    Huakailani Adopt-a-Block 2010

    Monday, July 05, 2010

Calling all Huakailani Environmental Heroes! We are kicking off Year 2 of our participation in the Adopt-a-Block program on July 18.Sunday.Huakailani School completed their first year with the Adopt-A-Block Program in 2009-2010. They received the Good Neighbor Award from in May 2010 from the city andcounty of Honolulu for their volunteer efforts and for making a positive impact on theircommunity. This program integrates with Mayor Mufi Hanneman's concept of the 21st centuryAhupua'a, but also requirements under the City's storm Water Management Program tofurther reduce the amounts of pollutants entering the storm drain systems. The work that Huakailani Volunteers do with this program helps to improve the quality ofwater running into the Hamakua Stream and the storm water drains of Kailua. The students and families of Huakailani School have made a commitment to help keepKailua Town clean one street at a time and improve the quality and conditions of thecommunity by keeping pollutants off of the City roads and connected waterbodies. Thestreets that Huakailani has adopted are especially important because of the proximity tothe streams and ocean.

Mahalo to the Zaffran/Monahan Family who joined Mr. and

Mrs. B on the Clean-Up Crew!

Kailua Beach Clean-Up for the International Coastal Clean-

    Up Redux

The Clean-Up on Sept. 25th was an excellent success! Throughout the morning, 27

volunteers, plus a handful of cute keiki, put on gloves and went off with their buckets,

bags, and screens. We collected litter from the beach parks and plastic pollution from the

coastline between Kailua Beach Park and Kalama Beach Park.

Details compiled from our volunteers' trash tally sheets are below. We collected90POUNDS in 2 hours! All the data from this international event will be posted on theOcean Conservancy website in the following months.8 Paper bags 69 Cups, plates or cutlery 36 Plastic bags 165 Food wrappers 27 Balloons

    33 Pull tabs 15 Plastic beverage bottles 1 6-pack holder 12 Glass bottles 68 Straws 22

Beverage cans 14 Toys 161 Caps or lids 22 Items of clothing, shoes 15 Pieces of

Styrofoam 1000 Bits of micro-debris 200 Fishing line, net, or rope segments 5 Oil or

bleach containers 40 Floats and lures 13 Pieces of plastic sheeting 1700 Cigarette butts

    2 Batteries 4 Cigarette lighters 2 Diapers 9 Cigar tips 1 Syringe, 18 band-aids 38

    Tobacco wrappers 6 toothbrushes

Volunteers noted the massive amount of litter within the parks. We will be working to

create more places to dispose of cigarette butts as well as to add recycling bins. There is

always more to be cleaned up in these high traffic areas, so we encourage you to pick up

a bag of trash every time you visit!

The event was followed by a low-impact potluck. Except for a few toothpicks and a paperplate, we generated no waste!

We extend a giant thank you and mahalo to all the participants who came out to supportthe efforts, those who donated buckets and supplies, and those who made some goodies

to share. The Hawaii ZTA Alumnae Chapter made this their September event and drew

ladies from around the island to help. Additionally, Huakailani School supplied us with the

    coolers for the day.

Tentatively, our next Clean-Up is scheduled for December. We are accepting ideas if you

know of a Windward beach location or stream that is need of a clean-up crew.

The next Adopt a Block Clean-Up is on Sunday, October 17 from 9 -11. We will be

picking up litter, counting cigarette butts (in hopes of finding less because we gave out 5

cigarette butt planters right after the last clean up in July), cleaning the street gutters on

Hekili Street (stretch from Bowling Alley Driveway to Food Land Driveway), launching the

use of our Eco-Composter (green ball near our garden) and doing more storm drain

Next Clean Up: January 23, Sunday

    Sunday, January 09, 2011

Our next Adopt-A-Block date is soon approaching (January 23rd), and I wanted to take

this opportunity to explain to our new families and others that haven't participated a little

bit about the program. The Adopt-A-Block program at our school was initiated back in

September of 2009. It involves the cleanup of Hekili St. and includes the area across the

marsh on Hamakua St. and back around to Hekili St. This area used to be littered withrotting plants, cigarette butts and rubbish. Through the school's efforts, the problem is not

as significant and property owners have actually taken an interest in this upkeep. The

school has also stenciled storm drains in the area during these cleanups to send a clear

message to the public to try to keep trash and debris out of the storm drain system. The

cleanup usually takes place every 2-3 months, lasts for a couple of hours on a Saturday

or Sunday morning, and makes a huge difference in our community!

There are a few reminders for those who chose to participate.

    1. Everyone must wear covered shoes. 2. Gloves will be provided and must be worn by

all participants. 3. Don't forget your sunscreen! :)) 4. Everyone must sign a release form

which will be provided at the cleanup. 5. We encourage you bring a water bottle to keep

hydrated. We hope to have a big turn out. Mark your calendars!!!

January 23rd (9am-11)Mahalo for your participation!

    ADOPT A BLOCK JANUARY 23

    Sunday, January 30, 2011

Animoto Video from the most recent video has been posted. We had 30 volunteers come

out to help. The Cigarette Butt count was a little over 1200 and we collected about 4 bags

of compost and 2 bags of trash. This is a reduction in the amount of litter found in all

    categories.

The long term effects of Huakailani taking care of Hekili Street are becoming evident.Way to go!

The girls and families identified several new areas that could use cigarette butt planters.

We will begin work on the decorating and setting up the new butt planters in February.

    Stay tuned!

Our school will be taking part in a very

    opportunity during National Green Week

2011. The goal of this program is for

students to learn firsthand how they can make a difference in saving our planets valuable

resources, no matter how small. Our school will be joining thousands of others from

across the nation to achieve the following sustainability objectives during National Green

    Week 2011:

February - Help Eliminate half-million lbs. in trash with the waste free snack challenge

    March - Green Energy Challenge

    Waste-Free Snacks Overview

Prior to the Week of February 14, the students weighed all snack trash collected to

determine the amount of trash accumulated from snack leftovers for 5 days. During our

Green Week we are strongly encouraging the students to use reusable snack and drink

containers to carry snacks and drinks to school. Students will weigh daily snack trash.

Note: fruit waste such as apple cores and banana peels will not be counted towards the

snack weight totals. They will go in the compost.

Our schools' totals will be sent in to be added to the nationwide numbers. Nationwide

totals will be posted on the National Green Week website.

Parent Tip: Please shop ahead to purchase minimal-waste snacks and drinks and/or buy

bulk or fresh items and pack in reusable containers.

a grant to begin Bokashi composting at our school to be a food-waste free school. Three

of our students learned how to make Bokashi at the Service Learning conference they

    attended last spring.

The girls invited to a finalist interview on September 25. Wish them luck!

Making an Impact on Our Environment

    Monday, December 05, 2011

The cigarette butt planter at this spot on

Hekili Street got cracked and had to bethrown away. We dumped out the sand

from the planter in the grass.

Look what the spot looks like!

How does this have an impact on our

environment? Think deeply! What do you

    think?

Tuesday, December 13, 2011The Compost bars are set and the Bokashi is ready! We collected and weighed all of the food waste for 2 weeks to determine the average

amount of food waster our school produces each week.

We produce approximately 1.3 pounds of food waste each day at Huakailani. In 1 week

    that is over 5 pounds.
