AWARDS AND HONORS • Selected for Fellowship in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN) and inducted into the

American Academy of Nursing (October 2011). • Received the 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award in Research, National Yang-Ming University,

Taipei, Taiwan (2012). I graduated from the traditional BSN program in 1990. I was selected as the recipient of the National Yang Ming University’s 2012 Outstanding Alumni Award for Research. This is a highly competitive award, with alumni from all programs across the university (Schools of Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Biomedical Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Technology, and Social Sciences), being eligible. The Taiwan Ministry of Education established National Yang Ming University as the first university in Taiwan dedicated to biomedical education and research. The University is committed to excellence in health-related research and to promoting intercollegiate and international collaboration. PROGRAM OF RESEARCH My research area is patient safety and quality of care in inpatient care settings. My program of research is to understand factors that contribute to falls and to test patient-centered interventions for preventing falls of adult patients in hospital settings. Research areas and interests

• Patient safety and quality of care in hospitals: e.g., patient falls, infection control, newly emerging infectious diseases, religions and cultures, informatics, health policy, history of Chinese medicine (75 journal articles; 55 of them were published in SCI/SSCI journals; 42 of them on inpatient falls in refereed professional journals; one professional book, entitled “Patient unit safety and care quality: Promotion of self-healing systems during hospital stays”)

• Human resource management and leadership: e.g., the relationship between human resource management and care quality, ethics, occupational hazards, resource allocation, family involvement in inpatient care, higher education administration (32 journal articles; 17 of them were published in SCI/SSCI journals)

• Teaching and research methodology (8 journal articles; 6 of them were published in SCI/SSCI journals)

The specific aims were: (Aim 1) To develop the prototype of a sensor network device to measure and record bed height and generate computerized reminders to enhance staff adherence to keeping beds in the lowest position; and (Aim 2) To pilot test the sensor network device and examine staff adherence to keeping beds in the lowest position. This feasibility study used a pre-post intervention research design. A collaboration between School of Nursing and College of Engineering accomplished Aim 1. To achieve Aim 2, we collaborated with one acute inpatient care unit in a Michigan community hospital.

• Served as the lead faculty member for the dScribe pilot of the School of Nursing. The dScribe pilot is coordinated by the Open.Michigan Office at the Medical School, University of Michigan. OpenCourseWare, an emerging platform for online global knowledge sharing, is being used in this pilot project, and dScribe is the software tool used to manage the content of the educational materials. This pilot was a university wide initiative in the health sciences on open educational resources and was considered to be one of the most innovative teaching strategies. The course offered by School of Nursing was Utilization of Nursing Research in Advanced Practice (N536, a graduate-level research methodology course). (May–November 2008)
