DEFINITION Human trafficking

Is a crime that occurs whenever an individual is exploited for labor or sex through force, fraud, deception, or coercion. Except if the victim is under 18. Then coercion does not need to take place.

COMMON MISCONCEPTIONS AND REALITY

HUMAN TRAFFICKING EXISTS BECAUSE THE WORLD IS CONVINCED IT DOESN’T EXIST FURJACK FRUNDT

It only happens over seas not in USA

It only involves foreigners brought to the USA

14,500 women and children are trafficked into the United States each year

Reports show there are between 100,000 and 300,000 child prostitutes nationally

70% of law enforcement agents do not believe human trafficking is going on in their district

In Iowa +300 children reported as missing per month

Statistics say 1/3 children on the street are approached by a trafficker

About 75 children IN IOWA PER MONTH are forced into trafficking

Society never hears about it because of:

Children are labeled as missing persons- not kidnapped

Media not showing the truth behind the crimes

Police officers mislabeling cases that should be trafficking as prostitution

Page 6: HUMAN TRAFFICKING Created By Jourdan Bell ENG 105

HOW IT CAN SLIP THROUGH THE CRACKS UNDETECTED Society doesn’t know what to look for

Society has been misinformed on what a “pimp” really is because of pop culture

The victim is blamed- they are incapable of leaving and powerless. They do not see anyway out of that life for them.

When victims do escape their case is mislabeled at “prostitution”

Trafficking rings are stereotyped as unorganized- which is false

There are 100 – 150 girls in Iowa for sale right now on sites like Craig’s List, Tag, and Back Page

There is not enough man power or funding to chase down the offenders and victims

Police must take action on a municipal level

WHY DOES IT EXIST?

Pimps prey on young women and girls by finding their weakness and then exploiting it

In some cases a family will sell their child to pay for expenses

Polaris Project reported that a pimp who had three young women that were each were bringing back $500 every day

The pimp was making about $24,000 a month or $642,000 a year tax free by selling sex with young women he controlled and then keeping all the money

Human trafficking is a very lucrative business

THE LAW FOR OFFENDERS IN IOWA

The law considers human trafficking less serious than drug cases.

Many drug charges are class B felonies bringing up to 25 years imprisonment.

Most trafficking charges carry five-year maximums as class D felonies.

If the victim is a minor, the offense brings a 10-year maximum as a class C felony

“The consequences of having drugs on you are greater than the consequences of selling a human being. That’s wrong.” - Ruth Buckels an adoptive mother of a former human trafficking victim who lives in the Ames area

WHY IS HUMAN TRAFFICKING DIFFERENT THAN PROSTITUTION?

Prostitution is engaging in sexual activity for a benefit It is very difficult for a

prostitute to claim they were trafficked if they are over the age of 18

Perkins

The victim of human trafficking has no benefit The monetary gain goes

to the “pimp” “family” or “gang”

The sexual activity is forced upon the victim

The victim has usually been kidnapped from their family

Page 10: HUMAN TRAFFICKING Created By Jourdan Bell ENG 105

WHO IS AT RISK? Everyone is at risk of human trafficking- even boys.

Traffickers look for younger kids and teens that should be in school

Traffickers target younger kids because they are easier to manipulate

Traffickers aren’t afraid to spend time getting to know their victim prior to kidnaping or coercing them

Traffickers will give false promises Often lure young girls with promises of a modeling job

Once on the inside the victims are often beaten and raped with the Pimp offering protection if the victim complies to the pimp’s demands

BOYS AND HUMAN TRAFFICKING While 98% of victims are women and girls- men, and

boys are also trafficked The other 2% of males world wide, are overlooked. Males are usually trafficked for labor or slavery

however some are trafficked for sexual means. Males have a sense of shame making it harder to

identify victims. When males that have been trafficked are arrested it is

usually for a crime such as petty theft- even the officer has difficulty identifying this male traffic victim

HIGH TRAFFIC AREAS

High traffic areas such as truck stops and strip clubs are common for human trafficking.

Iowa is notoriously known for the I 253 x I 80 mix master in trafficking.

I 235 x I 80 give easy access transportation from border to border, ocean to ocean.

These are the most common routes for Traffickers through the USA.

Cities that have trafficking pandemics are labeled with red dots.

Now ask yourself… How close to my back yard is human trafficking?

Routes of Domestic Sex Trafficking in the United States.

Page 14: HUMAN TRAFFICKING Created By Jourdan Bell ENG 105

HOW DO WE HELP? It starts with awareness

Accept what is happening- it is not uncommon

Teach children what a pimp REALLY is

Use of correct terminology

“Pimp” is legal term for someone who sells someone else’s sexual services

It is not glamorous “Your clothes are pimpin’” or “Your ride is pimp”

Prostitution vs Human trafficking

If you see someone you believe is a victim of human trafficking

Do not approach

Call the police

You do not want to step between a pimp and his half a million dollars Furjack

VICTIM ASSISTANCE PROGRAMS There are a vast number of victim assistance classes out

there. However for those that are victims of trafficking there are few.

A majority of the programs available are for prostitution and drugs.

Not all prostitutes have done drugs

There is a major difference between prostitutes and victims of trafficking

There are some programs to assist with shelter, food, medical insurance, and legal assistance

If the victim is of foreign origin there are programs to assist in becoming a legal citizen.
