letter said rules regarding the

composition of Benches and their

strength had of late not been strictly

adhered to.

India registers significant declinein under-five child mortality rate:India has registered a significant

decline in Infant Mortality Rate

(IMR). IMR of India has declined by

three points (8% decline), from 37 per

1000 live births in 2015 to 34 per 1000

live births in 2016, compared to two

points decline last year. India has

registered 90000 fewer infant deaths

in 2016 as compared to 2015.

The total number of estimated infant

deaths have come down from 930000

(9.3 Lakhs) in 2015 to 840000 (8.4

lakhs) in 2016. The gender gap

in India for child survival is reducing

steadily.

Playing of national anthem incinema halls optional: SupremeCourt: The Supreme Court on the 9th

of January made the playing of

EconomyEconomy100% FDI in retail sector: TheUnion Cabinet has relaxed rules forattracting foreign investments acrosssectors such as aviation, retail, andconstruction. This is the fourth timein the past three years that theGovernment is tweaking the foreigndirect investment (FDI) rulebook.

In asignificantstep, theCabine ton the10th of

January permitted FDI  in state-owned carrier Air India, which is upfor disinvestment. Foreign airlines orany other foreign investor can now putin up to 49 per cent in Air India, thereby making it easier for thegovernment to divest its holding inthe airline.

The Cabinet has also made it simplerfor international single-brand retailcompanies keen to set up businessin India. While 100 per cent FDI wasallowed way back in 2011 in single-brand retail, from now on they canenter India through the automaticroute rather than going throughvarious administrative ministries.

Till now, automatic approval for FDI insingle-brand retail was given only upto 49 per cent of the paid-up capital, beyond which government permissionwas required.

National logistics index: Gujarat,Punjab, Andhra best performingstates: Gujarat, Punjab and AndhraPradesh are the best performingstates in terms of mobility of goodsand eff iciency of logistics chain, according to a new ranking of statesbrought out by the government.

Launched on the 8th of January, thenew Logistics Ease Across DifferentStates (LEADS) index developed bythe Commerce and Industry Ministryand Deloitte ranked states in termsof the logistical support they providedto promote goods trade.

The ranking is based on parameterssuch as the competitiveness ofpricing, timeliness and availability ofinfrastructure and that of services, among others. It aims to encouragestates to provide the policy pushtowards improving their logistics-related infrastructure.

Karnataka, Maharashtra, Haryana,Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Telanganaand Chhattisgarh made up theremaining top 10. Assam, Bihar andJammu & Kashmir featured on thebottom of the list, owing to the lackof good transport facilities, scarcityof logistics services and bad trackrecord in timeliness.

On the global front, India’s positionin the annual World Bank’s Logistics Performance Index hadimproved to 35 in 2016, the last timethe report was published. This was ajump from the 54th spot India hadoccupied in the previous report.

World Bank pegs India’s GDPgrowth higher than FY18 AdvanceEstimates: The World Bank haspegged India’s economic growth at 6.7per cent in 2017-18, slightly higherthan 6.5 per cent estimated by thestatistics office.

6. Appointments Committee of the UnionCabinet on the 10th of January approvedSivan’s appointment, as Chairman ofISRO, who contributed immensely to thedevelopment of PSLV and GSLV rockets

The PSLV (Polar Satellite LaunchVehicle) and GSLV (GeosynchronousSatellite Launch Vehicle) are tworocket launch systems developed bythe Indian Space ResearchOrganization, or ISRO, to launchsatellites into orbit. The PSLV is theolder of the two and the GSLV eveninherits some of the technologies ofthe former in its design. The mainreason behind the advent of the GSLVis the capability to lift greater loadsinto space. While the PSLV can onlylift slightly over a ton of payload toGTO (Geostationary Transfer Orbit),the GSLV is capable of lifting more thandouble that with a rated capacity of 2to 2.5 tons. One of the main reasonswhy the GSLV has such an increasedload is its utilization of a cryogenicrocket engine for its last stage. Thecryogenic rocket engine provides morethrust than conventional liquid rocketengines but the fuel and oxidizer needsto be super cooled in order to keepthem in a liquid state.
