1 A warm welcome to all competitors to the March HKRC race weekend - the 3rd Club Championship round for 2008 - incorporating the 3rd and final round of the HKRC Winter Championship. Remember as an incentive to race the club are offering all competitors 20 extra points for signing on for race day. The club asks that all competitors help with the smooth running of the meeting by making sure that you attend the dummy grid on time – this really does help! Regular announcements will be made on the paddock public address system, so please remember to make a real effort to be to the dummy grid, with your kart, and driver on time - your attention is drawn to supplementary regulation 19. Track resurfacing plans are now at an advanced stage, and work is due to commence immediately after the race meeting. The club are seeking your help to prepare the site at the end of the day’s racing. About half an hour of your time is all that is needed to help shift tyre walls back from the track, and to help remove various other fixtures. Please can you indicate your willingness to help to race control during race day so we can get an idea of the number of volunteers we will have available thanks!! There is no race meeting scheduled for April due to the resurfacing work. The club look forward to seeing you all back in May when you will get to try out the new track – we’re expecting bumper grids so get your entries in extra early to avoid disappointment! All pit bay holders issued with a permit must clearly display this so our club stewards can make sure that all pit bays are occupied by those who paid for one. If you have paid for a pit bay and do not have a permit then please report this to race control where you can collect one. If you would like a pit bay allocation then please enquire in race control over the race weekend, or contact our competition secretary – Daphne Freeman. We still have a problem with tyres being left at the club site – Please can all the competitors make an effort and not leave tyres on site after the race weekend. The clubs aim is to have no ‘illegally dumped’ tyres to dispose of after each meeting. A means of proper tyre disposal have been put in place by the club – for the small sum of £3 per set. Please see a HKRC Official, or one of our designated Kart Traders – Spellfame Karting, SRS or StartLine Racing Motors (SRM) they will be able to dispose of your used tyres for you. Veterans Classes for Rotax 177 & ICC Remember – we now have veterans classes running within these grids, so let’s see a few more of you vets out there! If 15 competitors or more apply the Club will endeavour to run separate grids depending on time and additional constraints. So if you’re 40 year of age or over, and are interested in entering a veterans class then please indicate this clearly on your entry form. More news and club information can be found on the HKRC website www.hkrc.co.uk All have a competitive, and safe weekend’s racing! OFFICIAL NOTICES No Parking in unallocated pit bays, you will be asked to move No smoking on dummy grid Only one mechanic and driver on the dummy grid Please help the club to keep on friendly terms with the local village of Stow Longa and ensure that the speed limit is strictly adhered to through the village, and that due care is taken when leaving the site driving onto the main road. Hunts Kart Racing Club Sunday 12th January 2008

January Race ReportThe Lewis Hamilton factor was in evidence at Kimbolton circuit on Sunday 13th January 2008, with novice drivers representing over 10% of the entrants to Hunts Kart Racing Club’s Winter Championship round 1.

Half of these novices appeared in the Cadet classes and it was perhaps fitting then that of these, Lewis Taylor was highest placed on the grid for the A Final. The Cadets are a particular favourite of Race Commentator Jonathan Needham. “Kimbolton circuit with its long straights and flowing nature seems particularly suited to close Cadet racing”, he said. “The number of position changes in 10 laps, particularly at the sharp end of the field has to be seen to be believed”.

In the Comer Class, 2007 Club Champion Toby Sowery emerged victorious after a race long battle with George Russell, Tom Harvey and Charlie Savage. Russell had led for six laps until Sowery leapfrogged his way from third to first in the space of half a lap. Once in front, he forged ahead to win by over two seconds from Russell with Harvey snatching third from Savage on the last lap. As for the novices, it was Jake Sparkhall who took the honours, a day after passing his ARKS test!

The Honda Cadets may have been short on numbers, but Brad Shiner and Jack Partridge kept the crowd entertained with a ding-dong battle which saw them nose to tail throughout. In a thrilling finish Partridge just made it, edging past Shiner on the dash to the line by 0.05 seconds!

William Hillyard proved master of Junior Rotax with a lights-to-flag win.

Daniel Butcher-Lord could only slow Oliver Hodgson’s progress for a couple of laps and once ahead, Hodgson ended up a convincing Junior TKM winner.

Minimax driver Andy King looked like he might give Luke Gardiner a real challenge, but the former WTP driver couldn’t match Gardiner’s speed in the latter half of the race.

Tim Penstone-Smith was the early beneficiary of a first corner incident involving more than half the Rotax 177s. Fortunately all but one restarted. Also emerging unscathed if a little delayed, Tom Holland set about catching the leader, a process which took him till half distance. Meanwhile, Scott Clee really had the bit between his teeth and with a series of fastest laps caught Penstone-Smith on the last lap. Clee got a good run out of Kimbolton to pip Penstone-Smith to second on the line! Despite this disappointment, Penstone-Smith still had the honour of winning the first trophy in the newly formed 177 Veteran class.

Martin Goodliffe pulled off a superb move to pass Ron Stamp round the outside of Stow corner on his way to winning the 250 gearbox class. James and Jason Tucker squabbled over third until Jason spun out on lap five.

James Holman was always in command of the 125s, winning from Paul Lawson who, chasing valiantly, set fastest lap.

In Senior Rotax, Paul Walsh shadowed Marc Dawson for nine laps giving him plenty of opportunity to work out a plan of attack. Plan formulated, it was duly executed on the last lap with a confident overtake under braking into Stow. Luke Caudle survived a late challenge by Josh Parker with the latter just missing out by 3 hundredths of a second.

A disappointing grid of just 9 TKM Extremes was reduced to 8 before the start as Ben Barker pulled off on the warming up lap. The upside of the low numbers was that they all made it round Stow without incident! Adam Jenkins was untouchable with a lights to flag win and fastest lap in the process. Scott Chaney followed and Jack Kemp rescued third for himself after dropping back on lap one.

The Stupefier

Sgt. Eugene Hall, a waist gunner, had seen some of the roughest missions of 1943 including the first two

Schweinfurt missions. The Stupefier was their regular ship, until a replacement pilot & crew skilfully crash

landed it in a field near the base, after sustaining battle damage.

A replacement pilot & crew had been assigned the Stupefier to fly a mission to Anklam Germany on

October 10, 1943. During the mission, the aircraft was severely shot up, including the engine control

cables, flaps, aileron & stabilizers. The oxygen & hydraulic systems were also out. As a testament to its

durability, the flying fortress & crew continued on towards their home base at Kimbolton. After crossing

the channel & making their final approach, the pilot, Flt. Officer Wayne Maresh fired yellow flares as

a warning to other aircraft still on the runway. To avoid a collision with aircraft on the ground, Maresh

& the co-pilot skilfully flew the Stupefier above the runway & settled into a nearby field beyond the

perimeter track. All ten crew members survived the crash landing. The aircraft however, was destroyed

& condemned the following day. Unfortunately, the pilot & seven of the ten replacement crew members

lost their lives January 5, 1944, as a result of crash on takeoff during a predawn mission to Kiel, Germany.

The two waist gunners survived.

Sgt Hall is 5th from the left on the front row.

Sgt. Hall only knew that the Stupefier had crashed. At that time in 1943, the 379th base at Kimbolton

was very busy. The commanding officer, Col. Maurice Preston was sharpening the 379th’s skills for

the optimum method of combat box formation flying, maximum number of a/c in each box, stepped

altitudes, the essence of how to get the job of precision daylight bombing done & stay alive. Records

now show that the 379th Bomb Group achieved the highest tonnage of bombs with the most accuracy

and the lowest abort rate.

As the air war continued into 1944, the farmer’s daughter named Peggy, while working at the 379th

base as a Red Cross Volunteer became acquainted with several of the boys in the 379th propeller shop.

The young men from the propeller shop took it upon themselves to present Peggy with her very own

B-17 Flying Fortress model, hand made from metal salvaged from the crash landing of the Stupefier.

And that same farmer’s daughter, Peggy returned the Stupefier metal model back to the 379th

Association as a gift during a 379th reunion trip to Kimbolton, England. Now in the 8th Air Force Museum

in Savannah Georgia, the Stupefier continues to fly.

History of Kimbolton Airfield

In July the new display for the 379th Bomb Group was unveiled and throughout the weekend the display attracted a lot of interest.

The display is being done as a tribute to the aircrews and personnel that were stationed here in World War 2, and information has been gathered by a couple of the marshals in their spare time over the last 18 months.

The folder is information & articles found purely on the internet, and many many hours have been spent trying to find as much as possible about the 379th BG. Please feel free to browse through it.

As well as the articles, there are also items that have been found around the circuit and surrounding area, such as bullets, a bomb shackle and cockpit instruments. More and more things are being found and the area is likely to grow in both info and relics from the war.

If anybody can help with any information please contact: [email protected]
