Warmest greetings to all of our hunting friends and welcome to our eighth newsletter of the

2016 hunting season

So Spring time is upon us and we have had some much needed rain Our hunters have

been having a blast and harvesting some really really great trophies We would like to

congratulate each and every one one of them on a job superbly done

We have a couple more hunts left for the season but we are hard at work on our plans for

our trip to the USA next year The guys are really excited for the shows and are really

looking forward to seeing your friendly faces next year Please see our provisional showschedule at the end of our hunting report

Monkeying around in the Kruger National Park

Our Good Friend Butch Brings a Pack of Hunters to Visitwith Somerby

Our very good friend and booking agent Butch Meilinger from Wind Gap Pennsylvania

comes to visit us every year He always brings a lovely group of people over with him for

some absolutely excellent hunts Butch has been a good friend and associate of Somerby

for a very long time

This year Butch brought over with him our other good friend Tony Sclafani as well as

hunters Rich Kolodzinzki Edgar Nethercutt Dale and Sandy Clymer and Bumpy Moyer

and Donna Costigan Please enjoy our report on their great hunts

Tony took a break from hunting for a marvellous elephant back ride

Butchs Hunt

Since we have known him Butch has harvested some truly spectacular trophies This year

Butchs hit list included a hippo and a tsessebe Butch pulled off his hunts with aplomb and

added two more excellent trophies to his already impressive list

Butch took his hippo with a crossbow - the world record hippo taken with a crossbow

What a great achievement

Tonys Hunt

Tony has been a good friend of Somerby for many years He hunted with us for the first

time in 2010 and hes been back to see us many times since then

On this hunt Tony was here to hunt two members of the Dangerous Seven - a Cape

buffalo and a hippo Tony had been dreaming about his hippo for years and we were all

super excited for him when he took the big fat beast down His buffalo hunt was just as

exciting and Tony headed home with some truly fantastic additions to his trophy room and

some more memories that will last a lifetime

In between hunting Tony did a spot of bird shooting with Butch and went to see some

elephants interacting with the gentle giants and even going for an elephant back ride

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR VISITING US AGAIN TONY WE ARE SO HAPPY THATYOU FINALLY GOT YOUR BIG FAT HIPPO AND WE DONT HAVE A DOUBT THAT WEWILL SEE YOU AGAIN SOON



Richs Hunt

The rifle that Rich used on the hunt was a Winchester Model 70 in 30-06 Springfield and a

Leupold VariX-II 3x9 Scope Ammo used was Nosler Trophy Grade 180 gr AccuBond

bullets

The first two days of the hunt were defined by windy conditions and some very wily

animals On the third day however the hunters luck changed

On day three we started out looking for kudu During our search we spotted a few black

wildebeest The animal presented itself broadside at 150 yards and we made quick work of

him That evening a beautiful impala ram stood 100 yards away and Johan said shoot that

male The second animal of the day was mine



Day four of the hunt started with a zebra The zebra was part of a herd of a dozen animals

and after much joking around Rich got a shot at 175 yards After separating him from

another stallion a follow-up shot finished the job and Rich had his zebra Later that

afternoon Rich took a beautiful springbuck standing broadside at 75 yards

The kudu was taken in the morning on day six of the hunt They saw a small group of kudu

and one nice bull was hiding motionless in a group of small trees at 50-60 yards Rich

picked a spot through the brush and the shot hit home The bull ran about 100 yards and

they watched him fall Later that evening they took his final animal a blue wildebeest at

about a 125 yards A follow-up shot sealed the deal

Eds Hunt

Ed sent us a really lovely message along with a short account of his hunt

Somerby works hard for their clients I will be going back again to have an exciting time I

have never been treated so kindly and respectfully as I have by them Anyone looking for a

trip of a lifetime would not go wrong with this group of lovely people

Thank you Ed We appreciate your kind words

My zebra was the first animal I took The gemsbuck was the next animal that I took I

made a 186 yard shot on my blesbuck My kudu was about 230 yards away when I shot it

The Impala was 120 yards and the blue wildebeest was at 205 yards Every animal was

shot with a 308 with Remington shells Ed also took a really great red hartebeest

Dale and Sandys Hunt

Sandy had a fantastic experience harvesting her kudu and she quickly discovered why this

particular animal is called the grey ghost of Africa After numerous stalks she was finally

able to pick him out amonst the foliage he was hiding in and made a clean shot

The one animal Sandy was very excited about harvesting was the gemsbuck She made a

fantastic shot at 140 yards with her Clymers Hunter Series custom rifle and the celebration

began

Sandy also harvested a blue wildebeest red hartebeest impala 2 springbuck blesbuck

zebra and a black wildebeest







Dale had a fantastic experience harvesting a black wildebeest and came to realize how

extremely tough some of the African game is to harvest After a long and exciting chase

the animal was finally taken

The other animal that exhibited quite a bit of wariness was the blesbuck It was extremely

difficult to get close to at times but in the end provided a broadside shot at 200 yards and

was one of the nicest taken this year to date

Dale also took down a kudu red hartebeest impala and warthog

Bumpy and Donnas Hunt

We were really thrilled to welcome Bumpy and Donna to Africa for a pretty intense hunt

The couple harvested a total of 17 animals Please see below some of the great trophies

that the power couple took down together

Donna took a kudu gemsbuck black wildebeest red hartebeest impala springbuck




blesbuck and blue wildebeest

Bum and Chad Tom Jones and Friends Join Us on Safari

We met Tom through our good friend Gary Bum Woelzlein of Bums Taxidermy in Birch

Run Michigan It was with great pleasure that we welcomed Tom his son Travis and their

friends Matt Roth and Mike Kurtz for a really enjoyable safari Bum and his friend Chad

Williams also joined the group It was really great to see our friends and to make some

more lifelong friends

Tom and Travis Hunt

Tom sent us some thoughts on his hunt

Although there were six of us that went on this hunt I spent most of my time hunting with

my son Travis and our guide Charles Travis hunted primarily with his bow but did harvest

a few of the plains game animals with his rifle It will be a life long memory of the stalk we

did on his nyala kill with his bow What an experience Travis will be doing a full mount to

recount the memory

Travis also harvested a springbuck blesbuck caracal 2 kudus impala and spring hare





I was able to harvest all the animals I had on my package with my 7mm Remington Mag

rifle Although I dont hunt a lot with a rifle I shot pretty good and had a great time in the

truck Safari hunting This was something I had never experienced before and I had a great

time doing this I cant say enough about the team and memories

Tom harvested a kudu gemsbuck impala blesbuck 2 springbuck and a black wildebeest





The guys also did some wingshooting during their safari Great fun

Matts Hunt

Matt had a really great safari with Somerby harvesting some really outstanding plains

game

Matt started off the hunt with a really great blesbuck that he shot with his Ruger 7mm mag

with Barnes XTP bullets The shot was slightly misplaced at 125 yards what with Matt

being a bit jittery but the trackers did a good job in finding this amazing trophy The 7mm

mag with Barnes XTP bullets did its job again with a one shot kill at 150 yards where Matt

took down a beautiful trophy black wildebeest

PH PD helped Matt to get within 75 yards of his nice impala trophy which was easy work

for the 7mm mag PD spent time and passed up lesser trophies to help get Matt within 50

yards of his great springbuck trophy and 125 yards of his magnificent gemsbuck



Matt also took down a zebra kudu eland and blue wildebeest

WELL DONE ON YOUR LOVELY TROPHIES MATT IT WAS AN HONOUR TO HOSTYOU ON A SAFARI WITH US AND TRUST THAT YOU WILL JOIN US AGAIN SOON





Mikes Hunt

It was a really great honour to host Mike on a hunt with us He did an absolutely

outstanding job and harvested some really great trophies with his 100 grain Muzzy

Broadhead using Victory arrows

Mike harvested a kudu at 40 yards a blue wildebeest at 37 yards and a gemsbuck at 25

yards He also shot a magnificent sable at 38 yards

Mike additionally shot a blesbuck twice at 25 and 48 yards

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR EXCELLENT TROPHIES MIKE WE REALLY HOPETO SEE YOU AGAIN SOON FOR ANOTHER GREAT HUNT



Bums Hunt

Someone will never be able to redo their first African safari This past trip got as close to it

as we could ever imagine Absolutely over the top on this round

Bums main objective on this hunt was to take down a Cape buffalo

The buffalo hunt was very intense The rifle I used was a 458 LOTT with 500 grain Swift a

Frame bullets Never imagined it would be a cat and mouse type hunt Very skittish alert

dangerous and a tough animal



Bum also took down a gemsbuck eland kudu zebra hartebeest and springbuck This

took place in the Kalahari of which he has to say Beautiful country very dry and full of

game He also took a duiker

Chads hunt

Chad is a good friend of Bums and ours from Saginaw Michigan Chads main mission

was also to shoot a buffalo and he did so to great effect

Chad also harvested the following plains game blesbuck springbuck gemsbuck zebra

red hartebeest and impala



While on safari Chad also shot a giraffe - what a great trophy

We had a really great time with Bum and Chad - riding the Kalahari Ferrari eating some

delicious food and even fitting in a bit of fishing



WELL DONE ON YOUR GREAT TROPHIES CHAD WE WERE SO HAPPY TO SEEYOU AGAIN AND WE LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOU SOON

with some treats and supplies for children

girls in the office had the pleasure of

handing out the donations and seeing the

bright smiles on the kids faces Thanks

Maynard Hunts a Hyena

Our good friend Maynard from Cass City Michigan visited us for a Zululand hunt

Maynards main target was a hyena accompanied by a few other great trophies Maynard

sent us a really great account of his hunt Please enjoy

On the second day I shot a great red duiker at 75 yards with my 375 solid at the water

hole

We rebuilt the hyena blind the same day but there was nothing moving that night or the

next They ate the bait very late On the fourth day we built a new blind and relocated the

bait because of the wind and we heard them but they didnt come in We later heard

something at the bait which transpired to be a female leopard It left and we heard hyenas

then something at the bait which turned out to be a huge 200 pound male leopard eating

He ran off and we decided to try another area to sit and call Walking from blind to bait

Charles had just shone his headlamp down a trail and there he was I back-stepped about

4 paces to get a shot and dropped him at 20 yards with the 375 and Barnes Triple-Shock

X Hes not laughing any more



Two days later we went to Sodwana Bay to go deep sea fishing We caught 8 yellow fin

tuna and at least 9 bronze sharks

We next went to Gauteng where I shot a sable at 110 yards after a 200 yard stalk with

my 7mm Remington Mag 175 grain - one shot and he piled up about 100 yards later We

went for giraffe the next day We found a huge male on the hills I stalked in to about 120

yards waited for the right shot and with one shot from a 375 Barnes Triple-Shock X he

ran over the hill and piled up after a 100 yard run I also shot a small warthog a few days

later at a watering hole



After Maynard had shot his hyena they had a bit of an eerie experience

After we shot the hyena we dragged it out of the bush and went to get the truck We were

gone about 10 minutes and when we came back the leopard had tracks on top of the

drag marks Very glad he didnt take it Spooky
