CAMERA WORK AND SOUND

• Simple short cuts are used in educating Yorkshire in conversations taking place between students and teachers. Close ups are used most often when there is a voice over used who is speaking bout a particular student/event, so that the audience can identify who the person is they are speaking about.

• Selective focus is used to create a selected view in the frame and to focus the camera on the main subject which in this documentary is usually the students.

• There is a lot of non diegetic sound in this documentary as there are many conversations taking place throughout. This documentary also has their own piece of music which is used as incidental music that they play to create a sense of movement as this music is usually used when the children attending the school are walking to their first lessons.

THEME, DEMOGRAPHICS AND PSYCHOGRAPHICS• The demographic audience of this documentary is e, d, c2, c1. I think this because

they are watching other peoples life's who attend school, so I think that this could be a clear portrayal of the category of people who watch the show.

• The theme within this documentary is observational/interactive as there are voiceovers in and throughout the documentary to explain what is about to happen/what is happening. I also think its observational in the sense that it seems as if the filming is taking place as if it was un expected because it is of every day life at a school. There is also parts in the documentary in which the students/teachers are filmed behind a whiteboard with writing on which is used to foreground that they are in a warning environment. The use of direct address allows the documentary to move on with what events are taking place. In each episode, they usually focus their attention on one student in particular then the rest of the documentary is used filming other aspects of school life. The use of direct address allows the audience to relate to the particular story in the episode as the documentary/how its presented will create an impression on the audience- for example if its a sad story line, there may be a way that individuals in a film make their own case to create sympathy, but it is also a mode that can act to undermine the interviewees, making them look foolish or deluded. Their interpretation of events or personal account may be rendered to seem trustworthy or untrustworthy depending on the context of surrounding shots or the nature of the statements being made in their own right. This ables the audience to draw observations from each character/event in the documentary.

The psychographics for ‘Educating Yorkshire’ are mainstreamers and explorers. I think this because the mainstream category of people are interested in other peoples lives and what happens in different events/situations. I also think that they might be explorers because of their research into other peoples life's and how they act.

MISE EN SCENE AND EDITINGThe use of mise en scene within this documentary is vital for the portrayal of ste-reotypes and different types of people within it. All of the students wear their school uniform, however the uniform policy is sometimes challenged by pupils- this is some-times the story line of a particular episode. On the other hand, all of the staff wear office wear- this helps to foreground the contrast between students and staff as we can identify them clearly. Some of the students wear makeup- this is mostly the girls. Sometimes makeup is over exaggerated to thus demonstrate their youth and inno-cence. The lighting is bright so everything can be seen, however in certain scenes, natural light is used to portray the mood. When the documentary is using direct ad-dress, the lighting is bright so that everything can be seen and so facial expressions can be seen- this is to foreground the purpose of direct address which is to express feelings or emotions to a certain subject. The location of the documentary is set in a school- this is recognised by the standard things you would see in a school (staff, children, desks, whiteboards e.c.t.) The loca-tion is also noticeable at the beginning of the documentary as there are establishing shots of the exterior of the building, introducing the audience to the location from the offset. Editing is used in this documentary to create certain effects and purposes. There are short takes used at the beginning and throughout when moving onto a different subject/scene which help the audience have a feel of the environment and atmo-sphere we will be watching. Editing is also used in the classroom, using long takes of certain students so we can view their expressions properly and make a judgement of their personality. The documentary also uses eye line matches so that the audience can engage with the students/teachers so that they can portray feelings and emo-tions.
