What we know:

Every person is born equal and should have equal human rights

There are 30 human rights as defined by the United Nations

Not all people have equal human rights

WHY?

What we know:

Through our research we learned that people’s human rights are affected by decisions

made by leaders

Some leaders promote human rights – they understand the importance of equality

Some leaders deny or violate human rights by treating people unequally and unfairly

So we can say not all people have equal human rights

Do people experience inequality only because of their leaders?

What we want to know:Inequality and violation of human rights can also be caused by:

Prejudice – this means to pre-judge someone based on their

gender, race, ethnicity, economic background, etc. It is like ‘judging a book by its cover’. You make a decision about the contents by only seeing the picture on the front. And this judgment is often wrong as you know from reading many books.

Prejudice is a social issue. Human rights violations by leaders is a political

issue.

What we want to know:Inequality and violation of human rights can also be caused by:

Criminal activity – this means people break the law and treat

people badly and deny their human rights.

Criminal activity is a social issue and can be a political issue, depending on

who is promoting this activity.

How will we find out more?:Your group will discuss and agree to research one issue of inequality. You will research information to address:

Who – is affected?

Who – is responsible?

Where – does this happen?

When – did this happen in the past? Is it still happening today?

When is important as we can make connections with the past and the present.
