Hull condition monitoring
Requirements come fromflag states and classification• IMO requirements (ESP, PSPC)• IACS requirementscargo owners• CAP surveys, TMSAship owners• Optimizing hull maintenance
Thickness measurements andvisual inspections are the tools.
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 3
The goals of the GL Hull Lifecycle Programme (HLP)• Life-long access to all information
on hull condition
• Fast overview and clear communication through 3D visualization
• First class support for planning and assessment of hull inspections
• Avoid costly repairs through timely maintenance
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 4
• Measurements typically take several days
• Approx. same time needed for reporting as for measurement
• Highly manual process
• Frequent copying of data
• Difficult to visualize findings
• No electronic assessment support (except Excel tables)

TM companies work more efficiently
Generate printouts for use on board Create sequence(s) of
points in GL Pegasus
Take the readings and mark locations and order on printouts
connect UTM Gauge and download results to GL Pegasus Visualise and print
the results...
• measurement values are transferred automatically
• locations are only entered once
no redundant data input

Visualisation/Assessment of Results
• Easy identification of hotspots:S: substantial corrosion (yellow)I: substantial corrosion, to be investigated
whether locally limited (orange)R: has to be renewed (red)
• Results can be visualised in both 2D and 3D
clear view of inspection results: avoid misinterpretation of results better communication with repair
yards
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 9
Avoid unnecessary repairs through assessment of longitudinal strength
• Today, measured thickness is compared to maximal diminutions in Excel tables
• Repairs can be avoided in cases when longitudinal and local strength is still sufficient
with class notation HLP, systematic recalculation of stress distribution etc. is done to avoid unnecessary repairs

TM Case Study, July 2006
Measurement campaign Paradise N• Ore Carrier, Reederei F. Laeisz, Rostock
• Length 321 m, breadth 58 m, deadweight 322000 t
• On voyage from Taranto (southern Italy) to Rio de Janeiro
• N&P Maritime- und Industrietechnik GmbH
• 14 days on voyage in ballast condition
• class renewal partheld
• Scope: ballast tanks, cargo spaces, main deck, coaming, hatch covers
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 11
Measurement with GL Pegasus
• Definition of measurement sequences within Pegasus according to planned fill levels of ballast tanks
TM Case Study
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 12
Transfer of results• Done at end of day
• Transfer of measurement data from UTM device to laptop running GL Pegasus
• Checking results using 2D and 3D graphics
• Attach photos if requried
TM Case Study
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 13
End of voyage
• Generation of print report including graphics
• Hatch covers, aft- and forepeak measurements have been reported conventionally (manual tables and sketches, combined in final report)
• Issuance of survey statement referring to TM report
TM Case Study
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 14
Summary
• Measurement procedure itself remains the same
• Combined approach poses no problem (conventional tables are also included in GL Pegasus)
• System can be used on voyage as well as in yard
TM Case Study
2008-04-21Hull Lifecycle Programme No. 15
The scope of HLP• Initial creation and regular
updates of a 3D ship model
• GL Pegasus driven Thickness Measurements
• Direct Access to TM results via fleet-online
• GL Pegasus Viewer software for data visualisation
• Class notation HLP
• Hull Monitoring based on the 3D ship model
Use HLP starting with newbuilding phase as a tool for the owner / operator to keep track of the ship’s status

Benefits for Ship Owners and Operators• Easier assessment: graphical overview of thickness measurements
• Faster availability of final report
• Higher quality of data, no redundant data input
• Avoid unnecessary repairs through fast re-assessment of longitudinal and local strength
• Use the 3D Model throughout the whole vessel’s lifecycle for
• chronological comparison of surveys,
• easy comparison between sister ships
• Easier communication using graphics (for crew, repair yards, ...)
• Clearly document structural condition for administrative bodies, potential buyers, etc.
