October - December 2019 www.hulthealthy.org 1 Happy Fall, Encore Members! I am very excited to share with all of you the upcoming Encore events to close out 2019 and ring in the New Year! We will continue to offer our quarterly programs related to safe driving, iPhone/iPad series, and Medicare classes to name a few. Check out a new class addition – Eating Right! A one-hour class, which includes a short nutrition lesson, fun activity, and healthy recipe. The National Diabetes Prevention Program (DPP) will be starting another group on Tuesday, October 8th, 2019 (10:00 AM – 11:00 AM) at the Hult Center. DPP is a year-long program designed for people who have Prediabetes or are at high-risk for developing type 2 diabetes. The program is not intended for people who have an existing diabetes diagnosis. If you are looking to make modest lifestyle changes to improve your health and reduce your risk for chronic conditions, be sure to check out this program! 4th: Prediabetes: Are You At Risk? (10:00-11:00 AM) Pekin Public Library (301 S 4th Street, Pekin)This program will discuss the basics of prediabetes and what steps you can take to prevent or delay the onset of type 2 diabetes and other serious health conditions.

11th: Eating Right with Encore: Tricks and Treats! Halloween the Healthy Way (10:00-11:00 AM) Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. Knoxville, Peoria)As Halloween approaches, the concern of all the tempting candy and extra calories approaches, too. Can Halloween and health co-exist? The answer is YES! Have no fear, we will be talking about how to make Halloween a more nutritious holiday and try a fun and healthy alternative Halloween-themed recipe.

16th: Seniors on the Go: Breast Health (10:30 AM-12:00 PM) Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. Knoxville Avenue, Peoria) October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Join Dr. Correa as she discusses the topic of breast health from 10:30 AM-12:00 PM. The Wellmobile will be available from 8:00-10:30 AM for blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings at no charge! Fasting is required for these screenings. The presentation begins at 10:30 AM and is followed with a lunch. Participants must register in advance.

17th: Senior Film Event: Mr. Smith Goes to Washington (10:00 AM-12:30 PM) Peoria Riverfront Museum (222 SW Washington Street, Peoria)Hult Center for Healthy Living’s Encore program, in partnership with Peoria Riverfront Museum and OLLI, present a special screening of Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, a 1939 American political comedy-drama, tells the story of a newly appointed United States Senator who fights against a corrupt political system. $5.00 admission for OLLI member/$10.00 non-members includes moderated discussion, film screening, popcorn, and soda. Please register in advance by contacting OLLI at 309-677-3900. Transportation not provided – met us there! Free parking is available in the deck accessible from Water Street.

23rd & 24th: AARP Smart Driver Course (8:30 AM-12:30 PM) Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. Knoxville, Peoria)The AARP Smart Driver Course is the nation’s largest classroom driver safety course and is designed especially for drivers age 50 and older. Cost is $15.00 for AARP members and $20.00 for non-members. Please, bring

your AARP membership card, Driver’s License, and a pen. Must attend full session on both days to qualify for Insurance Discount.

30th: Writer Within (1:30-3:00 PM) UnityPoint Health at N. Allen-Conference Room A (2338 W. Van Winkle Way, Peoria)This is the perfect monthly group to write your story that you have lived in memoir form and to pass on to family members and friends, today and “tomorrow”. There are no prerequisites except for the need to get our stories on paper and knowing there is a group we can share them with.

8th: Senior Film Event: Gone with the Wind (10:00 AM-12:30 PM) Peoria Riverfront Museum (222 SW Washington Street, Peoria)Hult Center for Healthy Living’s Encore program, in partnership with Peoria Riverfront Museum, AARP, and OLLI, present a special screening of Gone with the Wind, the epic historical romance film set in the American South against the backdrop of the Civil War. $5.00 admission for OLLI member/$10.00 non-members includes moderated discussion, film screening, popcorn, and soda. 13th: AARP: Fraud Watch: ID Theft & Cyber Safety (1:00-2:30 PM) Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. The AARP Fraud Watch Network is working to empower you in the fight, with proven resources and tools to help you spot and avoid identity theft and fraud. By taking a few practical steps, you have the power to fight back against fraud. We will be talking about how you can enjoy Thanksgiving in a healthful and fun way, including creating a healthy holiday plate, cooking modifications, and portion control strategies. You will also get to try a healthy recipe themed for the holidays.

13th: Eating Right with Encore: Holiday Cheer! Healthy Habits Are Here (10:00-11:00 AM) Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. Knoxville, Peoria).Did you know, the average American gains 1 pound from Thanksgiving to New Year’s Day? We’ll discuss strategies for making your holiday hurdles into healthful holiday habits, along with portion size pitfalls, so you can worry less and enjoy more during this holiday season.

Seniors on the Go: Better Sleep, Better Health (10:30 AM-12:00 PM)Hult Center for Healthy Living (5215 N. Knoxville Avenue, Peoria)Join Dr. Wiley from Koala Center for Sleep and TMJ Disorders as he discusses how quality sleep impacts your overall health and longevity. The risks of sleep apnea on heart health, appetite, memory, and cognitive skills, as well as how it impacts our relationships and community will be discussed. Discover how to get to sleep and stay asleep. Don’t let your health suffer any longer due to snoring, sleep apnea, or fear of the unknown. Wellmobile will be available from 8:00-10:30 AM for blood glucose, cholesterol, and blood pressure screenings at no charge! Fasting is required for these screenings. There will also be free Sleep Apnea Screenings on-site (no fasting required) during this time. The presentation begins at 10:30 AM and is followed with a lunch. Our Registered Dietitians work one-on-one with patients and their oncology team to develop a nutrition plan that supports healing and helps improve quality of life during cancer treatments and beyond. They also provide healthy cooking demonstrations, nutrition presentations, and a breast cancer survivors’ weight management program.

Our licensed counselor conducts individual counseling, educational presentations, therapeutic support groups, and palliative care clinics for individuals with a cancer diagnosis, families, and caregivers. Massages are $35.00 per hour for those in “active” treatment and $45.00 per hour for those not in active treatment and caregivers. Our experienced team of massage therapists have all received specialized training in oncology massage to deliver safe, comfort-oriented massages to all affected by cancer and its treatments. Aerobics– Tuesdays at 9:00 AM (Methodist Wellness Center) Gentle exercise with low impact. All Levels welcome. Breath of Joy Yoga– Mondays at 5:15 PM (Hult Center) A registered yoga teacher, Marcy brings her experience as a cancer survivor to the class. Yoga with Jean– Wednesdays at 11:00 AM (Hult Center) All levels welcome.Living Strong– Fridays at 9:00 AM (Methodist Wellness Center) Strength training class. All levels welcome. Restorative Yoga– Thursdays at 5:30 PM (Hult Center) Gently open body, heart, and mind with breath and movement in this yoga class. Beginner friendly. Mindfulness Meditation– Every Tuesday at 5:15 PM. (Hult Center) A very simple form of meditation, so you don’t need any previous experience.
