1 Welcome to Spring Brook! As the new president of the PTA, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome every new and returning family to the 2009-2010 Spring Brook school year! The PTA started off this school year with our Back to School Party. We were blessed with beautiful weather, and the families that came had a great time. From the dunk tank to the rockin’ DJ (thanks Kaptain Karaoke!), there were lots of smiling faces. A special shout out to Judy Santiago, Peggy Schander and Kristina Nicolellis for all the hard work that went into the planning for this event. Thanks also to Julie Szimon for apparel wear, Kim Van Cleave for Market Day and Kiersten Menconi for the PTA directory. The Back to School Party was a terrific way to start out the school year. My name is Eileen Priestley, and I have been a part of the Spring Brook community for the past 13 years. I believe strongly that as members of our PTA we can provide enrichment as well as fun for our children. We sponsor Art Awareness, field trips, educational speakers and family events to bring our students together. We are fortunate to have on the PTA board 1 st Vice President Peggy Sebring, 2 nd Vice President Connie Heniades, Secretary Kathryn Ward, and Treasurer Eileen Lowdon. It is our hope that you will join us to work as a whole to make the school the best it can be. I definitely need to thank the retiring officers, Treasurer Stephanie Fitzpatrick, Secretary Barb Samson, 1 st Vice President Janet Carlson and President Karen Francis. Karen has been an invaluable help in my transition into this job. It is a great relief to know that she is still here at Spring Brook to assist me. As the youngest of my four daughters enters fourth grade, my enthusiasm for Spring Brook is as strong as ever. A Message From Your Principal

W e are back to school and all is well. The building looks great and the teachers are enthusiastic about the school year. The staff would like to welcome you to an exciting

educational year. We hope to challenge each student to learn, but also make each child feel that he/she is an integral member of our school.

I know the busing situation has been a challenge, and I appreciate everyone’s patience and support. We have worked out the kinks with the buses, and they should be running more smoothly.

As educators, we know that developing and maintaining a cooperative relationship with our students and parents characterizes superior education. Please look for opportunities to get involved at Spring Brook. Helping in the classroom, chaperoning field trips, and serving on the PTA will help you become connected to the school.

If you have any questions regarding our school, please feel free to contact my office at 630-428-6600. Welcome to the 2009-2010 school year.

Coordinator Tammy Sommers.

PTA’s Back-to-School Celebration Starts the School Year Off Right!

The PTA’s annual Back-to-School Celebration was held on Wednesday,

August 19th and was a great success! After initially being rescheduled due to weather, this year’s celebration was a great way for students to mingle, renew friendships and get excited about another great school year at Spring Brook.

Kaptain Karaoke provided music while the kids bounced, slid and climbed on giant inflatables. Dom-ino’s pizza, ice cream and water were available for purchase (helping to defer some of the PTA’s cost for the event). Of course, the biggest hit by far was the dunk tank! Thanks to Mr. Alessia, Mr. Fordonski, Ms. Hoyle, Mrs. Lewis, Mrs. Provost, Mr. Vance and Mr. Worst for participating!

A big thank you also to all of our parent volunteers who helped to make this event a success!

Committee Updates Parent Resource Center to the Rescue! Some Sanity Please! Something’s odd around the house…ah, yes, it’s the quiet that has replaced the constant summer bickering of siblings with each other and at each other all day long. Refreshing! The trick is to main-tain that peace even when they are home.

Siblings Without Rivalry: How to Help Your Children Live Together so You Can Live Too by Adele Fa-ber and Elaine Mazlish is available in the Parent Resource Center. This book tackles the age-old problem of children in a family vying for attention and position. With the reassurance that rivalry is to-tally normal, and even necessary, these experts give lots of concrete suggestions and scenarios to help address the situation. While siblings will never get along completely all the time, the ideas here help parents to create a family environment that can alleviate the reasons kids fight.

One of the most obvious suggestions is to avoid compar-ing your children. While this seems like a no-brainer, Fa-ber and Mazlish point out some ways we do this without realizing it. For example, praising one in front of the other, even when they have not been competing at the same task, can still make the one feel less than the other. Rather than praise, the authors recommend par-ents comment on how the child achieved the goal or completed the task. Instead of “You played an awesome game! Great job! I’m proud of you!” (which sounds so positive and harmless!) try “You defended the goal three times and made a strong pass. I’m proud of the way you helped your team.” Clearly this is a different way to commend your child, while not leav-ing the other to feel he or she doesn’t measure up.

Another basic issue that Faber and Mazlish offer is a new twist on is equality. They suggest: “Instead of worrying about giving equal amounts, focus on each child’s individual needs. Instead of claiming equal love, show children how they’re loved uniquely.” (70-71). This is accompanied by some exam-ples and ideas of exactly how to do it. The authors present an interesting way to look at your family dynamics and tweak them to foster some peace and quiet, even when the kids are home!

This book and many others on a variety of topics are available just inside the LMC when you enter through the front doors. Stop by any time and check it out.

By Carrie Wujek, Parent Programs

Exactly What is Parent Programs?

Parent Programs is a committee of the PTA that is just for parents. While so many others focus on the students or teachers, we strive to provide information and resources strictly for parents. Last year we sponsored some great events, including a presentation on study skills, a talk on parent self-care to beat the winter blues, a nutritionist with healthy food ideas and a seminar on coping with bullying.

A Note From Our PTA Hospitality Chairs! BACK TO SCHOOL SUCCESS! On Wednesday morning, August 19th, we wel-comed back all the teachers and staff to Spring Brook with a wonderful breakfast provided by volunteers on the PTA Hospitality team. Everyone had a wonderful time and really appreciated the opportunity to sit down and relax with delicious food before the exciting first day of school. We send out a huge thank you to all of you who so generously donated food and supplies for this special breakfast.

In addition to the meal, we created special water bottles for each staff member to celebrate the start of school. Each new staff member also received a decorated Spring Brook cookie with a note welcoming them to our school. We are looking forward to a fun year of recognizing the staff at our school for all the many things they do for our children. Your support and ideas are always appreciated!

Art Awareness New Volunteer Orientation Meeting is September 28!

Never heard of Art Awareness? This fun, hands-on program al-lows parents the chance to get into the classroom and get stu-dents interested in art. This unique program

supplements Spring Brook's fantastic art program, and it also gives you a chance to get to know your child's class, to come up with art projects that the kids will love, and to create lasting memories for them. You don't have to be an artist or a teacher to participate, you just have to love interacting with kids! Working in teams, each month parents prepare a short mini-lesson and art project on a certain artist and artwork. You will only be assigned to YOUR child's class, and you'll have access to all the re-search materials you'll need, as well as a newly stocked cabinet full of wonderful art supplies that will inspire your imagination! Those who have al-ready volunteered for Art Awareness will receive a note in your child's take-home folder. The meeting for new volunteers will be in the multi-purpose room on September 28th from 9:15 - 10:00AM. If you haven't volunteered yet, but would like to, please join us at this meeting and sign up there. If you miss the meeting but still want to join, send an email to [email protected]. We'd love to have you!

Kindergarteners Start the Year Off with a Smile! Say CHEEESE! That is what all

the kindergartners said on their first full day of school, Friday, August 21.

The PTA’s Kindergarten Pictures Commit-tee had organized an enthusiastic group of parents ready and willing to snap the smiles of all of Spring Brook’s newest students.

Each student's picture was taken with his or her teacher, and the committee was able to get all the photos printed and placed in port-folios entitled “My First Day of Kindergarten” for the children to take home on their first day.

Big thanks go out to all the teachers who were so accommodating and made this a very smooth process.

The 2009-2010 PTA Reflections Program’s theme is:

Beauty is… Students, show us what “beauty” is to you! You can create works of art in the areas of dance choreography, film production, literature, musical composition, photography and the visual arts!

Parents/Guardians, the PTA Reflections Program is a National program to encourage students to express themselves through art. This year the entries should reflect what beauty means to the student.

Please print and complete the entry form distributed via listserv on September 4, and attach it to your child’s artwork according to the rules. Additional entry forms will be available in the school’s office.

Be sure to follow the rules for each category closely! The Due Date for entries is Friday, Oct. 2, 2009.

Please be informed that your child’s art may be chosen to be displayed at the District level and therefore will not be returned to them until January. Please encourage your child to create some art showing what “beauty” means to them!

Have fun creating what is beautiful to you, because “beauty” is all around us!

LMC Update

During Curriculum Night, Spring Brook par-ents got involved in the LMC by answering the question: What am I reading with my child? The bulletin board served as a visual reminder to parents how important it is to read with your child, no matter their age. Some of the many stellar parent book suggestions include: Savvy Fancy Nancy, The Pigeon Finds a Hot Dog, Oh, Yuck! The Encyclopedia of Everything Gross, The Black Stallion, Llama Llama Red Pajama, The Princess and the Pizza, Spiderman, Pinkali-cious and Swindle. Thank you to all the Spring Brook parents who made book suggestions!

Spring Brook LMC is awarded Monarch Award Grant ISLMA, the Illinois School Library Association has created a kids’ choice award, similar to the Re-becca Caudill Award, but for younger students. The Monarch Award list has 20 nominee titles, ranging from non-fiction, poetry, picture books, to chapter books. Last year, 1st-3rd grade Spring Brook students participated in the Monarch Award. Teachers read ten or more of the titles from the nominee list to students in the classrooms. This year, Spring Brook's LMC applied for and was selected from more than 435 libraries to re-ceive a set of Monarch Book Award nominees for 2009-2010. This grant will make it possible for Kin-dergarten to be added into the grade levels that participate in the Monarch Book Award.

For more information about the Monarch Award, visit the ISLMA website at http://www.islma.org/monarch.htm.

Did you know? Parents can open a library account for the Spring Brook LMC?

Simply fill out a form at a PTA meeting, or stop by the LMC and talk to Miss Hoyle or Mrs. Herrick.

With your account, you will be able to check out books from the Parent Resource Center. Look for reviews of Parent Resource Center books in each issue of Huskie Tales!

Hello Spring Brook Families !!!

My name is Marybeth Stewart, and I will be acting as the Special Needs Liaison for our school! That means I am your “go-to” volunteer for information if you have or know a child with special needs. This is the second year I am the Treasurer for the Indian Prairie Special Needs (IPSN) PTA, and I am proud to say the District 204 IPSN PTA was the first of its kind in Illinois, and is still the largest.

Our PTA’s mission is to unify and support all parents and caretakers of children within our district as their special needs kids enter the school system. I am available to YOU to answer questions, hear concerns, give information or steer you in the direction to address your needs. My goal is to be available at each Spring Brook PTA meeting with updates on what the IPSN PTA is doing. If I can’t make it, I will send a letter to be read so I can still keep you informed. I would like to advo-cate for our students so that they can participate as fully as possible in the activities that our own awesome PTA has planned. Have a suggestion?? Feel free to contact me via e-mail: [email protected].

This is my family’s second year at Spring Brook, and my son and I are having so much fun. Zachary is in first grade this year, so I am usually around door #9 at pickup time.

I am looking forward to meeting more Spring Brook parents and being a part of the Huskie com-munity!!

One of the most frequent questions from new parents this year about PTA membership has been, “What does it mean to join the PTA?”

Our member families are the reason that the Spring Brook PTA is able to provide our chil-dren with enriching programs like Art Aware-ness, Parent Programs and Reflections. PTA hosts special events like the Back to School Party and the Spring Event, and it provides class field trips, educational speakers and supplies, and much more. For detailed infor-mation about the PTA budget, please see the Treasurer’s report in this and every issue of Huskie Tales.

The PTA appreciates every membership, whether or not you choose to volunteer, because each member increases PTA’s ability to advocate for our children. So far this school year, 63 percent of Spring Brook families are PTA members. If you choose to volunteer your time, you can be sure that it will have a posi-tive impact on your child and the school. Decades worth of research shows that when parents are in-volved, students perform better in school, exhibit increased motivation and better self-esteem.

Finally, the PTA provides the opportunity to meet other parents and work together toward a common goal—our children’s success.

We invite and encourage all parents to attend our monthly PTA meetings and learn more about member-ship and volunteer opportunities. Further information including links to the PTA handbook, meeting sched-ule, Huskie Tales newsletter and fundraiser information may be found on the Spring Brook website at http://springbrook.ipsd.org.

Vision and Hearing Screenings

During the months of September through November, vision and hearing screenings will be conducted at Spring Brook School. Vision and hearing screenings will be done for grade 2. Hearing will be screened for grades K, 1 and 3. Supported education students and new students will also be screened. Vision screening is not a substitute for a complete eye and vision evaluation by an eye doctor. Your child is not required to undergo this screening if an optometrist or ophthalmologist has completed and signed a report form indicating that an exam has been done within the last 12 months, and the evaluation is on file at school. H1N1 Update Our district is preparing for this year's flu season and the expected return of the H1N1 virus. We are following the guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and taking direction from the DuPage and Will County Health Departments to monitor flu conditions and ensure that our schools remain functioning in a normal manner this flu season.

The district's focus is on the following proactive measures to lower the risk of students and staff catching the flu:

• Students will be directed to wash their hands before they eat lunch.

• A video on respiratory etiquette will be shown to students.

• Hand sanitizers will soon be in all classrooms, lunchrooms, and main offices as a back-up to hand washing.

• Certified school nurses will communicate with staff about correct hand washing procedures and staff will then instruct students.

• Principals will include frequent messages in their morning announcements to remind students about the importance of hand washing and respiratory etiquette.

• Building cleaning procedures were reviewed to ensure the district is following all public health guidelines.

Although the district is taking the above steps, we need the help of our parent partners to assist us in our efforts. Please take a moment to remind your children to wash their hands and instruct them not to share personal items like drinks or food. Instruct them to cover up their cough or sneeze using their elbow, arm or sleeve instead of their hands. They also need to avoid touching their eyes, nose and mouth to prevent spreading germs. Health officials also recommend having your family receive a seasonal flu shot. Opportunities for the H1N1 flu shot will be dictated by the county health department.

Lastly and most importantly, if your child is ill, please keep him or her at home. A child must be fever free without taking fever-reducing medications for 24 hours before returning to school. The start of the year is always a good time to review childcare contingency plans should you need to keep your child home from school.

Thank you for your efforts to help us keep our students and staff healthy this school year. For more information, visit the links above or call 1-800-CDC-INFO. Sincerely, Kathy Birkett Superintendent

This is a community services program that directly benefits individuals within the Naperville community, as Heartland Blood Centers, our partner for this event, is the sole provider of blood to Edward Hospital, RUSH-Copley Medical Center and Central DuPage Hospital.

We can all make a difference! Let’s all work together to teach our youth the importance of contributing to the community. Family and friends are invited to support this effort to give back. The top two classrooms with the most donors will be recognized by the school staff and rewarded with an additional recess period and five Blizzard Bucks per child.

FAQ’s How long does it take to give blood? While an appointment takes between 45 minutes to an hour, the actual process of giving blood lasts only approximately 5-6 minutes. The rest of the time the donor is checking in, given a brief medical screening, and afterward having a juice and snack.

I will have my children with me. Is there a place for them to sit? Yes, donors may bring their children with them. There is a waiting area with tables and chairs. Coloring books and crayons are also provided.

Gener-ally, medications that are acceptable are those for high cholesterol, blood pressure, diabetes, allergies, replace-ment hormones (estrogens, thyroid hormones, etc.) and most anti -inflammatory drugs. Other medica-tions may also be acceptable. It is rec-ommended that you bring a list of medications you are taking to review with the Heartland staff. You may also contact Heartland beforehand at (630) 892-7055 for more specific informa-tion.
