International Summer Academy 2011Human Rights and Natural Law

The international summer academy is designed to discuss some essential philosophical con-cepts underlying the idea of human rights by taking an intercultural approach. The political controversy about questions of justice and hu-manity has intensified struggles about relative autonomies of interpretation regarding both the content and meaning of the idea of human rights.

It was in ancient Greek philosophy where the idea arose that there is a supreme law before which any civil law created by human societies has to be justified. Since then the concept of natural law not only remained one of the pa-radigms of western civilization but has shaped the development of international legislation in general. Keeping this background in mind, the courses will investigate the questions of historic continuity and discontinuity and the intercultu-ral validity of the philosophical foundations of human rights.
