Background the Humber region has 8 licence areas, operated by British Dredging Ltd, Hanson Aggregates Marine Ltd, Cemex UK Marine Ltd, United Marine Dredging Ltd and Westminster Gravels Ltd for both sand and gravel, principally for use in the construction industry during 2004, 3.23 million tonnes of aggregates was dredged from a permitted licensed tonnage of 4.65 million of the total marine aggregate dredged from the Humber region, 1.24 million tonnes was landed at wharves in the north east, located on the Tyne,Tees and Humber rivers. 1.58 million tonnes was landed at wharves in mainland Europe.The balance of landings comprised smaller tonnages delivered to ports on the east coast and River Thames and 0.2 million tonnes was specifically dredged for beach nourishment schemes. • the East Coast region has 15 licence areas, operated by British Dredging Ltd, HansonAggregates Marine Ltd, Cemex UK Marine Ltd, United Marine Dredging Ltd and VolkerDredging Ltd for both sand and gravel, principally for use in the construction industry

• during 2004, 8.85 million tonnes of aggregate was dredged from a permitted licensed tonnageof 12.70 million

• of the total marine aggregate dredged from the east coast region, 4.45 million was landed atwharves along the Thames and Medway rivers. A further 3.82 million tonnes was landed atwharves in mainland Europe.The balance of landings comprised smaller tonnages delivered toports on the East and South coasts and 0.31 million tonnes was specifically dredged for beachnourishment.

Regional statistics

• the licensed area in the East Coast region was 270.11 km2

• the total area actually available to be dredged within the East Coast region was 202 km2

• dredging took place within 50.1 km2, 18.55% of the licensed area

• high intensity dredging (greater than 1 hr 15 minutes) is equal to 4.11 km2, representing58.69% of regional dredging activity

• 90% of regional dredging effort took place from 16.14 km2

• during the period 2004, the area licensed for marine aggregate extraction within the EastCoast region remained unchanged.

• the Thames region has 9 licence areas, operated by Britannia Aggregates Ltd, British DredgingLtd, Hanson Aggregates Marine Ltd, Cemex UK Marine Ltd and United Marine Dredging Ltdfor both sand and gravel, principally for use in the construction industry

• during 2004, 1.01 million tonnes of aggregate was dredged from a permitted licensed tonnageof 3.45 million

• of the total marine aggregate dredged from the Thames region, 0.61 million tonnes was landedat wharves along the Thames and Medway rivers. A further 0.14 million was landed at wharvesin mainland Europe.The balance of landings comprised smaller tonnages delivered to ports onthe South coast and 0.25 million which was dredged specifically for contract fill.

Regional statistics

• the licensed area in the Thames region was 149.86 km2

• the total area actually available to be dredged within the Thames region during 2004 was136.07 km2

• dredging took place within 15.80 km2, 10.5% of the licensed area

• high intensity dredging (greater than 1 hr 15 minutes) is equal to 0.07 km2, representing6.76% of regional dredging activity

• 90% of regional dredging effort took place from 7.32 km2

• during the period 2004 the area licensed for marine aggregate extraction within the Thamesregion decreased by 6.43 km2.

• the South Coast region has 21 licence areas, operated by British Dredging Ltd, HansonAggregates Marine Ltd, Kendall Bros (Portsmouth) Ltd, Northwood (Fareham) Ltd, Cemex UKMarine Ltd, United Marine Dredging Ltd and Volker Dredging Ltd for sand and gravel, principallyfor use in the construction industry

• during 2004, 6.16 million tonnes of aggregate was dredged from a permitted licensed tonnageof 12.63 million

• of the total marine aggregate dredged from the south coast region, 2.90 million tonnes waslanded at wharves along the south coast, with 1.59 million tonnes landed on the Thames andMedway rivers. A further 0.65 million tonnes was landed at wharves in mainland Europe.Thebalance of landings comprised smaller tonnages delivered to ports on the east coast.

Regional statistics

• the licensed area in the South Coast region was 201.41 km2

• the total area actually available to be dredged within the south coast region was 101.44 km2

• dredging took place within 28.90 km2, 14.3% of the licensed area

• high intensity dredging (greater than 1 hr 15 minutes) is equal to 3.48 km2, representing 60.15% of regional dredging activity

• 90% of regional dredging effort took place from 10.69 km2

• during the period 2004 the area licensed for marine aggregate extraction within the SouthCoast region remained unchanged.

• the South West region has 10 licence areas, operated by British Dredging Ltd, HansonAggregates Marine Ltd, Llanelli Sand Dredging Ltd and United Marine Dredging Ltd for sand,principally for use in the construction industry

• during 2004, 1.64 million tonnes of aggregate was dredged from a permitted licensedtonnage of 2.57 million

• the majority of the marine aggregate dredged from the South West region was landed atwharves located along both sides of the Bristol Channel, whilst a minimal amount of tonnagewas delivered to ports on the South Coast.

Regional statistics

• the licensed area in the South West region was 54.41 km2

• the total area actually available to be dredged within the South West region was also 54.23 km2

• dredging took place within 12.8 km2, 23.5% of the licensed area

• high intensity dredging (greater than 1 hr 15 minutes) is equal to 1.19 km2, representing55.83% of regional dredging activity

• 90% of regional dredging effort took place from 4.42 km2

• during 2004, the area licensed for marine aggregate extraction in the South West regionremained unchanged.

• the North West region has 7 licence areas, operated by Norwest Sand and Ballast Co. Ltd,Cemex UK Materials Ltd, and United Marine Dredging Ltd for sand and gravels, principally foruse in the construction industry

• during 2004, 0.56 million tonnes of aggregate was dredged from a permitted licensedtonnage of 1.38 million

• all of the aggregate was landed at wharves in the North West of England and Wales.

Regional statistics

• the licensed area in the North West was 97.92 km2

• the total area actually available to be dredged within the North West region was 19.96 km2

• dredging took place within 2.3 km2, 2.35% of the licensed area

• high intensity dredging (greater than 1 hr 15 minutes) is equal to 0.25 km2, representing44.53% of regional dredging activity

• 90% of regional dredging effort took place from 0.63 km2

• during 2004, the area licensed for marine aggregate extraction within the North West regionremained unchanged.
