Did you know, What humor is?

Humor is difficult to translate and even more difficult to interpret. For a simultaneous interpreter to draw a laugh from the audience at the same time that those hearing the original joke burst into laughter is a rare feat. An interpreter must be attentive to the purpose of the humor. Many speakers will begin a speech on a humorous note just to be clever or simply to establish rapport with the audience.

In such cases it is helpful but not indispensable for the joke to be accurately translated; the joke is merely an "opening gambit". On the other hand, jokes are sometimes used to convey a key point of the speech. In those cases, the message is more important than the humor, and it is the content of the message, not the humorous.

Moreover speakers sometimes use humor to:

revive a somnolent debate

or to break the ice when a negotiation has come to a deadlock.

. Sarcasm is irony raised to a high pitch.

If irony is like a dagger, sarcasm is more like a sword.

Puns Paronomasia, or punning, is the exploitation of different meanings of words that sound similar, e.g. "The ancient Greek maiden was tired of listening to lyres" (juxtaposition of "lyres" and "liars"). These conceits may or may not be translatable, depending on the cultural references of the two words involved

Irony, the most trenchant form of humor, is usually reserved for serious subjects. It is a way of saying in a palatable way what is almost too painful or too bitter to say in any other way. Like "deadpan humor", its effect, for both the speaker and the interpreter, depends on preserving a cool and even tone

Irony is sometimes so low-key that it is almost an "undertone" or a "sub-text" that may go unnoticed if the interpreter is not sensitive to its presence. One must also be alert to irony because an easy error for an interpreter to commit is to make a speaker sound ironic when no irony is intended.

Critique Humor is often used in various forms of artistic criticism, from literary reviews to theater, film,

or sports criticism. In this context, it requires a deft touch.

Social criticism Humor is often used for social criticism, as an alternative to outrage, indignation, or polemics, and this form of humor sometimes surfaces in speeches in international fora. A good sense of humor can be an effective instrument of social change. Here again, a light touch, in keeping with the seriousness of the problem, is called for.
