WHAT IS ECONOMICAL RECYCLING?
Recycling benefits the economy by also reducing expenditures.• As more items are reduced, the amount of waste that needs to go
to the landfill or incinerator is also reduced. Through recycling, communities can save on their waste disposal costs (eg. landfill costs), which can be very expensive. In addition, through the sale of the recycled materials, communities can also offset the cost of their waste disposal, thereby further reducing their expenditure.
• Subsequently, acres and acres of landfill space can be saved, and be diverted for other uses. In countries where land is scarce, saving on landfill space could mean savings by the million, and in fact earnings, if the land can be used for other revenue-generating functions.
• With recycling, everything can be used to its maximum potential. Nothing is wasted. Such cost-effective practices not only saves money, but the environment and our resources too.
• Evidently, recycling benefits the economy and beyond!

WHAT IS ENVIRONMENTAL RECYCLING?

Packing your own lunch in reusable containers not only reduces waste, but also saves loads of your hard-earned cash. The average American worker spends $37 per week on bought lunch, adding up to $2,000 a year (there's that pay increase you've been looking for).
When you do eat out, try to choose restaurants that package food in reusable or easily-recyclable containers, such as plastic #1 or #2 containers, rather than hard-to-recycle foam boxes.
WAY TO GO FORD!
Each 2012 Ford Focus electric contains approximately 22 post-consumer recycled plastic bottles in its seat fabric.“On an average car we use about 300 pounds of plastic,” Angela Harris, Ford biomaterials research engineer, told Earth911. “So, there are a lot of opportunities there to increase the overall bio content and recycled content. We have accomplished a lot, but we’re going to keep it going.”

WHAT IS SINGLE STREAM RECYCLING?Single-stream (also known as “fully commingled” or "single-sort") recycling refers to a system in which all paper fibers, plastics, metals, and other containers are mixed in a collection truck, instead of being sorted by the depositor into separate commodities (newspaper, paperboard, corrugated fiberboard, plastic etc.) and handled separately throughout the collection process.
In single-stream, both the collection and processing systems are designed to handle this fully commingled mixture of recyclables, with materials being separated for reuse at a materials recovery facility.
What is my ROLE?
Your role is to place all desk-side recyclables - such as fiber (newspaper, office paper and cardboard) and non-fiber (plastic bottles, steel and aluminum cans) into a single recycling container for subsequent collection, processing and remarketing.
STEP 1- OUR GOAL IS TO REDUCE HOSPITAL WASTE
In addition . . .In keeping with the zero waste commitment the Huntsman Cancer Hospital is partnering with the University of Utah and Office of Sustainability to develop zero waste across campus.
• Reducing the hospital’s consumption is crucial to begin any creation of a sustainable waste cycle. If HCH can begin to eliminate waste in the first place, the university is on the proper path toward a zero waste campus / hospital.
• Reduce is the most important factor of the 3 R’s:
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE. 65% of the material in our landfill could have been recycled
And the best part of having Single Stream Recycling is….
No More Sorting Of Your Recyclables!
STEP 2- SWTICHING FROM THE BLUE RECYCLING BIN TO A GREEN RECYCLING BINWe will still keep the “GREY BIN” for FOOD WASTE.

Bin
If you eat in your office, please discard all of your food in the GREY general waste container. Please do not put any food / liquid inside of the GREEN recycling bin!
STEP 3- YOUR ROLE IN RECYCLING• Empty your own Recycling
Bin.• Take it to your
departmental central collection station.
• Keep your bin fresh and clean.
I keep my physical environment clean and organized, for the safety and comfort of our patients.
What do you consider as trash?? Where will I put my general trash now??
• Food, Glass Bottles, Grocery Bags
Our new recycling system gives us a unique opportunity to remove a large amount of waste from the landfill.
There will be centrally located and well labeled trash receptacles for your trash.
The great news is, the majority of office waste will be recyclable.
We appreciate your cooperation in placing what little “trash” you have into the appropriate receptacle.

STEP 7- TO SINGLE STREAM COMPACTOR
An Environmental Service Employee will toss the recycling into the compactor.
Rocky Mountain Recycling’s Transportation Team will also be responsible for picking up our compactor in case Ace cannot.
According to their supervisor, they are a great group of drivers and are committed to servicing all their customers.
They are hard-working, punctual and dedicated to taking care of our concerns in a safe and timely way.
STEP 8
The Single Stream Recycling container is picked up by ACE Disposal Services at our hospital. Their truck goes directly to Rocky Mountain Recycling.
STEP 9- RECYCLING PROCESSRMR is a full service recycling center. Purchasing, collection, processing and brokerage of all metals, recyclable paper, and plastic.
FACT:Rocky Mountain Recycling processes more than 45,000 tons of recyclable materials each month.
All kinds of paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum and other metals.
Recyclable items are unload and ready to be sorted and turned into new products.STEP 10-
What types of Recycling Equipment do they use?

Once our materials are there, Rocky Mountain Recycling (RMR) loads up the materials onto a sort line where everything is sorted thoroughly multiple times.
STEP 11 – SORT LINE
STEP 12 -SORTINGMACHINE
The brand new, $7 million single-stream sort system takes all of the recyclables from one big pile, and sends them into the bins where they belong.

Machinex Single-Stream Recycling Solutions are always custom-engineered to maximize output based on the customer’s specific needs:
Three-foot wide conveyor belts carry the pop bottles, beer cans, cardboard boxes and newspaper through a series of screens and sorters. Screens first pull the cardboard away; the conveyor separates different kinds of papers: shredded, newsprint and magazine.Farther along the process, milk jugs are spotted by an optical lens, and blasted into a bin. Later, a magnet plucks metal cans from the stream.

“Contaminated” Recycling
If the materials mix, Rocky Mountain Recycling cannot sell the finished bales on the market.
“Contaminated” bales end up in the landfill because the paper producers and metal smelters can’t use them.
RMR has some really strict guidelines for what they can accept, because they have to turn it into a product that can be introduced back into manufacturing. If it's contaminated, it's unusable to them. That's why a machine like this is critical!RECYCLING
Once the recyclables are sorted, they are made into bails of paper, metals, cardboard, and sent to the various mills to be turned into new products by truck or train
STEP 14- Sorting Process Completed
Once the recyclables are sorted, they are made into bails of paper, metals, cardboard, and sent to the various mills to be turned into new products by truck or train.
RMR plans to recycle everything if it is not contaminated.

What You Can Do?We’ve made recycling and the environment a key part of our 2015 goal to reduce waste. Here’s what you can do to make it a key part of your life!
There are many things you can do to help our hospital reach Zero Waste :
• Rethink your purchases and practices.
• Reduce your purchases.
• Encourage your co-workers to recycle correctly.
• Buy reused materials and when you're done with something, find someone else who wants it.
• Give your garbage a second chance.
• Get involved and help make ZW happen in our hospital.
