at Cal. Overthe previous three games, the UW had held opponents to only four scoresin nine red-zone trips before the Golden Bears went 6-for-6 with four touch-downs and two field goals. Here’s a breakdown of the season:

HISTORY LESSON: Successfully rushing the football and winning go hand-in-hand for the Huskies. Since 1990, Washington has rushed for 200 yardsin a game 58 times. The Huskies’ record stands at 53-4-1 (.922) in thosecontests. Since the 1995 season, Washington is 28-1-1 (.950) when rush-ing for 200 yards.

AGAINST THE RANKED TEAMS: Washington is 11-13 against top-10teams since 1990. Also since 1990, the Huskies have gone 31-30-1 againsttop 25 teams. Here’s a look at the Huskies’ record against top-10 foes overthe last 13 seasons:

THE 100-YARD FACTOR: Since the 1947 season, Washington is 158-36-3 (.810) when a Husky player rushes for 100 yards in a game. TheHuskies are 3-1 thusfar in 2003 in such games as Rich Alexis has toppedthe century mark three times – wins over Idaho and Stanford and a loss toNevada – and both Kenny James (104) and Shelton Sampson (131) wentover 100 in the win over Oregon. The Nevada game broke a streak of eightstraight Husky wins in games in which Alexis ran for 100 or more.

PLAYING AT HOME: Washington has gone unbeaten at home 13 timesin its history, including six times in the last 12 seasons. Washington haswon 72 of its last 88 (.824) games at Husky Stadium with one tie (72-15-1).Since 1980, the Huskies stand 120-26-2 (.818) at home. Since 1990, theHuskies are 46-10-1 (.816) at Husky Stadium vs. Pac-10 opponents.

HISTORIC HUSKY STADIUM: The 2003 season marks the 84th seasonof play in Husky Stadium. Original construction on the facility was com-pleted in 1920 when Washington played one game in the new campusfacility. Thanks to several major renovations, Husky Stadium’s seating ca-pacity has increased to its current total of 72,500. That makes Husky Sta-dium the 24th-largest college football venue in the nation. It is the 20th-largest on-campus facility in the country. UW’s all-time record in HuskyStadium currently stands at 337-137-21 (.702).

PICKETT SHATTERS MARKS: While his career may still include onemore game, senior quarterback Cody Pickett will finish his career as easilythe most prolific passer in Washington history. His 9,946 career passingyards are more than 4,000 more than any other QB in Husky lore and heholds a bevy of single-game, single-season and career marks. In lastseason’s seventh game, Pickett broke the UW single-season passsingyards record. Three weeks later vs. Oregon State, Pickett, with 14 gamesleft in his UW career at the time, broke the Huskies’ career passing yardsrecord. Another week later at Oregon, he broke the Pac-10’s single-seasonyards record and in the regular season’s final game at WSU, he becamethe first 4,000-yard passer in Pac-10 history. He also ranks on nearly everyother Washington career top-10 list, including No. 1 on many. In the loss atUSC, Pickett threw for 350 yards to extend his school record of sevenconsecutive 300-yard games, a streak that was broken at ASU. He had histhird 400-yard game of last year vs. UCLA. Pickett, who set a UW single-game record with 34 completions vs. Wyoming then broke it with 35 vs.Cal and tied that with 35 at WSU, now has 792 career completions, puttinghim first on that list. His 263.9 yards and 20.8 completions per game arecurrently school records and his career completion percentage of .577 isNo. 5. Pickett boasts a slew of firsts: he is the first UW QB to post morethan one career 400-yard game (he has four); the first to post 14 300-yardgames; and the first to throw for 300 yards in more than two consecutivegames (he had seven straight to start the 2002 season). In 38 career gamesPickett boasts seven of the top 10 and 11 of Washington’s top-18 single-game totals in passing yards. His 29 career 200-yard passing days aremost in UW history and his 14 50-plus-yard passes are also a school record. Finally, his 53 career TDs and 28 last season are both records. Here aresome UW top-10 lists on which Pickett ranks:

PICKETT IN THE PAC ... SEASON: With 4,458 yards in 2002, CodyPickett was the first 4,000-yard passer in Pac-10 history. Last November16 at Oregon, he passed Stanford’s Steve Stenstrom (1993) and WSU’sRyan Leaf (1997) to take over the top spot. He also surpassed Stenstrom’ssingle-season completions record (300 in 1993) and finished with 365 onthe year. Here are the top-10 single-season passers in Pac-10 Conferencehistory:

No. Yards Player, School, Year1. 4,458 Cody Pickett, Washington, 20022. 3,637 Ryan Leaf, Washington State, 19973. 3,627 Steve Stenstrom, Stanford, 19934. 3,499 Pat Barnes, California, 19965. 3,307 Akili Smith, Oregon, 19986. 3,285 Rob Johnson, USC, 19937. 3,242 John Elway, Stanford, 19828. 3,224 Danny O’Neill, Oregon, 19939. 3,130 Cade McNown, UCLA 1998

10. 3,092 Todd Husak, Stanford, 1998

PICKETT IN THE PAC ... CAREER: While even with a bowl game, CodyPickett is unlikely to move up any further, he will seemingly finish his careerNo. 4 on the Pac-10’s career passing yards list. The record is held byUSC’s Carson Palmer. Pickett has 10,220 career yards (Pac-10 counts allbowls). Here are the top 10 passers in Pac-10 history:

No. Yards Player, School, Years1. 11,818 Carson Palmer, USC, 1998-20022. 10,911 Steve Stenstrom, Stanford, 1991-943. 10,708 Cade McNown, UCLA, 1995-984. 10,220 Cody Pickett, Washington, 1999-20035. 9,680 Jonathan Smith, Oregon State, 1998-20016. 9,393 Erik Wilhelm, Oregon State, 1985-887. 9,349 John Elway, Stanford, 1979-828. 8,830 Jason Gesser, Washington State, 1999-20029. 8,664 Jake Plummer, Arizona State, 1993-96

10. 8,472 Rob Johnson, USC, 1991-94

PICKETT IN THE PAC ... TD PASSES: While Cody Pickett continues toclimb into the upper reaches of the Pac-10 yards list, he’s also worked hisway onto the conference’s career touchdown passes chart. With 55 careerTD passes (including bowls), Pickett is currently tied for 13th place. Here’sa look at part of the list:

No. TDs Player, School, Years8. 62 Danny O’Neill, 1991-949. 60 Bill Musgrave, Oregon, 1987-90

55 Jonathan Smith, Oregon State, 1998-2001

PICKETT DOMINATES UW SEASON TOP-10: Cody Pickett has nowposted three of the top-five passing seasons in Husky history in terms ofyards. This year, he’s already beaten Cary Conklin’s 2,569 (1989), whichhad been the record prior to Pickett smashing it last year. Until last sea-son, when Pickett shattered the old mark by 1,889 yards, Conklin had heldthe single-season record for 12 seasons. Heres’ the UW’s all-time top-10in single-season passing yards:

Single-Season Passing Yards PA PC Pct. TD Yds.1. Cody Pickett (2002) 612 365 .596 28 4,4582. Cody Pickett (2003) 454 257 .566 15 3,0433. Cary Conklin (1989) 365 208 .570 16 2,5694. PICKETT RETURNS WITH RECORD: Last season, then-junior CodyPickett smashed the Pac-10’s single-season passing yards record with4,458. The last time that a reigning Pac-10 record-holder in season pass-ing yards returned for an additional season with the record in hand was1994, when USC’s Rob Johnson came back for a senior season after throw-ing for 3,630 yards in 1993, breaking a record held at that time by DrewBledsoe (WSU, 1992). Cougar QB Ryan Leaf, whose record Pickett broke, also set the record as a junior, but didn’t return for his senior season. Inci-dentally, no Pac-10 QB has led the league in passing in back-to-back sea-sons (yards per game) since Stanford’s Steve Stenstrom did it in 1993 and1994.

FIVE-LETTER MAN?: Senior quarterback Cody Pickett will join a rareclub this year when he earns his fifth varsity letter. How is that possible? In1999, his true freshman season, Pickett appeared in one game, leadingthe Huskies through three series in a blowout win at Oregon State. Thatappearance helped to earn him a varsity letter that season. However, dueto a back injury, Pickett was granted a medical redshirt year for that sea-son and then returned to earn letters in 2000 (backup QB and FG/PATholder), 2001 (starting QB) and 2002 (starting QB).

CODY’S BOMBS: With three passes of over 70 yards in 2001 (78 to PaulArnold, 75 to Patrick Reddick, 74 to Reggie Williams), three more in 2002(89 and 80 to Williams, and 74 to Charles Frederick) and another three (70to Williams, 74 to Williams, 87 to Frederick) this year, Cody Pickett is theonly Husky QB ever to throw nine 70-plus-yard passes in a career. OnlyDamon Huard, Tom Porras and Billy Joe Hobert had ever thrown as manyas two 70-yard passes.

PRINCE CHARLES, MEET THE KING: Junior receiver/returner CharlesFrederick turned in a game for the ages October 18 in the Huskies’ 38-17win at then-No. 22 Oregon State. Frederick, long known by the nickname“E.T.”, set new career highs with nine receptions for 216 yards, good fortwo touchdowns. One of those two scores went for 87 yards, the second-longest receiving play in Husky history. Frederick also dazzled the nationalTV audience with an 86-yard punt return for a touchdown in the first quar-ter, sixth-longest in Husky lore. He finished with 216 receiving yards, 101punt return yards and 54 kickoff return yards, good for a grand total of 371all-purpose yards and was, as far as the records indicate, the first Pac-10player ever to score twice in a game on plays of longer than 85 yards(USC’s media guide doesn’t have sufficient records to know for sure). Those371 all-purpose yards broke a 53-year old school record held by “The King,”Hugh McElhenny, who compiled 362 in a game vs. Washington State in1950. McElhenny, considered by many the greatest offensive player inschool history, went on to an NFL Hall of Fame career. Frederick’s 371yards were only eight short of the Pac-10 record of 379, set by Stanford’sGlyn Milburn in 1990. Frederick currently leads the Pac-10 in punt returnswith 11.7 yards per return.

WILLIAMS BREAKS ALL MARKS: Wide receiver Reggie Williams wasonly one game into his sophomore season when he passed the 1,000-yard mark for career receiving. In the loss at USC last Oct. 29, he had histhird straight 100-yard receiving game (tying a school record) and his eighthcareer 100-yard day (breaking the school record). Williams, who currentlyranks No.5 (7.42 per game) in the NCAA in receptions per game and No.16 in receiving yards per game (92.42), made it to the top of the UW careerreceiving yards with his 198-yard performance at Oregon in week 11 lastseason. With 3,536 career yards, he has beaten Mario Bailey’s old recordby more than 1,400 yards. With 14 catches in the Oregon game last year(most ever by a UW receiver), Williams broke Jerome Pathon’s single-season record of 69. Williams ended 2002 with 94, the third-highest totalin Pac-10 history. His 1,454 receiving yards in 2002 were also a schoolrecord, beating Pathon’s 1,245 in 1997. Williams’ 1,454 yards were onlytwo short of the Pac-10 record (1,456 by Stanford’s Troy Walters). At WSU(where he had 12 catches), he passed Paul Skansi on the UW careerreceptions chart and now tops the list with 238. Williams now ranks No. 1on the UW career yards-per-game list by a large margin. With his averageof 98.2 yards per game during his career thus far, he’s 32 yards per gamebetter than Brian Slater’s former mark of 65.9. REGGIE’S RECORD SEASON: In last season’s 10th game vs. OregonState, wide receiver Reggie Williams became only the fourth wideout inUW history to post a 1,000-yard season in receiving yards. With his 169-yard game at Washington State, Williams passed Jerome Pathon to takeover the No. 1 single-season spot in UW history and the No. 3 spot in Pac-10 history. With 973 yards as a freshman in 2001 and 1,109 this year,Williams is the only Husky with three of the top-10 receiving yardageseasons in school history. Here are the top-10 single-season receivers(yards) ever at the UW and the top five in Pac-10 history (by yards):

MR. NOVEMBER: During Washington’s season-ending, three-gamewinning streak (Oregon State, Oregon, Washington) last year – all threegames played in November – Reggie Williams caught 35 passes for 461yards (153.7 yards per game) and four touchdowns. In the WSU win,Williams set an Apple Cup record with 12 receptions bettering his ownmark of 11 he set as a freshman in 2001. In three career games vs.Washington State, Williams has 30 receptions for 431 yards. His Novembermagic has continued in 2003. In the win over Oregon, he caught sevenpasses for 130 yards and at Arizona, he had 13 receptions for 121. So,over the last seven November games, Williams has made 66 receptionsfor a total of 794 yards, an average of 9.4 catches and 113.4 yards pergame. In 12 career games in the month of November, he has averaged 8.0catches and 106.4 yards per game.

HOW GOOD IS REGGIE?: Receiver Reggie Williams, a first-team All-Pac-10 selection and a consensus first-team All-America in 2002, had, statistically, the best two-year run in Pac-10 receiving history. In 2002,Williams’ 94 receptions were the third-most in Pac-10 history and his 1,454yards were second on the all-time conference list. In his first two years,Williams caught 149 balls for 2,427 yards and 14 touchdowns. No receiverin Pac-10 history has ever posted that many receiving yards over a two-year span, and the only two players with that many receptions over twoseasons – Arizona’s Dennis Northcutt and Arizona’s Bobby Wade – bothdid it during their junior and senior seasons, as did USC’s KeyshawnJohnson, who had one fewer reception than Williams. Incidentally, Williamswould need 94 receptions and 1,556 more receiving yards to reach thePac-10 records of 248 and 4,047 yards, both held by Stanford’s Troy Walters(1996-99). Here are the top-four, two-year receiving performances in Pac-10 history:

REGGIE’S 100-YARD GAMES: With 121 yards receiving Nov. 8 at Arizona, junior receiver Reggie Williams notched his 16th career 100-yard game.Williams already held the record entering this, his junior year, and witheach 100-yard game, he will extend it. He’s now doubled all other UWreceivers. Here’s the Huskies’ top-five receivers in terms of career 100-yard games:

PAC-10’S TOP PASS-CATCH COMBOS: Over the last two seasons,Cody Pickett and Reggie Williams have established themselves as oneof the best QB-WR combinations in Pac-10 history, especially over thecourse of more than one season. While it’s hard to quantify who’s “thebest”, the following statistics offer at least a basis for comparison. Followingis a list of the all-time top statistical Pac-10 QB-WR combos. None of theothers on the list can match either Pickett’s or Williams’ totals, much lesstheir combined yardage. To be considered for the list, both players musthave played together for two seasons, while accumulating yardageminimums of 5,000 (QBs) and 1,500 (WR) during those two seasons.

Northwestern’s Kunle Patrick has 46 straight, thelongest current streak in the country.

ALEXIS RISING: With 2,371 rushing yards and 28 rushing TDs on 582career carries, senior tailback Rich Alexis has climbed some UW top-10career lists. Alexis ranks No. 9 on the Huskies’ career rushing yards-per-game list with 59.3. He has captured third place on the career rushingattempts list and has moved into sixth place in career yards. Finally, hehas moved into a tie for third place on the career rushing TDs chart. Hereare some top-10 lists on which Alexis currently ranks:

D.J. PICKS UP THE PACE: Junior cornerback Derrick Johnson has longbeen a key part of the Husky defensive secondary, having started 26 gamesin his UW career. After having registered only one interception over thefirst 21 games of his career, he’s emerged as a top pickoff artist. Over thelast 15 regular season games, Johnson has compiled 10 interceptions toraise his career total to 11. That ties Johnson with two other Huskies forsixth place on the UW career leaders chart. Johnson has six interceptionsthis season. His six picks in 12 games (0.50 per game) are good for third inthe Pac-10 Conference and 14th in Division I-A.

TANK TEARS IT UP: Senior captain and defensive tackle/end Terry “Tank”Johnson got his season off to a good start at Ohio State, racking up a pairof sacks in the Huskies’ loss to the Buckeyes. He followed that with threetackles for loss, including one sack, vs. Indiana, two sacks and three TFL’svs. Idaho and three TFLs against Stanford. Johnson leads the UW with18.5 tackles for loss (third in the Pac-10) and 10 sacks (fifth). Johnson, aformer partial qualifier, could return for another season if he graduates thisyear (he’s on track to do so), Last year, Johnson, who orginally came tothe UW as a tight end, was tied for third on the team with five sacks. Inci-dentally, in each of the last three seasons, Johnson has managed to scorea touchdown. He scored on a 38-yard interception return in the 2001 Holi-day Bowl vs. Texas, intercepted a pass in the end zone last year vs. SanJose State and recovered a fumble in the endzone this season vs. Idaho.

KENNY & SHELTON: With senior Rich Alexis out with an injury the lastthree-plus games (he was hurt partway through the Oregon State game),a pair of redshirt freshmen have had to step up to fill the void. For whateversuccess they may have had prior to Nov. 1 game at Oregon, they trulyearned the limelight with their performance vs. the Ducks. In that game, a42-10 Husky win, Sampson rushed for 131 yards and three touchdownson only six carries while James, the starter, ran for 104 yards on 18 at-tempts. It was the first time since the 2000 Apple Cup that two Huskies hadrun for 100 yards in a single game and Sampson was the first Husky sincethe 2001 Stanford game that a Husky had run for three scores. Since step-ping into their larger role (the last five games), the pair have combined for626 yards and six touchdowns on 134 carries, good for a 4.7-yard averageper carry.

BACHERT FOR RIMINGTON: The Rimington Trophy Committee has an-nounced the Watch List for the 2003 Rimington Trophy, honoring the nation’sbest college center, and Husky senior Todd Bachert is on the list. Theaward is named for Dave Rimington, college football's most decoratedoffensive lineman. Rimington is the only player ever to win the OutlandTrophy twice, the former University of Nebraska center also won theLombardi Rotary Award in 1982 and was named a two-time consensus All-America center and two-time Academic All-American.

BIDDLE THE BULLET: Senior safety Owen Biddle has emerged this sea-son as one of the top special teams players in the Pac-10 Conference.Biddle, a former walkon who earned a scholarship three seasons ago, hascompiled a total of 20 tackles this year on special teams alone. By com-parison, last season, Arizona linebacker Ray Wells was named the Pac-10’s first-team all-conference special teams player (non-kickers), and Wellscompiled 11 special teams tackles all season according to current UW andformer Arizona special teams coach Scott Pelluer.

WALKONS FOR KICKS: Despite the arrival of two scholarship freshmen,it’s been a pair walkons that have handled the lion’s share of the kickingduties this season. Both of them – senior punter Garth Erickson and juniorkicker Evan Knudson – have been solid thusfar. Erickson, who like Knudsonhad never appeared in a game before this year, is averaging 41.8 yardsper punt this season and has had 20 of his 70 punts downed inside theopponent’s 20-yard line. He’s a big reason that the Huskies currently rankfourth in the Pac-10 and 20th in the nation in net punting (38.6). Knudsonis 10-for-17 thusfar on field goal attempts. Three of his six misses havebeen due to blocks. Knudson booted three field goals in the loss at UCLAand hit a 46-yarder in his first career attempt at Ohio State, still his seasonand career long. Knudson is also 33-for-36 on PAT tries and leads theHuskies in scoring with 63 points.

GARTH’S BIG SEASON: While nothing will become official until the endof the season, senior Garth Erickson is currently in the midst of one of thetop-five seasons ever by a UW punter, at least in terms of his averageyards per punt. Erickson, who is currently punting for a 41.8-yard average, would rank fourth all-time if the season ended today. Here’s a look atWashington’s top-five list for season average yards per punt:

Season Punting Average No. Yds. Avg.1. Skip Boyd (1973) 69 2,964 43.02. Skip Boyd (1974) 57 2,407 42.23. Jeff Partridge (1982) 65 2,739 42.14. Garth Erickson (2003) 70 2,925 41.85. Thane Cleland (1986) 47 1,938 41.2

KICKING IT DEEP: While true freshman Sean Douglas originally camefrom his home near Omaha, Neb., to the UW to be the Husky punter, itturns out he’s become the Huskies’ kickoff specialist. While senior GarthErickson is handling the punting duties, Douglas is biding his time kickingoff, and he’s performed very well. Douglas has kicked off a total of 56times this season. Of those 56, only eight have been returned beyond the28-yard line and one other was placed at the 35 after being kicked out ofbounds. Of the 56, 22 have resulted in touchbacks while an additional 10have been returned inside the 20 (not counting penalties on either thekickoff or return team). The longest return of the year by a Husky opponentwas by Nevada’s Maurice Mann, who returned a kick 43 yards to the 44(starting at the one-yard line).

SIMS EARNS CW SCHOLARSHIP: Keith Gilbertson announced Sept.17 that James Sims is the 2003 recipient of the Curtis Williams EndowedFootball Scholarship. Sims is a sophomore safety who earned his firstletter last season, appearing in 11 games. The Curtis Williams Scholarshipis named for the former Washington safety that died in May, 2002, at theage of 24. Williams suffered a spinal cord injury during the 2000 seasonthat left him paralyzed below the neck. Funds that were raised to assistwith his long-term care were used to establish the endowed scholarship. As a tribute to Williams, Sims has switched jerseys to wear the number 25uniform Williams wore during his career. Sims is the first Husky player toappear in a game wearing number 25 since Williams' injury.

All three servedas captain for the first time in their career.
