From the 10th to the 21st July 2009 14 boys and 4 members of staff went to Zambia to coach Tag Rugby to underprivileged youngsters from schools around the capital, Lusaka. We were able to do this through the charity Tag Rugby Development Trust, who carry out similar programmes all around the world, developing grass roots rugby. Over the week the Hurstmere pupils coached in four government run schools: City of Hope; Chillanga; Guard-ian Angels and Musamba. The coaching was carried out over four days with two of the schools being taught in the morning at two different sites and the other two being taught in the afternoon. In each school the boys taught 2 classes of approximately 75 pupils meaning that a total of around 600 Zambian children were taught the game. On the 5th day 20 pupils form each school were chosen to represent their school and each school had two teams entered into a tournament. The winners of the plate competition were City of Hope II and the winners of the Cup competition were Musamba I. The aim of the tournament was not to find the best talent but rather to create a spectacle. Almost 1000 children from the 4 schools and others from the local community came to watch the event and it is hoped that the enjoyment gained form the experience will encourage more youngsters to take part in tag Rugby in the future. One of the main focuses of the week was for the coaches to involve the Zambian School teachers in the sessions as much as possible. It was felt that for the sustainability of the project it was imperative to get the teachers involved so that they gain an understanding of the game in the hope that they will carry on teaching when the programme finished. Many of the teachers were happy to join in and they quickly gained a good understanding of the basic concepts. On the day of the tournament all of the teachers were invited to play a spectacle game,

much to the amusement of their pupils. Each school was left with equipment so that the game can be continued. Hurstmere School is incredibly grateful to the Tag Rugby Development Trust for giving its pupils a life changing experience and we are already in the process of arranging another visit to Zambia in 2011. We would like to give particular thanks to Trevor Martingel from the Charity, for the hours of time and effort he gave to allow the trip to go ahead Congratulations to the 14 Hurstmere students who raised the £10,500 in sponsorship to fund the trip.

Hurstmere would also like to give enormous thanks to the following people without whom the trip would not have been possible: Baobab College for their help with transport, accommodation, school contacts, catering and general hospitality; Darius Chanda for translating and refereeing/ coaching expertise; the parents and friends of the boys who went who helped raise the money; and Gilbert for the supply of kit.

RJ Ride Guide visited the School in June providing a dramatic display of Mountain Bike skills and a talk on safety. Rich Johnson, who has appeared on “Britain’s got talent” and does stunt work, showed the boys how to use a bike in various manoeuvres which became progressively more difficult. Safety was the greatest consideration, and Rich was seen to continuously emphasise the importance of riding safely.

Hurstmere boys continue to do sterling work in supporting the Hurstmere School Sports Partnership and also benefit from completing their Sports leaders Awards. A group of boys went to Old Bexley Primary School around Easter time, and on a very cold day ran an Outdoor and Adventurous Activities Festival for years 4, 5 and 6. It was a lot of hard work but the pupils from the school thoroughly enjoyed themselves, and the boys from Hurstmere gained the experience they needed to complete their Leaders award. Some boys also helped out at the Partnership Games held at

Hurstmere in July along with Leaders from other secondary schools, and a group of boys also completed the annual trip to Wales with Ms Allsop and Mr Wright as part of their leadership de-velopment.

Hurstmere’s Year 7 and Year 9 Cricket teams completed an excellent “Double” by winning their respective North Kent Cricket Cup Finals, both against Chisle-hurst and Sidcup Grammar School. The Year 7 team fielded first and re-stricted the opposition to 85 for 3 off their allotted 20 overs and then proceeded to bat extremely well scoring 87 for 2 off of only 13.3 overs. Congratulations to the team - A. Griggs (capt), R Phillips, J Beekman, R Littlechild, G Parish, J. Bennett, A Gills, M Cooper, G Gann, T Edwards, S Verge, and M Day

The Year 9 team played Chis and Sid GS at Bexley CC. Hurstmere batted first and scored 89 for 9 off their 20 overs, which was thought not to be enough by the wor-ried Mr Davis. The bowling attack started very well and took early wickets, and eventually bowled the opposition all out for 53 runs in 16.3 overs. A great performance se-curing Hurstmere’s second cricket trophy in a week. Congratulations to the team : J Maggs, T Hopkins, M Maietta, C Jerrom, A Danks J Page, J Stevens, H Gann, H Scott, L Warren, and J Edney
