History and Objectives Currently, students with a GPA of 2.800 or higher may enter the Nutrition & Food Science (NFS) major at the junior level upon successful completion of 45 credits. The proposal’s objective is to:

a) Rename prerequisites to “Admission Requirements” in compliance with CUNY’s new policy; b) Amend prerequisite and major course classifications to: “Admission Requirements”, “Additional Major

Requirements”, and “Major Course Requirements” (A, B, and C below) and reduce admission/prerequisite requirements, thereby allowing qualified students to declare an NFS major as early as sophomore year;

c) Amend curriculum requirements to allow course flexibility within the “Major Course Requirements” based on the student’s academic and/or professional goals;

d) Reduce the required major courses by six credits by eliminating the current PSYCH and ECON allied health requirements (formerly “Allied courses”);

e) Allow major admissions in both the Fall and Spring semesters. 1. Proposed Changes in the Degree BS in Nutrition & Food Science This proposal describes changes in the BS in Nutrition & Food Science to conform to the CUNY directive to fold prerequisite courses into the major, revise major admission requirements, and implement progress standards. Detailed Description of the Proposed Modification(s) A. Admission Requirements (11-23.5 credits): We propose to revise admissions requirements as follows:

• allow major admissions in both Fall & Spring semesters; • reduce admissions requirements from 28 to 11-23.5 credits; • require a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.800 and a minimum 30 credits overall; • continue to allow the application via UPH/NFS’ online application.

1. Statistics, with a minimum grade of C: can be fulfilled by STAT 11300 or any other college-level Statistics course; or PSYCH 24800, SOC 24100, ECO 22100, MATH 12400, MATH 12500, MATH 12550 (Pre-Calculus), MATH 15000 or MATH 15200 (Calculus) or transfer equivalents for introductory statistics. Also acceptable: AP Exam score 4-5 in Statistics or Calculus; CLEP score of 50 in Calculus or Pre-Calculus. 2. One semester of General Chemistry with lab, with a minimum grade of C: can be fulfilled by CHEM 10000 and CHEM 10100; or CHEM 10200 and CHEM 10100; or CHEM 10200, CHEM 10400 and CHEM 10600; or transfer equivalents (e.g. CHEM 10200 and CHEM 10300); or any other college-level general chemistry lecture/lab combination. Also acceptable: AP Exam score 4-5 in Chemistry.

3. One semester of Organic Chemistry with lab, with a minimum grade of C: can be fulfilled by CHEM 12000 and CHEM 12100; or CHEM 22200 and CHEM 22300 or transfer equivalents, or any other college-level organic chemistry lecture/lab combination. Students have one opportunity to repeat each required admission course in which the grade earned was below the required minimum. Credit/No Credit grades are not accepted for these courses. B. Additional Major Requirements (17-18 credits): To remain in the major and continue to the Core and Major Course Requirements, students must successfully complete the following: BIOL 12000, 12200, 23000, NFS 131 and NFS 141 or transfer equivalents with a grade of C or higher. Also acceptable: one semester of Anatomy and one semester of Physiology from transfer coursework. Credit/No Credit grades are not accepted for these courses. Progress Standards for A, and B: Students who fail to earn the required grade for progression in A, and B above with a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8, must meet with their advisor to formulate a plan for progression. Students have one opportunity to repeat each required core course in which the grade earned was below the required minimum. If they fail to earn the required minimum grade in any core course, they must withdraw from the Nutrition major. Credit/No Credit grades are not accepted in this program. D. Major Course Requirements (24 credits) To satisfy NFS major course requirements, majors select 24 credits from a list of approved advanced major courses, offering flexibility based on student’s interests and future academic and/or professional goals. For courses required for the Major, students exempt from Admissions Requirements or major courses through approval from their major advisor do not have to make up the credits for NFS major purposes.

• Course Description:

A. Description: Students hone their speaking and listening and, to a lesser extent, their writing skills in Portuguese. The course employs a variety of materials, including literary texts, music, and cinema, alongside the traditional tools of grammar and vocabulary introduced through a textbook.

B. Writing Requirement: Students write three compositions of about 250-300 words each on topics presented in the course. Students must revise compositions and turn in a second version, with all changes/revisions highlighted or underlined. These short written assignments serve to increase both fluency and accuracy of expression.

• Rationale: (Do not remove questions) A. Nature of the proposed course:

1. If the proposed course is part of a new academic program, refer to the overall objectives of the program (i.e., on a cover sheet or Appendix)

2. If the proposed course is part of an established academic program, present a rationale that includes: a. The advantages offered by the proposal and/or the needs met by the course (i.e., student, departmental,

community, job market needs); Since 2014, the Department of Romance Languages has offered language courses in Portuguese, and this course responds to the demand of students for advanced conversation in Portuguese.

b. The way in which the proposed course relates to other courses within the department of origin; The course seeks to develop the linguistic and cultural competence of students beyond PORT 20200 in preparation for opportunities in translation, finance, technology, and other sectors.

c. The way in which the course relates to courses in other departments, divisional or interdisciplinary programs (if appropriate, possibilities for interdisciplinary use might be given); There is no overlap with other classes in other departments.

d. Justification for any substantial overlap with other courses in the college curriculum, indicating the unique/specific focus of the course proposed; N/A

e. Please specify if this course was offered as a topics or experimental course in the past and state the prefix and number. Not offered.

f. List of courses, if any, which are to be withdrawn when the new course is adopted. None.

B. The following additional information must be supplied in the special instances noted: 1. When ENGL 12000 is to be specified as a Pre- or co-requisite, the rationale must justify this in terms of the writing that

is to be done in the course. N/A

2. In the case of courses given in non-organized classes such as field work, internship, independent study, etc., an explanation must be given as to how the student will earn the credits consistent with the student effort required in

• Projected Enrollment With the growing demand for upper-division courses in Portuguese from students who have completed PORT 20200, we anticipate between 15 and 20 students will enroll in the course. It will likely be offered every other academic year (or once every three semesters).

A. Description: This course offers students an opportunity to review the grammar and syntax they have already encountered in lower-division language courses and to acquire new and more complex structures. Students use a workbook and authentic materials to hone their grammar and composition skills.

B. Writing Requirement: Students will write four compositions of about 250-300 words each. These include narration, description, and literary analysis, and must reflect an understanding of the syntactic mechanisms that ensure cohesion and coherency beyond the sentence level and throughout paragraphs.
