Our 2019 theme has been a good reminder of how our relaonship with God changes how we see the world; and of how the giſts that God has given to us free us from the chains of this world, freeing us to live and love God and one another. We look at how God’s call, word, love, grace, and hope, along with worship, sacraments, and Service in Christ’s name Change Everything! As we move into October, our theme specifies how Stewardship changes everything. It is a reminder to all of us, that all we have is not ours- but God’s. That can be a hard reminder to absorb and fulfill. It seems that we thank God for our financial blessings, but when we are asked to share them, we turn away and say we don’t have enough to share. We see many stories in the bible of God reminding us that we have been called to share our blessings, whether it was leaving 10% of the fields unharvested so that the widows and the poor could be fed, or giving the best of the livestock to be sacrificed back to God. So, why do we give an offering to God, if it is all God’s to begin with? Well, we give back to the church as a way to thank God. Through being good stewards, we return a poron of the me, talent, and treasure alloed to us. Stewardship engenders a spirituality that deepens our relaonship with the Lord. This Changes Everything!

Stewardship Changes Everything!

Our 2019 theme has been a good reminder of how our relationship with God changes how we

see the world; and of how the gifts that God has given to us free us from the chains of this

world, freeing us to live and love God and one another. We look at how God’s call, word, love,

grace, and hope, along with worship, sacraments, and Service in Christ’s name Change

Everything!

As we move into October, our theme specifies how Stewardship changes everything. It is a

reminder to all of us, that all we have is not ours- but God’s. That can be a hard reminder to

absorb and fulfill. It seems that we thank God for our financial blessings, but when we are asked

to share them, we turn away and say we don’t have enough to share. We see many stories in

the bible of God reminding us that we have been called to share our blessings, whether it was

leaving 10% of the fields unharvested so that the widows and the poor could be fed, or giving

the best of the livestock to be sacrificed back to God.

So, why do we give an offering to God, if it is all God’s to begin with? Well, we give back to the

church as a way to thank God. Through being good stewards, we return a portion of the time,

talent, and treasure allotted to us. Stewardship engenders a spirituality that deepens our

relationship with the Lord. It involves intentional, planned and proportionate giving of our time,

talent and treasure.

This week your pledge card will be mailed to you. I urge you to take time to pray over how you

will bless the church with your gifts. We are doing amazing ministry here at Lutheran Church of

the Cross, but your help is needed for it to continue and thrive.

On Wednesday, October 9th we will be collecting pledge cards during worship and also on

Sunday October 13th during our Stewardship Breakfast between our worship services. Come

and see how “This Changes Everything!: Stewardship Changes Everything!”

Blessings,

Pastor Drew

FROM ZACH'S DESK:

On the first week of High School Youth Group this fall, we really did some amazing work together. The second week [last night from the time I am writing this thought] was no different.

I tasked the group, week 1, to build a covenant, or an agreement, together. They did the hard work and created something really special. I want to share it with you. To break the ice, I suggested the first line, they crafted the rest. It was about a twenty minute conversation, and they walked away proud of their work.

Our 2019 High School Youth Group Covenant: 1. Light a Candle.

2. Show up.

3. Be present (phones away/silent).

4. Have fun!

5. Talk about church-y/Jesus-y stuff.

6. Pray.

7. Be respectful.

8. Don’t be afraid to share your opinion.

9. Ask questions. Go tell it on the Mountain!

I’m going be honest. It’s kind of a tough covenant to follow. Sometimes when we get a little too goofy, we miss the mark. Our phones may buzz and we may check it out of habit, or simply, I may check the time. We definitely always have fun and pray. Sometimes we are scared to offer our opinions, out of fear of being judged. Maybe, our activity went too long and we didn’t have time to slow down and talk about “Jesus-y stuff”. And maybe, we had a tough week, and need someone to share their light with us.

I think our real world is like this. too. We have a set of things that we want to be like, and a lot of those things are listed in this covenant.

What happens when we really aim for these things? When we really try our best? How will the world benefit? How will our families benefit? How will our friends benefit?

Week after week, we will try to uphold our covenant. Week after week, we will

collectively fail. And thank goodness, week after week after week, we will be loved by

God and saved by redeeming grace. And then we get to try again.

In peace, Zach Malecha

October 2019

What is “Liturgy”? and “The Nunc Dimittis”

Liturgy refers to the form or order of service which we use in our Christian worship services. The liturgy we use today is derived from the German Mass that Martin Luther published in 1526. It followed the form of the Catholic Mass. It was designed to give order to the service, but not intended for all parts to be used at all times. The German Mass was completely chanted, except for the sermon. The function of the mass according to Luther was to make the people hear the word of the Lord. It was translated from Latin, the language used for the Catholic Mass, to German to enable the “common” people to understand the word.

This month of October we will focus on the “Nunc Dimittis” or Song of Simeon. This originated from Luke 2. Mary, Joseph and the baby Jesus were in the temple of Jerusalem to present their firstborn male to be blessed by the LORD. Simeon, as described in Luke, was “righteous and devout” and was “guided by the Holy Spirit” to enter the Temple to see Jesus. He took Jesus “in his arms and praised God, saying, ‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace, according to your word; for my eyes have seen your salvation, which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples, a light for the revelation to the Gentiles and for glory to your people Israel.’”

The Nunc Dimittis is generally used for an evening service or compline. We have used this in our evening Lenten service “That You May Have Life”, written by Marty Haugen. It is also appropriate to sing this either after the Lord’s Prayer or as a blessing at the end of Sunday worship. That is the context we will be singing this in October.

We will use the version by Marty Haugen from That You May Have Life; Hymn 313 “O Lord, Now Let Your Servant”, a Finnish folk tune; Hymn 200 “Now, Lord” from the Detroit Folk Mass written by Tillis Butler and James Harris; and Hymn 202 “Now, Lord” written by Russell Schulz-Widmar We hope you find these a meaningful part of our worship service.

A Message from our ELCA Global Missionary

Russian Correspondent

Pastoral Care and Mental Illness Staraya Sarepta (Volgograd), Russia After concluding the first full course of Clinical Pastoral Education in Russia in 2018, Pastor Kurt Juergen Schmidt and I worked on planning for the next steps in the evolution of this ministry in the Russian context. We determined that 2019 would be used for a course of continuing education for those who have a basic background in pastoral care to be followed by a planning session with local leaders about what would be most helpful in the long term. With that in mind, Kurt and his assistant Pastor Anna Christ-Friedrich came at the end of April to Volgograd to lead a week-long course on pastoral care and mental illness. Participants from the Far East, Siberia, the Volga region and Crimea prepared case studies and worked with these very experienced CPE supervisors to help them develop in this very difficult aspect of ministry (in a context where there are very serious problems with care for mental illness). Immediately afterwards I joined others involved in the development of the ministry for a days worth of meeting to assess what has been accomplished, to clarify our goals, and to make concrete plans towards reaching them. The result was the determination to start a new cycle of basic classes starting in 2020, and to supplement them by annual seminars on special issues in pastoral care. The former will be concentrated in one region (the Volga deaneries) at first, while the latter will be open for church-wide participation. We hope to involve new, younger and local teachers as time goes on. There have been and will continue to be challenges in coordinating calendars and in matters of financing, but feedback from the participants – who witness to improvements in their own lives and in the way they are able to serve their congregations and their neighbors – points to the effort being worth it. Your brother in Christ, Bradn

Pastors’ Reports Senior Pastor’s Report – Pastor Drew Bakken

A lot has happened during the month of August and the beginning of September. The congregation has approved unanimously the offer from the County and State for the purchase of a new right away going east to west on the south side of our property. We will be paid $74,000 for purchase of the land. Our next steps will be to start talking to contractors and getting estimates. We will be having a church property clean up weekend on October 10th-13th to move the retaining wall block from the around the bell tower, clean up the grounds, give a good cleaning to the inside of the church so that we can be ready for the Winter activities in the church.

Special thanks to Kari and Sally for the decorations and preparation for Rally Sunday. It was a wonderful Sunday gathering and celebrating a new academic year in the life of the church.

The new sound system has been installed in in celebration center and new receivers for the wireless headsets for the sanctuary as well. We had a great kick off for WOW (Worship on

Wednesday), and the band sounded wonderful. The property cleanup has begun. Special thank you to the Brandangers, Malmquists, and

Ruschs along with Clint Baker for trimming up the pine trees along our parking lot and back driveway and hauling the branches to the burn pile. We hope to have the pile burned by the end of the week.

Fall Rummage sale in soon upon us and preparation are staring to be put into place. What a wonderful ministry that we have for our congregation, community, and for the non profit organizations that benefit from this sale.

Stewardship is on the horizon and we are working on the breakfast once again. We are working on the letter that will go out to the congregation, pledge cards, volunteers to help cook and serve, and set up in celebration center.

Fall is here and we are on our way. Thank you for your time and energy that you give to the ministry here at Lutheran Church of the Cross.

Thank you to Shawn Hanson and Kids Against Hunger for organizing the packing event for our brothers and sisters in the Bahamas. Thank you to all the LCC members for packing.

I continue to enjoy serving on the Bridges of Hope Board and Lutheran Social Services Board of Minnesota. Both organizations are in a time of transition. Bridges of Hope has hired a New Executive Director. Her name is Bernadette Foh and she started in the middle of September. Lutheran Social Service will be starting the process of hiring a new CEO as Jodi Harpstead has been tapped by Governor Tim Walz to be the Commissioner of the Department of Human Services. Both boards are an extension of our work together in serving our community. Thank you for the opportunities to serve.

narthex for the month of October. LCC Foundation Update:

We remembered, praised and acknowledged the commitment & legacy of Randy Perkins leadership while serving on LCC Foundation Committee.

Tim Bergin provided a financial report. The Foundation agreed to financially support the Global Mission Team to provide the

ingredients for packing 4,000 meals at Kids Against Hunger. Appointed Pastor Drew as the new Foundation Chair, and Craig Fink as Vice-Chair. Foundation members will have a presence in the Information Desk area in the narthex for

the month of May, 2020. We are looking for new members to join the Foundation Committee. Please see Pastor

Drew or Craig if interested. Next Meeting is Monday, October 7th at 4 pm.

Property – Jason Martinson

Lyle Amundsen has been tasked with finding us appropriate solutions for video surveil-lance. He and Pastor Drew were also planning to your Bethlehem Lutheran Church to check out their video system to get ideas for the Celebration Center.

There will be a fall Committee meeting in the coming weeks.

Children and Family Ministry – Pam Johnson

We had a GREAT week at Luther Crest - thanks to our Council and Rummage Committee for helping sponsor our kids. It's such a valuable week of Christian fellowship and growth that can't be caught anywhere else!

RALLY DAY was a success - again, thanks for support from the staff and Council who truly lived out their faith in action that day!

We had our Route 56 parent/kid meeting yesterday. John Wallin will once again be assisting Kari on this journey. Council members are always welcome to stop in any Weds. to meet and greet the kids - and please keep this ministry in your prayers.

We kick off Sunday School on Sept. 15 with a lesson on Noah and the Great Flood. It's also the day we distribute Bibles to our 3rd graders at 10:30 worship.

We will be keeping all SS groups upstairs for the time being due to flooring issues in the basement, and if it works well, we will stay upstairs for the rest of the year.

Our co-op with Lord of Life continues to thrive, as Susan and Kari are in regular contact. We hope to keep this partnership going throughout the year.

Our next big event is Trunk or Treat on October 27th - and we strongly encourage as many of you as possible to reserve your parking space now (diagram is in narthex). Last year we had upwards of 300 kids and parents there - it's a great church family and community outreach activity. Please attend if at all possible. Helpers are always needed for popcorn, cocoa, parking help, etc.

Worship and Music – Mike Smith

Worship and Music Committee will be manning the Information Desk in the narthex during the month of September.

A new Trinity banner will be placed on the west wall of the sanctuary on Christ the King

Page 31: hurch of the ross Currents - Nisswa, MN - Home

Page 31 Sunday, November 24th. The banner was designed by Jerry Raedeke and created by Janette Paulson from Duluth (her last creative project before retirement).

Cathy Taylor is organizing a “Christmas in November” organ recital featuring organ, bells and choir on Friday, November 15 in the sanctuary.

All of the music groups (Bells of Praise, King’s Kids, and Sr. Choir) are always looking for new members. Rehearsals are on Wednesday evenings. Bells of Praise—5:30-6:30 in the church balcony; King’s Kids (grades 1-4)—6:00-6:30 in the choir room; and Sr. Choir—7:00-8:00 in the choir room. All are welcome to be part of this important ministry of our church.

Youth and Family Ministry – Jen Henry

Sept 8 is rally day! Woohoo! Sept 11 is rally Wednesday. (Back to Celebration Center worship), 7th Grade Confirmation

Orientation and High School Youth Group kick off. Sep 15 is Citywide Lutheran Youth (Name pending) This is a new group is forming for our

high schoolers that involves all of the Summer Stretch churches. Some Seniors met to lay down the plan. They will meet on the third Sunday of each month at Lord of Life Lutheran Church. Zach will attend with any of our high schoolers.

Sept 18 is 9th Orientation and 7th + 8th Small Group Night. Sept 22 is Kart Kountry afternoon for Confirmation age youth. Sept 25 is Kickball Outside Oct 6 is Rolls Sunday Kickoff! I think Sunday morning prep will be similar to previous

years. As a group, we feel this is definitely worth our time as a ministry. We feel we need to make the youth accountable and make it a requirement to do a certain number of volunteer hours or Rolls Sundays, as It keeps them involved and then they figure out that they truly do enjoy it.

Nov 2 is Hotdish and a Show! Our previous years’ cook has chosen not to cook this year. Zach has reached out to a new member to gauge his interest. Seems interested but is work-ing on his schedule. If this happens, we will need someone to be his assistant in the kitchen - someone who can show him around and stuff and know where everything is. We plan to fundraise as we have the last two years, make about $4000 and split it between camp and mission trip.

We don't have a mission trip destination set yet for 2020. There are lots of factors and it could go many ways. It's our Mission trip year (2021 is National Youth Gathering, 2022 will be high adventure again). Next year for the National Gathering we will have to register everyone by mid-September.

Adjourn / Closing Prayer – Pastor Drew

Next Meeting(s): Council Meeting, Thursday October 10th, 7:00 p.m.

All are welcome at Council meetings. Approved minutes and approved financial reports are available in the church office to any member upon request. If you would like to have some-thing on the Council meeting agenda, please submit it in writing addressed to Interim President Paske and delivered to the office manager in the church office no less than one week prior to the monthly Council meeting, the council meets the second Thursday of the month. If the request is submitted less than one week prior to the next Council meeting it will be addressed at the following monthly meeting.
