Husband of pregnant woman stoned to death byfamily admits KILLING previous wifeTHE husband of a pregnant woman who was brutally stoned to death by her own family has admitted he murdered his first wife to be with her.

Farzana Parveen, 25, was killed by nearly 20 members of her own family outside a courthouse in Lahore, Pakistan, in broad daylight.

Ms Parveen was on her way to court to contest an abduction case her family had filed against her husband, Mohammad Iqbal.

But in a shock confession, the 45-year-old today admitted that he strangled his first wife so that he could marry Ms Parveen.

Mr Iqbal told AFP: "I was in love with Farzana and killed my first wife because of this love."

He said that he was spared prison because his son, who reported the murder, later dropped charges against him.

He refused to say anything else and hung up the phone on the reporter.

Mr Iqbal had also claimed that Ms Parveen's older sister, Rehana, was poisoned by her family in an apparent honour killing after her father argued

with her parents-in-law.

Ms Parveen's stepson, Muhammad Aurangzeb, supported the claim.

Their father ordered Rehana to leave her husband but she refused, according to The Times.

Mr Iqbal, who has five children from his previous marriage, was furious with the police earlier this week

for apparently doing nothing as Ms Parveen was killed by her family.

Ms Parveen's father was arrested on murder charges straight afterwards, police investigator Rana

Mujahid said, adding that police were working to apprehend all those who participated in this "heinous

crime."

Mr Azeem, who called his daughter's murder an "honour killing" surrendered immediately, according to police.

All other suspects have disappeared.

Mr Mujahid quoted the dead woman's father as saying: "I killed my daughter as she had insulted all of our family by marrying a man without our

consent, and I have no regret over it."

As she arrived at the court, however, nearly 20 members of Ms Parveen's extended family were waiting, including her father and brothers.

As the couple walked towards the court gate, the group fired shots in the air and tried to snatch Ms Parveen, her lawyer said.

When she resisted, the group began to beat her, before eventually pelting her with bricks from a nearby construction site, according to her husband

and lawyer.

Pakistani Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif demanded to know why police apparently stood by, his spokesman said today.

Yesterday, Foreign Secretary William Hague said he was "shocked and appalled" by the incident and urged the Pakistan government to "do all in its

power to eradicate this barbaric practice".
