INTERNATIONAL MEDICAL CORPS INTERVENTION FOR ACUTE WATERY DIARRHEA AND VOMITING OUTBREAK AT BENISHIEKH 30TH AUGUST 2018.

International Medical Corps Nigeria WASH team at General Hospital Benishiek and IMC CHV who mobilized themselves before IMC arrival (becoming first responders themselves)

International Medical Corps Team learnt of the purported cholera outbreak at Benishiek town in the 53 rd

WASH sector coordination meeting which took place on the 28th of August 2018. As at this time, IMC had pulled out of the area on the 31st of July 2018 after closure of OFDA grant. IMC left an existing structure with well-trained Community Health Volunteers who were able to mobilize themselves and started disinfection and hygiene promotion with material IMC left for them.

As at 28th of August, after the meeting, Mr. Zana Lawal Ajmim (Personal Assistant to the Governor and a local of Benishiek) reported to IMC a total of about 11 deaths and over 40 hospitalized. With inadequate medical personnel and drugs at the General Hospital Benishiek, some patients were moved to Maiduguri.

Based on the standing approval from USAID to respond in the current cholera / AWD outbreak in various locations in Maiduguri and environs, specifically Old Maiduguri, IMC Nigeria WASH team immediately sort for security clearance and deployed support to Benishiek. IMC had the following cholera kits on ground prepositioned as part of its strategic plan for expected cholera outbreak:

The areas affected so far at Benshiek include: Ajari, Mangari, Tamandari, Bulabulin behind lowcost and Meshari communities. The IDP camp affected is Isha Buhari IDP camp.

In the WASH Coordination meeting, IMC and ACF were ask to immediately deploy to Benishiek, as such, IMC WASH team immediately reactivated it existing structure and reinforced the team with extra 8 CHV making a total of 20 CHV for cholera awareness creation, hygiene promotion, disinfection of hot spots, distributing cholera kits to families of patients affected by the disease at home and host community. As at 30th of August 2018, IMC is still the only WASH partner responding to the AWD outbreak in Benishiek.

On the 29th of August 2018, 10 House Holds were visited who lost their families to disease and cholera kit was distributed and surrounding effectively disinfected with 2.0% concentration of chlorine solution. The dead persons ranged from 30 to 80 years old. The 11th on the death role was visited on the 30th of August 2018 with same cholera kit distributed and disinfection conducted.

IMC team visited the General Hospital Benishiek on the 30th of August 2018 and had a chat with Dr. Dala who explained that the outbreak was AWD as the test carried out was negative to cholera. However, the symptom was watery diarrhea with committing which is similar to cholera symptom. He confirmed that he has so far received a total of 34 patients with 4 deaths at the General Hospital Benisheik. However, he has confirmed significant drop in the AWD case per day from 11 patients on Friday 24 th August when it started to 2 patients as at Thursday 30th of August 2018.
