ADOPTION CRITERIAEach organization in Critter has its own adoption criteria. All organizationsrequire an adoption contract and a fee to recoup basic expenses. All will
require that your adoptee be a pet, not merely a utility animal for protectionor hunting. Most will ensure that the animals are spayed or neutered atthe time of adoption; underfunded shelters may instead require a spay/neuter contract and a deposit that will be refunded upon proof of spay or
neuter. Most will want to visit your home and see where the pet will live.Because many of these animals have not been well treated in the past,
extra care is taken to ensure their safety and happiness in the future.

Mabel’s Weight Loss Journey Mabel weighed 67 lbs. in December 2011 when her familydropped her off at Young-Williams Animal Center because shewas too large for them to care for her. She has been adoptedand is on a special diet and exercise routine. Check out herweight loss chart below. She has lost over half of her originalweight! Her goal weight is 25 lbs. Mabel has learned that slowand steady is the way to go with weight loss. It takes time tosafely lose the weight. She is an inspiration to her over 2100followers on facebook. She walks 30 minutes three times a week on an underwatertreadmill at the University of Tennessee College of VeterinaryMedicine. She needed help getting into the treadmill at first, butwas getting in by herself in March. In December Mabel couldhardly walk 20 to 30 feet without collapsing from exhaustion, andnow she goes on walks around her neighborhood and is upand about all the time. Her energy level, mobility and skinissues are greatly improved. She can breathe better, and thetorn ligament in her knee is stabilizing as she loses more weight. She is acting more like a puppy than a 5 year old dog. She isnow able to jump on the couch to nap instead of having to lie ona pillow in the floor like she did back in January. Mabel visited 7th graders at Soldiers Memorial MiddleSchool in Claiborne County in May and had her picture takenwith many of the students. Her weight loss story was theinspiration for part of an assignment for the students. They hadto learn about pet caloric intake and how much to feed their petsin addition to learning about the nutritional guides of fast foodrestaurants. Mabel was featured on three news shows in July - WBIR’sLive at Five at Four in Knoxville, NBC’s Action News 5 inMemphis, and WVLT’s Local 8 News in Knoxville. Mabelshowed off her “fat camp” transformation, and VeterinaryNutritionist Dr. Angela Witzel (Mabel’s new owner) sharedinformation about Mabel’s weight loss journey. Mabel’s weightloss is the result of proper diet (with absolutely no table scraps),exercise, and a dedicated owner. In September, Mabel added swimming laps in the indoor poolat the physical rehabilitation department to her exercise routine.Another recent benefit of Mabel’s weight loss is her ability tosocialize with other dogs. Now she is able to run, jump, sniff andplay with other dogs and is no longer the timid, out-of-shape galshe used to be.
Mabel doesn’t look like the same dog after losing 39 lbs.
Mabel has discovered that the last few pounds can be the hardestto lose. Instead of food rewards, Mabel gets lots of belly rubs inrecognition of her weight loss efforts. She is sticking to her diet andexercise routine, and the rest of the pounds will come off eventually -even if it is much slower to come off than all the weight she’s lost sofar. It takes time to lose weight safely. In November, Mabel had a minor setback when she turned overthe automatic cat feeder and decided to clean up the mess by eatingall the food. She must have thought Christmas came early! Mabel is back on track now and only 3 lbs away from her goalweight. Her mantra for the coming year (especially after the cat foodmishap) is “Nothing tastes as good as thin feels.” Although this seriesabout Mabel’s weight loss journey is over, be sure to follow hercontinuing story on facebook. Congratulations, Mabel!
Mabel in December 2011 at 67 lbs.

DOG SITTING(IN MY HOME)
Obese pets are at risk for urinary track disease, hypertension, liver problems, diabetes, respira-tory problems, cardiovascular disease, joint painand many other health issues.
The majority of cases of obesity are related tosimple overfeeding coupled with lack of exercise.
You should consult your pet’s vet before starting aweight loss program, which should include correctdiet, exercise, and owner behavior modification.
As with people, pets should lose weight gradually.Expect significant improvement to take severalmonths.

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO DRIVE SHELTER/RESCUE DOGS
Every week there are lifesavingtransports that go through Knoxville/EastTennessee. These transports carry one ormore dogs or puppies to places whererescue groups have available space, oreven where a forever home is waiting.
Each transport is a series of “legs” inwhich volunteer drivers each give a few hours on aweekend. Gas money is the only cost, though it issometimes provided if someone wishes to drive but cannotafford gas.
This is a wonderful way to make a real difference and savethe lives of dogs that would otherwise likely be euthanized.

Sonic is about 1 year old. Heis super sweet, loves to beheld, and enjoys sitting inyour lap. He gets along witheveryone.
Jasmine is the all time playfulcat. She loves playing with ballsof string and loves the attentionof humans.
Marley is a lot of cat tolove, but he is on a diet!.He is very sweet and likeseveryone.
Flash (right) isa playful 6month oldfemale kittenwhose sillyantics will makeyou laugh and tug at your heartstrings. She has been caredfor in a foster home since she was just a few weeks old and iswell socialized to people, cats, and dogs. Flash loves tocuddle and will lull you into a nap with her purring.
Frank (left) is super friendly, and as you can tell, hassome Siamese in him withthose adorable crossed blueeyes and his love for"singing." He is looking for ahome in the country, andcould possibly live inside andout. He does not get alongwith other cats.
Maddie is abeautiful 6 yearold dilute Calicofemale who isvery social. She reignssupreme in ourclinic and haswhat we call"tortitude"...aTorti/Calico withattitude. Shedoesn't put up with much from anyone, but is very loving onher own terms, and purrs and headbutts almost immediatelyafter meeting you. Maddie would probably do best in ahome without small children and without other cats, whereshe can rule in solitary splendor with her adoring subjects ather beck and call!
Coats and Thomasare best friends. They are very socialand enjoy being withthe other cats anddogs in the house. They are excellentwith children of allages. My smallnieces and nephewsoften pick them upand carry themaround the house.
They like attention and have never scratched or bitten anyone.

NINE-COUNTY SHELTER STATISTICS
Interpreting Shelter Statistics
The shelter statistics summary that has been printed in Critter formany years -- Total Incoming, Total Rehomed, Total Euthanized-- hides the true constraints under which shelters operate. Theexpanded summary above is intended to give you more insightinto the numbers.
In particular, the reasons that animals are euthanized can bebetter understood in the presentation of statistics above.
Medical Reasons for Euthanasia
The medical reasons that animals are euthanized may includedisease, injury, congenital conditions, or other conditions causedby severe neglect. Examples of severe conditions for medicaleuthanasia include Parvo, Sarcoptic Mange, Heartwormdisease, Ringworm, Feline Leukemia, Renal Failure, andCancer. Examples of less severe conditions include dentaldisease, Diabetes, seizure disorders, Demodectic Mange, chronic diarrhea, and other conditions for which treatment maybe lengthy and expensive.
One might assume that the severe illnesses and conditions are inthe minority, and the less severe conditions in the majority.Unfortunately, this is not the case. At Young-Williams AnimalCenter, for example, 64% of the animals euthanized in 2011 formedical reasons had untreatable conditions.
Behavioral Reasons for Euthanasia
Behavioral reasons for euthanasia may include biting, aggres-sion toward people, aggression toward other animals, separa-tion anxiety, lack of socialization, and neurotic symptoms of long-term social isolation such as pacing, extreme fearfulness, ordepression.

Again, one might think that severe behavioral problems are theexception, and mild problems more common. Not so. Drawingagain on experience at Young-Williams Animal Center in 2011,77% of the animals euthanized for behavioral reasons hadconditions that rendered them unsafe and unadoptable withoutlong-term, expensive intervention.
Euthanasia for Space
Euthanasia performed strictlly because a shelter facility is out ofspace is the category that everyone wants to eliminate as soonas humanly possible. This category pertains to healthy, adoptable animals that have nowhere to go. Their deaths areupsetting to everyone, most of all to shelter employees them-selves.
At Blount County Animal Center, 99 of 2,379 animals -- 4% --were healthy, of good temperament, yet euthanized for space.
At Young-Williams Animal Center, 634 of 14,996 animals -- 4% --were healthy, of good temperament, yet euthanized for space.
At Sevier County Humane Society, 80 of 4,217 animals -- 2% --were healthy, of good temperament, yet euthanized for space.
Euthanasia for space is close to being eliminated due to thetremendous efforts of shelter employees, volunteers, andgenerous donors who are helping spay and neuter animals, promote adoption, and transport animals to northern destinationswhere homes are available.
