The Hillhead exhibition madeits return after an extendedbreak. The sun shone down onthe Buxton quarry as theindustry displayed its latestinnovations and talked shop. The fact that the event is heldin a quarry, hosting busy livedemonstration areas, makes itan ideal location to also betalking about safety. So it washighly appropriate thatHillhead welcomed the chairof the Health and SafetyExecutive (HSE), JudithHackitt, who was there tomake a special address tomark 10 years of success inreducing death and injury inGreat Britain's quarries.

Reportable injuries in the sectorare down 76% since the 'HardTarget' initiative was launched in2000 and Ms Hackittcommended companies, tradebodies and trade unions for theirefforts.

Ms Hackitt also used her speechon the opening morning of theshow to rally the industry inmaking a renewed commitmentto 'Target Zero', with the aim ofbringing down reportable injuriesby a further 15% year on year by2015.

“The quarrying industry hasdemonstrated what can beachieved when an industry sectorcommits to improvement in healthand safety. However, there is noroom for complacency,” she said.

“As the number of incidentsdecrease, it will get ever morechallenging for the industry tomake further gains. Reaching thenew goals will require even morehard work, determination and thedevelopment of new approaches.

“The improvements made so farare down to strong leadership, with employers promoting asafety culture right across theirorganizations, bolstered by theefforts of the unions and tradeassociations. It is also aboutcreating an environment thatencourages sharing and learning.”

Martin Isles, the MPA's director ofhealth and safety, and deputypresident of the Institute ofQuarrying, commented: “Theindustry has made massivestrides in health and safety overthe last 10 years in particular. Butto achieve its ultimate goal of zeroharm, a stronger focus is neededon the more challenging issuesand to convince all stakeholdersthat the supply chain has a vitalrole to play.”

Representing those at the sharpend, a spokesperson for the GMBtrade union added: “GMBstrongly supports the work ofeveryone involved in the TargetZero campaign. The superbresults achieved to date aretestimony to the value of involvingworkers to develop joint solutionsto the key issues that thequarrying industry faces. We lookforward to embedding this goodpractice across the sector anddriving further improvements inthe future.”

Steve Cole of the BritishAggregates Association talkedabout the BAA's Site AssessmentScheme and the significantcontribution it can make to TargetZero for its members. Thescheme is designed to ensurethat an entire site meets all of therequirements laid down in thelegislation affecting quarryoperations. After examination ofthe operation by an independenthealth and safety assessor, aspecialist panel considers thefindings of the assessor before afinal certificate is awarded. Thecertificate lasts for three yearsand the rigorous scheme isdesigned to be a 'moving'document that is constantlyupdated in line with newlegislation and standards.

Many BAA members have nowcompleted the scheme, whileothers had signed up to thecommitment and were in variousstages of assessment.

With many of its members havinglimited resources, this BAAscheme shows how simpleinnovations can enhance safety.

Within their recycled and secondaryaggregate washing operations CRLcurrently operate a Tecnoidea platepress which required a replacementfeed pump which would offer improvedefficiency and performance.

Experiencing high wear with the rubberwet end parts with the existing rubberlined pump, alongside the difficulty insourcing replacement items had acontinual adverse effect on production.CRL approached and tasked Linatex tosupply a pump which would feed at aminimum of 7 bar end pressure, provide longer wear life at a reducedcost and be covered by local supportand spares back up.

Linatex subsequently supplied aLinatex G4 Hard Metal Pump HSN100(with packed gland and expeller seal)which delivers the fine, flocculated, thixotropic, abrasive slurry feed materialfrom a sludge holding tank to the press.

Providing a superior performance thanits predecessor, the Linatex G4 HardMetal HSN100 Pump feeds the materialat a minimum of 8.5 bar end pressureenabling the press to work moreefficiently and produce a dry filter cake.

The on-site installation in November2009 by the Linatex Service Team tookjust one day to complete, which alsoincluded some pipework modificationswith the customer back in productionimmediately.

A clear winner:

From past results with the Linatex G4Hard Metal Pump HSN100 the serviceresults will indicate a clear winner infavour of the Linatex pump which willdeliver a minimum of 12 months partlife with a cost saving of 30% incontrast to the old rubber pump.

After delivering and installing the pumpwithin one week of receiving the order, the customer was delighted with theperformance of the pump. The LinatexG4 Hard Metal Pump will provide thecustomer with substantial annualsavings on maintenance costs, with thewet end wear life expected to be twicethat of the original pump parts.

The increased pressure provided hasnot only led to a drier filter cake beingproduced but has also allowed morewater to be recycled for use within thesystem. Alongside the additional savingin fuel costs for transporting the drier

filter cake (lighter material) to stockpilethe Linatex G4 Hard Metal PumpHSN100 will provide CRL with the“lowest cost of ownership” for itsintegral part in their ongoing recyclingoperation.

Ian Mariner - Director, commented, “Wealways aim to use the highest qualityequipment to aid the success andefficiency of our operation. We havebeen delighted with the Linatex Pumpwe have received and the ongoingservice and support the Linatex staffhave provided us.”

The CRL Recycled and SecondaryAggregate Washing Plant was originallypart funded by WRAP to produce265,000 tonnes over a 5 year period.Since the start of the project in October2007 CRL have consistently providedhigh quality aggregate for use inconcrete, drainage and construction. An estimated 500,000 tonne of naturalgravel will be preserved fromexcavation during the lifetime of theplant.

Tarmac Limited who own and operateextensive sand and gravel operations atStanway, near Colchester is the leadingsupplier of heavy building materials in the UKproviding solutions in all areas of everyday life.

Tarmac Stanway is a key site for the companywho have previously made a significantinvestment in state-of-the-art processingtechnology at the East Anglian sand andgravel operation in 2007, Linatex as part ofthis investment, were one of the mainsuppliers, successfully installing a sandprocessing classification system for theoperation.

Keeping the plant in tip top condition andcontinually optimising its efficiency is a dailyrequirement at the site. Management at theplant had been unhappy with the service lifeand unsatisfactory performance of an existingnon return valve which was installed on a(remove waste disposal) silt discharge linewith a feed comprising process waste of(remove mixed) fines and sandy clays. Provingdifficult to seal, this caused the valve to leak, resulting in the quarry processing areabecoming flooded on a regular basis.

Consequently, after consultation Linatexrecommended and subsequently installed a300mm diameter Linatex CV SNR single nonreturn check valve. The Linatex CV SNR valvehas provided a comprehensive solution for therequired performance requirements whichentailed being able to withstand a 20 metresystem head, 1,400 metres if 300mm NBpipe and a flow rate of 600m3/hr.

Since the installation in January 2010 theLinatex CV SNR valve has continually provenits design and performance, ensuring a driptight sealing against pipeline back flow, withits unique design ensuring no part of the valvemechanism is in contact with the water. Asthe design is 'full flow' with minimum pressuredrop, Tarmac has stated a second benefitthey are enjoying is considerable powersavings when compared with the previousvalve.

The Linatex Check Valve - series CV SNR is asingle port rubber lined swing check valve forprevention of reverse flow in abrasive andcorrosive flowing media. The valve has nointernal metal parts exposed to the processflow and features a metal and fabric reinforcedmoulded rubber disc that seals drip tight overa full bore port. All the internal parts of thevalve are lined with replaceable LinatexRubber Liners, ensuring minimummaintenance.

Mark Murray - Quarry Manager, commented,“Prior to the installation of the new Linatexcheck valve we experienced significant issueswhen we switched the main silt pump off. Thefull silt line which is 1.4km in length and at a20 metre head would rush back down thepipe and previous valves proved ineffective inthe long term. Since we installed the newcheck valve it has removed the issues withthe pump seals and has significantly reducedthe power requirements whilst improvingsafety and housekeeping.”

Finning sells Hewden, itsUK equipment rentalbusiness

www.hub-4.com/directory/7230

Hanson scoopsBritish Precastproject award An office development onHanson's former brick workssite at Stewartby inBedfordshire, has won the 2010British Precast ConcreteFederation's 'best project'award.

The 63,500 ft2 building, which has aBREEAM excellent rating andshowcases Hanson's productrange, has two wings of officespace linked by a central hub. Itwas planned, designed and built bya Hanson project team led byproject manager Duncan Edwards. The building is naturally ventilated, demonstrating the effectiveness ofmasonry construction in reducingenergy consumption, throughthermal mass, and incorporatesrainwater harvesting, increasedinsulation, night-time cooling andsolar shading.

Precast concrete was used tocreate the striking central staircaseand exposed ceilings, which bothuse the Hanson Cobiax flooringsystem. This saved over 200 tonnesof CO2 compared to a conventionalconcrete flooring system. Theprecast elements also help to makethe building thermally efficient.

Finning International has soldHewden, its UK equipment rentalbusiness, for gross proceeds of£110.2 million to an affiliate of SunEuropean Partners, LLP, theEuropean adviser to Sun CapitalPartners. The considerationcomprises cash of £90.2 million, aninterest bearing 5-year loan notereceivable of £20 million and a 5%equity warrant subject to certainconditions being met. Finning willuse the proceeds primarily toreduce debt.

“After a comprehensive review, wehave determined that for strategic andfinancial reasons, it is in ourshareholders' best interest to divestHewden,” said Mike Waites, presidentand chief executive officer of FinningInternational. “While we believe thatHewden's broad product offeringcombined with our recent restructuringand national accounts focus will serveit well in the future, owning a large,short-term rental business operatingseparately from our UK dealershipdoes not align with our strategicobjectives. Finning remains fullycommitted to the UK Caterpillardealership and its employees who arestrongly positioned to serve theconstruction, mining and powersystems markets.”

“Going forward, Finning's UKdealership will continue to work closelywith our plant hire customers to placeCaterpillar equipment into the UKequipment rental market,” added AndyFraser, managing director of FinningUK Group. “Our market approach is toprovide total solutions withextraordinary service and Caterpillarworld class products. We are confidentwe can demonstrate the value ofFinning to Hewden's new owners andmaintain a productive commercialrelationship with Hewden.

“This is a continuation of our journeytowards a new Finning and the finalstep in rationalizing our UK operations.Combined sale proceeds from thistransaction, Hewden Tools, and thedealership's Materials Handlingdivisions total almost $600 million,”noted Mike Waites. "We have a greatbusiness model going forward and arecompletely focused on driving theoperating performance and valuepotential of Finning.”

Hewden covers 63 locations in the UKand has 1300 employees. The existingHewden commercial centre inManchester is proposed to be the newhead office for Hewden. Finning hasagreed to provide transitional servicesto Hewden.

Finning UK will continue to operate 20branches in the UK with 1470employees serving Caterpillardealership customers throughout theUK based from its head office inCannock, Staffordshire.

Finning meanwhile has announced a 3year service/support-led deal for nineitems of Caterpillar equipment worth inexcess of £1m, with Raymond BrownGroup for use in its construction, minerals and recycling divisions.

The deal includes five Cat 320DLexcavators, two Cat 962H wheelloaders, one Cat 966H wheel loaderand a Cat M318DL Material handler, with a guaranteed 3 year uptimepromise for every machine.

The machines are fully backed up witha 3 year warranty and service package, guaranteeing Raymond Brown themost cost effective, efficient owningand operating costs. Also included inthe deal was an industry first 3 yearguaranteed uptime Lastability promisefor all the machines, meaningRaymond gets Finning support for thefull life of the machine.

Commenting on the deal with Finning,Raymond Brown Group plant director,Mark Isaac said: “Even though thecountry is officially out of the recession, the current climate is still verychallenging. However as a forwardthinking and well-run business, werecognised that there would besignificant financial benefits in placingan order of this nature at this time. Notonly would we have the most up todate fleet in the market, that wouldgive us the ability to ramp up ouroperations in a recovery, we wouldalso be able to benefit fromcompetitive pricing and equipmentavailability.

“Learning from our recent experience,we have now moved to more servicedelivery approach to our fleetpurchasing decision making process, where the overall cost of ownership, servicing and performance per litre offuel, is more important than unitpurchase price for example.

“What we also needed to be confidentwith in terms of this purchase decisionwas that we selected a supplierbusiness in Finning and Caterpillar thatis here to stay, not only from aproduction point of view but from aservice delivery perspective, as we arenot prepared to compromise on this.”

MPA memberswin topEuropeanSustainableDevelopmentAwards

Two MPA member companies, Lafarge Aggregates and HansonUK, won top prizes at the European Aggregates Association(UEPG) Sustainable Development Awards in Munich on 27 May.Hanson won the overall 'Social Pillar' category and was presentedwith the Health and Safety Best Practice Award for CriggionQuarry in Shropshire, whilst Lafarge won the Restoration BestPractice Special Award for the National Memorial Arboretum inAlrewas, Staffordshire.Nigel Jackson, chief executive MPA, said: “Two of our members winningtop prizes at European level is an excellent achievement and an accoladewe can all be proud of. Health and Safety is an absolute priority for MPAmembers. Our aim is to drive down the number of reportable injuries andachieve Zero Harm: we succeeded in beating our own 'Hard Target2009' and have now set an even more ambitious health and safetytargets for the next 5 years.“The 'Safer by Design' voluntary initiative which Hanson UK played a keyrole in pioneering with the MPA has received great internationalrecognition and support and is now an official UEPG project. Thisinitiative further demonstrates MPA's commitment to improving healthand safety across the whole supply chain.”Nigel added, “The National Memorial Arboretum is an outstandingexample of restoration which also won MPA's top national prize forrestoration. We are pleased the importance of high quality restoration inthe UK as part of our contribution to sustainable development isrecognised in these European Awards.”Hanson's winning submission for Criggion Quarry demonstrated how thecompany responded to repeated injury incidents involving falls frommobile plant, by commissioning an in-company survey of all UK mobileplant to identify and install remedial measures. Machines were inspectedfor evidence of defective design and 550 individual machine reports weregenerated, covering 260 items of mobile plant. Managers and staff co-operated positively and installed a wide range of practical health andsafety improvements, reducing accident potential at all company sites.Hanson had previously won the 'TUC Trophy' under MPA's nationalHealth and Safety Awards Scheme 2008 and knowledge from this surveyprovided the nucleus to formulating the 'Safer by Design' initiative viahttp://www.Safequarry.com.The award-winning submission from Lafarge Aggregates outlined thedevelopment and importance of the National Memorial Arboretum.Lafarge Aggregates completed Restoration of the site where the NationalMemorial Arboretum now stands in the 1990s. As well as providing theland, Lafarge has been instrumental in the creation and rapid growth ofthe Arboretum. Now the Arboretum represents over 150 groups - militaryand other; it employs over 20 people; has over 100 regular volunteers;and nearly 300,000 people passed through the gates during 2008. Thecontinued expansion of this special wildlife haven is being managed inconjunction with Staffordshire Wildlife Trust. The Trust has helpedencourage a rich diversity of wildlife throughout a wide variety of habitats.

Lafarge celebrateshealth & safety trioof achievementsLafarge A&C UK, part of the LafargeGroup, is celebrating a trio of majorachievements in health and safety. Firstup is Lafarge being the first major to meet theMPA target for all Appointed Persons (suchas quarry foremen or managers) at UKquarries to have a recognised qualificationthat demonstrates their competence in safetymanagement. This important target, established by the MPA to help substantiallyreduce accidents, has been achieved throughLafarge A&C UK's ongoing commitment andinvestment in training and development, suchas its Continuous Professional Development(CPD) programme with the Institute ofQuarrying, its Leeds University MSCprogramme and its continuous innovation ofsafety processes. Lafarge's AppointedPersons have attained SHE (Safety Health &Environment) NVQ qualifications.

The second achievement is being recognised,by 2009 Mineral Products Association (MPA)figures, as the safest UK quarry operator by afactor of 5 compared to its nearest majorcompetitor.

Finally, comes entry into the worldwideLafarge Health and Safety Excellence Club. The club features the safest Businesses fromacross the 79 countries in which the LafargeGroup operates measures a range ofchallenging Health & Safety performanceindicators including achieving a frequency ratefor Lost Time Incidents (incidents causing anyemployee to be off work for more than 1 day)of less than 1 incident per million man hoursworked

Jeremy Greenwood, managing director -Readymix, who holds executive responsibilityfor safety across Lafarge A&C UK's three UKBusinesses (Aggregates, Readymix Concreteand Asphalt, Contracting & Paving), said:“Safety is our number one priority. Ensuringour employees, the visitors to our sites andcontractors with whom we partner us aresafe, in everything they do, is central to ourphilosophy and our way of life. We aretherefore very proud of these achievements. We will continue to take health and safety inour industry, and in UK PLC, to the nextlevel.”

Green jobs and skills are an essential element of the lowcarbon agenda and are continually at the heart ofdiscussions about the country's economic recovery.Inevitably companies will be under increased pressure toensure that training for new skills has a low carbon elementto it.Mentor Training, provider of nationwide training courses tothe Quarrying, Recycling and Bulk Handling Materialsindustries has been looking at what this means for mobileplant operator training. When it comes to how the machine is operated there aretwo hot topics in the carbon footprint league table, fuelefficiency and fuel consumption. On average a machinesmajor operating cost is fuel, which is likely to be more than

its initial purchase cost, if operated inefficiently this willwithout doubt have an impact on any company's bottomline. While skilled operators know how to get the job done withthe equipment they work with in the required time, little orno thought in the past was given to the machine operatingefficiency and how the operation impacted on total fuelconsumption and cost.Training operators to be safe, efficient and effective in theirjob is the main objective of any Mentor Training course.Product manager, Steve Parfitt explained: “Operator trainingis and should be a valuable investment for any companyregardless of size and operation. We have worked hard toensure that our courses cover key aspects that will helpeducate operators to use equipment in the safest, mostproductive and cost effective way. From correct start upprocedures and operating techniques through to correctloading, dumping, bucket position and brake wear and tear, all of which can impact on the levels of CO2 produced bythe machine.”

A new washing unit removescontamination with up To 75% lesswater than standard washingequipment

The Hydro-Clean washing unit from WS Tyler effectivelycleans deleterious material from aggregate, industrialminerals and metals while reducing water consumption byup to 75% over traditional log washers. Taking a maximumfeed material size of up to 150 mm into its vertical drum, the Hydro-Clean employs high-pressure nozzles, rotating at90 rpm, to spray up to 90% recycled water on the materialwith pressures up to 200 bars. The washing unit removessilt and clay particles as small as 63 microns from mineralmixtures and, with its short retention times, can process upto 400 tonnes, depending on model size and application.

Due to itscompact size andweight, overalloperating andstructural costsare considerablylower than withtraditionalwashing systems, which also requiremore equipmentand a greaterfootprint. Atraditionalwashing systemcan require up tothree screensalong with a logwasher or screw. With a Hydro-Clean unit, theproducer onlyneeds anadditional washscreen for theHydro-Clean'sdischargedmaterial.

The Hydro-Clean is suitable for use in clay-heavy materialdeposits. The dirty material is fed via hopper to a verticalwashing drum, where high-pressure nozzles mounted at thetop rotate and spray the material with water. The waterstreams spread and wash the material at pressures of up to200 bars, effectively interacting with the material to breakup agglomerates and clean the particles of stubbornmaterial. The turbulence in the drum creates additionalscrubbing and abrasive forces that enhance the cleaningprocess as the material travels down the drum cylinder. Andbecause high-pressure streams of water are injected intoareas of the rock, such as holes and cracks, that aredifficult to reach with traditional cleaning methods like logwashers or screws, the end result is a cleaner product thatgenerates higher selling value. In addition, many producersuse this unit to turn material that was once dirty waste intorevenue. During the cleaning process, the washed material works itsway down the drum and exits onto a discharge conveyorthat leads to a standard wash screen, which removes anyremaining dirt or clay still on the stone as it fractionates thematerial. The resulting dirty water flows throughpolyurethane screen mesh installed in the sides of thewashing drum and is collected by a waste water pipe, which sends the water to a treatment system for additionalfine screening. The Hydro-Clean consumes little water and power. Waterconsumption ranges from 27 to 211 gpm, depending onapplication and model size-compared to log washers thatcan require up to 800 gpm of water. Power requirements forthe Hydro-Clean are no higher than 225 kW on its largestmodel. When compared to conventional systems, theHydro-Clean experiences little wear with a maintenance-

friendly design that allows for easy exchange of the fewstandard components that are subject to wear. The Hydro-Clean is available in four model sizes that produce 20 to400 TPH, depending on the application. The distance between the washing rotor and the materialbed in the Hydro-Clean is variable and allows the system toadapt to various material types. Level sensors located atthe material feed inlet provide exact data to the PLC controlunit, ensuring a consistent material flow into the system.

Metal + Waste Recycling investsin dust suppression units

www.hub-4.com/directory/12849

Following extensive comparisonsand appraisals of mobile dustsuppression equipment in the UK -and after a site demonstration of aDustBoss DB-60 - Metal + WasteRecycling has taken delivery of 10of these versatile dust suppressorsfrom UK importer INMALO. Fiveunits are wheeled and the othersare skid versions, with themachines being deployed in anumber of Metal + Waste'slocations throughout the UK.

Metal + Waste Recycling is one of thecountry's largest metals recyclingspecialists, with a series of sitesstrategically located around the UK,processing, reclaiming and recycling awide range of ferrous and non-ferrousmetals, C&D, industrial andcommercial waste for re-use inmanufacturing new productsworldwide. The company specialises infactory collections and total wastemanagement, including WEEE and ELVprocessing, fragmentising, shearingand baling, with export marketspredominantly served by containerisedreclaimed materials and foundry-readysecondary metals.

The very nature of the business meansthat dust creation is unavoidable. Metal+ Waste has always paid particularattention to the environmental impactdust can cause, with tailor-made staticdust suppression systems installed atall their operations to ensure maximumcontrol of the problem. However, thecompany has found that static dustsuppression is not always sufficientand has taken steps to seek anefficient and cost-effective solution byinvesting in DustBoss units. “We hadtested the market and looked at anumber of mobile dust suppressors”said Metal + Waste director John Rice“and were impressed with the buildquality and efficacy of the DustBossDB-60. INMALO loaned us a unit ondemonstration,” he continued, “and wewere impressed with its performance, which convinced us that these werethe dust suppressors we should investin. The mobility of the DustBoss DB-60means that we can take it to any areaon our sites - be it stockpiling orprocessing - set it up and have it

running in no time at all. We are findingthat the dust-suppressed areascovered are far greater than we canachieve with just a static system and,in effect, we can take our dustsuppression to where it is neededmost and move it on to another areaquickly and easily”.

The DB-60 uses a series of 30specially-designed brass nozzles toatomize water droplets to the optimumsize for maximum particle attractionand coverage, launching them with apowerful 25 hp fan. The unit'ssuppression efficiency derives from itsability to balance a number of criticalproperties that tend to work againstone another, such as droplet size, spray pattern, air flow, range andvelocity. The ducted fan delivers 850m3 of air flow per minute through thebarrel, giving it a throw of more than60 m. The DB-60 has an adjustableelevation from 0-500 and a 400

oscillating head which can cover nearlyhalf an acre and the wheeled mobileunit can be easily located to whereverit's specifically needed.

Technology tohelp operatorstrack andmeasure wasteA range of hardware andsoftware solutions that providewaste management operatorswith the ability to meet thechallenges around tracking, weighing and monitoring ofdomestic refuse andtrade/commercial waste hasbeen launched by OTTO UK.The solutions deal with many of theday-to-day problems experiencedby operators in the private andpublic sectors, including:Identification and weighing ofdomestic, trade and front loadercontainers; monitoring and trackingof containers; containeradministration; route managementand optimisation; online monitoringand systems for pay-as-you-throwor reward for recycling

The OTTO 'c-modules' wastemanagement systems deliver tailor-made solutions to deal with a widerange of operational andmanagement problems includingEuropean standards complianceissues.

The basis for all the modules isOTTO 'c-ware', which has beendesigned to handle all data fromseveral modules.

A number of functions can then beachieved, including charging andbilling, map visualisation, containerdistribution, chip retro-fitting,inventory management and fleetmanagement.

Two key modules are 'c-ident',which utilises radio frequencyidentification to enable users toquickly and accurately identifycontainers, and 'c-scale', whichprovides dynamic weighingtechnology on vehicles.

The OTTO 'c-ident' module is achip reader mounted on the combof the lifter, which automaticallyidentifies the container (andcustomer) and time/date ofemptying as well as the GPSposition of each lift.

And the OTTO 'c-scale' weighingsystem is a dynamic system basedon state of the art vibrating ▼

Ground levelsolutions forPortway Plant A new ALLU processing bucket -supplied by Finlay Central toPortway Remediation - is helpingto transform derelict, contaminated land for a socialhousing development, without theneed to remove materials tolandfill.

Using a proven methodology involving an ALLU bucket to fragment thecontaminated soil, Portway Remediation - a division of Portway Plant - iscarrying out the treatment by adding bacteria into the soil as it passesthrough the ALLU bucket. The new ALLU bucket joins the plant fleet, which already includes anotherALLU bucket fitted with cutting teeth, forming part of a new process usinggreen waste and sub soils to produce topsoil. This method further reduces the cost of importing topsoil for theredevelopment and recycles a waste stream. Currently Portway Remediation is using both ALLU buckets on site inLeicester to treat 17,000 m3 of hydrocarbon impacted material, to allow theredevelopment of the site by Westleigh Developments. When the first phase of development is completed, 196 new dwellings willbe created. Ian Chambers, a director of Portway Remediation, which is based inRedditch, said: “ALLU buckets are key to the remediation process for ourapplication. The process involves using attachments to each bucket tospray the bacteria onto the soil as it is fragmented. Different levels ofcontamination and soil types require specific attention, and the ALLUbuckets allow us to target and deliver the necessary treatments.“We have been using ALLU buckets for eight years. We have tried differentsizes and configurations and found the best for us is the SM3 -17 model. This is 1.7 m wide and has three rotating shafts and we find our VolvoEC210CL excavator copes with very well with this type of machinery.”Neil Bailey, sales engineer of Finlay Central - part of the Finlay Group ofcompanies - said: “Before this bio-remediation process was developed, making good the land would have necessitated the removal of all thecontaminated soil to landfill and refilling it with uncontaminated earth.“The use of ALLU buckets on the site provides a sustainable way ofconverting brownfield sites, which have been subjected to contaminationover the years into land ready for development. This process also reducesroad usage by heavy lorries transporting materials in and out of the site, animportant consideration in built-up residential areas.”

Today, approximately 21% of thesand and gravel used in Englandand Wales is supplied by the marineaggregate industry. In the south eastof England, the hotbed of the UKconstruction industry, a third of itssand and gravel comes from the UKseabed. As the land owner of thatseabed, The Crown Estate holdssole mineral rights. Havingpreviously taken a rather passiverole in the sector, it now seeks topartner industry as Ian Selby, MarineMinerals Manager, at The CrownEstate, explains: “We have abalancing act as we have a duty toenhance both the revenue and valueof the estate but must also delivervalue to customers. So we want towork closely with the industry as apartner working for its developmenttogether with government, regulatorsand agencies.”

Coming from the industry, Ian'sappointment itself is a sign of TheCrown Estate becoming moreinvolved. Trained as a marinegeologist, Ian joined Tarmac over 20years ago and subsequently workedabroad in various locations ondredging and reclamation projects. Most recently Ian has beenoperations director with HansonAggregates Marine. Ian believes thiswealth of experience will be a great

help in developing partnerships withthe sector.

There's a lot happening in theMarine environment at the moment, perhaps the most significant beingthe Marine Bill, which has receivedRoyal Assent. Under the new Marineand Coastal Access Act, thegovernment will have a duty toestablish a network of MarineConservation Zones to help protectthreatened marine species andhabitats. There's the Marine PolicyStatement (MPS) that will bringtogether marine activities and clarifypriorities, under the umbrella ofsustainable development. MarineSpatial Planning is being introducedoffshore over the next few years, which hasn't previously been inplace. The Marine Bill also createsthe independent MarineManagement Organisation that willoversee marine planning andlicensing with advice from its keyadvisors.

“With the added focus of the MarineBill, we think the value of marineaggregates will become moreconsistently recognised. In the pastit's has fallen between governmentdepartments. This is an opportunityto let everybody understand the roleof marine aggregates in the future.”

A lot of this value is derived fromtheir source. Geologically, marineand land aggregates are exactly thesame but, as Ian points out, “marineaggregates are very clean so there isvery little waste in the process - nofines, no scrubbing or intensivewashing. They are also well sortedand minimal crushing is required. Inparticular the quality of sand is verygood, which often you don't find onland.”

Tonnages of marine aggregateslanded in the UK have remainedpretty consistent over the lastdecade at around 25 million tonnesa year. Each year approximately 14mtonnes goes into England and Wales(1 m tonnes goes Wales) there areno landings in Scotland or NorthernIreland. The south east of Englandclaims the most, with some 7 milliontonnes landing in the London andThames region alone. What does notgo to the UK is exported to the nearcontinent. Marine Aggregates arenot only used in concrete. There'sbeach restoration, coastal defenceand reclamation for portdevelopment, activities that typicallyclaim between 1-4 million tonnes ayear.

Ross Matthews talks to Ian Selby, Marine Minerals andDredging Manager at The Crown Estate, aboutdevelopments in marine aggregates and the role of TheCrown Estate.

The UK leads the world in marine aggregates and is about to enter a newcycle of business that through developing legislation, more efficientdredging and market opportunities, sets the scene for an increase in thesector's importance, with The Crown Estate playing an increasingly activepartnership role with the industry.

tonnages flat; the current fleet ofdredging ships is operating atcapacity. However the marineaggregate industry is approaching anew business cycle. With currentlicences coming to an end and theships built to correspond to thoselicenses getting older, both licensesand ships need replacing. “So theindustry is gearing itself up to thenext business cycle where it will bemore efficient,” says Ian.

Sustainability

There are extensive reserves of sandand gravel offshore arguably lying inless sensitive locations than on land.A question we could ask ourselves is“which is the most environmentallysensitive area - the English Channelor the lower Thames Valley?” asksIan. “Of course there will beenvironmental impacts that have tobe managed, but the marine optionis particularly attractive as a result ofthe delivery of large volumes rightinto the centre of our coastalconurbations without any disruptionof our daily lives. A ship carries 5000tonnes while a truck carries 20tonnes - this significantly minimisesroad use.”

The new business cycle will be animportant part of the sector's

sustainability plan. The currentlicensed area for dredging marineaggregates is approximately 1300km2, though 90% of dredgingactually takes place within 48 km2.Relicensing will see this areareduced and the new ships will meanthat dredging will be more efficient.

Part of managing sustainability isensuring that dredging stays withindesignated areas. “Many years agothe industry was accused ofdredging in sensitive locations. However, since 1993 all the shipshave been monitored so everybodyknows where they are. Activity is,therefore, very tightly managed andeach cargo is tracked.”

The Crown Estate issues aproduction Licence area only if theoperator is in possession of aDredging Permission (DP) issued bythe government through the MMO, aprocedure which includes thesubmission of an EnvironmentalImpact Assessment (EIA).

“The Crown Estate works withindustry to report and improvesustainability performance whetheras safe operating practices withmunitions or a heritage protocol. Inaddition to this work with theindustry, we are developing our own

sustainability plans that we hope willbe formalised in the next year.

“In terms of carbon emissions, studies have shown that commonlycarbon levels are not dissimilar tosupply from land-based aggregatessources. Even so, there aresignificant opportunities for reductionof marine emissions in the future, mainly based around efficiency anduse of plant.”

When it comes to coastal defence orrecharging a beach with 1 milliontonnes of sand, such as inBournemouth, there's no alternativeto marine aggregates. It's also aresource for strategic renewableenergy projects linked to climatechange. Significant supplies ofmarine aggregates will be needed forany further development of the UK'snuclear power sector and theresource is also well placed for wavepower barrages and offshore windturbines. “So Marine aggregates canmake a valuable contribution torenewable energy as well. On theevidence we see, the future formarine aggregates is a bright one.”

Sandvik launches itslatest development inmobile scalping Sandvik Mining and Construction made its firstappearance at Hillhead as one company following themerger of Rammer into the Sandvik brand, and theacquisition of Fintec and Extec in 2007.Sandvik's QE440 tracked scalper, received its global launchat Hillhead, to cater for the serious aggregate producer: itboasts 40% more screening area than its predecessor - theQE340. The stockpiling conveyors are both wider, andhigher, to deal with both the increased production capacityand facilitate larger stockpiles. Punched plate, heavy duty mesh, rock fingers or grizzly barscan be fitted to the top deck while heavy duty mesh orfingers can be fitted to the bottom to match specificapplication and material requirements. The QE440 comescomplete with a more powerful, yet economical engine.Applications include the screening of heavy overburden at aquarry face, pre-screening and scalping, recycling ofconstruction and landfill waste and separation of cohesiveaggregates. Also new is the QI440 HS, a heavy duty, tracked, selfpropelled impact crusher with an on board re-circulatingsystem, double and double deck screen to allow twoscreened products to be produced. Additionally, theoversize can be re-circulated back into the impactor, withoutre-handling, or the conveyor can be hydraulically rotated toproduce a clean oversize product. The independent pre-screen allows for maximised scalpingprior to feed to the impactor, and can produce a screenedproduct from the side conveyor. Customers can gain agreater return on their investment through the facility toproduce accurately sized products for immediate use.All conveyors are hydraulically foldable to speed transportand set up time.

avoiding duplication of machinery. Additionally the Aggwash allows operators to work inspace and emission constrained sites because of its compact size and zero exhaustemissions.Products that can be produced include ferrous metal, 0-5 mm sand, 5-10 mm aggregate,10-20 mm aggregate and 20-40 mm aggregate. Polyurethane screen meshes can beeasily changed to produce different grades of stone as required. Fintan added: “It was originally aimed at C&D markets but it can take virgin andhazardous matter also, giving it a wide range of applications, so we have interest from avariety of customers. The unit brings this ability into the price range of many companies.”

Haulier ventures intoquarrying industry

HD Ricketts Group is powering into new markets fromits base at Weeford Quarry, with a new Terex Finlay683 Supertrak three-way split mobile screen, recentlysupplied by Finlay Central. The new screen is already proving a valuable and versatileaddition at the West Midlands site - producing six sizes ofvaluable single-size material to complement the existingmaterial processed from the quarry's static crushers. A third generation Birmingham-based haulage business, which has supplied sand and gravel for decades, HDRicketts moved into new markets after being licensed tooperate Weeford Quarry - located on the A38 betweenLichfield and Birmingham. HD Ricketts, which has its headquarters in Erdington, is amajor supplier of sand and gravel products in the WestMidlands, employing 36 people, with a modern haulage fleetof 23 Volvo and DAF vehicles, comprising of 8, 6 and 4wheelers and articulated trucks. The business also includesa dedicated bagging plant, located in Rugeley. By being licensed to operate Weeford, the company nowhas complete control of its supply operations, from thequarrying of top quality primary aggregates, the washingand processing, through to bagging and delivery to clients. Quarried materials from Weeford include building, concretingand plastering sand, washed and graded gravels anddecorative gravels. Adrian Ricketts, managing director of HD Ricketts, says: “Asa haulage business selling sand and gravel, we decided thata natural progression for the business was to make our ownsand and gravel product.

“It gives us the flexibility to deliver bespoke products, andsupply exactly what the customer needs.

The Terex Finlay screen enables us to process a variety ofsingle-sized material. The quarry was producing three sizesof product, but now offers 14 products.

“The screen delivers six of those, 6 mm, 10 mm, 20 mm, 40mm, and 75 mm down to 20 mm. By producing more singlesize products the material is much more marketable andoffers greater value. The screen is also fully mobile, with aremote control operation, to enable movement across thesite.

As well as purchasing material processing equipment, we'vealso hired machinery as needed from Finlay Central andagain found the service to be excellent.”

This is the second Terex Finlay machine supplied to HDRicketts by Finlay Central. Five years ago, the Group tookdelivery of a second hand Finlay 590 Hydra grid, which isused by Ricketts to make screened soil from excavationwaste. As well as the quarrying of materials and haulage business,HD Ricketts provides recycled products, including washedgravels, washed sands, blended sands, recycled MOT,graded top soil and crushed rock. It also provides JCB hire. The sand excavated from the site is the deep-red, highquality material typical of the West Midlands quarries. The move into quarrying is the latest diversification for thefamily business, now under the leadership of managingdirector Adrian Ricketts, the third generation of the Ricketts'family at the helm of the company.

Canning Conveyor has supplied a new groundconveyor system for Penryn Quarry at Bethesda, near Bangor, North Wales. The quarry is theheadquarters of Welsh Slate, which has beenproducing roofing slate since the 13th century andis one of four quarries in North Wales operated bythe company, which has been supplying the worldwith high quality roofing slate and other materialsfor over 200 years. Turning over approximately £27million per annum Welsh Slate is the world's leadingmanufacturer of durability and quality roofingproducts.

Canning was awarded the contract to design, manufacture and supply (under a rental agreement) anew ground conveyor and associated equipmentincluding a steel tunnel.

The new 75 m long, troughed belt ground conveyorsupplied is driven by a SuperDrive motorised pulley andcan accept an average of 300 tph and a maximum of400 tph of slate with an average size between 150 -250mm.

The new ground conveyor runs over generally levelground (with an approximate rise of 2 m in total) part ofwhich passes through a new 2.5 m diameter, 6 m longsteel tunnel, which was designed to accept conveyorintermediate sections. As the tunnel is situated within ahaul route Canning designed the tunnel to take up to 90tonnes in weight (the equivalent of two articulated trucks, side by side).

Driven by a 630 mm diameter SuperDrive (partiallyceramic) lagged in combi - red diamond the conveyorsystem included a high-tension bend pulley, jib dischargedrum, loop bend drum and primary and secondary belt

scrapers. A discharge chute with integral crash box andhinged inspection hatch complete with all guarding completedthe specification.

In addition to the conveyor installation Canning also re-sited anexisting hopper/feeder all completed with the Christmasshutdown period.

Canning's SuperDrive motorised drum supplied for the newconveyor is supplied pre-filled with synthetic oil. Nomaintenance is required other than the recommended oil andoil seal change every 30,000 hours in comparison to the use ofnormal oil, which offers a service life of only 10,000 hours.Based on an 8 hour per day working week the motorised drumneeds only one service approximately every 15 years.

The project was completed successfully and in the agreed timeframe. Monty Williams, production manager, of Welsh Slate, comments that the order was “delivered and completed toschedule, with excellent workmanship and high Health andsafety standards.”

Lone worker solutionfor the quarryingsector

www.hub-4.com/directory/914www.hub-4.com/directory/435

In Touch has now released the Lone Worker AlertSystem it was developing last year, as reported inHub 11. The unit has been designed as an aid tohealth and safety for lone workers within thequarrying and construction sectors and toaddress the specific needs of the quarry manager,

There are a number of lone worker products on themarket but In Touch says that few have been designedwith the quarrying sector in mind. Many systems usethe mobile phone network to communicate, howeverdue to the very nature of the industry and remotenessof most quarries, mobile network coverage cannot beguaranteed and in many circumstances this type of loneworker system would not workreliably.

This solution isoffered as a 'bolt-on' feature to anexisting radiosystem. The loneworker carries a two-way radio, which hasbeen programmed toemit a continuoustone every 20minutes or so. Ifthe worker is wellthen he/she simplypresses a button tocancel out thesignal, thusindicating thatthey are fitand well. However, if theworker cannotrespond due to accidentor illness, then the radio willsend a pre-recorded message toup to four pre-programmed numbersto identify that the lone worker alarm has beentriggered.

The system isn't designed to give an absoluteemergency response, however it can substantiallyreduce the health & safety risks associated with loneworking. The system's reliability is enhanced byworking in conjunction with two-way radios - a triedand tested method of communication that still the mosteffective solution for the challenging environment of aquarry.

Perfect planningprevents patheticperformance ......

“Budget, what budget”, that is whatmost sales and marketing managersare now faced with when it comes todoing events and exhibitions. Goneare the days when you don't have tojustify what your ROI might be whenplanning to exhibit at an event.Calculating how you spend the last bit of yourbudget to make sure you get as much or even morefor the following year is not even an option thesedays. But it is not all bad, because it has started tomake people think about why they are even going toan event, and what the chances are of converting allthe time effort and money into a return in salesrevenue.

When I think of all the events and exhibitions wehave helped are clients to deliver and how manytimes we have thought “ they haven't got a clue onhow to make this work” are too numerous tomention. At last people are now starting to reallythink about every aspect of their event, not just thestand space, and design but the marketing, the stafftraining, and what are the key massages they wantto get across to their potential clients.

Setting clear goals that are achievable is one of themost important ingredients when making a decisionto attend an exhibition. This is something that wehave always worked towards at Showplace. One ofthe first questions we ask our clients is “why are yougoing”, and secondly “what do you want to get outof the event” simple enough, but you would beamazed at the variety of answers that come back.

Showplace has always worked with its clients toensure they are getting “best value” when planningtheir event or exhibition, making sure our clients getpositive feedback from their event, reach theirobjectives, and exceed their ROI.

it's as simple as that, or is it!

Minimising environmental impact is akey concern of the management andstaff of the Oetelshofen quarrycompany in Wuppertal, Germany.Formed in 1900, the company nowemploys 95 staff, produces 2 milliontons of limestone products, andannually turns over 35 million Euros. But although they have experiencedimpressive growth over the last fewyears, they are keen to ensure thatoperations continue in anenvironmentally friendly manner as ispossible.

To maximise its productivity butminimise environmental impact,Oetelshofen has invested in brand newfiring technology, as well as recentlyswitching to the latest in Sandvik wearprotection. Moritz Iseke, joint managingdirector, explains: “Our recentinvestments in equipment at the plantmeans that for the next 50 years thequarrying of high quality limestone atthis site is safeguarded. When we haveexhausted those resources the engineerswill have to deal with quarrying belowgroundwater levels.”

Operational efficiency is not the onlyconcern for the company as beingproud Wuppertal natives the integrityand sustainability of the operation is ofprimary concern. In Moritz Iseke ownwords: “Besides caring for ouremployees, we also feel committed tothe natural environment, and consider itour duty to protect our neighbours fromany emissions from the plant. This ofcourse includes the reduction of anynoise emissions.”

The company initially looked to Sandvikfor assistance when lining the 6 m2 feedhopper of a kiln. This was accomplishedwith Sandvik's WT7000 dual hardnessrubber wear plates. The modular systemwas easy to install, and reduced thenoise emissions by 50% as experiencedby the human ear. Six months later thecompany management decided to equipthe new 120 m2 hopper, again withWT7000 rubber linings. The dualhardness structure of the linings made agreat impression with the companymanagement who were keen to enjoythe same benefits they had experiencedwith the kiln hopper.

A major challenge however was tochoose the right material for the hopper, which has been designed to deal withan annual production capacity of500,000 tons of limestone. The hopperrequires a heavy duty lining as it will beloaded by a 60 ton capacity truck, witha product size of up to 140 mm.

Eagles undisturbed by noise atOetelshofen quarry

After discussions between management and Sandvik technical staff, it wasdecided to use 1,500 pieces of 50 mm thick rubber liners mounted withwelding studs. This has proved to be a particularly attractive solution aswhen the sharp edged stone has worn out the plates the individual 300x300mm modules may be quickly, cost-effectively and safely replaced.

As the liners are made of dual hardness rubber, without any steelreinforcement, they are easily cut out and fully recyclable. Sandvik's projectmanager for the site installation, Selim Sahin, explains: “Thanks to thispatented modular system the base of the hopper is protected against cracksand deformation. It therefore retains its original shape, and the liner lipprotects against fines infiltration between the gaps. In addition to thosebenefits, the service life is tripled. None of these features are achievable withconventional steel linings.”

Outlining some additional benefits to the neighbours of the quarry, MoritzIseke proudly states: “The quarry hosts the largest European Eagle Owlpopulation in Europe. On average three owls per year are hatched at theOsterholz limestone quarry, and as the quarry operates only two shifts, theseflying night hunters will be grateful to Sandvik for their peaceful rest duringthe day.”

Due to the success of the installation, the protection of the eagle owls andimprovements in operational performance, Oetelshofen is now consideringusing Sandvik wear protection at the limestone quarry for all its future plans.Discussions are already ongoing at the site involving product and materialtesting, with new applications such as lining truck boxes or using ceramic /rubber wear protection liners - but not at the expense of the locals - humanor eagle owl.

Refurbished dryingdrum provesefficiency for Tarmac

Haith agrees UK Distributorship with CBB

Tarmac has recently had a drying drum at its BaystonHill site refurbished by BG Europa (UK) to enhance itsoperating efficiency.Prior to commencement it was jointly decided by BGE andTarmac that the safest method of works was to remove thedrum for subsequent refurbishment within the workshop. This decision removed any potential hazards associatedwith extended working within the confined space of thedrum in situ.

Over the Christmas period the drum was removed andtransported to the BGE workshop in Ashbourne, Derbyshirefor the replacement of the entire flight pattern.

BGE subsequently installed a modern flight design, whichincorporated insulation flights in the dryer combustion zone. The efficient flights lift the material and hold it around theperiphery of the drum, ensuring maximum exposure to theradiant heat from the flame. The remaining flights are

designed to provide an even veil across the drum in variousdensities depending on location. The veil exposes theaggregate to the combustion gases from the burner toinitially dry and then heat the aggregate to the requiredtemperature for asphalt production. It is important that theaggregate veil is even across the drum as if the veil is holedthe combustion gases will take the path of least resistancedown the drum, reducing drying efficiency.

The existing dryer was experiencing high levels of spillagefrom around the burner airplate causing operationaldifficulties. The drum manufacturer's design around thisarea was flawed; however a simple modification by BGE tothe drum end plate has corrected the problem.

The dryer was replaced in the New Year in time forproduction requirements.

Haith Industrial has signed a UKand Ireland distributorshipagreement with CBB, the Italianmanufacturer of decantercentrifuges for the separation andtreatment of the solid liquidprocess. for bulk bag dischargers

Let's face it; there are some bulk bags of compacted or hardened materialthat really are beyond economic recovery? Yes, you can sometimes use stand-alone hydraulic breakers/bulk bag conditioners to split the contents intolumps but these devices are time-consuming, costly and hog space. In certaininstances, they have been known to break bags open - spilling their contents. This is often because the contents of a bag have nowhere to flow during'conditioning'. Spiroflow's experience is that around 95% of compacted orotherwise difficult to discharge bulk bags will succumb to the 'earth-quaking'treatment imparted by one, or more, of the integral, cost effective 'massagers'offered for their comprehensive range of Bulk Bag Dischargers/Unloaders. Ofcourse, when installed on a Discharger, the massaged contents of the bag cancommence discharge, improving the effectiveness of the massagers all thetime.Pneumatic powered 'Massage' Paddles are used to aid the flow of cohesive, stickyand otherwise difficult non-free flowing materials. Spiroflow offer three types ofmassagers: side massagers - these can be moved vertically to ascertain the optimumposition but it is usually within the lower one third of the bag, base massagers breakup material that has become compacted across the base of the bag and cornermassagers ensure that maximum solid lump breaking forces are applied from oppositecross corners. It also ensures all four corners of the bag are truly emptied. They work in two ways: one by 'earth-quaking' compacted or cohesive materials tobreak the bonds between particles - thus enabling them to flow more readily' and two:they push material from the extremities of the bag, where they may be supported byits flat bottom, to above the outlet spout where it has no option but to fall out of thebag. All the time that this massaging and discharging is taking place, Spiroflow's patentedspring support arms are stretching the bag and any liner vertically to ensure that noproduct is held up by folds in the bag or its liner.Spiroflow can conduct trials in its test facility or at the customer's site to identify theright type of massager, or combination of massagers. The company can predict thecorrect set up for these trials that the customer can witness in person or via a livevideo link as preferred.Because 'earth-quaked' lumps of product are not ideally suited for repackaging orfurther processing, Spiroflow also offers a variety of lump-breaker and sifting systems(which can also be an integral part of a Bulk Bag Discharger) to ensure that onlymaterial within the required specification is delivered to the packing or processingmachine. Spiroflow also offers both mechanical and pneumatic conveying systems forthe transfer of product to the next process.

Spiroflow has entered into ajoint venture with HorizonSystems of Lawrence,Kansas, USA to create acompany called Spiroflow-Horizon Systems to marketHorizon's expertise indesigning process systemsfor handling dry bulkmaterials throughout Europe.

Through a broad range ofproduct offerings, Spiroflow-Horizon Systems will offerthe full range of lean phasepneumatic conveying(pressure and vacuum). ATest Centre has beeninstalled within the SpiroflowTechnology Centre atClitheroe, Lancashire todemonstrate the capabilitiesand benefits of theirequipment to customers.

While there will be access tothe full range of mechanicalconveyors and bulk baghandling systemsmanufactured by Spiroflow,Spiroflow-Horizon Systemscan design, project manageand install systems that notonly include its own productlines, but also includeprocessing equipment suchas mills, mixers, sifters andmicro/minor batchingsystems.

Steve Remmers, managingdirector of Spiroflow-HorizonSystems, commented: “Weare excited to have thisopportunity to work withSpiroflow. There is muchsynergy between the twocompanies with proventechnologies that will bringbenefits to customers inEurope. Spiroflow bringstheir well establishedEuropean sales andmarketing capabilities to thetable, their expertise in theareas of ATEX and CEcompliance and, also, anestablished base from whichwe can operate.”

Flexco has added Rockline EZP-LS Limited SpacePre-cleaner to its line of conveyor belt cleaners. Acompact version of Flexco's current offering of pre-cleaners, the low-profile design of the RocklineEZP-LS boasts the same quality craftsmanship, material path options, and visual tension check asthe rest of the line. The EZP-LS also features anindustry-exclusive visual blade wear gauge built intothe tensioner, making it easy to check both tensionand wear. The Rockline EZP-LS is suitable for limited spaceapplications, including brick and block plants, road/mobileequipment, sand and gravel, and any other applicationswith severe space limitations and pulleys as small as 6 in.The 115 mm high EZP-LS blade has the same patented, faceted ConShear blade profile, allowing the blade torenew its cleaning edge as it wears. The blade can easilybe serviced with the one-pin blade replacement feature. The unit also features the Material Path Option. Flexcopioneered the Material Path Option, which reduces thedifferential blade wear in the centre of the urethaneblades. The option allows users to select the blade sizethat covers the belt's material path only, reducing the'smile effect' wear pattern. Utilising a blade that coversonly the material path boosts cleaning performance andextends the life of the blade.Like the EZP1, the compact LST tensioner on theRockline EZP-LS is self-contained and simple to adjust, making it easier to set the precleaner to the desiredtension and extending blade life. The EZP-LS, however, also contains a visual blade wear gauge.

“Flexco was the first to introduce a compression springtensioner that could be visually checked, and we continue toinnovate by enhancing the maintenance experience by includinga visual blade wear gauge,” said Ryan Grevenstuk, Flexcoproduct manager. “The tensioner allows the user to not onlycheck the blade tension, but also the blade wear with one quickreview of the tensioner.”

Belt maintenance and cleaning, along with the use of qualityreplacement parts, increases performance, extends the life ofbelt and conveyor components, and reduces downtime.

Pump delivers total life savings

www.hub-4.com/directory/313

Sand and gravel operations can achieve savings in totallife cycle costs with new the Linatex G4 Rubber andHard Metal Pumps, thanks to the design's combinationof efficiency with abrasion resistance. The Linatex G4 Rubber Pumps mark themselves out fromconventional units by incorporating genuine Linatex PremiumRubber Liners, which maximise service life in abrasive slurryand chemical applications. The range features hydraulicdesigns, which reduce internal turbulence and minimisepower draw, while offering ease of maintenance andserviceability. The benefits of the range have been demonstrated in the field. In one example, a major sand and gravel operationchallenged Linatex to cut overall operating costs within itscoarse and fine sand slurry applications. After consulting withLinatex Engineers, the operation replaced a conventional 8 in.,75 HP pump with a new 8-in., 60 HP Linatex G4 RubberPump in its coarse sand application. In the fine sandapplication, a standard 6 in., 30 HP pump was replaced witha new 6 in., 25 HP Linatex G4 Rubber Pump. ▼

Based upon 22,400 annual operating hours the new 8 in.pump delivered a 17.5% reduction in power draw over theconventional pump; while the 6 in. pump delivered a 43.75% reduction in power draw over the standard model. The second challenge was set by a large European wasterecycling organisation, which required a replacement feedpump that could offer improved efficiency and performance.Linatex was asked to supply a pump that would feed at aminimum of 7 bar end pressure, ensure longer wear life at areduced cost, backed up by reliable local support. The Linatex G4 Hard Metal Pump HSN100 (with packedgland and expeller seal) was solution supplied in thisinstance. It delivers the fine, flocculated, thixotropic, abrasiveslurry feed material from a sludge holding tank to the press. Still in service, the Linatex G4 Hard Metal Pump hasdelivered over 12 months part life as opposed to theprevious incumbent's pump, which only delivered a 6 monthpart life. In addition, the Linatex G4 Pump has delivered asaving of almost 70% on part costs. The increased pressure that the G4 Pump has delivered, hasnot only led to a drier filter cake being produced, but hasalso allowed more water to be recycled for use within thesystem. “With a long history of innovation supporting thedevelopment of the G4 Pump range, and demonstrableresults in the field, we are delighted with the new range'says Bruce Cooke, General Manager Linatex Europe. “Ourexperience across the globe, coupled with the considerableknowledge that our team of experts here in Europe haveaccumulated throughout their time in the industry hasresulted in a world class range of pumps, specifically suitedto the market here.”

www.hub-4.com/directory/507

Reaching out to new sectorsLinatex is a major player in sand and gravel productionindustry and wanted to appeal to more sectors with newG4 range and significantly increase its share of the $800mglobal market for Slurry pumps and spares. Europe andRussia account for 20% of this global market but hardmetal pumps account for 75% of that market, so onlymanufacturing rubber limits potential as a single sourcesupplier; Linatex wanted to get into more markets byhaving different pumps.

The Mk3 pump was essentially a facelifted Mk2. So in late2007, Linatex partnered with a small UK manufacturer ofhard metal pumps and saw the advantages of developinga new rubber pump to complement it using the samedrive frame to improve efficiency. The Linatex designteam in Asia and Europe devised a rubber pump thatgives a power saving of 20% over the Mark 3 pump andother pumps in the sector.

The type of particle size determines the type of pump. Forexample, sand would use the G4 rubber while bigparticles such as smashed hard rock, would use hardmetal pumps. With both options, Linatex now has a rangethat covers everything.

Applications include aggregate sand production andwater treatment sand filtration.

While it has a premium price, Linatex rubber also has upto four times the life of normal rubber, which lacks theelasticity of Linatex rubber, which comes from itsmolecular structure gives Linatex rubber it's elasticity -it's soft and stretchy but also thick, which makes it greatfor pumps and gives savings over the lifecycle of the unit.Tests in slurry have demonstrated the difference.

G4-200 & G4-150 pumps were installed in late July 2009on an existing Linatex sand classification and dewateringplant operated by Aggregate Industries, replacing LinatexLPIIIr pumps. The G4-200 handled 130 tph of -6 mmconcrete sand while the G4-150 handled 37 tph of -1.2mm Building Sand. Following a 9 month evaluation of thenew G4 Rubber Pump, Duncan McIntosh the quarryoperations manager of Aggregate Industries commented:“The new pumps have certainly met our requirements toreduce power consumption. At the same time, thesepumps are so much easier and safer to work on. Thelevels of wear to date have been impressive compared tothe old style pump.”

At a cost of £30m RockTron's new eco-mineral processing plantat Fiddler's Ferry, near Widnes, Cheshire is now fullyoperational. Designed to process 800,000 tpa of both fresh andstockpiled fly ash (PFA), this has immediate implications for theUK's cement and concrete industry in that RockTron can nowoffer a consistent supply of superior main constituents forcement and blended cements, which can outperform GGBS onprice.

The environmental benefits are highly significant, as over 100 milliontonnes of waste fly ash is currently dumped in long-term storage in UKlandfills. The technology developed by RockTron is designed toprocess 100% of both fresh and stockpiled fly ash.

The company's proprietary process offers five valuable new eco-minerals; two of the most significant are alumino-silicate solid glassspheres classified as Alpha & Delta. It is claimed that these twocementitious products will provide the single biggest environmentalopportunity for the cement and concrete industries to reduce CO2emissions over the next 25 plus years.

The company has calculated that, in the UK alone, by using 500,000tonnes of its eco-minerals on a one-to-one basis with CEM1 cement, some 400,000 tonnes of CO2 could be saved. RockTron Alpha fullyconforms to BS EN 450-1:2005 + A1:2007, and in fact exceeds thehighest standards on particle size fineness and very low levels of LOI(Loss On Ignition) - the carbon content.

The company's main aim is to demonstrate that its recycled materialscan outperform on quality, durability and price, especially when appliedin the cement and concrete industry.

RockTron commissioned Precia-Molen to design and install a fullyautomated loading and weighing system at the Fiddler's Ferry site, allowing vehicles to collect the eco minerals from the plant without theneed for intervention of by operators. Precia-Molen integrated itsGeneSYS system to RockTron business management system.

RockTron had four key criteria for the weighing and driver self-loadingsystems:

• Minimal staffing levels for vehicle control, weighing and loadingoperations.

• Fully integration with the existing RockTron sales order system.

• A robust and resilient system design to ensure 24/7 operation.

• To replace the normal out-loading procedures using a weighbridge.

To meet all RockTron's operation requirements Precia-Molen designeda bespoke GeneSYS3_based, weighing and site management system.

The three VS400, 18 m long surface-mounted weighbridges installedat the site allow vehicle arrivals 24 hours a day, receive despatchinstructions, load, weigh and exit in an entirely automated operation.Precia-Molen also supplied a BT lorry loading weigher, which isbelieved to be the first of its type installed in the UK, with full Board ofTrade approval; so avoiding the need to install a very long weighbridgeand still maintain full driver operated control.

Precia-Molen provided a complete turn-key package incorporating allseven driver consoles, traffic barriers and traffic light control as well asthe electronic arrivals message board. Additionally, Precia-Molenconfigured and installed all of the hardware and software for thesystem.

Operation:

All incoming drivers arrive at the cab height BI300 Driver Console, where via a dialogue display are asked to input a unique identificationnumber, whereupon the GeneSYS3 system validates that the vehicle isan authorised user of the site and dispenses an RFID card to thedriver.

This vehicle is then held in the lorry reception park and is updated viathe electronic message board display. Once a loading point is availablethe vehicle is invited to proceed to the entry barrier and console wherethe driver presents his badge, the barrier opens and he is directed tothe loading point.

Once the vehicle is positioned on the weighbridge, underthe loading point, the driver leaves the vehicle andproceeds to the self-loading driver console where thedriver is prompted to present the RFID card withGeneSYS3 confirming that the vehicle is at thedesignated loading point correctly positioned on theweighbridge.

After recording the tare weight of the vehicle, GeneSYS3interrogates the vehicle file to verify the actual tare weightcomparing it with the tare weight of the vehicle kept onthe file, ensuring there is no existing product in thevehicle. On the commencement of loading there is a real-time interaction between GeneSYS3 and the plant PLCcontrol. This interface ensures safety interlocks areobserved and provides clear instructions to the driver. The system also uses two-stage loading to ensurevehicles are not overloaded.

If the vehicle has been directed to the BT loading stationa similar process is initiated; once loading starts there isagain real-time interaction between GeneSYS3 and theplant PLC control that ensures safety interlocks areobserved. However at this station the driver is asked toslowly drive forward as his target weight increases, asdisplayed on by the remote display.

The driver console prompts the driver to re-present theRFID badge and once the gross vehicle weight isrecorded the driver proceeds to the exit driver consoleand presents the RFID card where it is retained and thedespatch documentation is produced. The traffic barriersthen open and the vehicle leaves the site.

As part of the installation Precia-Molen also supplied 4FX belt weighers, which help RockTron monitor theeffectiveness of the production process throughcommunication with the plant PLC via a ProfiBus DPnetwork.

The inclusion of the BT weighing infrastructure within thesystem has provided key benefits for RockTron as the BTloading station represents a substantial saving on civilscosts, eliminating the preparation of a weighbridgefoundation in excess of 24 metres in length.

The BT weighing infrastructure comprises a fully weighedconveyor and is connected to the chassis by twoarticulations placed along the feed centre line, supportedat the opposite end by one or two strain gauge cells.

These instruments are for trade use Class 1 and performthe same functions as a weighbridge or a hopper scaleand are ideal for installing in confined spaces as the totallength is only 4500 mm in length with a height of 400mm.

Precia-Molen's system operates 24 hours a day, assisting RockTron's long term goal of increasingcapacity by encouraging the movement of product atnight. The GeneSYS3 system can handle increasedproduction levels whilst maintaining low staffing levelsand the system will expand to match RockTron'srequirements as it looks to grow over the coming years.

John Bance, director of operations, comments: “ThePrecia-Molen loading and weighing system has proveditself in operation at our Fiddler's Ferry plant. Closecollaboration between Precia-Molen and RockTron hasenabled us to deploy a fully automated loading systemwhich meets the needs of our customers and haulierswhile providing the detailed load managementinformation we require to run our business efficiently.”

A Leicestershire-based demolitioncontractor has diversified into therecycled aggregates businessfollowing a large investment incrushing and screening equipmentfrom Sandvik Mining andConstruction. With its sights seton material quality over quantity,AR Aggregates (a newly-formeddivision of AR Demolition) has alsobecome the UK's first non-quarryoperator of a four-way splitSandvik QA450.

AR Aggregates, the specialist recyclingarm of respected demolitioncontractor AR Demolition, has takendelivery of a new Sandvik track-mounted mobile crusher and a pair ofSandvik track-mounted mobilescreens. The QJ340 crusher andQE340 and QA450 screens form thebackbone of a new aggregatesrecycling operation that marks asignificant diversification for ARDemolition and that breathes new lifeinto a previously run-down materialsrecycling operation lurking behind athriving scrap processing yard close toLeicester city centre.

Best Equipment for Best Results

AR Demolition has a well-earnedreputation for doing things that little bitdifferently; of taking things a little bitfurther; of punching above its weight.Despite being a relatively youngcompany, AR Demolition's trackrecord on personnel training, forexample, is second to none. Each ofits impressive and well-maintainedfleet of Volvo hydraulic excavators andwheel loaders bears the familiar pinkribbon emblem as a constant and

public reminder of the battle withbreast cancer fought by the wife ofco-director Richard Dolman. And thepurchase of the new Sandvik crushingand screening equipment in generaland the QA450 in particular, underlinesthe company's determination to bedifferent.

“We could have just bought a second-hand crusher and screen and beencontent with producing a 6F2 product, but there are plenty of othercompanies doing that. We wanted tobe unique in this area,” explains co-director Andrew Thompson. “We have, therefore, invested in the best possibleequipment to ensure that we canprovide our customers with the bestpossible materials.”

Well Equipped

The home of AR Aggregates is a 0.6-hectare area that sits above andbehind the AE Burgess scrap andwaste processing facility and whereAR Demolition has been a customerfor many years. “When the previousincumbent announced that he wasleaving, AE Burgess approached usand asked if we would be willing totake it on,” recalls Richard Dolman.“We had been considering a move intothe recycling field for some time butthe thought that we could workalongside an established contact likeAE Burgess just polarised things for usand we leapt at the opportunity.”

The company took up residence inDecember 2009 and, under thedirection of newly appointed managerDarren Thomspon (Andrew's brother)immediately set about rejuvenating thefacility. A 2,000 m2 area of the site

was concreted to help minimise wintermud and summer dust; a set of newPortakabins complete with a viewingplatform was installed along with anew on-site fuel tank; and a new VolvoL110 wheel loader with on-boardweighing and a Volvo 210B excavatorfrom the company's demolition fleetarrived on site and set about cleaningup the various stockpiles of material.

Competing with Quarries

While the site was being laid out toThompson and Dolman'sspecifications and in accordance withWRAP protocols, the two set aboutidentifying the most appropriatecrushing and screening equipment fortheir needs. “The QJ340 (formerly theExtec C-12+) largely chose itself. Thehydrostatic drive means that it canoperate in reverse, ideal forapplications like ours where asphaltmay be present. It is the industrystandard and we have hired themdozens of times over the years,”Dolman insists. “But we really had todo our homework on the screeningequipment as this would ultimatelydetermine the consistency and qualityof the recycled products we'd be ableto produce.”

Following extensive trials, demonstrations andfactory visits, and with the guidance of Sandvikrepresentative Adrian Fletcher, Dolman andThompson ultimately chose the SandvikQE340 and QA450. “The decision to workwith Sandvik was based partly on the expertiseand help given to us by Adrian Fletcher andalso on the fact that their factory and Europeanparts stock at Swadlincote is just 40 minutesup the road, extremely useful if we ever needspares in a hurry,” Thompson says. “Ourdecision to purchase the Sandvik QA450 wasdriven by our determination to compete withlocal quarries with a range of recycledproducts that are of as consistently high qualityas virgin aggregates.”

The Sandvik QE340 incorporates a large 4.7 x1.5 metre screen box for optimum productivityin a wide variety of materials. The QA450,meanwhile, has a pair of 3.05 x 1.52 metrescreen boxes that are individually driven andactuated to allow greater control over theoutput material.

Comprehensive Range

That range of products includes a 6F2 <75 mmgrade; a <40 mm Type 1 equivalent; a 75 to 40mm clean product that is ideal for applicationsincluding piling mats; 20 and 10 cleanfractions; and a 0 to 5 mm dust that is alreadyproving popular with local authorities seekingpipe bedding material. “Very few recyclingcompanies are able to offer this breadth ofproducts and I think we're unique in offering ahigh quality dust product,” explains Dolman.“We have already been visited by the localauthority, Highways Agency and theEnvironment Agency, all of whom have givenus their seal of approval and all of which arenow potential customers.”

In addition to these customers, AR Aggregatesis already drawing skip and demolition wastematerial from a 40 kilometre radius andproduction is gradually ramping up. However, the company has little interest in puretonnages, preferring to concentrate onsupplying a consistent, high quality material.“We probably have the capacity to produce1,000 tonnes per day of a 6F2 product butthere are plenty of other companies alreadydoing that,” Thompson asserts. “We wouldprefer to concentrate on creating a productthat is a genuine alternative to virginaggregates in a variety of applications.”

Dolman and Thompson readily admit that theformation of AR Aggregates represents thegroup's largest single investment and that ithas taken place during a time when the entireUK economy is in recession. But the pairremains optimistic about the prospects for theirfledgling operation. “We are based close toLeicester city centre so we can offer localdemolition companies an ideal alternative tonoisy and dusty on-site crushing andscreening. We are working closely with AEBurgess, a company with an excellentreputation. And we have built our entireoperation in accordance with WRAPprotocols,” Richard Dolman concludes. “Inaddition, we are using high quality Sandvikequipment to produce a high quality productfor high-end customers. We are setting a newlocal standard.”

Following the supply of a GipoCOMBI RC130FDRmobile crushing and screening plant to Lafarge -Ewenny Quarry in Bridgend, South Wales in late 2009,

Aggregate, Processing and Recycling Ltd of Tamworth theUK and Northern Ireland GIPO distributor has recently sold afurther machine to the Cuddy Group for immediate delivery. The machine which will be commissioned in August willproduce single size aggregates whilst being operated as aprimary & secondary crusher. The system will process hightonnages of “as-blasted” limestone into 0-5 and 5-25mmaggregates.

The GipoCOMBI RC130FDR which was exhibited at therecent Hillhead show is a heavy duty, highly efficientmachine of compact design which is driven by a CaterpillarC15 engine supplying 430kw in total, allowing 380kw + tobe applied to the crusher. Featuring a dual-zone blockagerelease system, the variable speed P130 impact crusherallows maximum variance on output grading; all gapadjustments are hydraulic and crusher inlet + top apronhave hydraulic lift for blockage reduction.

A variable speed feeder supplies material to a 2 deck pre-screen with scalping at 0-40mm and crusher bypass facility.Crusher discharge is catered for with the provision of a trayfeeder as standard to absorb impact and protect theconveyor. Final screening of material is performed by a 4.5 x2 metre - 2 deck screen incorporating a 25mm aperture topdeck and a 5mm aperture bottom deck.

To ensure optimum dust suppression the machine is fittedwith a system including an on-board water pump whichsupplies spray bars at the crusher inlet / outlet and also toall conveyor heads.

Additional features include aluminium covers on allconveyors, plus walkways and maintenance platformsaround all relevant parts of the machine for easymaintenance.

The GipoCOMBI RC130FDR has significant advantages overother machines as it utilises a system of combined crushingand screening in closed circuit, achieving maximumefficiency. With fuel consumption significantly lower incomparison to a separate crusher and screen, the machinealso has the advantage of a much quicker set-up andmovement times than when aligning two separate units.

Other major advantages include the reduction of loadingand stockpile clearing activity. Once material is fed into theGipoCOMBI it is contained within the machine until theprocess is complete, hence no extra work, or fuel usage onloading shovels handling oversize stone back to the hopper.

Maintenance is well catered for as the machine has only oneengine and not two, and features less conveyor belts overallthan the combination of a separate crusher and screen, resulting in less risk of downtime and lower service costs.

BJD Crushers on a rollat Buxton Lime BJD Crushers has recently supplied Tarmac BuxtonLime & Cement with two of their latest design ofDouble Roll Crushers. The crushers, installed atBuxton Lime & Cement's Hindlow and Tunstead sites, are employed in the production of high purityquicklime which is used in industrial applicationssuch as steelmaking and the manufacture of concretebuilding blocks.

Tarmac Buxton Lime & Cement is the largest producer oflime and high quality lime products in the UK andinstallation of the two BJD crushers is part of a majorinvestment by Tarmac which includes the recentcommissioning of a new Maerz lime kiln at Tunstead.

The BJD Double Roll Crushers are 75x75 hydraulic drivemodels, one fitted with toothed rolls and the other withsmooth rolls. The robust units are particularly suited to thereduction of friable materials such as limestone. Thecrushing action takes place at the nip-point between thetwo rolls, with the roll gap setting being fully adjustable for avariety of product sizes. At Buxton Lime & Cement, theunits operate round-the-clock producing 330 tonnes perday of lime from a feed of lump 40mm limestone.

Burned lime is elevated from the kiln to the crusher houseand then into a vertical in-feed arrangement, that spans thefull width of the rolls, ensuring even distribution of feed tothe high chrome rolls. An important feature of the BJDDouble Roll is its unique automatic protection device whichprotects the crusher against un-crushable material byautomatically opening rolls, allowing such material to pass -the rolls then automatically re-set to the original gap setting.

“The BJD Double Rolls are performing to expectations”,says Ian Andrews, Tarmac's Project Manager. “In fact, everyone at BJD Crushers has performed well throughoutthe whole process. From the outset, they were willing tocarry out a series of trials, which we at Tarmac witnessed, using a rolls test machine to determine a machinespecification that satisfied our precise productrequirements.”

Korroflex crusherbacking compoundideal for use in coldclimates

The use of effective crusher backing compoundsand release agents is critical to enhancing the lifeof crushing equipment used in the quarrying andmining industry. Impact and shock vibrations cancause significant damage when in service unlessthe right compound is used. One company has animpressive track record in this area and itsproducts are recommended by many of the majorcrusher manufacturers.

In some parts of Europe changes in climate have seenwinter temperatures plummeting to all time lows andprotecting equipment has become more challengingfor maintenance personnel. In response to this, ITWKorroflex developed a crusher backing compound thatis enabling quarries to continue crushing problem-free.Many users in areas of Northern Europe and Russiahave experienced benefits from using Korrobond 90because it cures and performs well at very lowambient temperatures.

The product is a polyurethane-based crusher backingproduct and when cured produces a tough flexiblebacking. It requires no pre-heating and pours attemperatures as low as 32 deg F (0 deg C). It is asolvent-free product, gives good compressive andflexural strength, minimal shrinkage and will providethe same impact strength as white metal. It can beapplied by personnel with the minimum of training andis designed to be used in both cone and gyratorycrushers.

Due to the natural high moisture content rape seed is arelatively hard to screen material. Being aware of this, extensive tests were performed at RHEWUMs testingfacilities before defining a machine type and size.Furthermore the machine is lined with a food compliantwear protection to protect the parts of the machineagainst the very strong rape seed.

After a construction manufacturing time of only 2 months thedelivery of the machine was foreseen for the beginning ofJuly 2010, with plans for the start up during the course ofJuly.

About Rape Seed

Rape seed is a very important economical agricultural crop, belonging to the family of Brassicaceae to which alsomustard plants and cabbage belong to. The rape, respectively rape seed, is mainly used for the production ofcooking oil and fuel as well as the so called rape cake as aby-product. The rape cake is mainly used as rich andalbuminous animal feed.

About Broekelmann

Ölmühle Brökelmann is situated in Hamm/Germany and producing several kinds of cooking oil for private and industrialcustomers within Germany, as well as the well known brand Brölio.

Approximately 1.000 t/day of various seed oils are processed in the plant. First the seed is cleaned, then milled and pressedin screw extruders. Two thirds of the oils are produced this way whilst one third is made by extraction. By this combinationof milling and extraction as by-product, albuminous pellets are produced which are used for high quality animal feed, suchas cattle, pig and chicken breeding.

Precision Screen proudly introduces, the PrecisionScreen Track Crush VSI. Precision Screen is the firstcompany in the world to build a Tracked Vertical ShaftImpactor that can comfortably handle in excess of300tph. Built and designed in Australia by PrecisionScreen R&D team, headed up by Managing DirectorHarold Kerr, this machine has been a major success inthe aggregate making process throughout Australia. The Precision Screen Track Crush VSI is working insome of the harshest conditions to produce the bestshaped stone around.

Precision Screen is an innovative manufacturing companywith extensive experience in the industry (22 years) and is asupplier of world leading crushing and screening equipment.

Precision Screen finds their innovations from clients withinthe industry by speaking to them on a one to one level touncover common issues they are faced with.

One area of need has been the production of material whichmeets the exacting specifications of its customers (i.e.shape of stone). Stage 4 crushing, in aggregatemanufacturing is becoming more and more important, andis the key to a top quality product. With such a large volumeof mobile crushers and screens in the market place; it onlyseemed like a matter of time before the market demanded aVSI on tracks to better shape their material. This is how thePrecision Screen Track Crush VSI crusher came about.

Precision Screen embraced this challenge some 9 years agoin 2001, producing the first ever tracked VSI crusher usingthe Barmac (8100) crushing chamber. Back then thedemand for this type of machine was still quite low; howeverHarold Kerr and his team saw the potential for a highproduction rock shaping aggregate crusher. This first unithad some very unique features, making it stand out waybefore its time. This machine proudly boasted:

The self levelling feature has proven to be an invaluable partof the machine as you can position the machine dead levelanywhere on the quarry floor ensuring a balanced crusher atall times. HAZEMAG & EPR GmbH has recently installed acomplete primary crushing plant for the Di MasoCompany, at their Palo del Colle Plant in Bari, Italy.Designed to process 300 tonnes per hour oflimestone at a feed size of 0-800mm, the newcrushing concept incorporates a rugged state-of-the-art primary impact crusher, together with awobbler feeder. The HAZEMAG AP-PH 1414 impact crusher isequipped with the very latest active hydraulic controlsystem, which locks the impact aprons in positionduring operation, to guarantee a uniform, high-qualityproduct. However, on entry of any tramp metal, theaprons retract immediately, allowing uncrushablematerial to pass through. The aprons then return to theirpre-set position. In addition, the impactor's inlet platecan be moved hydraulically to facilitate the release ofany jammed material.

As well as an excellent standard of operational safety, the AP-PH 1414 is extremely user-friendly and machinemaintenance is simplified; readily accessible blow bars, with a wedge retaining system, can be removed quicklyand easily, and around 90% of wear lining plates usedin the housing are identical and interchangeable.

Upstream of the Impactor is the HAZEMAG WobblerFeeder which removes fines from the feed material. Thisprocess relieves the load on the crusher, leading toreduced power consumption, a lower wear rate andsuperior operational safety. The wobbler feeder'sefficiency is not affected by moist or sticky material and,due to the horizontal flow system, the height of theinstallation is minimised. In this particular application, the material is screened off at 50mm, providingconsistent, smooth and controlled feeding.

Get the best from your assets

Most operator's mechanical equipment on siteshas been procured from a variety ofmanufacturers over years of operations. Theoperating instructions and site knowledge mayhave been lost over the years but simplemaintenance and overhaul techniques can beused to maximize the life of the asset andminimize the total costs. As company whomanufacture replacement screens, refurbishexisting machines and maintain screens Ithought I would write down some of thecommon issues we see within the industry andsome simple solutions.1. Roller/Ball Bearings all need regular

lubrication. Bearings on screens are operatingin one of the harshest environments and thekey to the screen operating efficiently andeffectively is ensuring the bearings receiveenough lubrication with the motto being “littleand often” with a little being 2 - 6 shots perday per bearing dependent on size. Vibratingscreen bearings generally need lubricatingwith a Lithium based grease whereas otherplant bearings normal EP grease is fine. Asplant managers it is worth checking that freshgrease is visible on grease nipples duringwalk-arounds. Oil lubricated screens need tohave the oil regularly checked forcontaminants by taking a sample and gettingit analysed by your lubricate supplier todetermine the life of the lubricant and thestate of the bearing. More automatedsolutions for both grease and oil lubricatedscreens are available which can dramaticallyreduce the maintenance time plus give thesite manager piece of mind that the bearingswill only fail when they reach the end of theiruseful life but there is an initial capital cost (forthe unit, for installation and potentiallyintegration with control system) and alsopower cost.

2. If you have indications that the bearing isabout to fail such as increased heat, noise oramps required, managers should schedulethe bearing change as soon as possible asthe potential damage caused by a total failurecan increase the repair bill by a factor of 3.Changing Bearings in screens can be difficultif you have not done it before or don'tundertake it regularly. Ideally bearings shouldbe pressed out of the housings using ahydraulic press which will minimize thechance of damaging the housings and theshaft. Before installing new bearings theexisting area should be cleaned to removeany debris and degreased. The bearingshould be pressed in to the housings beingcareful to ensure that the alignment of thebearing is correct as misaligned bearings willfail quickly plus damage housings and shaft.

When reassembling the remaining components of the shaftassembly it is key that the correct torque settings are used and thatthe maintenance engineer checks that the shaft assembly is able torotate prior to testing under load.

3. Changing from woven wire to modular polyurethane screen mediais often done when a second hand machine is utilized on a quarryto replace an existing machine. It is key when you do this to havethe deck frames modified or replaced as the deck frameconstruction is generally different for both screen media's.Unfortunately we have seen machines with cracked side plates andbroken deck frames within weeks when the screen has beenmodified to go from woven wire to polyurethane

4. Support Structures - Vibrating screens should vibrate the loadgoing over the screen decks not the entire screen house or screenstructure. Causes of high vibration in structures can be as simple asthe springs have reached the end of their useful life and needreplacing. Other simple causes can be bolts coming loose in thesupport structure or parts of the support structure being removedfollowing overhaul and not being replaced. The high residualvibration can cause damage to the screen itself and/or causedamage to the support work. During regular walk-arounds attentionshould be paid to vibration in the flooring or hand railing to see ifthere has been a change

Candiac, Quebec, Canada - Flex-Mat® 3 High-Performance, Self-Cleaning Screen Media from Montreal-based Major Wire IndustriesLimited helps operations increase screen capacity and materialthroughput while reducing downtime. Available for modular ortensioned screen decks, Flex-Mat 3 panels have more open area, providing up to 30 percent more screen capacity than woven wireand up to 50 percent more screen capacity than polyurethane andrubber panels. It employs independently vibrating wires that increaseproduct throughput by up to 40 percent over traditional woven wireor polyurethane panels by increasing open area and eliminating anyblinding, pegging and clogging. To date, Flex-Mat 3 is operating inmore than 20,000 applications worldwide.

Some aggregate producers are switching to larger screen boxes to gainadded capacity. For example, woven wire users have switched from 5’ x 16’to 6’ x 20’ screen boxes, while some modular panel users have expandedfrom 8’ x 20’ to 8’ x 24’ or even 8’ x 26’ screen boxes. Typically, producerscan gain the same or more capacity by trying Flex-Mat 3 first and save up to$50,000 or more in costs associated with purchasing larger screen boxes.

For tensioned screen decks, Flex-Mat 3's signature lime green polyurethanestrips align to the screen box's crown bars and hold individual wires in placeas they run from hook to hook. Wear life exceeds that of woven wire up tothree times because there are no cross wires with high wear spots like thereare with woven wire. On modular screen decks, Flex-Mat 3's modular panelsinstall easily, similar to traditional polyurethane and rubber panels. On bothscreen types, Flex-Mat 3's wires vibrate independently to better separatematerial, virtually eliminating blinding, pegging or clogging. This minimizesdowntime spent cleaning or replacing screen cloth, increasing productiontime. Flex-Mat 3 is the ideal screening solution in many applications, including aggregate, mining, sand & gravel, aglime, C&D recycle, coal, slag, talc, asphalt, top soil, salt, mulch, industrial minerals and green waste.

Flex-Mat 3 provides benefits on every screen box deck: eliminating near-sizepegging on top decks, producing cleaner retained product through themiddle decks and preventing fine material blinding on bottom decks. Onmodular screen decks, Flex-Mat 3 modular polyurethane panels can replaceexisting screen media on each deck wherever throughput is compromised orcan replace the entire deck for maximum production.

Flex-Mat 3 tensioned is available in the industry's broadest range of openingsizes-30 mesh to 4 inches-and with the widest range of application-specificwire diameters, enabling Major Wire to fine tune each screen's production toits greatest potential. Wire configurations include a diamond-shaped Flex-Mat “D” for most standard applications; wave-patterned Flex-Mat “S” forremoval of fines; triangular Flex-Mat “T” for heavy scalping or fine screening;and Flex-Mat “Double-Wire” for high-impact applications.

Celebrating more than 125 years in business, Major Wire Industries Limiteddesigns, manufactures and markets screening solutions, including Flex-Mat®3 High-Performance, Self-Cleaning Screen Media in tensioned and modularversions; OptimumWireÆ woven tempered and stainless steel wire cloth;
