Chronic hunger is ongoing and long-term; it is sometimes called the invisible emergency

because millions more people die every year due to the eects o chronic hunger. But the

issue receives little media and international attention or developing solutions because the

causes are perceived as more complex.]

List fve actors that aect ood security. [Possible answers include: land and water, uel, wa-

land is mostly owned by relatively ew wealthy and powerul people or by large oreign com-

panies. Land is used to produce crops like coee, bananas, and cotton or export, becausethese crops bring in high prices in international trade.]

aDD up the scores and announce a winning team. Then oer the ollowing key points:

Globally almost 826 million people go each day without the ood their bodies need or

healthy development. This chronic undernourishment eeds a never-ending cycle o disease,

stunted growth, delayed development, and poverty.

The eects o chronic or ongoing hunger are worlds apart rom this temporary hunger.

Chronic hunger has ar-reaching impacts on individuals and their amilies and, by extension,

    on communities and whole societies.

Malnutrition is a leading cause o disease and premature death in the developing world.

Those most aected include etuses, children, and pregnant and nursing women. Their bod-

ies have the extra demands o growth and developmenttheir own, or in the case o moth-

ers and mothers-to-be, their childrens. Over the longer term, malnutrition eeds a vicious

    cycle o hunger and poverty.

It is well established that poverty is a leading cause o hunger. But the reverse is equally true:

Hunger is part o a downward spiral within households that traps amilies in poverty or

    generations.

Now, or the frst time in history, the world has what it takes to end hunger.

concluDe by noting that these acts and fgures oer just a glimpse into the issues that

people o the world ace in regard to poverty.
