I had been cared for by my grandma since my mom died when I was seven. My grandma broke her back when I was sixteen and so I was placed in foster care. I was really angry at the time. I was also scared. I was most scared about being separated from my two chil- dren. At sixteen I had a two year old and a newborn daughter. Thankfully I wasn’t separated from my kids. Instead I was placed in a white person’s home. This felt really different for me because although I look white I feel like I am Hispanic and black since the people who raised me all my life were Hispanic and black. I was only there a week because the father didn’t like me and the way I did things. After that I went to a group home in Fresno for another week because I kept fighting with everyone. That place was hell. It was a group home full of people from probation and I was the only person from foster care. Finally, back in San Jose I arranged to live with a close family friend who became my foster mom. I lasted there 8 months because I wanted to move because the family friend’s son was doing things like smoking weed that I wasn’t comfortable with. I was worried my kids might have drugs in their system. After that I moved to another group home until finally I got my own apartment when I turned 18. It took me a while but I graduated from high school at San Jose Conservation Corp. after I turned 18. I received an award from Americorps (a pro- gram from my high school) for college tuition. I started attending school at San Jose City College. I received help from my Emerging Scholars case manager, Lona, and my CASA Barbara, who helped me see that I could accomplish my goals and that I have a big future. Now that I am getting close to aging out of ILP I’ve developed a strong relationship with my case manager, Daniel. He makes me feel like I can ask questions and get the help I need. I feel really connected to him in a way that I never felt before. I am close to aging out; I’m nervous because my income is going to decrease. I saved up some money while in care and bought a car. So that should help. My goal is to finish college and get a certificate so I can start earning more money and then continue to become educated as well as save money to buy a home. I know I need to take baby steps and see accomplishments so I don’t give up. My goal is to attain a medical assistant certificate and then continue to move forward. I accomplished another goal recently which I thought I would never do which is to earn my driver’s permit. A lot of people were pushing me to do it and I finally did. I am excited about my future. I’ve seen progress. I’ve completed nine units in college and I got a job working for San Jose City College in the financial aid office. I will keep coming to the HUB and utilizing the services as much as I can and continue to share my progression in life with the staff. Lakisha T.
