Behavior in Case of Fire

Polymers release a large amountof combustion gases in c ase of fire.

These gases are rated as follows:

n Toxicity

n Corrosivity

n Smoke DensityAdditionally, the fire propagation is another veryimportant factor.

Sep. 2008 /H+S / Melvin GohExcellence in Connectivity Solutions10.1.97/DMFP

plb-pr-e.ppt

Toxicity

Dioxide

Danger to HumansThe following quantities of toxic gases arelethal after 30 minutes:

Carbon Dioxide 100'000 ppmCarbon Monoxide 4'000 ppmHydrogen Chloride 500 ppmNitrogen Oxide 250 ppmHydrogen Fluoride 100 ppm

A PVC cable of 10m length and of about 3kg insulation material produces approximatel y 300 lt of hydrochloric acid gas in case of fire.

This is a concentration of about 4'000 ppm of hydrogen chloride in an average office room (10x5x3m) w hich is8 times the lethal concentration.

Sep. 2008 /H+S / Melvin GohExcellence in Connectivity Solutions10.1.97/DMFP

plb-pr-e.ppt

Smoke Density

High smoke densit y causesvisibility problems and makesit very difficult to follow theescape routes. A measurement for smoke densit yis the light absorption.

Compared with other halogen materialsRADOX 125 has a very low smokeemission.

Visibility impediment can cause severe difficulties inextinguishing a fire and in saving lives.

Therefore, the use of non -smoking materials is ver yimportant.

Sep. 2008 /H+S / Melvin GohExcellence in Connectivity Solutions10.1.97/DMFP

plb-pr-e.ppt

Flame Retardance

This is a material characteristic which describes the spread of fire. Flame retardant materials like RADOX 125 are self-extinguishing in case of fire and therefore reduce the risk of a fire propagation along the cable.
