SUBJECT: POST UNITARY STATUS – LETTERS OF INTENT TO HIRE FOR FULL-TIME INSTRUCTIONAL STAFF

Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS) is fully committed to a teaching corps that is reflective of the wide diversity among the students we serve. In accordance with School Board Rule 6Gx13- 4A-1.01 – Equal Opportunity Employment and Assignment, M-DCPS strives to recruit, hire, and maintain a highly qualified and diverse pool of instructional applicants. After more than thirty years of operation under a desegregation order that mandated specific racial composition among school faculties, the district was declared a unitary system effective July 1, 2002. Post-unitary status and the Board’s commitment to diversity have made it possible to select instructional staff based upon a variety of qualifications and factors, including educational background, advanced degrees, experience and the needs of the school. The current District guidelines insure a highly qualified and diverse pool of applicants for all of our schools. In order to adhere to these guidelines and Board policy, principals may no longer initiate full-time instructional employment using a “letter of intent”. With the opening of the Applicant Tracking System (ATS), effective July 8, 2003, instructional applicants may be interviewed and hired only via the ATS. Principals are reminded to complete the Instructional Personnel Interview Form (IPIF) for each instructional hire and submit it accordingly. The only area where a letter of intent from the worksite supervisor will be permitted is part-time vocational or adult and non-instructional support staff. These applicants will continue to be processed with a complete application and a letter of intent from the worksite supervisor. Your adherence to this procedure is anticipated and appreciated. Questions may be directed to Ms. Marilyn Thomas at 305.995.7003 or [email protected].
