Specifications

Service Classifications:This guide provides a convenient single-source listing ofMarine Transmissions. All sizes and gear ratios current-ly available are listed. Models are grouped under themain headings of drive configuration for pleasurecraft,light-duty commercial, and heavy-duty commercialapplications. You will find all of these terms defined inthis section.

Pleasure craft: Full throttle used approximately 5% oftotal running time. Typical cruising is at 80% or less ofmaximum rated engine speed. Engine running time is400 or less hours per year. Applications in boatsdesigned as pleasure craft and used for commercial use,such as charter boats or party fishing boats, are consid-ered light duty commercial applications.

Light Duty Commercial: Full throttle used approxi-mately 5% of total running time. Longer running periodswith throttle setting at 75% or less of maximum ratedengine speed. Engine running time is up to 1500 hoursper year. Light duty commercial applications includesport fisherman boats, party fishing boats, crew boats,search and rescue boats and patrol boats.

Heavy duty commercial: Full throttle used up toapproximately 5% of total running time. Longer runningperiods up to 80% of maximum rated engine speed.Engine running time is up to 2500 hours per year. Heavyduty applications include towboats, heavy supply boats,ferries and offshore fishing trawlers.

Rating Advisory: The horsepower ratings shown onthis chart are at specific engine speeds. At the maximumtransmission input speeds, higher horsepower ratingsare available.

Important Notes:System torsionals: System related noises or vibra-tions can occur at low engine speeds. They can causegear rattle and result in damage to the boat engine aswell as the transmission. Boatswain’s Locker is notresponsible for total system-related torsional of this type.

Lubrication: Dexron IIE, Dexron III, or any transmis-sion fluid which meets Detroit Diesel Allison C-4 speci-fications are recommended for use in all transmissions.

Applications: Matching of engine, transmissionmodel, transmission ratio and propeller size is impor-tant. The combination must allow the engine to obtainmaximum rated engine RPM.

In-LineThe Velvet Drive “71” and “72” designations indicate input horsepower ranges. There are two basic configurationsof transmissions in the 71 and 72 ratings. The most popular model is the in-line unit. “In-line” indicates that theinput and output shafts of the transmission are on the same axis.Direct drive versions of the in-line models are frequently used on high horsepower, light weight boats. The reduc-tion ratio versions use an additional planetary gear set to allow the use of larger propellers for greater pulling powerat lower shaft speeds.

V-DriveThe Velvet Drive V-Drive marine transmission is a compact, self-contained unit that helps create extra cargo andcabin space by allowing you to move your engines further aft. Because the V-Drive requires no universal joints, apotentially costly maintenance item is completely eliminated.

The deeper offset of the Velvet Drive V-Drive marine gear allows easy propeller shaft alignment for quick, simpleinstallation. A series of reduction ratios is available. Opposite propeller rotation can be provided for twin engineapplications with two engines of like rotation.

SpecificationsThe Series 5000 Down Angle transmission is specifically designed for twin engine applications that require nearlyhorizontal engine installation. Its full reversing feature eliminates the need for opposite rotating engines, while the8o “down angle” eliminates the problems that result from extremely steep engine installation angle. An improvedhydraulic system provides more engine torque to the propeller. New design features such as an hydraulic pump andcontrol valve make service easier. The control lever and dipstick are centrally located. Additionally, an optional SAE“A” auxiliary pump drive mounting is available on the rear of the Series 5000 transmission. Like all Velvet Drivemarine transmissions, the Series 5000 accepts standard damper assemblies, flywheel housing adapters and propellershaft couplings.

The Velvet Drive Marine Series 5000V is the latest member of the Velvet Drive transmission family. The Series 5000Vis designed specifically for V-drive applications. Its fully reversing feature allows for a twin-engine layout usingautomotive rotating engines, while the 12 degree down angle between the input and output shafts allows the desiredsystem installation. The coupling flange, located on the opposite side to the engine and hollow output shaft, pro-vides position and ease of propeller shaft alignment. The compact design and aluminum case provide a lighter andconsiderably shorter package than the 70 Series V-Drive. The improved hydraulic system, with reduced parasiticlosses, offers more power to the propeller. The Series 5000V has the same engine adaption features as the 70 Seriesand Series 5000 Down Angle.

Operational Notes for HBW Engine Gearbox CompartmentCare should be taken that the engine gearbox com-partment is properly ventilated.

Initial OperationFill the gearbox with oil (ATF) of the recommendedgrade. The oil level should be up to the index mark onthe dipstick (see illustration)

To check the oil level, just insert the dipstick, do notscrew in. Retighten the hex screw with the dipstickafter the oil level check. Do not forget sealing ring.

Sailing and moving in towRotation of the propeller without load while the boat issailing, being towed, or anchored in a river, as well asoperation of the engine with the propeller stopped (forcharging battery), will have no detrimental effects onthe gearbox.

ImportantWhen the boat is sailing (engine stopped), the gearlevel must be in zero position. Never put the gear leverin the position corresponding to the direction of travelof the boat.

Locking of the propeller shaft by an additional brake isnot required; use the gear lever position opposite yourdirection of travel for this purpose.

Lay-up periodsIf the transmission is not used for periods of more than1 year it should be completely filled with oil of thesame grade to prevent corrosion. Protect the inputshaft and the output flange by means of an anticorro-sive coating if required.

Possible troubles and remedies
