Jerry Kerwin remembered (page 3) Volume 34 Number 1 www.fsbgc.org Winter 2020 Hunts Park Project Nears Completion With donors providing generous support, Club officials are anxiously awaiting the completion of the $2.5 million Hunts Park renovation project. Scheduled to be completed during Spring 2020, the initial announcement of the project was made at a press conference on January 17, 2019 with First National Bank providing a $1 million lead gift. Beshears Construction is the general contractor for the project. Forsgren Inc. is providing earthwork and field prep, and Frontier Engineering is supervising turf installation. “This is an experienced construction team” said FSBGC executive director Jerry Glidewell. “We will be able to use this multi-purpose facility for baseball, football (flag & tackle) soccer and cheer” he added. The project includes several major improvements: installation of sports turf, new football bleachers and press box, remodeled restrooms, new concession, added storage, new fencing, new signage, security systems, LED lighting, new batting cage and more. Built in 1947, Hunts Park has been the home of Boys & Girls Club activities for the past 73 years. Several professional athletes have played at the facility, including: Torii Hunter, Lance Alworth, Ryan Franklin, Kevin McReynolds, Ravin Caldwell, Brett Goode, Koda Glover and Craig Gentry. College coaches who played at Hunts Park include Kodi Burns, Gus Malzahn, Barry Lunney Jr, and Mark Hutson. INFIELD TURF ADDED AT FORSGREN FIELD New artificial baseball turf is being installed at Forsgren Field located at Evans Boys & Girls Club. The turf will be part of the infield area and bullpens. The facility is owned by the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club and shared with Southside High School. Through the fundraising efforts of Rick Carlisle, Steve Forsgren, Trey Jackson and others, the turf project will make the facility more conducive for league and tournament play, especially during the rainy Spring season. Southside High plays home games at Forsgren, while Northside High uses Hunts Park. Shopping Spree – 25 Boys & Girls Club members were hosted by the JCPenney store at Central Mall for a special holiday shopping event on December 11. Each of the Club participants were presented with a $100 gift card, goodie bag and JCPenney t-shirt. Store manager Scott Piechocki and his team made it a memorable experience for everyone involved. Gov. Hutchinson Provides Grant for Club Improvements Through special authorization by Governor Asa Hutchinson to support Boys & Girls Clubs in Arkansas, the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club has received a $46,828 grant for facility improvements. The grant was part of the Arkansas Governor’s funding for 24 Boys & Girls Club organizations throughout the state. The Arkansas Alliance of Boys & Girls Clubs advocates and promotes youth programs on a state-wide level. Governor Asa Hutchinson is a former Jeffrey Boys Club volunteer soccer coach. He lived in Fort Smith during the mid- 1980’s while serving as U.S. district attorney. The funds received by the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club are being used for several items, including: new LED security lighting at Stephens and Jeffrey, new gym heater at Jeffrey, new roof guttering at Jeffrey, parking lot repairs at Stephens, vinyl cutting machine for uniforms, heater and A/C repairs at Evans and Goldtrap, a zero-turn mower, marquee sign repairs at Stephens, Goldtrap and Jeffrey. In August Governor Hutchinson appointed FSBGC board member George McGill as Chair of the Arkansas Complete County (Census) Committee. Mayor McGill worked closely with the Governor when he was serving as State Representative.

Hot Dog Tradition Continues Through Kiwanis Club

Members of the Noon Kiwanis Club celebrated the New Year with the annual “holiday hot dog luncheon” at the Boys & Girls Club on January 2. Kiwanis volunteers helped serve the meal, which has been a tradition by the Kiwanis for more than 30 years. “It’s always energizing being around the kids and staff” said Kiwanis member Terri Settle. The Kiwanis Club has sponsored Club activities since the Fort Smith Boys & Girls Club was founded in 1928. Each summer, the Noon Kiwanis Club provides a free week-long summer camp for kids at Lake Fort Smith. Kiwanis International is a partner with Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
