Dear Parents of HBHS Oilers: This guide is designed to assist you in making class selections with your student. Our goal at HBHS is excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. If you have questions, please contact one of the guidance staff listed on the last page of this handbook.

Select your classes carefully. Schedule changes are limited to:

*English I College Prep Grade Level: 9 Prerequisite: None This rigorous course teaches students to improve their vocabulary, reading, writing, listening, speaking, and research skills that are aligned to the California Common Core Standards. This course helps students develop their higher level critical thinking skills as they study several literary genres. Students learn to use the writing process as they write and revise paragraphs and two multi-paragraph essays per semester. Reading and writing homework is assigned each week, and individual presentations and group projects that involve technology are required each semester. Students will study the chronology of American Literature from Puritanism to Post- Modernism. Students refine their mastery of higher level critical thinking skills as they complete three to four multi – paragraph essays per semester. Challenging homework, frequent writing assignments, and extensive readings outside of class are assigned on a weekly basis. Individual presentations and group projects involving technology are required each semester. CP English II to AP Language and Composition recommended grade of A both semesters

This rigorous course is designed to parallel a first year college composition and critical thinking class. With a score of three or above on the AP exam, it is possible to waive the undergraduate university English/ Composition course and/or receive units. There is a heavy workload that includes more expository and informational reading, and writing, in addition to the study of American Literature. It is expected that students come to class with a strong background in the writing and mechanics of the English language. This course will refine students’ abilities to analyze writing for its rhetorical devices. Students will sharpen their ability to write for a more specific audience and purpose. *Expository Reading, Writing, and Composition (ERWC) Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: Recommended EAP Conditionally Ready Status on SBAC Test

The ERWC aligns with the California English-Language Arts Content Standards, addresses critical reading and writing problems identified by the CSU English Placement Test Committee, and prepares students to meet the expectations of college and university faculty. *Literature and Modern Media Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: None Literature and Modern Media is an alternative class to the standard CP English 4 that meets the state standards and fulfills UC a-g requirements while covering the British Literature materials, more assessments are performance based, involving writing, media and speaking. It is offered to make the relevance of the contents and skills addressed in our CP English courses to the academic, occupational and political lives of our students more readily apparent to them. *Advanced Placement English Literature and Composition (Weighted)

Grade Level: 12 Prerequisite: Recommended AP Language and Composition with a grade of A or B CP English 3 to AP Literature and Composition grade of A both semesters This rigorous course is designed to parallel a first year college literature and composition class. With a score of three or above in the AP exam, it is possible to waive the undergraduate university English/ Humanities course and/or receive units. This course having the potential for college credit, it is significantly more difficult than a normal English course at the high school level. There is a heavy workload that includes much reading and writing. It is expected that students come to class with a strong background in writing and the mechanics of the English language. DEVELOPMENTAL READING I Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Reading levels 4.0-5.5, test scores, and teacher recommendations

Read 180 is an intensive reading intervention program designed to meet the needs of students whose reading achievement is below the proficient level. This is an effective and accelerated course, which uses six components to help students achieve success through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature and direct instruction in reading skills. The program is based on scientific research and uses continuous assessment based on technology, which provides individualized instruction and has proven results.

Read 180 emphasizes the key skills in any successful reading program: phonemic awareness, phonics, oral fluency, vocabulary and comprehension. Read 180 provides essential instruction that addresses the gaps, delays, and deficits in skills and knowledge from previous grades and uses age-appropriate

materials to help students achieve at grade level. Estimated daily homework: 30 Min-1 Hour

DEVELOPMENTAL READING II

Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Reading levels 5.6-7.0, test scores, and teacher recommendations

Developmental Reading 54D utilizes the Read 180 book Flex textbook. It is part two of the reading intervention program at Huntington Beach High School. The class is designed to meet the needs of the students reading below the proficiency level. Students are placed in this class based on their levels of proficiency. The program uses components to help students achieve success through adaptive and instructional software, high-interest literature, vocabulary development, writing instruction, and fluency practice. Estimated daily homework: 30 Min-1 Hour

READING

NOTE: Students enrolled in an ELD course must also be enrolled in English LEP (Limited English Proficient). English LEP and ELD classes are designed for those students whose first or primary languages are languages other than English. In these classes, students develop standard fluency in oral and written language in order to compete equally with students whose first language is English and in order to succeed in classes for native speakers of English.

English LEP classes follow the state curriculum and students may remain in an English-LEP/ELD level for more than one year for credit, or may be moved to higher levels as their levels of fluency increase. English LEP classes meet graduation requirements for English credit; ELD classes receive elective credit.

ENGLISH 2 LEP / *ELD 1 & 2 Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Standardized tests for non-native English speakers, and recommendation of

teacher/program coordinator. The purpose of English Language Development Enrichment and Support class (ELDE Levels 1 and 2) is to assist Long Term English Learners (LTELs) in achieving adequate progress toward academic success in their College Preparatory classes. ELDE classes assist LTELs by creating proficient English learners who are successful in mainstream educational programs. This course meets the English language development needs of identified English language learners who are at the early advanced (transitional) level. The class is communicative in nature and focuses principally on the integration between spoken and written English. Level 1 is for those who are in the class the first year; if a second year is needed, the student is enrolled in ELDE 2. Estimated daily homework: 30 Min-1 Hour

ENGLISH 3 LEP / *ELD 3 Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Standardized tests for non-native English speakers, and recommendation of

teacher/program coordinator. English 3 LEP and ELD 3 are for those non-native speakers of English who have almost native-level fluency but need additional refinement of skills in order to succeed in classes where only English is used and where the specific difficulties for non-native speakers are not addressed. Students will continue to increase vocabulary, develop writing skills and read core works of literature. English 3 LEP emphasizes the academic uses of English, while the ELD 3 class focuses on oral fluency and the specific difficulties for speakers of English as a second language. Adjustments in the LEP 3 / ELD 3 combination may be made according to student achievement with PELL coordinator approval. *This course may not be used to meet university admission requirements or for the district Academic Recognition Program. *No more than one year of ELD classes may be counted towards university admission (UC/CSU a-g requirements)

SOCIAL STUDIES COURSE SEQUENCING

*WORLD GEOGRAPHY HONORS MUN (Weighted) Grade 9 Prerequisite: Recommended grade of A or B in 8th grade English This course incorporates a basic geography course of study into the Model United Nations format. Students will represent various nations in simulated United Nations communities, which will develop resolutions that attempt to solve modern day problems. These include social, economic, and political issues. Students will learn to work together and will develop skills in the areas of public speaking, research, and problem solving. Students will also attend three local novice conferences. This course \ fulfills an elective graduation requirement and be used in fulfillment of the one year academic elective requirement of the universities. AP Human Geography is a yearlong course designed to provide students with a learning experience equivalent to one obtained in a college-level introductory course. The purpose of this course is to introduce students to the systematic study and understanding of spatial patterns and processes that have shaped human understanding, use, and alteration of the planet. Students will learn the methods and tools used by geographers to examine the human organization of space. The course is structured according to the course outline found in the most recent AP Human Geography Course Description published by the College Board. In preparation for the AP Geography examination, this course will be divided into seven units of study, which include the nature of geography, population, culture, political geography, agriculture, industry/development, and urban patterns. In addition, participation in four required local MUN conferences throughout the year will supplement the regular course of study. At these conferences students will research topics, write position papers, prepare speeches, create problem solving resolutions and represent their country in the best way possible. *WORLD HISTORY LEP/US HISTORY LEP Grade Level: 10 Prerequisite: None This class studies the development of human civilization from 1789 until the present. The class reflects the “how and why” of history more than the “what.” Topics studied, include: rise of democratic ideas; industrialization and its impact; imperialism with a case study of India; World War I and its causes; WW II and its causes and consequences. This course fulfills the district World History requirement and may be used to fulfill the UC and CSU World History requirement. This course is aligned to the state framework. The AP World History course is designed to give students a global perspective of the world and human interactions from 8000 BCE to the present. Throughout the course we will be using the five themes of world history including Economic, Social, Cultural, Political, and Environmental issues throughout all chapters of the textbook. Since this is a college level course, students will be expected to commit to a vigorous workload of reading and writing assignments. Students will also need to use their analytical and critical thinking skills to interpret documents and primary sources, make cross-cultural comparisons, understand historical and geographical context, and discuss different interpretations and historical frameworks. The concepts of continuity and change will be addressed in the themes of each unit. Estimated Daily Homework: 1 Hour-1.5 Hours

*AP ART HISTORY (Weighted) Grade Level: 10-12

Prerequisite: Recommended A or B in English and Social Science classes

The AP Art History course should engage students at the same level as an introductory college art history survey. Such a course involves critical thinking and should develop an understanding and knowledge of diverse historical and cultural contexts of architecture, sculpture, painting and other media. It also provides an opportunity for schools to strengthen an area neglected in most curricula. In this course, students examine and critically analyze major forms of artistic expression from the past and the present from a variety of cultures. While visual analysis is a fundamental tool of the art historian, art history emphasizes understanding how and why works of art function in context, considering such issues as patronage, gender, and the functions and effects of works of art. The AP Psychology course is designed to introduce students to the systematic and scientific study of the behavior and mental processes of human beings and other animals. Students are exposed to the psychological facts, principles, and phenomena associated with each of the major subfields within psychology. *ALGEBRA 1 Grade Level: 9-12 This course is a rigorous introduction to Algebra. Topics covered include, solving equations in one and two variables, absolute value and inequalities, exponents and roots, factoring, graphing linear equations/inequalities, quadratic equations, solving quadratic equations, simplifying radicals and solving radical equations, simplifying and solving radical expressions/equations, functions and relations.

*GEOMETRY Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Recommended grade of C or higher in Algebra 1 This one year course is designed for students who have completed Basic Algebra. Course studies will be Euclidean Geometry through the study of measurement, angles, perpendicular parallel lines, congruent and similar triangles, polygons, right triangles, coordinate geometry, circles, area of polygonal regions, constructions through the principles of logic, deductive reasoning, formal proof and indirect proof and volume of solid regions. Student proceeds to Algebra II/Trigonometry with a grade of A or B and goes to Algebra II with a grade of “C”. Estimated Daily Homework: 30 Min–1 Hour *ACCELERATED GEOMETRY Grade Level: 9-12 Prerequisite: Recommended B or higher in both semesters of Algebra 1 This rigorous one-year course studies Euclidean geometry through the principles of logic, deductive reasoning, formal proof and indirect proof. This rigorous course expands the concepts of Algebra 1 as well as introduces more advanced algebraic concepts. Content of the course specifically includes solutions of equations in one, two and three variables; factoring, relations and functions; rational and irrational numbers; complex numbers, quadratic equations, polynomial function, operations with functions, basic probability and statistics, graphing quadratic equations, linear equations, absolute value, quadratic integer function , polynomial functions, trig functions, exponential and logarithmic functions, graphing calculator: best fitting lines and curves, solving graphically, exponents, and logarithms; sequences and series; trigonometric functions, identities and formulae. This course provides a rigorous year of study of math in preparation for college calculus. *PRE-CALCULUS HONORS (Weighted) Grade Level: 11-12 Prerequisite: Recommended Algebra 2/Trig with a grade of B or higher

Pre-calculus Honors is a rigorous year long course that prepares the student for college calculus. Specific content includes a review of trigonometry. Other topics include induction and deduction applied to proofs, vectors, analytical geometry, functions and relations, polar coordinates, complex numbers, graphs of functions, limits, continuity, exponentials and logarithms and introduction to calculus, including derivatives. Estimated Daily Homework: 1 Hour-1.5 Hours

*AP CALCULUS A/B (Weighted) Grade Level: 11-12 Prerequisite: Recommended Pre-Calculus Honors with a grade of C or higher, or Pre-Calculus with grade of B or higher AP Calculus AB is designed to enable students to earn one semester of credit in calculus by passing the AP exam in May. The topics covered are properties of functions, limits, differential calculus, integral calculus, the epsilon-delta definition of limits, L’Hopital’s rule, velocity and acceleration on a curve, and elementary differential equations. Non-Departmental YEARBOOK Grade Level: 10-12 Prerequisite: Application Yearbook is a comprehensive course that requires students to apply real-world skills while composing a publishable, historical artifact. Students will practice working as part of a hierarchical team that is primarily student-led. They will be required to compose layout designs, identify worthwhile stories, capture aesthetically pleasing and purposeful photos, compose intriguing and well-edited articles and captions, interview students and faculty, and design concepts and covers.
