• Dr. Rhea Williamson, – HSU Dean of Research and Sponsored Programs
• Dr. John Reiss– Director, HSU Telonicher Marine Laboratory

Next Steps
MPAs - Background
• 1999 - California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) passed (part of Fish & Game code)
• Requires review of all existing Marine Protected Areas, designation of new ones
• Four regions: South, Central, North Central, and North• North Coast region the last to be incorporated• 2009-2012 – Process of discussion and review of North Coast
region MPAs• June 2012 – North Coast MPAs adopted by DFG• December 2012 – North Coast MPAs went into effect
Map of (southern) North Coast MPAs
MPAs – Baseline Monitoring
• As part of the MPA process, requirement for baseline (initial state) and ongoing monitoring of effects of MPAs
• 2007 - California Ocean Science Trust established the MPA Monitoring Enterprise (ME) to coordinate these efforts
• Humboldt State University (HSU) researchers and collaborators are currently awaiting the Request For Proposals (RFP) from the ME to conduct North Coast baseline monitoring
• Draft RFP expected early 2013, opportunity for community feedback, followed by final RFP
• Proposals due later in 2013
Purpose of this ForumWhy are we here?
Provide an opportunity for HSU researchers and collaborators to:
• Become more familiar with the concerns and priorities of Mendocino residents
• Identify additional potential Mendocino collaborators, participants, and resources for HSU monitoring efforts
• Develop the strongest possible proposals, involving local expertise and addressing community priorities
Caveats
• We have no special status (others will likely be submitting proposals)
• We are not here to support or defend the MPAs
• We are primarily interested in the science, and developing the strongest possible proposals
HSU – Progress to Date
• Made contact with numerous stakeholders in Humboldt, Del Norte, and Mendocino Counties
• Forged relationships with other researchers and organizations with experience in MPA monitoring (e.g., Dr. Karina Nielsen, Sonoma State Univ., Dr. Pete Raimondi, UCSC)
• Found additional collaborators among local tribes, agencies and consultants
• Established provisional plan for baseline monitoring proposals
Plan of Proposals
We (tentatively) plan to submit the following proposals:1. Estuaries2. Offshore (soft & rocky bottoms, canyons)3. Marine Mammals and Sea Birds4. Rocky Intertidal5. Sandy Beaches6. Shallow Subtidal/Diving7. Socioeconomics8. Synthesis and Coordination
