• Watch discovery education– Introduction to the circulatory system
The Circulatory System
Purpose – transport nutrients, oxygen, CO2, water, and other materials throughout the body.

Q: What does the heart do?
Heart
• Main organ of the circulatory system
• Located between the lungs
• Heart is a pump
• One of the strongest Muscles in the body

Pericardium
• Pericardium – double walled sac that surrounds, protects, and anchors the heart.

Chambers?
• Heart is divided into 4 chambers…
– Top two chambers = atria (left and right)
– Bottom two chambers = ventricles (left and right)

Sinoatrial Node
• Also known as the S-A Node
• Pacemaker of the heart
• Responsible for the maintaining the beat and rhythm of the heart.
• Avg. resting adult 70 beats per minute (BPM).
Pumps of the heart…
• Two pumps (right and left).
• Pulmonary circulation (right side) – receives blood from the body and circulates it to the lungs.
• Systemic circulation (left side) – receives blood from the lungs and circulates it to the rest of the body.
The sound of a heart beat…
• “LUB-DUB” – a two part beat.
• “LUB” = the closing of the valves between the atria and ventricles
• “DUB” = the closing of the valves between the ventricles and the outgoing arteries

“LUB”
Blood Colors
• Bright RED – Oxygen Rich (leaving the lungs headed to the cells)
• Blue – Carbon Dioxide Rich (leaving the cells headed back to the lungs)
Closed Circulatory System
• Closed Circulatory System – Blood stays confined within the blood vessels.
