    Update: Monday Oct. 29 9:45 p.m.

Branford Assistant Fire Chief Shaun Heffernan said all Branford crews and residents are safe as of 9:45 p.m. They've been responding to many calls th

evening due to Sandy's strong winds, which have taken down trees and powerlnes all over Branford.

At 9:45 p.m. there was no access to Indian Neck with flooding on Indian Neck Avenue and Meadow Street at Paul's Wire Rope and also at Limewood

    Avenue making passage impossible.

An 86-year-old woman was in stable condition after a tree fell on her on East Main Street this evening, said Heffernan.

Rosenthal Gardens, a senior housing facility at 63 Kirkham Avenue was partially evacauted when a tree fell on it this evening, Heffernan said. Twelve

apartments were evacuated; half of the residents went to the Branford High School Shelter.

Heffernan said his message to residents: "Stay off the roads. Dont got out and sight-see. Let the utilities companies and public works get out and do

    their jobs."

Heffernan said that also means on Tuesday as crews clean-up.

Nearly 100 people and 15 pets seek refuge at Branford Shelters during Sandy.

Branford Park & Recreation Director Alex Palluzzi said he spoke with First Selectman Anthony Unk DaRos who said theres no way to drive from stree

to street around Branford without having to make a detour.

Palluzzi, who has been helping organize the sheltering of residents, said there are about 50 people at Branford High School and 36 at Mary T. Murphy

School seeking refuge. There are also seven dogs and four cats at Murphy school.

The majority of residents came to the shelters between 5 and 8 p.m. when the weather seemed to be the worst.

There are more than 75 cots available. If you decide to use the shelter, please review the sheltering guide attached here.

About five elderly residents were relocated to Branford High School Shelter Palluzzi said, after a tree fell on their residence, Rosenthal Gardens, which

located at the corner of Kirkham and Main streets. The tree ruptured a gas line and some of the residents were evacuated. No one was injured during

    the incident.

The Community Dining Room was able to serve beef stroganoff to residents Monday night. East Shore Health District has also been visiting shelters to

    ensure safety.

Police have been visiting the shelters every hour on the hour, said Palluzzi.

    Update: Monday Oct. 29 8:30 p.m.

Branford Fire Department has confirmed that a tree has fallen on a victim.

The Branford Fire Department has confirmed that a tree fell on one person in Branford during the height of Sandy's wind this evening, which kicked up

around 5 p.m. as the storm made landfall in New Jersey. At this point, the status of the person is unknown. The person was transported to a nearby

    medical facility from the scene.

We are hearing from residents along the shoreline that waters are continuing to rise; high tide is due in around 11:30 p.m.

There will be plenty of time to submit photos to Patch, so for now we ask residents to stay indoors and be safe!

Again, we have limited access to power and internet at this time. Many readers have been communicating in the comments here and on Branford

Patch Facebook to help each other out and check on the safety of family and friends.

Please be smart residents and stay indoors. Also allow the fire and police departments to get out and do what they need to do without interference.

    Update: Monday, Oct. 29 5 p.m.

Branford fire officials are reporting to incidents all over town right now. Trees and wires are down, according to various reports. The Police Departmentis now running on a generator. Currently we have little acccess to Internet and the Branford Fire scanner does not appear to be online for us. You can

try to check out their Twitter feed here.

Many readers have shared the location of their outages on Branford Patchs Facebook Page.

Stay indoors, readers! Dont assume that if a wire is down, the power is off.

Around 3:30 p.m. today, wires came down in Pine Orchard hitting a gold Volvo blowing the sunroof off the car according to scanner reports. The car

was unoccupied. The wires were still live around 4 p.m. No one was injured.

Official CL&P outage reports don't seem accurate at this time. Please stick with Patch for updates.

If you see wires or trees down let is know so we can update the map above. E-mail [email protected] or text 203-812-0866 or comment here.

    Please be safe readers.

Branford Hospice facility has been evacuated; many coastal roads are closed. Schools closed additional day, Weds., Oct. 31.

Today around 1:30 p.m. Branford Fire Department evacuated all Hospicepatients, bringing them to St. Raphaels and Yale-New Haven Hospital.

Hospice is located on Double Beach Road in Short Beach.

Assistant Fire Chief Shaun Heffernan confirmed the evacuation as a precaution. We will update you on the status of the evacuation and the patients as

soon as the information is available.

As of 2 p.m. Connecticut Light & Power is reporting five percent of Branford customers without power.

This morning CL&P spokesman Mitch Gross said they were evaluating the substation that delivers power to around 11,000 Branford residents and

those in surrounding towns. The substation could be shut down, Gross said.

Today, in a press conference, a CL&P spokesman said a portable substation is in the works to be stationed in Branford if need be. CL&P is

sandbagging the substation in Stamford where they are concerned about flooding.

Branford has two CL&P substations one on Meadow Street and one on East Main Street.

High tide was at 11:30 a.m. for Branford. Many roads were flooded during this time period and are impassable. You can see all closed roads on the ma

    above.

According to online tide charts, the next high tide is 11:51 p.m. The normal astronomical tide is six feet according to the online tide charts; Sandy is

expected to bring in several more feet of water.

Patch will be adding updates as new information is available. You can share any news and updates here in the comments or contact

    me:[email protected] ; 203-812-0866.

At 2 p.m. today, many reserves were stationed at the Armory in Branford on Montowese Street.

Branford Public Sschools will be also closed on Wednesday, October 31. "Given the evolving situation it is the intention of the District to notify

parents/guardians prior to widespread impact from Sandy, particularly if communications become limited. Safety remains our greatest concern,"

Superintendent Hamlet Hernandez said in an e-mail today.

Schools are also closed today, Monday, Oct. 29 and Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Big Y in Branford is open - scheduled until 10p but may close earlier. They still had the small propane tanks for camping stoves. Fresh breads

bakery was open. Coastal was still open about an hour ago. Boat Ramp was starting to flood.

Hi Nicole. I walked down Linden Ave towards South Montowese around 1:30 and noted many storm drains were completely covered with leaves. Iuncovered a few throwing the debris on higher ground, hopefully far enough away from it returning to drains. If people are out, check the drains and

clear them-it's a small way to reduce water build up on roads. Be safe!

Thank you Tina! Please be safe. The PWD was most concerned about those drains and the leaves continuing to clog. Any help to clear after

storm would be great too. Thanks again Tina!
