What are the Humanities?

The Humanities explore a broad range of subjects—including art, architecture, history, music, dance, languages, literature, philosophy, ethics, and religion. Students who se-lect Humanities as a major study the achievements of hu-man thought and creativity; they work within a variety ofdisciplines in order to acquire a deeper understanding ofthemselves, their civilization, and the world.

What courses are offered?

There are three components to the Humanities curriculum:foreign language study, core requirements, and electives.Foreign language study involves two semesters of intermedi-ate course work. Core requirements include HUMN 220,HUMN 221, and HUMN 222 which survey the artistic and in-tellectual legacy of Western Civilization and representativeworld civilizations (including India, China, Mesoamerica, Af-rica, and the Middle East). In the senior year, students enrollin the Senior Seminar, which explores a focused concern ina Humanities discipline. In addition, students are required towrite a senior thesis or undertake a senior project on a fo-cused topic chosen in consultation with their major advisor.Elective courses focus on key moments and developments inWestern and world culture.

Students are encouraged to take advantage of the manystudy-abroad opportunities offered by the university. Inaddition to exceptional programs in London, Florenceand Ghana, students can pursue their major at universi-ties in approximately 15 other locations around theworld, including Latin America, Europe, Africa, and Asia. Each year several students in the Humanities Programtake advantage of this exceptional experience.

The Humanities Minor

A minor in Humanities provides an abbreviated version ofthe major, with four core courses and four electives. It isan excellent choice for students seeking a well-roundededucation or a complement to their major field of study.

Additional minors are offered in Cinema Studies, ClassicalCivilization, Medieval Studies, and Renaissance Studies.
