Summary

• Constructive dialogues between delegates from ETSI TC M2M and TIA TR-50 on the M2M Architecture.

• The Architectures may look differently in presentation but there were no functional differences other than scenarios for different connection (e.g. GW-GW) were not clearly addressed.

• One of the action item from June 7th meeting for Huawei is to facilitate the map the reference points.

• Two areas were identified that may contributed to the difference: No clear indication of M2M Service Capability Platform in the TR-50

architecture. The mId interface in TC M2M architecture may need to be further

refined to accommodate Device and Gateway deployment scenarios.

• TR-50 should also examine if the “M2M Service Capability Platform” should be included in the Reference Architecture.

Definitions from ETSI TS 102 690

The M2M Device Domain is composed of the following elements:•M2M Device: A device that runs M2M Application(s) using M2M Service Capabilities and network domain functions. < …deletion…>

M2M Devices can connect to M2M Core in the following manners:

Case 1 “Direct Connectivity”: < …deletion…> The M2M Device performs the procedures such as registration, authentication, authorization, management and provisioning with the Network and Application Domain. < …deletion…>

M2M Gateway to Gateway allowed

Case 2 “Gateway as a Network Proxy”: The M2M Device connects to the Network and Application Domain via an M2M Gateway. < …deletion…> The M2M Gateway connects to the Network and Application Domain via an Access Network. The M2M Gateway acts as a proxy for the M2M Network and Application Domain towards the M2M Devices that are connected to it. Such an M2M Gateway performs procedures such as authentication, authorization, registration, management, and provisioning on behalf of the M2M Devices connected to it.

The M2M Gateway may execute applications; such applications may be executed on behalf of the M2M Network and Application Domain. The M2M Gateway decides on routing service layer requests originating from Service Capabilities or applications. The M2M Devices that connect to such a Gateway may or may not be addressable by the M2M Network and Application Domain. M2M Devices may be connected to the Network Domain via multiple (sequential or parallel) M2M Gateways.

Gateway can have local intelligence

M2M Gateway: Equipment using M2M Service Capabilities to ensure M2M Devices interworking and interconnection to the Network and Application Domain. The M2M Gateway may also run M2M applications.

As an example an M2M Gateway may implement local intelligence in order to activate automation processes resulting from the collection and treatment of various information sources (e.g. from sensors and contextual parameters).

To Help Move Things Forward

• It seems that all A and B Reference Points are all somewhat mapped into mId Reference Point. mId Reference Point: allows an M2M Device or M2M Gateway to communicate with the

M2M Service Capabilities in the Network and Applications Domain. mId uses core network connectivity functions as an underlying layer.

• Examine the mId Reference Point to ensure the scenarios (e.g. GW-GW, Device-Device) can be supported through mId.

• TR-50 should also examine if the “M2M Service Capability Platform” should be included. The function of Service Capability Platform seems to be implicitly

included in “Application”. mIa Reference Point: allows an application to access the M2M Service Capabilities in the

Networks and Applications Domain. dIa Reference Point: allows an application residing in an M2M Device to access the

different M2M Service Capabilities in the same M2M Device or in an M2M Gateway allows an application residing in an M2M Gateway to access the different M2M Service Capabilities in the same M2M Gateway.
